Submitted By Michael Sceiford - Edward Jones Port Jefferson Here’s an interesting statistic: Over the past three decades, the centenarian population in the United States has grown about 66%, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a good chance of living to 100 — but the possibility may not be as remote as it once was. In any case, if you do plan to retire in your mid-60s, and you are in good health, you may well have two, or even three, decades ahead of you. To enjoy this time to the fullest — and to help prevent the possibility of outliving your financial resources — you will need to invest for income and growth throughout your retirement years. As a retiree, how much income do you need from your investments? There’s no one “right” percentage for everyone. Furthermore, you shouldn’t have to rely solely on your investment portfolio, because you may have other sources — such as Social Security and potentially your employer-sponsored retirement plan — from which to draw income. Nonetheless, your investments can play a big role in providing you with the income you’ll need during retirement. Many retirees depend on fixed-rate investments for a good portion of their retirement income — so it’s a real challenge when interest rates are low, as they have been for the past several years. Consequently, when you retire, you’ll certainly need to be aware of the interest-rate environment and the income you can expect from these investments. Longer-term fixed-rate vehicles may be tempting, as they typically offer higher rates than shorter-term ones, but these longer-term investments may have more price fluctuation and inflation risk than shorter-term investments. Ultimately, you’ll likely need a balance between short-, intermediate- and longterm fixed-income investments to provide for a portion of your income in retirement. While it’s important to invest for income, you can’t ignore the need for growth — because you won’t want to lose purchasing power to inflation. As you know, we’ve experienced quite mild inflation recently. But over time, even a low rate of inflation can seriously erode your purchasing power. To illustrate: If your current monthly costs are $3,000, they will be about $4,000 in 10 years with only a 3% annual inflation rate. And in 25 years at that same rate, your monthly costs will have more than doubled, to about

The Highlight Reel By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As we head into the 4th of July holiday, allow me to share some excerpts of a column from the archives, written back in the fall of 2005, just a few short months after I began my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers… I met Don Mattingly. No, let me elaborate…I didn’t just meet him; I interviewed him, one-onone, for a solid fifteen minutes. Don Mattingly, one of my favorite players of all time…a living legend. And I did it while working for this very newspaper. The opportunity came about after I received an e-mail at work regarding a local autographsigning event. My initial reaction? When I went home that day, I excitedly announced to my mother, “I want to go! Wouldn’t that be cool? I can get his autograph!” My mother just looked at me, perplexed, and said, “You can cover it, can’t you? You
work for the paper, remember?” Oh. Right. The next day, I contacted the public relations firm that had put out the press release and was told that, yes, they would love for someone from our paper to cover the event, and would I maybe like to speak with Mr. Mattingly prior to the signing? Would I?! Was that even a question? By the time Mattingly arrived at the event, the line was already stretched around the building, with more people arriving every minute, and so I was forced to wait until the very end to do the interview. It was worth the wait. Once the crowd dispersed, the few people remaining headed into the back of the store where more items were lined up for Mattingly to sign for charity. A girl who worked for his agent explained to him who I was and would he mind answering a few questions while he signed? “No, not at all,” he replied in that soft Indiana accent of his, and motioned for me to stand next to him at the table.
I proceeded to go down my list of questions. To my pleasant surprise, Mattingly answered each one thoroughly, pausing to consider his answers first, and then carefully explained his responses in great detail – definitely not your typical 15-second sound bite. It was as if I had known him for years. He was a true gentleman, full of class, and extremely humble. The image absolutely matched the reality. Considering he had just been signing autographs for a solid three hours – twice as long as scheduled – he gave no impression of being bothered by any of it, no impression of being “above” such things as an interview with a local paper that he had probably never heard of. On the way home that night, my mother asked, “So, did you ever imagine you would have the chance to interview Don Mattingly while working for your hometown paper? Never in my wildest dreams.

The Fight Resumes
Eminent Domain can be defined as the right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use, with payment of compensation. What this means is that whenever the government feels like it, they can kick you out of your house and onto the streets. Some people are theorizing that Governor Cuomo will enact Eminent Domain rights on Fire Island. He would do this by forcing oceanfront residents to sell their houses and get out, just so a little sand dune could be built. There have been artificial dunes built in the past, yet they are not there today. They have all been washed away over time. What makes this proposed plan any different than the plan from ten
years ago? Hundreds of people will have to sell their homes. Hundreds of people will have to leave the island on which they grew up. Are these prospective dunes truly worth our residences? There is no guarantee that the mounds of sand will stand the test of time. Most artificial dunes are gone within the year. Only Mother Nature can choose when the sand comes and when the sand goes. This isn’t the first time that the American Government has tried to take our houses. Following Hurricane Katrina, thousands of people wanted to just seize huge swaths of land, basically condemning the city. In what world is tearing down a city more beneficial than trying to rebuild it?

