The Stony Brook University School of Journalism has selected two outstanding high school journalists from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., to join its 2018 Robert W. Greene Institute for High School Journalists. Taylor Yon, 16, and Zoe Gordon, 15, rising juniors at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, will join 24 other student journalists this July at Stony Brook University where they will spend a week working in the School of Journalism’s multimedia newsroom, producing content across several media platforms. The annual journalism boot camp, which celebrates its 10th year this summer, honors the late Robert W. Greene, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and editor at Newsday. The Press Club of Long Island is sponsoring Yon’s and Gordon’s participation. Press Club President Scott Brinton said he is sure Yon and Gordon’s presence will inform any discussion or
reporting on gun violence in America. “I personally covered the wave of student protests on Long Island after the mass shooting in Parkland and saw firsthand the profound effect that the student activists from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School had on their peers here,” Brinton said. “I’m sure Zoe and Taylor will have an equally profound impact on the student journalists at the Greene Institute.” Yon and Gordon were staff writers for the high school newspaper, the Eagle Eye, during the 2017-2018 school year. On February 14th, 2018, their lives and roles as student journalists were transformed when 17 students and staff members were killed in a mass shooting at the school. Despite the tragic events, the Eagle Eye staff persevered and continued their mission, reporting on the event and its aftermath. Gordon, who will be an editor at the Eagle Eye next year, said it was a “truly odd” experience to be a grieving student and a student journalist. “We knew that we were trained to tell stories so we felt like we had to - it was an instinct,” Gordon said. “None of us took any breaks, and we right away started to write our memorial issue and scratch our almost-finished thirdquarter issue. our lives, it is that there are only so many aspects within our control; and even those few are questionable, at best. We can go through each day with a clear picture as to what we would like our life to be, but the reality is that this is the only true reality we know. The rest is mere wistfulness. This is why it is so important to appreciate each and every moment, those people we are fortunate to have in our lives, and to be grateful for the small miracles which surround us always. It’s difficult, to be sure, when you feel overwhelmed by life and whatever obstacles it might throw your way; but it takes such a minimal effort to stop
for a moment and appreciate a sunrise, a sunset, a butterfly, a blossom … anything, really. My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the flesh, ever present. I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours. I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.
Did you feel empty without all the chaos and manic energy surrounding you, pushing you forward from one selfimposed task to the next? Or was it somewhat fulfilling, perhaps allowing you a muchneeded breath of fresh air? Sometimes, in literally taking that breath, we can recapture a large piece of ourselves that we tend to lose to the daily grind. It grounds us, reminding us of the important things in life. And what is more important than finding happiness in the mundane, in making the most of our time, in savoring the memories before they have had a chance to fade ... Nothing, so far as I can tell. There is no fault in having aspirations and dreams; just remember that these days we are living presently are the stuff that dreams are made of as well.

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! On Sunday, August 12th, they are hosting their 2nd Underwater Beach Cleanup. This will be held at Centennial Beach in Port Jefferson starting at 9 a.m. If you love our oceans and want to help keep our coastlines clean, bring your friends and family to help clean up the beach. Also, if you are a certified scuba diver, you can bring your equipment and join those who will go below the surface and clean the beach. On Saturday, June 7th, Legislator Sarah Anker was honored to join the Bocchimuzzo family, elected officials, friends and colleagues at the renaming of the 9-1-1 Call Center in Yaphank, in honor of Anthony “Tony” Bocchimuzzo. Bocchimuzzo, who passed away in July of 2017 at the age of 49, one week before his 50th birthday, was an invaluable member of both the Longwood community, the Coram Fire Department and the Suffolk County Police Department. He had been a Suffolk Police Civilian Supervisor of the 911 dispatchers for 26 years, where he conducted trainings for new employees and acted as a communications liaison between the state and federal governments. While working for the

In addition, Tony was an outstanding county employee, who provided exceptional focus on county law enforcement and safety projects,” said Legislator Anker. “It was clear that Tony Bocchimuzzo was passionate about his work and cared deeply about making the world a better place for those around him,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “Now, each time someone enters our 911 call center, they will be reminded of Anthony and the indelible mark he made on our Police Department." Last year, Legislator Anker hosted a summer concert in partnership with the Coram Civic Association and the Coram Fire Department in his honor. This year, the Coram Concert will be held on August 13 at 7 pm at the Coram Fire Department Substation located at Pine Road and Route 112, and will feature Southbound, Long Island’s classic rock and country band. In addition, a 5k race will be held by the Police Department
in dedication to Tony and the Bocchimuzzo family. All money raised will go towards the Longwood Tony Bocchimuzzo Scholarship Fund.

Achieving Her Dream
Ceci Stevens, from Cutchogue, achieved her dream of getting a degree in Auto Diesel Technology. She loved the training and schoolwork so much she studied her way right up to be Valedictorian. Ceci recently paid a visit to her teacher who encouraged her to achieve her dream. Her journey began at Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES). Enrolled in the Auto Technology Program at the Academy at H.B. Ward Technical Center in Riverhead during high school, Ceci spent two years in
the program learning, competing, and honing her skills. She participated in the Greater New York Automobile Dealership Association Competition, SkillsUSA, received a Vanguard Student Recognition Award, and a full scholarship to Ohio Technical College; graduating as Valedictorian. Ceci is the first female student at Ohio Technical College to receive a corporate sponsor to be trained in the Power Generations Program. She is gainfully employed as a field technician with EEC, with offices in Manhattan and
Massachusetts. “I’ve always had a passion for automobiles,” she said. “With the guidance and encouragement from my teacher, Mr. O’Hara, in the Auto Technology Program at ESBOCES, I achieved my dream.” Ceci said she would always attribute her success to ESBOCES. “I credit my accomplishments to all that I learned at ESBOCES. I tell everyone I’m glad I had the chance to attend the career programs when I was in high school because I don’t know where I would be or what I would be doing without those opportunities.”

