Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events. Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. In March of 2020, when the pandemic really started to hit hard, Rhonda, along with the assistance of her board members, united to find solutions for the community despite what was going on. Rhonda believed that even though EFF programs may be on hold, that did not mean the people of the community did not still need answers and help. She has worked endless hours for the sake of the families that need assistance and need a voice. Since the pandemic Rhonda has either spearheaded or collaborated in many projects to help our community out. Here is an example of just a few: The Grab & Go 3,000 Event in Patchogue: Rhonda collaborated with business owner of local restaurant to provide over 3,000 hot meals to families in need. Grab & Go Breakfast in Rocky Point: EFF collaborated with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry of Strathmore bagels and a few

sponsors, to give-away over 300 breakfasts to families in need. 6 Week Marathon: March 29th was the beginning of a 6 week marathon of assisting front line workers with food. EFF and Rhonda did a Go Fund Me with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry to supply St. Charles, Mather and Stony Brook Hospital food every night. PPE Equipment Fundraiser: EFF collaborated with several Allstate Insurance offices to raise funds for PPE equipment. Over 2,000 masks were delivered to various hospitals, senior centers, nursing homes and fire districts. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. Miriam H. says, “Rhonda is a true professional that looks out for the best interest of her clients. She works hard at finding the best solutions and making her clients shine. Ward Melville Student Places Second In Environmental Contest
Ward Melville High School rising senior Kaitlyn Ehlers placed second in the 2019-2020 SOLUTION4POLLUTION competition supported by the New York State Sea Grant and sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. The competition called for high school students to submit concepts for

reducing trash in the nation’s waterways and beaches, in particular the Long Island Sound and associated harbors. The goal was to create cost-effective methods to return waterways to a trash free sea. As a secondplace winner, Kaitlyn was presented with a $300 reward.
Rocky Point Third Grader Honored For Altruism
COMMUNITY SUPPORT - The Rocky Point Rotary Club has ramped up their community support during the pandemic. With both local families and businesses struggling, the club instituted two separate programs. Each week they purchase $250 worth of gift certificates that are delivered to a local outreach agency for distribution. Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School third grade student Lilianna Bonacasa was honored by the Promise of Hope organization at their third annual gala on June 20. Lily was honored for her work in the community centered around “Lily’s Toy House,” a toy drive that she founded in memory of her
father who was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan. “She is a remarkable young lady,” said her teacher Rebecca Pagnotta, who visited Lily at home before she attended the live virtual gala with her mother. Lily had an opportunity to speak at the event and shared the inspiration of her work and
words of encouragement for others in how good deeds can make a positive difference in their lives. The organization presented Lily with a violin, music lessons, a trip to Hawaii to visit relatives and $30,000 that was raised that night to assist Lily’s Toy House this upcoming holiday season.

Legislator Anker Distributes Face Coverings to Senior Residents
On Monday, June 22nd, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker, Chairwoman of the Seniors and Human Services Legislative Committee, distributed face coverings to senior residents at the community of The Ranches in Mount Sinai. “Senior citizens are more susceptible to
COVID-19 and as chair of the county’s senior committee, I have made it my priority to provide our senior residents with face coverings that have been made available in coordination with our federal, state, and county governments. As we continue to see improvements in
overcoming the COVID-19 virus in Suffolk County, I commend our essential workers, volunteers and residents in their efforts to reduce the virus,” said Legislator Anker. The county encourages residents to call 311 if they have questions related to the COVID-19 virus.

