On January 21st, Al Trost, a long time resident of Our Lady of Consolation celebrated his 90th birthday. Al was joined in this celebration by family, staff and friends he made over the years. Al keeps very busy and active by playing cards, doing trivia and enjoying the great food prepared for him, as well as participating in the Annual Golden Games, in which he has won many medals. Al grew up in Flushing and enlisted in the Army from October 1942 through December 1945.He later worked in the plumbing business, drove a cab and was employed by Commander Oil. When he married his wife Marie, in 1947, they relocated to Copiague where they were blessed with five children. Al’s family has now grown into 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

You either believe in it or you don’t, and you either allow it to dictate your path in life or you spend the majority of your time fighting against it. The choice is yours… or is it? People seem to have a habit of saying that things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately apparent at the moment, if ever. Timing, circumstance…

whatever the case may be, events have a way of working themselves out in such a way as to follow the trail of cause and effect, of coincidence and irony. And there we are in the middle, left trying to sort it all out. Sure, there are situations you may read more into, in your vain search for some kind of mystical, magical, cosmic connection, but others… well others you just simply can’t deny. They just are, blatantly and undeniably, obvious

for all but the most cynical among us to see – and to appreciate. If only we could see these instances for what they are, while they are occurring. Perhaps we could save ourselves a certain degree of unnecessary stress and aggravation, anguish and upheaval. If only… unfortunately, though, it often takes hindsight to gain that type of perspective. Life as we know it is, quite simply, just never that crystal clear.

A few days ago, I found a tick on my arm. Yes, I know what you’re thinking, a tick! These small bloodsucking creatures are the stuff of nightmares for many of Fire Island’s inhabitants. The deer tick, the carrier of Lyme Disease, is arguably the most unsettling. This minuscule monster is known for staying hidden. Many people do not even realize they have been bitten. The deer tick is the smallest of all of the species that crawl around Fire Island. In addition to the notorious red ring of Lyme Disease, ticks can also transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Where could I have

gotten a tick? Yesterday, as I was unlocking my bike to ride to work, I noticed a tick crawling on the fence post it was chained to. Sure enough, as I looked at the seat of my bike, a ‘questing’ tick was waiting for a meal. These ticks wait on an overhanging leaf or vine until something brushes up against them. Then they latch on and take advantage of their new host. How can you avoid getting ticks? It isn’t easy to tell what shade of clothing is least conducive to fostering ticks. Studies show that wearing dark clothing results in slightly fewer ticks actually on you, but lighter clothing enables

you to see the ticks and ultimately refrain from getting bitten. Check yourself for lingering ticks when you leave their environment and, if at all possible, avoid trekking through their home in the first place. If you do find yourself bitten, it is best to find immediate medical help. It is easier to treat the diseases contracted from ticks right away. It is also very hard to diagnose these ailments at home. This summer, while you are out and about, remember that ticks are an ever-present danger and you cannot be too careful. Always use bugspray, and remember to check yourself for ticks constantly.

COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY - Angie Carpenter, recently attended the 2013 Suffolk County Community College Commencement. “It is a great honor and privilege to attend the commencement at Suffolk County Community College. The Stony Brook University Alumni Association will donate $125,000 to establish the ‘Seawolves for Life Alumni Scholarship Fund’ to benefit scholarship support for undergraduate students at the University. The gift was matched in full by the Simons Foundation Challenge, creating a $250,000 philanthropic impact. The scholarship was created for the highest performing students who show the greatest financial need. Sherry Sussman, MD ’91, ’95, Immediate Past President of the Stony Brook Alumni Association, who received her undergraduate degree from Stony Brook and is a graduate of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine, is excited for the scholarship’s impact. “One of the goals of the Alumni Association is to enhance the lives of our current students. More than 300 hundred guests attended Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Annual “Jewels & Jeans” benefit dinner at Flowerfield in St. James recently, honoring three individuals with outstanding achievements, service to their community and generosity to Long Island. Honorees: DR. L. REUVEN PASTERNAK Chief Executive Officer, Stony Brook University Hospital Dr. Pasternak oversees more than 5,000 employees and over 1,000 affiliated and credentialed physicians. A native Long Islander, he came back to Stony Brook last year from Virginia where he served as CEO of the vast Inova Fairfax Hospital campus. Dr. Pasternak received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine and served on active duty with the U.S. Naval Medical Corps during Operation Desert Storm, retiring with the rank of Commander. 100TH ANNIVERSARY - On July 4th, the Village of Shoreham celebrated Independence Day. The holiday began with a parade and festivities that lasted throughout the day. This year’s celebration was not only a time for residents to celebrate Independence Day, but also a time to commemorate the village’s 100th anniversary. Legislator Sarah Anker presented a proclamation to the village’s Mayor, Roger Pijacki, on behalf of the centennial anniversary. Following the parade and ceremony, there were hotdogs and ice cream for all, as well as the annual softball game kicked off. The village continued its four-day celebration until Sunday, July 7th.

