arl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Allegra FilsAime recently competed at the 2015 New Balance National Outdoor Championship, which took place from June 19th through June 21st in North Carolina. During the event, FilsAime competed against 37 athletes in the triple jump. She jumped 38’ 2”, finishing in 22nd place. The competition culminated her career as a high school athlete. So Operation: Explore NYC on Foot was a success. Mostly. This time, we decided to mix a little mass transit in to maximize our time spent experiencing the cultural offerings. You would think that would have eliminated some of the mileage; but, at day’s end, my handy app determined that we had still somehow managed to cover 25,695 steps, or 10.71 miles. Just a walk in the park. Literally. The thing about mass transit is that it doesn’t travel through Central Park. Shocking, I know. So, between our two trips clear across the entire width, plus plenty of aimless meandering down paths that, apparently, don’t travel in any particular direction, well, the miles definitely added up.

Luckily, this time, I was smart enough to wear comfortable, albeit flat, shoes. No unscheduled Duane Reade stops for us this time around! But still, after about eight hours of standing, walking, climbing… the searing pain in the ball of your foot is pretty much the same, flip flops or no. By the time we had explored Strawberry Fields, The Dakota, Belvedere Castle, the Shakespeare Garden and the Great Lawn, it was time for a snack. This was followed by a solid three hours perusing the European paintings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, circling through gallery after gallery, until those incredibly uncomfortable-looking benches began to look pretty cushy. Back through the Park we headed, this time passing the Bethesda Terrace and

Fountain, the Bow Bridge, and winding up at the famed Central Park Boathouse Restaurant. Knowing we were cutting it a little close, with no reservation, we hovered hopefully right as the dinner service began. Thankfully, we landed a prime spot overlooking the lake. As we finished up, we had precisely 45 minutes to make our way out of the Park, across to the other side and down about a dozen blocks to Lincoln Center, where we had tickets to the American Ballet Theatre’s production of Cinderella. Doable. Sort of. As we ran across the plaza to the Metropolitan Opera House, change of shoes in hand, the clock struck 7:30 p.m. Inside, a long line stretched through the lobby with dozens of patrons waiting at the Will Call window to pick up their tickets. Just. Made. It.

A brand new adventure business that caters to animal lovers and luxury travel called Destination Animal Sanctuary will kick off this summer on Long Island with their first tour starting with For the Love of Horses! Jennifer Ross an avid animal lover, strategic marketing entrepreneur and Long Island native who has been on many animal adventure tours across the country, started Destination Animal Sanctuary. “I wanted to start educational, fun and meaningful tours for people that love animals like I do, and be able to give back to these incredible non-profit organizations at the same time,” said Jennifer Ross, Founder of Destination Animal Sanctuary. “Kicking off the tour on Long Island to bring people to visit some of our extraordinary equine facilities that give back, rescue and help people is very exciting! given ailments. Many of the horses in their care were rescued from dire situations and now providing incredible loving care and therapy to people. After the inspirational morning at Pal-O-Mine, the second stop of the tour is at Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard and Horse Rescue in Baiting Hollow. Guests will soak in the countryside for a gourmet lunch and after sample three wine tastings while overlooking the horse rescue and sanctuary on the premises. After lunch, guests will enjoy a guided tour of the absolutely stunning horse rescue farm to learn why this rescue was started, meet the beautiful horses like Angel and Mirage, learn their stories – and how they became the namesakes of the vineyards most popular wines. On the way back home the bus will stop at a favorite farm stand that has locally harvested seasonal produce grown on Long Island’s north shore in Suffolk County. A portion of the proceeds for this event will go to help both Pal-O-Mine and Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard and Horse Rescue. Summer Arts Festival

The Annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival week 4 starts Tuesday, July 14th and runs through Sunday, July 19th. Join at 8:30 p.m. every night, except the Tuesday Night Family Series which starts at 7:30 p.m. The performances are held at the Chapin Rainbow Stage, Heckscher Park located on Prime Ave & Main Street in Huntington. Sol y Sombra will join on Friday, July 17th, combining multiple Hispanic dance forms such as Argentine Tangos, Latin Caribbean, Mexican & Spanish dance, Flamenco, and even Hip-Hop. Grammy award winner Arturo O’Farrill & The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra performs a combination of cultural experiences and great jazz music on Saturday, July 18th. This event supported by a grant from NYS Presenters Network. L.I. Dance Consortium will end week four on Sunday, July 19th, with special presentations from Long Island Dance Theatre, American Dance Theatre of Long Island, Long Island Dance Company, Ohman Ballet, and the American Theatre Dance Workshop. All performances

during the Summer Arts Festival are free and held on the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park, Huntington. The festival runs from June 25th through August 9th. New Balance Competitor Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Allegra Fils-Aime recently competed at the 2015 New Balance National Outdoor Championship, held June 19th through June 21st, in North Carolina. During the event, FilsAime competed against 37

athletes in the triple jump. She jumped 38’2” finishing in twenty-second place. The competition culminated her career as a high school athlete. During her time in the Port Jefferson School District, she earned All-League in the triple jump and holds

the second place in the county title. She also medaled at the NYS track meet, finishing fifth. Fils-Aime will attend Wesleyan University in the fall, where she will continue to participate in track.