Legislator Anker Honors Veteran Deborah Bonacasa On Friday, June 12th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker recognized Deborah Bonacasa as this year’s Suffolk County Women Veterans Appreciation Day 6th District Honoree. Deborah Bonacasa is an Air Force veteran who served from 2002-2006. As a Senior Airman working as an Information Manager, she was exposed to a multitude of environments and worked alongside many great service men and women from all walks of life, cultures, and military branches. She had been stationed in Hill Air Force Base in Utah, as well as deployed to Balad Air Base in Iraq in 2005. She met her husband, Sgt. Louis Bonacasa, in basic training, and was simultaneously deployed to Qatar. Sgt. Bonacasa of the New York Air National Guard’s 105th Base Defense Squadron died in active duty in Afghanistan in 2015. “It has been one of the most
DEBORAH BONACASA challenging yet rewarding careers I have had the privilege to experience,” said Deborah Bonacasa. “Being a part of a greater mission is something I will value and carry with me throughout the rest of my life, and having the opportunity to do it alongside my husband has been my greatest honor.” Deborah Bonacasa was recognized as part of the first annual Suffolk County Women
Veterans Appreciation Day celebration. Women Veterans Appreciation Day was established through legislation to recognize women who proudly serve in the United States Armed Forces. In addition to her service, Deborah has worked with a number of organizations including Gold Star Families, Tunnels to Towers, local food pantries, VFWs, fire departments, and civic organizations. Gardner Receives a Lifetime Achievement Award for Vaccinology and Immunology Pierce Gardner, MD, Professor Emeritus at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, is the recipient of the 2020 Dr. Charles Mérieux Award for Achievement in Vaccinology and Immunology from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID). The award honors individuals whose outstanding lifetime contributions and achievements in the fight against vaccinepreventable diseases have led to significant improvement in public health. Dr. Gardner’s career has centered on global health policy and training the next generation of public health providers to

tackle health issues in low-resource countries. He has done extensive international work and has been a consultant for the World Health
Organization, the Centers for Disease Control, and the Armed Forces Epidemiological Board (now the Defense Health Board). He served in many educational roles while at the Renaissance School of Medicine and remains instrumental in fostering students’ global health interests related to their career paths. Previous recipients of this national award include luminaries in infectious diseases such as D.A. Henderson (who wiped out smallpox), Arnold Monto (a pioneer in influenza vaccine), and Kristin Nichol (a pioneer in pneumococcal vaccination). Paws Of War Desperate For Funds To Help American Soldiers Bring Harley Home
Syria is not a safe place for the American soldiers who are stationed there, but it’s even more dangerous for a dog. American troops have adopted a stray dog named Harley, raising her to be an important part of their team, and they refuse to leave her behind. Leaving her in Syria would be disastrous, so Paws of War is on a mission to help bring the dog back to the states, where she can live out her days in peace with “AJ.” “When these guys befriend a dog in a war zone it’s often what helps them get through each day,” explains Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. “They absolutely know they can’t leave Harley behind, so we agreed to work together with them and other contacts we have in that are in a team effort to bring her back to America. But we can’t do it without the help of the public, because we need donations to pull this off.” The troops were out on a mission when they heard a puppy crying. When they investigated, they found six puppies, but only one that
was still alive. The others likely died of starvation or dehydration, and nobody knows what happened to their mother. They couldn’t leave the puppy behind, so they took her with them. The soldiers named her Harley and cared for the dog, getting her what she needed to thrive and grow. She’s now become an important part of their day, bringing love to their life and making everyone smile. Her presence has made them all feel like they have a little bit of home with them. Now that “AJ”, who’s name cannot be released due to security reasons, will be heading back to the United States, the troop is on board with having Harley go with him. They have reached out to Paws of War to help make it happen. “These soldiers know how dangerous it would be to leave their furry family member there in Syria,” added Misseri. “We will make every effort to bring Harley to America so she can live out her life here. The soldiers believe they

The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. (EOC of Suffolk) has received $1.7 million in federal funds to provide financial assistance to individuals and families facing economic hardships arising from COVID-19related disruptions. The funds are being made available to eligible Suffolk County residents
who have either lost their jobs, became temporarily unemployed, or faced financial difficulties because of the pandemic. The funds originate from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act – commonly known as the CARES Act – which is providing $41 billion in funding to supplement the nationwide
Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program. Signed into law on March 27, the relief program aims to address the consequences of increased unemployment and economic disruption resulting from the COVID-19 virus. “The Coronavirus pandemic has triggered the most damaging economic crisis America has faced

Jefferson’s Ferry, a not-for-profit Life Plan Community, recently developed two scholarship programs to Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) nursing programs. One $2,000 scholarship will be offered to a high school senior; another $2,000 scholarship is available to eligible Jefferson’s Ferry employees and their dependent children.