School of Distinction To culminate a successful year of athletic accomplishments, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School was officially named a 2018 School of Distinction by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association on July 12th. The high school joins nine other schools in NYSPHAA’s Section XI and only 30 across the state to be recognized with the honor. The School of Distinction
awards were established to help unite varsity coaches in challenging their teams to achieve a statewide honor. To earn the distinction, a school must have 100 percent of its varsity teams qualify for and receive the ScholarAthlete team award during their respective sports seasons. All of Port Jefferson School District’s 22 varsity teams for the 2017-2018 school year were awarded Scholar-
Athlete recognition, in which the average GPA for 75 percent of the roster was greater than or equal to 90. The district congratulates the studentathletes, coaches and administration for a continued focus on excellence in the classroom as well as the individual accomplishments and teamwork in their respective sports.
Farm to Table
The Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Youth Corps, a volunteer group of youngsters 11 to 17 years old, literally created their own farm to table event recently to feed the homeless and families in need. All of their hard work took place at HeartBeet Farms which is located on the property of Bethel Hobbs Community Farm in Centereach. They actually incorporated the same method of farming used by Dr. Samuel Thompson, who lived at WMHO’s historic Thompson House during the 18th century, mixing clam shells into the soil for added calcium – an essential element for plant health. After harvesting beet greens and kale, they
prepared Orecchiette with Greens, Mozzarella and Crispy Chickpeas, as well and a Beet Salad with Mustard Vinaigrette. They delivered the meals to the Saint James Church for their Wednesday food pantry event. Hobbs Farm, a nonprofit, all-volunteer farm, was founded by Ann Pellegrino in 2007, with a mission to provide fresh produce to those in need through a network of local food pantries and programs. In 2017, Ann and Jen Ross formed HeartBeet Farms, a oneacre, for-profit farm on the property to continue to sustain the Hobbs Farm mission. Their onsite Education Garden offers school groups, scouts,
families and individuals a chance to participate as well. More of the Youth Corps’ harvest will be served at “Create an Organic Garden” on July 25 at WMHO’s Cultural Center in Stony Brook Village. Hosted by HeartBeet Farms, who will offer a variety of tips and tricks, the event will take place from 1 pm to 2:30 pm and is next in the “55 + Club” ongoing series. Jewels and Jeans More than 300 guests recently attended the Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s festive “Jewels & Jeans” benefit dinner at Flowerfield in St. James, honoring three individuals with impressive achievements and service. Proceeds benefit WMHO educational programs, Youth Corps and historic properties. This year’s honorees were: Bud Simmons, President of Budco Enterprises Inc. and founding director of the Master Riggers Association. In 2001, Bud installed over 2 million pounds of steel in less than 3 months to have the 1 and 9 subway lines open for the first anniversary of 9-11. Bud is involved in a multitude of organizations including numerous 9-11 memorials, the U.S.
Chamber of Commerce and has been an ongoing supporter of WMHO’s Jewels & Jeans dinner and other programs for the organization. Anne Shybunko-Moore is CEO and Owner of GSE Dynamics Inc., U.S. Defense Manufacturer specializing in providing complex structural assemblies to the Air Force, Navy, Army and Major Aerospace Primes. Anne served as an appointed member of The National Women’s Business Council, a non-partisan federal advisory council created to serve as an independent source of advice and counsel to the President, Congress, and U.S. Small Business Administration on economic issues of importance to women business owners. She is
a long-time supporter of various WMHO programs and events. Robert Allen has been President and CEO of Teachers Federal Credit Union since 1988 and has a total of 47 years working in credit unions. Founded in 1952, TFCU is a full service financial cooperative and has grown to over $5.8 billion in total assets with 26 branch locations and over 700 employees. He has served with many organizations including Chairman, School of Business Advisory Board-SUNY Old Westbury and Member of Congressman Bishop’s Education Advisory Board. TFCU has provided support to WMHO’s onsite and distance learning education programs.

Writer Selected
Based on her extraordinary talents, Ward Melville High School junior Maya Peña-Lobel was selected to participate in the New England Young Writers’ Conference, a selective program for aspiring writers held at the Bread Loaf campus of Middlebury College in the Green Mountains of Vermont from this past spring. The New England Young
Writers’ Conference is an annual, four-day writingfocused workshop for high school students from around the country. The days are filled with writing seminars, workshops, readings and opportunities to meet other young writers. During the conference, Maya was part of a small workshop group where she was instructed by a published author and

worked on her fiction piece, along with her peers. She also attended poetry craft classes and went to daily readings and performances, as well as many other fun activities. To attend, a student must first be nominated by a teacher and their school: Maya was nominated by Dr. Kelso (her teacher from a 10th-grade elective course in Writing Fiction & Poetry) and by Dr. Alan Baum, WMHS principal. Second, the student must submit a writing sample. Maya submitted her poem “The Human Experience” and a short story written in the style of magical realism. Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers.
The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy, strengthen communities,
develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide
AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer questions and prepare tax returns. In addition
to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers receive training