Mr. Miller was elected as Director of the Brookhaven Village Association in 2006 where he served for four

years. In 2010, Mr. Miller was elected to the position of Vice President and was elected as President of the Association in 2014. During his time as a member of the BVA, Mr. Miller served on both the Brookhaven Community Coalition and the Landfill Liaison Committee since

their inception. He worked to restore the historic bridge on Beaver Dam Road and worked with the NYSDEC and the Town of Brookhaven to maintain a public footpath to the marshes at the end of Mott Lane in Brookhaven Hamlet.

Summer Historical Tours Are you a curious history buff looking for something to do this summer? The Huntington Historical Society has the answer! The David Conklin Farmhouse, located at 2 High Street, will be open on Sunday’s and Friday beginning July 5th, from 1 to 4 p.m., admission $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for seniors and children. The Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building, located at 228 Main Street, will be open on Sundays, beginning July 12th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is FREE. “The Conklin House is participating the ‘Hunt Around Huntington’ scavenger hunt that is being sponsored by the Cold Spring Harbor

Whaling Museum, and the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building is right next to the Farmer’s Market and host to “The Civil War Comes Home: Huntington During The 1860’s,” so we really wanted to make sure we had these historic treasures were open and accessible to the public,” remarked Assistant Director Wendy Andersen. The David Conklin Farmhouse was occupied by the Conklin family for over one-hundred and fifty years, and contains the original rooms of the house constructed c. 1750. This includes the area where Sybel Conklin and her children lived and worked while her husband, David, was held prisoner

by the British in 1777. The house is interpreted to illustrate three periods of the country’s history: Colonial, Federal and Victorian. The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building was completed in 1892 as a memorial to the 40 townsmen who died in the Civil War. It served as the Huntington Public Library until 1958. The building was then used by various organizations and from 1969 on, has served as the home to the Town Historian. It was acquired and restored by the Huntington Historical Society, opening in 2008 as Museum.

PORT JEFF PARADE - On July 4th, members of the Port Jefferson Fire Department, local elected officials, civic organizations and many other participants joined together at the annual Independence Day Parade. This year’s participants included neighboring fire departments such as Stony Brook, Setauket, Selden, Centereach, and Ansonia Fire Department from across the sound in Connecticut. Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, the Three Village Community Trust, dance studios, and classic and specialty car clubs also participated. In addition, there were several marching bands and a host of other community groups.

Board Begins New Year The Three Village Central School District Board of Education commenced the start of the 2015-2016 school year during their annual organizational meeting on July 7th in the North Country Administrative Center. At the start of the meeting, re-elected

trustees William F. Connors, Jr. and Deanna Bavlnka were administered the oath of office by District Clerk Kathleen Sampogna and officially began serving their new three year terms of office. Subsequently, Mr. Connors and Irene Gische were unanimously re-elected to serve as the 2015-2016 president and

Distant Memories Swim Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is pleased to announce that Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident and a physical education teacher, will lead a team of swimmers in the 12th Annual Distant Memories Swim on Tuesday, July 28th, in order to draw attention to this devastating disease that impacts over 60,000 families here on Long Island. In its lifetime, The Swim has raised in excess of $100,000 for those with Alzheimer’s disease and their unpaid caregivers. Opening ceremonies are expected to begin promptly at 9 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will take to the water at 9:15 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will start out at Asharoken Beach and swim across Northport Bay to Knollwood Beach in Huntington - a distance of approximately 2.0 nautical miles (less than 3 miles). The swim will also help

raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. through sponsorships and corporate donors. The goal is to raise $20,000 to help support services and programs for Long Island families coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. “Bryan is a champion for those with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. He is a role model for the youth of our country,” states Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/ Chief Executive Officer of Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “He has continuously expressed the sentiment that he wants to raise awareness about this deadly disease and help families who live on Long Island.” Over 5 million people in this country are currently living with Alzheimer’s

Disease, with more than 200,000 individuals under the age of 65. The social, economical, and emotional impact of this disease can be devastating to individuals and families. “It is my hope that substantial funds will be raised to assist Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center in providing for people with dementia and other related disorders,” Mr. Proctor said. Shark Tournament Winners Star Island’s 29th annual Shark Tournament was held on June 19th-20th at Star Island Yacht Club. One hundred eighteen boats took part in the two-day event. Fifty fish were caught during the tournament, including 23 Makos, 13 Blue Sharks, and 14 Threshers. The biggest winner was Anthony Vaccaro, whose prize catch - a 470-pound Mako - aboard his boat White Water Marine, earned him honors for Heaviest Overall Shark, First Heaviest Mako, and Day Two, Heaviest Shark. The Second Heaviest Mako,

at 349 pounds, was brought in by Bob Kirschbert aboard Rick Davies’ Over Spray. John Brunelle on his Lady Irene caught a 334-pound Mako, earning him Third Heaviest Mako honors. The First Heaviest Blue Shark, at 221 pounds, was caught by Joe Mattiolo on Fred Ippolito’s Solivia Rose. There was a tie for Second Heaviest Blue Shark, as Chris Fallow aboard Scott Oster’s Isabetto and Randy Epright aboard Brinton Epright’s Pension Plan each snagged a 219-pound Blue Shark.
