One day. How difficult can it be to truly remove oneself from our surroundings and instead become immersed in the peace and tranquility of utter respite for one continuous 24-hour period? Turns out, much more so than anticipated.

It’s funny, I generally fluctuate between moving manically from one task to another, barely coming up for air, to spending an entire day doing what can only be adequately described as vegetating. There is rarely an in-between mode. Given five days to play with, I spent the better part of two going full speed ahead, and the others, well - recovering from said adventures. Come time to return to work, and I was just about ready for another minibreak.
Relaxation? That’s a foreign word for another day; certainly no time for that during the course of limited “free” time we each hold onto like a precious commodity. Irony noted, of course. Try it yourself. Take one day, and attempt to leave it open, free of any scheduled tasks but the ones you choose to engage in on a whim. Remove yourself completely - no phone, no e-mail, no contact. Start with an hour. See how it feels. Build from there. Who knows, you might just reach the end of the day feeling completely refreshed and reinvigorated. Or bored out of your mind. No harm in finding out either way.

4th of July Parade On July 4th, amidst crowds of participants and waving flags, Brookhaven Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright celebrated Independence Day and marched in the annual Port Jefferson Fourth of July parade. The route bounded down
Main Street through Port Jefferson Village to the cheers of onlookers and included fire departments, civic and fraternal groups, floats and the “Wholly Brass Band.” Councilwoman Cartright said, “The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate the
incredible freedoms we have in this country. There are so many places around the world that do not have the opportunities that we have in the United States. Each year this holiday provides the time to reflect and celebrate what it means to be American.”

We are looking for volunteers to deliver meals to the homebound elderly in the Smithtown community. Meals are delivered in the late morning each Monday Friday and require as little
as two hours a week, one to four days per month. You can even choose to be a “back-up” driver if your time is limited. Our volunteers use their own vehicles and are reimbursed for mileage. Volunteer with a friend and share the experience! If you have the time to spare, we would love to have you join our wonderful group of volunteers. Summer Nature Programs Councilwoman Jane Bonner has announced the 2018 schedule of Summer Nature Programs at the Town’s Marine Environmental Stewardship Center at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. All programs are free, but registration is required. For more information or to register, e-mail Environmental Educator Nicole Pocchaire at npocchiare@ brookhavenny.gov. Please leave your name, phone number, and the number of people attending. Groups will meet at the Marine Environmental Stewardship Center. Please park in the Cedar Beach main lot and walk to the center. Use the trail starting by the basketball courts. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Programs will not run in inclement weather. Councilwoman Bonner said, “Cedar Beach is one of the most beautiful locations in all of Brookhaven Town. It’s a wonderful place to get up close and personal with nature and the best way to do it is to participate in our Summer Nature programs. I encourage everyone to take advantage of all the Town has to offer this summer and throughout the year.” The Marine

The 2018 schedule of Summer Nature Programs are: Junior Beach Steward July 21st and August 18th at 2:00 p.m. Ages 11 and older This program will give participants an opportunity for hands-on discovery of the unique beach and marsh ecosystems. Not only will we hike, explore, and try to solve nature’s mysteries, but we will engage in conservation efforts like species monitoring, clean-ups and plantings. *** Growing Up Wild July 7th and August 4th at 2:00 p.m. Ages 3 to 5
Parents and grandparents are invited to explore nature with their little ones. Each class will focus on a different nature topic and will include a story time, live animals and a related craft or activity *** Full Moon Walk August 24th at 7:00 p.m. All ages Watch the sun set and the full moon rise on this fun family walk. Learn common moon phases and phrases, how moon cycles impact nature and which nocturnal animals call the beach home. Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker would like to remind the community that the 2018 Downtown Rocky Point Summer Concert Series, hosted in conjunction with Rocky Point VFW Post 6249 will start on Tuesday, July 10th. The four concerts will be held at St. Anthony’s of Padua Parish in downtown Rocky Point (614 Rt.25A, Rocky Point) and will begin at 7:00 p.m. The concerts draw thousands of attendees and help support local businesses. Admission is free and attendees are encouraged

Anniversary Commemorated Legislator Susan A. Berland, Chairwoman of the Legislature’s Veterans Committee attended a ceremony hosted by the Korean War Veterans Central Long Island Chapter and the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency, honoring the 68th Anniversary of the beginning of the Korean
War. In attendance was County Executive Steve Bellone, the Honorable Ambassador Hyo-Sung Park, Consulate General of the Republic of Korea and the Honorable Ertan Yalcin, Consul General of the Republic of Turkey. “I was honored to participate in the ceremony recognizing the 68th anniversary of the
beginning of the Korean War and those who served in Korea,” said Legislator Berland. “I am grateful to our friends from The Republic of Korea and The Republic of Turkey for joining us in the recognition of those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta recognized John M. Bennett of Boy Scout Troop 7 at his recent Eagle Scout Court of Honor. John earned the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout by completing a labor intensive community based project at the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown.