I’m sure Albany has their reasons, but in the case of Fire Island, Eminent Domain is not the best solution. The vast majority of the oceanfront homes went undamaged following Hurricane Sandy. My house, like many others, is one of the structurally sound, oceanfront houses threatened by Eminent Domain. The benefits within rebuilding our houses strongly outweigh the need for a temporary dune. Fire Island, as a community, is urging our representatives to stop talking about Eminent Domain. In theory, it is a good plan; but when enacted, we will all find that it will not succeed. Do the right thing, protect our homes, not our sand.

On May 31st, Councilwoman Jane Bonner attended the Court of Honor ceremony for members of Boy Scout Troop 244 in Rocky Point and Sound Beach who attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. “Eagle Scouts are the leaders of tomorrow, and from what I can tell by the achievements and community service of these
young men, our future is in very good hands,” said Councilwoman Bonner. To become an Eagle Scout, a scout must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership, and perform an approved community service project. For Kyle Blessing’s project he constructed a stage to be used in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church’s Witzman Hall.

On June 14th, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright attended the sixth annual “Green Fest” sponsored by the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce. The Green Fest is an opportunity for “green” vendors and service providers to showcase their businesses and also provide the community with an opportunity to learn about environmentally friendly practices, foods, services, and products. The event, which included over 45 unique vendors, also showcased a green market, a farmers market and four different bands. Dressed in purple and white caps and gowns, the 2014 Earl L. Vandermeulen High School graduating class was warmly greeted by friends, family, teachers and administrators as they took their places at their graduation ceremony on June 27th. Held on the high school’s athletic grounds, the ceremony began with a welcome speech by Student Organization President Kirsten Crovello, who told her classmates that they are set to embark on a new journey where they can reinvent themselves. “We can step out of our comfort zone, take every opportunity afforded to us and travel,” she said. In his address, salutatorian Kent Ueno
spoke of the cooperation among his fellow students, who, he noted, had always been there to lend a hand. “While each of us has our quirks,” he said, “we all have cooperation and have helped to mold and shape each other over the past four years.” Parent speaker Dominick Famularo, who travels the world as a motivational speaker, gave sage advice to the graduates, but not before first taking a “selfie” with them. In his speech, Famularo told the graduates to always listen, to find their passion, to understand that dreams can change, and to never look at an obstacle as a problem, but rather as a challenge. “You can rise to a challenge,” he said.
Dr. Kenneth Bossert, superintendent of schools, reminded students that while they are leaving the Port Jefferson school district, they would “forever be part of our Royal family.” Rather than give a typical graduation speech, valedictorian Danielle Grier chose instead to deliver her words in the form of a thoughtfully worded rhyming poem in which she reflected on the past. In ceremonial tradition, Dr. Bossert presented each member of the graduating class with a diploma, after which Principal Matthew Murphy wished the students well in their future endeavors.

On June 26th, over 600 residents attended the third annual JobHaven. org Job Fair held at Brookhaven Town Hall. The free event, which was sponsored by the Division of Economic Development and the Brookhaven Business Advisory Council (BBAC), gave job hunters the opportunity to meet face-to-face with representatives from 55 companies in and around Brookhaven who are
looking to hire qualified candidates for a wide range of positions. The companies and institutions that participated in the JobHaven.org Job Fair included Aflac, Cablevision, Astoria Bank, ShopRite, Amneal Pharmaceuticals, New York Life Insurance, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, the US Army, Suffolk Transportation and Coldwell Banker Real

