According to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, Iasso’s reinvented school logo, originally designed by Chester Davis in 1935, will soon begin to appear on various school documents.

There’s something to be said for nostalgia, even the not-so-distant-past variety. I have a hard time viewing cultural happenings, music and movies from the 90’s as “classic” - however, when you realize that some of these momentous occasions are approaching their 15 and 20year anniversaries, well that gives things a whole new perspective. Recently, the National Geographic channel premiered a new miniseries focusing on this particular decade, causing many from my generation to take a step back and realize that some of those things that seemed like “just yesterday” in fact

occurred many yesterdays ago. Perhaps part of the reason behind this time lapse of sorts is the fact that many of my fellow late 20-somethings and early 30-somethings still live at home, in the same town in which they attended high school and football games, local bars and beaches, and continue to socialize with the same circle of close knit friends from their school days. Essentially, not much has changed – so it seems positively mind-blowing to think that nearly two decades have elapsed. Ah, but they have. And none of us is getting any younger in the process. A sobering thought, isn’t it? Of course, in reality,

much has changed. The world as a whole, to start, straight on down to the local neighborhood streets we used to casually stroll along. To think that reunions have come and gone, friends have married (and, in some cases divorced), and are in the process of raising children and buying homes of their own – “growing up,” as they say – well, it had to happen eventually. Personally, I enjoy a good trip down memory lane as much as the next person. It’s fun to reflect upon the people who have graced our lives, the person you were and the one you still hope to become. Nostalgia or no, there’s still plenty of time to rewrite the story along the way!

Family Program. “Being able to run around outside is a freeing experience for our Fresh Air child. I still enjoy watching her face as she takes joy in the simple things, like roasting a marshmallow or jumping into the lake,” says a Fresh Air host mom. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, notfor-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to

18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Over 65 percent of all children are reinvited to stay with their host families, year after year. Food Program Expands Responding to an increased demand to supply supplemental food to children who rely on school lunch programs, but may not get enough to eat when school is in summer recess, Island Harvest Food Bank today announced that it has expanded its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to 50 sites across Long Island. Last year the SFSP served 38,500 meals to 2,215 children through 28 sites in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This year, more than 75,000 meals are expected to be served to approximately 3,500 children participating in the program. “Summertime should be a carefree, fun and relaxing time for all children,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest. “Sadly, for many children who rely on school lunch programs,

Family Comes First From an early age, I have been raised with a certain code of morals. I have always been guided toward “being the bigger man” and making smart choices. I’ve always been expected to look out for my little brother, act as a second man of the house, and protect those who need protection. This code of conduct has been instilled in me through the diligent work of my parents. Although they have always made sure I was capable of handling myself, they are not helicopter parents. They kept their distance, preferring to test my competence rather than nurture a dependent child. I like to think that this style worked out. I attribute my personal character to their efforts. I was their first child.

They call me their “experiment,” but it seems like they knew what they were doing. After all, I’m still alive! Although it would be great if each baby came with an owner’s manual, that is not the case. There is no personalized guide to raising a life. That is why I have the utmost respect for my parents. As my mom grew up in the Ukraine, she was not afforded the generous opportunities that I am. Her upbringing has taught me to seize every chance. When the opportunity arose for me to write in a newspaper, she pushed me to take it. All of this has built my character and molded me into the person I need to be. In order to conquer the world as I move through my life, I try to apply the

life lessons handed down from my parents. My mannerisms, persona, outlook and mentality have all been influenced by my mom and dad. My dad is, and always has been, concerned with hard work. He grew up knowing the value of effort. He prodded me into getting a job when I was just thirteen. It was my idea, rooted in his morals. I have always tried to make my parents proud. However, they are truly responsible for making me the man I am today. I will always treasure my parents. They are the people who shaped me. They are solely responsible for nurturing me. I will always cherish the unconditional love and support that can only come from one source...Family.

Island Harvest’s SFSP is administered by the Food and Nutrition Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the New York State Department of Education. At the local level, the program is managed by USDA-approved sponsors like Island Harvest. Under the SFSP, lunch meals will be provided to all children 18 years and under without charge at designated sites. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, age, or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Marching On

Members of the Division 22 teamed up to march in the annual 4th of July parade in Port Jefferson despite the rain. While the sky was dry during the pre-parade hours, a 25% chance of rain loomed thanks to pending tropical storm Arthur coming up the east coast. As the parade stepped off promptly at 10 a.m. down, flags waived and spectators cheered with pride at the Independence Day event as a mild rain began to fall. While the crowds were much less than normal due to the prevailing rain,

the exuberance of those that lined Main Street showed no sign of being dampened by the rain. The rain intensity continued to build as the parade marched on. Providing the cadence for the group’s march down Main Street was the Coast Guard Auxiliary Band (22-07). “We really wanted to march in this very patriotic parade in Port Jefferson in honor of the 75th Anniversary of the Coast Guard Auxiliary this year,” commented Band Flotilla Commander, John Sasso. “The rain began just as the

parade was starting and progressively got worse, but we marched on.” The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is the allvolunteer branch of the United States Coast Guard, established by Congress in 1939 to assist in promoting boating safety. During its July 1st meeting, the Port Jefferson Board of Education recognized junior Joseph Iasso for his work in redesigning and digitizing the school district’s logo, which the board unanimously supported. According to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, Iasso’s reinvented school logo, originally designed by Chester Davis in 1935, will soon begin to appear on

various school documents. Iasso took on the task of redesigning the logo after attempting to use the former one for a project and finding that as he enlarged it, its quality diminished. “I decided I wanted to make it look more artistic,” he said. In his redesign, Iasso added new seahorses, a compass, an anchor and a boat. He also took some artistic liberty in adding a

crown to the top. “The crown really represents the school because we are the Royals,” he said. Assistant Principal Christine Austen praised Iasso’s work and said Iasso is a student who always makes things happen behind the scenes, from organizing the school’s junior prom to working on the district’s safety committee.