Amidst a crowd of cheering doctors and admirers gathered outside Cohen Children’s Medical Center, cystic fibrosis (CF) survivor and advocate Jerry Cahill kicked off the first of 50 Century Rides to prove that, as he says, “there is nothing you can’t achieve.” Mr. Cahill, a Boomer Esiason Foundation Ambassador who turned 62 just two days before the bike ride, decided that he would do a 100-mile bike ride in each of the 50 states “as a personal goal and a challenge.” The idea, he said, was to prove to children living with CF and their parents that “people with CF are normal…they can do things…and it’s important to believe that you are normal.” Diagnosed at age 10 with CF, Mr. Cahill began treatment at Schneider Children’s Hospital (now known as Cohen) and continued as a patient there for many years. Back then, the life expectancy for a CF child was between 16-18 years. Mr. Cahill’s parents, however, thought differently. They decided that if their son wasn’t destined for a long life, he would spend lots of time with his brothers - and that meant football, basketball, baseball, running and pole vaulting. The plan worked. Mr. Cahill is a powerful advocate for exercise, crediting his pole vault experience and physical fitness regimen with his longevity. His documentary, Up for Air, followed his journey through training, treatments and a double lung transplant - all with the goal of shedding new
light on the prospect of living with CF. In celebration of his 62nd birthday on June 27th, Mr. Cahill decided that the Century Rides would be the perfect way “to bring awareness to the disease and to show people with CF that everything is possible.” Mr. Cahill was introduced to the well-wishers by Katherine Sneddon, a 23-year-old CF patient who is currently pursuing an advanced degree in physical therapy. Much like Mr. Cahill, Ms. Sneddon maintains that exercise contributes greatly to her positive mental attitude. “Exercise is not only vital to staying healthy, but it also helps me stay engaged in my life,” said Ms. Sneddon. “I’m so much more than a person with an illness - I’m an athlete.” The Levittown resident explained how a life spent playing soccer and lacrosse, and running track has kept her healthy. “Like Jerry, it’s helped me fight infection, clear my lungs and stay positive. I run marathons and participate in 5-borough bike tours. For me, exercise is medicine.” Joan DeCelie-Germana, MD, the pediatric pulmonologist who treats Ms. Sneddon at Cohen, said that the hospital’s Cystic Fibrosis Center has been providing comprehensive care to CF patients from infancy to adulthood for almost 50 years. “The hospital is accredited by the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a designation reserved for those Centers that meet the highest standards in cystic fibrosis diagnosis, treatment, education, and research. And, we are also designated as a research site for the CF Therapeutics Development Network - the largest CF clinical trials network in the world.” Mr. Cahill, who bikes about 12 miles an hour,

while the nearly 1,500 wet specimens, recently conserved, are organized and returned to their exhibition cases. Supported by a $135,000 grant from The Robert David Lion
Gardiner Foundation, the conservation project began in the summer of 2015. Work included conserving five taxidermied flamingos and a group of dry-mounted fish specimens, the repair of three shore bird

Marine Museum Reopens Continued From 16 legacy, a marine and natural history museum for the education and enjoyment of the people of Long Island and beyond.” The specimen conservation work was completed in New Jersey at Wildlife Preservations, the studio of taxidermist
George Dante. He and his colleagues cleaned decades of dust from the specimens, touched up fins and feathers, and returned them to the Vanderbilt. Sean Murtha, an artist who specializes in fineart background paintings for museum dioramas, recreated an eight-by-
ten foot painting of the ocean floor to replace the faded original created in 1924. Thomas Doncourt, a foreground artist, restored the habitat in the Caribbean shore bird dioramas, which included recreating a crumbled section of beach in one diorama. Murtha also restored sections of
the paintings in those dioramas. Murtha and Doncourt are both former staff members of the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) and Dante is a top AMNH taxidermy consultant. The three are part of the continuous, centurylong Vanderbilt-AMNH
collaboration that began when William Vanderbilt (1878-1944) hired artisans and scientists from the museum to design the Habitat dioramas in his own new museum in the 1920s. Vanderbilt also hired artist William Belanske, who accompanied him on his world voyages and became
his resident artist and curator. Over the past several years, the three artists also completed extensive work on the wild-animal dioramas in the museum’s Stoll Wing, funded by two $100,000 grants from the Roy M. Speer Foundation.