Eight Eagles Honored
Recycling Program
Recently, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright visited the Comsewogue Senior High School to announce the school’s participation in the Town’s pilot program that promotes single
stream recycling in schools. The Town provided a large container and Curby Cans to the school that students use to deposit their recyclables. Once a week, the Town collects them at no charge to the
school district. The other school districts that are currently participating in the Town’s pilot program include William Floyd, Rocky Point and Center Moriches.
On June 20th, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright joined Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn and representatives from the offices of Senators Ken LaValle and John Flanagan to honor eight new Eagle Scouts from Troop 117 in the Three Village Community. To earn their “Eagle” status, each scout was responsible for taking on an individual and unique project for the benefit of the community, and seeing it through to completion. The scouts honored and their projects are as
follows: Daniel Marco Adrion, who built a pond and waterfall at Murphy Jr. High School, Jeffrey Lee Bohn, who beautified the side entrance at Gelinas Jr. High School, Nicholas Salvatore Castellano, who built a sand box at Messiah Lutheran Church, Thomas Henry Hull, who beautified the 1850s orphan cemetery at Caroline Church, David William Klecher, who beautified the Stony Brook Community Church garden, Jonathan Francesco McCarthy, who installed three benches and planted a tree at
Minnesauke Elementary School, Trevor Reid Munch , who filmed a documentary about Avalon Park Preserve, and Justin Joseph Russo, who installed a gazebo at the Russian Orthodox Church in Setauket. “The young people in our communities are the future of America,” commented Councilwoman Cartright. “When I look at these young men and all of the hard work they’ve done, I know that future is a bright one.”

St. Joseph’s College is pleased to welcome Jack P. Calareso, Ph.D. as its seventh president. Dr. Calareso has replaced SJC’s retiring President S. Elizabeth A. Hill, who served as its leader for 17 years. Dr. Calareso will be the first non-religious leader of the College since its founding in 1916. “My primary responsibility is to do everything I can to support each and every member of the St. Joseph’s College
community,” said Dr. Calareso. “In the coming weeks, I hope to begin to share my ideas for the future. We are fortunate to have two dynamic campuses and my goal is to spend an equal number of days on each campus. I am very excited to serve as SJC’s new president.” Dr. Calareso served as president of Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass. since 2007. Prior to that, he served as the president of Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio, and Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa. Dr. Calareso has earned a national reputation for his knowledge in liberal arts education, teaching and administration. He is also a renowned speaker at international, national, regional and local conferences and
workshops, as well as the author of numerous books and articles. A strong fundraiser, Dr. Calareso has successfully planned and led a number of major fundraising campaigns resulting in significant capital improvements, growth of endowments, scholarship programs, endowed chairs and special projects. Dr. Calareso received a Ph.D. from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. He earned a master’s degree from St. Bernard’s School of Theology in Rochester, N.Y., and an undergraduate degree from Boston College. Dr. Calareso and his wife, Rose, have three grown children and four grandchildren. The couple has relocated from Mass. and is currently residing in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Fully Accredited The Middle States Commission on Higher Education has notified Suffolk County Community College that the College remains fully accredited and has been taken off warning based upon the proof submitted by the College documenting full compliance with the Middle States’ requirements Suffolk was warned in 2012 that it had not produced evidence that it was in compliance with two of the Commission’s 14 accreditation standards: Standard 7 - Institutional Assessment and Standard 14 Assessment of Student Learning, and was also asked for more information about two other standards involving budgeting and resource allocation. The College submitted a monitoring report and
was visited by a small team of reviewers from the Commission in October 2013. The Commission team was satisfied with the information provided concerning budgeting. “We appreciate the diligence of the Commission’s team,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, “and we will continue to document the College’s assessment processes, the advancement of student learning and the effectiveness of our Comprehensive Assessment Plan for Institutional Effectiveness in order to meet the expectations of our accrediting body.” “Our College undertook a tremendous effort to implement a Comprehensive Assessment Plan for
Institutional Effectiveness, including performing assessment activities in every academic program and in the administrative and educational support units at the College,” said Dr. McKay. After reviewing all evidence and meeting with faculty, administration, and the College’s Board of Trustees, the Commission team found the College in full compliance with all 14 Middle States standards. The team made a recommendation to the Commission to remove the College’s accreditation warning status at its June 2014 meeting and to reaffirm that Suffolk County Community College is and remains fully accredited. The Commission also informed the College that its next self-study and on-site evaluation is scheduled for 2017-2018.

This was once a summer town where streets could wind unpaved, unbound by keep off signs and plush sod strips and paths were laid by barefoot trips to splintered piers as rusting traps awaited blue claws’ August laps; while boats moored fast to marshes’ edge would lie in wait concealed in sedge for ducks to sail their V shaped wedge; where clammers toiled, each rake applied knee deep to race an ebbing tide; while baited lines on a silt-soft shore reels spinning fast were cast once more; where shacks leaned south to taste the bay, shingles bleaching brown to gray; and boat yards hugged each sheltered lee when gales pruned clean each proud elm tree. This was once a summer town; few streets remain unpaved, unbound.

From The Author: This poem received an award in 2013 from the North Shore Alliance contest. It speaks of the Seaford we recall when we first moved here in 1963. The boatyard is long gone. I wrote it in the Seventies waiting for my son to return from a fishing trip.