A Time To Remember Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., and the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce continued the 2014 Free Summer Concert Series Tuesday night with “Songs In The Attic” playing everyone’s favorite Billy Joel songs from Piano Man to We Didn’t Start the Fire to My Life and Moving Out. This annual event attracted even more people than last week and once final tallies are made, a new record for largest crowd most likely will have been set, with concertgoers still entering the show an hour or more into the show. As with previous concerts, community service groups had a presence in the crowd in order to take in monetary and food donations for Long Island Cares, founded by the late Harry Chapin, to help feed residents in need as well as Operation Care Package who collected personal items to send to U.S. Armed Forces overseas. In 2013, concertgoers at the Nesconset Concert Series gave over $6,000 in donations to Long Island Cares but with record sized crowds already at the first two concerts of the 2014 season, the donations from 2013 may easily be eclipsed. (NAPSI)—Your next barbecue may be better if you follow these 10 tips from the experts at the United States Department of Agriculture on keeping food safe when cooking outside: 1. When shopping, buy meat and poultry last. Choose packages that feel cold and are not torn. Separate raw meat and poultry from other food in your shopping cart to guard against crosscontamination. Plan to go directly home from the grocery store. 2. At home, freeze or refrigerate meat and poultry immediately. Freeze poultry and ground meat that won’t be used in a day or two; freeze other meat within four or five days. 3. Completely thaw meat and poultry before grilling so it cooks evenly. Use the refrigerator for slow, safe thawing or thaw sealed packages in cold water. You can microwave defrost if the food will be placed immediately on the grill. 4. Keep meat and poultry

cold until you’re ready to put it on the grill. If you’re carrying food to another location, keep it in an insulated cooler with sufficient ice or ice packs so it stays at 40° F or below. Keep the cooler out of the direct sun and avoid opening the lid too often. 5. Start with clean hands-wash them for at least 20 seconds with warm, soapy water—and a clean grill and utensils. 6. Be sure the grill is hot enough to safely cook your food. 7. Remember, meat and poultry cooked on a grill often brown very fast on the outside. Use a thermometer to be sure the food has reached a safe minimum internal temperature—poultry: 165° F; ground meats: 160° F; beef, pork, lamb and veal, steaks, chops and roasts: 145° F-and allow to rest at least three minutes before carving or consuming. 8. Keep hot food hot. After cooking meat and poultry on the grill, keep it hot until served—at 140°

F or warmer. Refrigerate perishable food within two hours (one hour if the temperature is 90° F or above). 9. When taking food off the grill, use a clean platter. Don’t put cooked food on the same platter that held raw meat or poultry. Any harmful bacteria present in the raw meat juices could contaminate safely cooked food. 10. Refrigerate any leftovers promptly in shallow containers. Discard any food left out more than two hours (one hour if temperatures are above 90° F). Bacteria can grow rapidly between 40° and 140° F. Ten residents from St. Johnland Nursing Center participated in the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center’s Annual Art Expression Program Tea & Art Exhibit. The exhibit showcases the remarkable and creative efforts of the residents of 27 facilities located on Long Island

who are suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. These artists created the artwork between September 2013 and March 2014 as part of ADRC’s Art Expression Program, where ADRC staff members worked with the staff members and residents at the different facilities to bring

their creative thoughts to life. The artwork was then brought to ADRC in Bay Shore, where it is on display with a biography and photo of each artist. The paintings will are on display and available for sale, with all proceeds benefiting ADRC’s Art Expression Program.

Juried Art Exhibition The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce it is hosting an exhibition of paintings/ sculpture this August as part of the first annual “North Fork Annual,” a juried art exhibition that will feature a $500 purchase prize that will be awarded to the best artwork in the exhibit. The show will be held in the Society’s Reichert Family Center’s Cosden-Price Gallery. This exhibit will be on display from August 9th through August 23rd, in the gallery, which is located at 54127 Main Road, Southold. The $500 “Thomas Currie-Bell Memorial Purchase Prize” - which will be awarded to the best work in the show - is named in honor of Southold painter Thomas Currie-Bell (1873-1946). A native of Scotland who trained extensively in Great Britain, Currie-Bell came to America in 1929 and settled in Southold,

from where he traveled up and down the east coast, painting portraits and local scenery. His wife, Ann Hallock Currie-Bell, was the founder and first president of the Southold Historical Society, where a number of his paintings can be viewed. Artists from all over the east end of Long Island were invited to participate in the exhibition, as long as they either ‘resided on’ or ‘worked on’ the North Fork. Entries will be scrutinized by the two jurors; Sean Cleary, Chief Operating Officer of the well-respected Phillips Auction House of New York City; and Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society and author of several books and catalogs on the history and art of Long Island. Out of the submissions, only 20 works will be selected to be included in the “North Fork Annual”

exhibition. It will be from those works that the purchase prize winner will be selected. The work selected as the winner of the prize will join the permanent collection of the historical society. The winner will be announced at the opening reception for the exhibition, which is being held on Friday, August 8th from 5:30 to 7 p.m. All of the remaining artworks selected for the exhibition will be available for sale at that time and for the duration of the exhibition. Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s ReStore, located in Ronkonkoma, has been successful in raising funds for its affordable home building program for the past eight years. The success of the ReStore is only possible through the generous donations of building materials and supplies from local businesses on Long Island. Habitat Suffolk has been fortunate to be on the receiving end of thousands of donations from many individuals in addition

to hundreds of small and large businesses that help the organization grow and become more successful each year. One of ReStore’s most valuable partners is Costello’s Ace Hardware. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider

technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over

your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it.