Catholic Health Services (CHS) recently presented its Living the Mission Award to Felix PabonRamirez for exemplifying the CHS mission values of respect, justice, integrity and excellence. PabonRamirez was nominated for his outstanding qualities and received the award from CHS’s Chairman Richard J.J. Sullivan, Jr. Pabon-Ramirez, of Sound Beach, is admired for challenging his team with positive encouragement, inspiring others with his

enthusiasm, courtesy and sense of humor. “He gives everything he has and then some,” said a colleague, adding, “He has raised the bar.” Assistant vice president of client services and continuing care for CHS’s Department of Information Technology, PabonRamirez is a licensed medical technologist. Prior to joining CHS in 1998, he was on staff at Bellevue Hospital Center/ NYU Medical Center for 10 years. He has taken

an active role in health care policy, lobbying for the licensing of medical technologists and participating in various charitable events. Over the years, PabonRamirez has also provided assistance at community health fairs, in addition to volunteering his time and skills at CHS’s Healthy Sundays events, which offer free health screenings, vaccinations and education to medically underserved Long Islanders.

Six Three Village Central School District junior high school students were named 2013 Brine National All-Stars and went on to represent the Long Island and Maryland regions at the 2013 Brine National All-Star Lacrosse Academy and Brine National Lacrosse Classic held in Boyds, Md., June 30th-July 3rd. The Brine National AllStar Lacrosse Academy brings the top middle school lacrosse players in the country to one venue, where regional teams are coached by NCAA lacrosse coaches and compete to

Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature in conjunction with the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce introduced the Bill Joel tribute band, Songs In The Attic, recently at the Nesconset Gazebo in front of a packed crowd of over 700 people. Many showed to hear the tribute to Long Islands cultural icon Billy Joel. The nights performance began with the singing of the National Anthem sung by Leane Rutigliano from Longwood Junior High School. Long Island Cares collaborated with Legislator Kennedy and the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce in order to collect food for the needy.

A plethora of food was gathered as always from our generous Smithtown residents who came to enjoy the concert. The Knights of Columbus were attendance promoting Operation Care Package, which is a charitable operation with the aim of sending care packages to troops in Afghanistan. The Knights of Columbus were able to collect over $1,100, which will be used to buy items soldiers need such as body wash, deodorant, and eye drops. “I would like to thank everyone who came out for the concert yesterday, and he would like to thank everyone for their generous donations to Long Island Cares, and

National Celebration

The Marine Corps Veterans, Long Island, New York recently led the Port Jefferson Fire Department’s annual 4th of July Parade. As they were forming up for the parade, a little boy and his mom walked by and the boy said “Happy Birthday,” wishing the unit and the United States a happy birthday. Glad to see

some spirit in the young ones! The Marines will be holding their Annual Birthday Ball, celebrating 238 years, on November 10th, including both active members and veterans. A tradition at the ball is that the oldest marine present and the youngest present hold a saber and cut the cake together. This

is meant to show the neverending line that the Corps is made of. Remember: Once A Marine, Always A Marine. As Ronald Reagan said, “Some people live an entire lifetime wondering if they ever made a difference in the world - the Marines don’t have that problem.”

Every Wednesday, senior citizens over the age of 62 will receive free admission to the Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo when accompanied by another person. That person will pay full price while the senior will be admitted free of charge (regularly $16.95 plus tax).

Many senior citizens have made attending the Long Island Game Farm a family tradition. They brought their children to the park when it first opened in 1970. Now, more and more seniors are the ones to bring their grandchildren for a fun and educational experience that the wildlife park offers.

Stony Brook University Professor Ellen Pikitch, a renowned expert in marine biology and conservation; Christopher Scott and Elyssa Hopkins, currently students in the Marine Conservation and Policy program in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook, were among the volunteer oyster gardeners gathered at the Tiana Beach Community Oyster Garden, where each received 1000 baby oysters (spat), which they will nurture to maturity. A number of the oyster gardener volunteers were recruited by the Shinnecock Bay Restoration Program (ShiRP), which was founded by the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) and its Institute for Ocean Conservation Science. “Restoring Shinnecock Bay requires dedication and a hands-on approach by scientists and residents in our communities,” said Dr. Pikitch, Executive Director of IOCS, ShiRP co-principal investigator (with SoMAS Prof. Christopher Gobler) and a Town of Southampton resident. “Raising these oysters is an extremely important initiative to improve the bay’s health, and I look forward to working
