The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Their President Stella Hendrickson relates calling their organization for help to calling a neighbor. She mentioned, “Calling Rebuilding Together Long Island for help is like calling that person in your neighborhood that we all wish we had. You know the one...the one who is always working around his house and yard and seems to know how to take care of all the many little things that need to be taken care before they turn into major issues. That’s who the volunteers of RTLI are. They are your neighbors, retired from all walks of life and looking to help others and the communities of Long Island be safer and better. Some were teachers and principals, some engineers, some were IT professionals. They are a mixture of professions, but they all have one common goal, which is to help those in need.” Does your home have working smoke alarms, or have you removed the batteries because they were old and “chirping”? Not to worry, RTLI has batteries with a 10-year life span. Do you need grab bars to help eliminate nasty falls and a dreaded costly hospitalization? No problem, they’ll take care of it. Do you need a wheelchair ramp so that you can leave your home safely? RTLI can
construct a wooden ramp usually within a day or two of the start of the project. Are you freezing in the winter because of cold drafts from the windows? They’ll weatherize your windows and doors to keep you warm. If you have trip hazards like missing floor tiles or a high saddle between doorways, that’s an easy fix for the RTLI volunteers. These are just a few of things that RTLI does every day for eligible homeowners across our beautiful island! If you are in need and want to know if you quality for assistance, please call them at 631.777.7894. You may be wondering how this organization does all of this for free. Some of their program funds come through grants and corporations, but some also come from everyday people like you and me. RTLI does not receive government funding. They do so much for the community and because they are an organization of volunteers, they can do a lot with a little and make every dollar count. Additionally, they are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills because training is available. (All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.) They are also looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. If you’re an employer you can call them and see how you can sponsor a project and have your staff participate in a day of service. PORT JEFFERSON, NY – Oncologist, Nakul Singhal, MD has joined New York Cancer & Blood Specialists and will be accepting new patients at our Bayside and New Hyde Park locations. Eleven students from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School and Port Jefferson Middle School recently participated and placed as high scorers in the annual Suffolk County Math Teachers’ Association competition. According to math teacher and math team adviser Dennis Christofor, the students excelled in their sections of competition, which is based on the state
mathematics curriculum of each grade or course level. High school students Nicholas DeDonato, David Lawler, William Wu, Reid Biondo and Kyle Onghai were the school’s winners in geometry, algebra II, pre-calculus, calculus and advanced calculus, respectively. William Wu also placed fourth in Suffolk County in pre-calculus. Eighth grader Michael Melikyan was the middle
school winner in the Level 1 category and Carman Stanton was the school winner in the seventh grade section. Sixth grade students Isabelle Chen was the middle school winner and tied for second place in all of Suffolk County. Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Gabriela Sanchez recently won a first-place contest in her cosmetology class at BOCES. The contest is just one of the special achievements of Gabriela, who arrived in Port Jefferson from El Salvador to begin her high school career in ninth grade. According to ENL teacher Jennifer Walling, when Gabriela started high school, she was very quiet,

Determination And Grit With proud parents, siblings, friends, teachers, administrators and members of the Port Jefferson Board of Education in attendance, the 97 members of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Class of 2019 received their diplomas during the annual commencement exercises on June 28. The sounds of “Pomp and Circumstance,” performed by student-musicians under the baton of District Director of Music and Fine Arts Dr. Michael Caravello, filled the air as the proud students walked onto the high school lawn to be commended one final time for their successful high school careers. Words of wisdom and congratulatory remarks on the accomplishments of the students were offered
by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Casciano and Principal Christine Austen. She spoke of the small acts of kindness that she noticed in her daily routine at the school, from students who assisted with prom tickets, to those who guided younger peers with personal issues, to helping a peer’s family member who had an illness. “Your compassion and support for one another and the underclassmen is admirable, and I want to thank each one of you for making the high school a better place,” she said. She commended them for their grit, courage and determination and encouraged them to remember to believe in themselves, and not to forget to ask for help. This year’s parentspeaker, Tara Higgins,
continued to set a tone of pride for all the graduates. Valedictorian Annalisa Welinder and salutatorian Ava Schully also addressed their fellow classmates with gratitude for family and fond memories of growing up in the close-knit school community. Their many high school achievements will lead them to post-high school studies at Stanford University and Brown University, respectively. Austen then called each student to the podium and highlighted their high school careers and future plans. She was assisted by members of the board of education in handing out the diplomas. The students then stood and tossed their caps in the air in celebration of becoming the newest graduates of the high school.
Tri-M Music Honor Society The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Chapter 2172 of the Tri-M Music Honor Society recently hosted its 12th annual honors recital and induction. This year’s inductees are Monica Alexander, Marina KelleyRenda, Jillian Lawler, Rachel Park, Hannah
Skula, Jack Worrell and Peggy Yin. In addition to outstanding musical achievement, students are selected into the honor society on the basis of five points of distinction: scholarship, character, cooperation, leadership and service. The special
evening included an honors recital featuring performances by the new inductees, followed by a ceremony and reception. The Port Jefferson School District commends these students for their commitment to their academic and musical studies.
