On Monday, July 13th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center Inc. (ADRC) will host its 5th Annual Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club, located at 483 West Main Street in Huntington. Those wishing to participate in the Golf Classic can register online at www.adrcinc. org/campaigns. Teams will consist of four individuals, with a payment of $500 per player. If you are registering as a single player, you will be matched up with a foursome. For those who will only attend the dinner, the price is $175. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. on the day of the event, followed by brunch at 10 a.m. At noon, there will be a barbeque lunch and shotgun start. The

Don’t Forget the Flats By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Expanding upon my adventuring-into-NYC theme from last week, clearly, I prefer to get around on foot. Sure, weather can be a factor, or time, but as long as it’s somewhat feasible, walking the city streets can be one of the more enjoyable aspects of exploring Manhattan. Assuming, that is, you have the proper footwear. Do I speak from personal experience? Why, of course I do. This past autumn, my friend and I – both former dancers – decided to buy tickets to the NYC Ballet. It would be our very first time seeing such a professional-scale performance; plus it was a great excuse to spend the day roaming the city. We (somewhat) mapped out our excursions, deciding we would walk from Penn Station all the way up to Lincoln Center, meandering off-route periodically. The day was unseasonably
warm for late September (like, approaching 90º warm), but we forged ahead with our plan to brave the elements. The main stop I wanted to make was to Central Park, in the vicinity of Strawberry Fields. For those unfamiliar, that’s a solid 35 blocks. Not a problem, at first. The issue, one that we had failed to appropriately navigate, was getting through the park without traveling, oh, about 27 miles out of the way. That was the moment when my decision to wear heels really kicked in as the wrong choice. Pavement was one thing; rolling hills and dirt paths quite another. Let’s just sum up the experience by stating that, after wandering aimlessly for hours, stopping to rest at literally every single park bench we passed, I was in dire need of a shoe substitute. With our show at Lincoln Center fast approaching, we desperately scanned the stores as we made our way south.
Finally, I spotted a Duane Reade. They sell flip-flops, don’t they? Well, yes, they do. However, unless you have size 11 feet, they won’t do you much good. Desperately, I searched the racks for something, anything else that would fulfill my purpose – which, at this point, was not being forced to walk barefoot down the city sidewalks. Just when I had given up hope, there they were – a pair of size 9 (I’m a size 7) ballet slipper flats. Sold. And so off we went to Lincoln Center, shoes in hand. Classy. I found myself reflecting upon this fond memory as I prepared for yet another city trip, to yet another ballet performance at Lincoln Center, with the same friend, over the Fourth of July weekend. Plans were mapped out accordingly, including a detour into Central Park. To be continued…

Memorable Graduation Not even a little rain could dampen the spirit of the community as Ward Melville High School’s Class 2015 marked an educational milestone on June 28th and officially became the latest alumni in the Three Village Central School District. The ceremony was filled with congratulatory remarks from members of the student body,
including Valedictorian Eric Wang, Salutatorian Jayne Green, and Student Government President George Zenzerovich, as well as Principal Dr. Alan Baum and Board of Education Present William F. Connors. As a lasting mark on the school that houses many of the students’ memories, the Class of 2015 left their soon-to-be alma mater
with the gift of a set of a new banners to decorate the campus and serve as a symbol of Patriot Pride. Before graduation caps flew high into the air, Sophie Hintze led her peers in the traditional turning of the tassels and Dr. Baum presented the graduates to resounding applause from the audience.
Moving on Up Sunshine blanketed the front lawn of P.J. Gelinas Junior High School as the building’s ninth-grade class took part in the school’s first ever outdoor moving-up ceremony this June. Surrounded by proud parents, family members and educators the students began the ceremony with a processional to take their seats of prominence as the Gelinas brass choir trumpeted a melodic tune. Administrators
in attendance praised the soon-to-be high school students for their dedication, determination and scholastic aptitude before reassuring them that they were well prepared for the road ahead. Principal William Bernhard listed many of the accolades the class has collectively achieved during their time at Gelinas and reminded them “anything is possible in your future if you really put your mind to it.” Memories of the
students’ time at Gelinas were punctuated through two students addresses, delivered by Matthew Grillo and Michael Giaquinto, as well as musical performances by Julia Pollina, Julia Campanella and the ninthgrade chamber choir. As their names rang in the warm summer air, the students walked to the dais to receive their official moving-up certificates and officially “move up” to Ward Melville High School.

Stepping Up to Seventh The Three Village Central School District marked a milestone in the lives of the elementary schools’ sixth-grade class as they advanced in their academic journey and prepared to move up to the district’s junior high schools this the fall. During the schools’ commemorative moving up ceremonies, students reflected upon their years
in each building while faculty and staff members presented awards honoring individual scholars academic, athletic and community-minded achievements. Melodic interludes at each ceremony showcased the students’ myriad of musical talents and left audiences with fond memories. Just before the

conclusion of each ceremony, the schools’ graduating classes were announced to roars of cheers and rounds of loud applause from the audience. As the students left their schools on this special day filled with an array of emotions, one thing was evident – they were well prepared for life’s adventures ahead.
As the warmer weather arrived, the campuses of the Rocky Point School District received a visit from several unwelcome guests: bees and yellow jackets. up with district officials to combat the issue. The troop first brainstormed ways to reduce the appearance of these pesky creatures and created informational letters and posters to detail their suggestions. They then met with the district’s Health and Safety Committee to discuss the feasibility of the solutions. The district recently

When Kyle and Samantha’s mom saw the delivery from Friends of Karen, she was elated. Inside were the much needed supplies for her children to begin a successful school year. It was a relief for the family of five, whose other sibling, Erin, was diagnosed with Leukemia at age seven. “The last thing on my priority list, unfortunately, was getting the kids off to school with their necessary items. Masters Of Math W.S. Mount Elementary School’s “Mount Math Masters” teams captured first and second place at the Suffolk County Math Tournament at Stony Brook University. Additionally the students received 10 individual trophies for earning top 10 honors at the contest.
The school was represented at the contest by two sixth-grade teams, which were comprised with a mix of sixth and fifth-grade students. They competed against a total of 52 teams, made up of more than 250 contestants, at the event. They prepared for
the event under the direction of Linda Earls by participating in the Math Olympiads, which are monthly challenges given around the country. For the first time this year, a Mount student - Alex Lin – received a perfect score in the Math Olympiad.
Mosaic Winners Erica Graci and Lucas Welinder, students at Port Jefferson Middle School, were selected to have their artwork displayed at Rocketship Park in the Village of Port Jefferson as part of a beautification
project fundraiser organized by the Village. As part of the fundraiser, the middle school purchased two tiles and held a school-wide contest calling for artwork to decorate the tiles. The
winning images submitted by Graci and Welinder will be screened onto the mosaic tiles and installed at the park once a renovation project gets underway.

Math Tournament A team of Port Jefferson Middle School sixth graders scored big at the Eighth Annual Suffolk County Elementary Math Tournament, held recently at Stony Brook University. The team placed tenth
out of 52 teams and team member Aaron Held placed fourth in the individual competition out of 260 students. To earn the recognitions, the students were required to answer challenging, math
olympiad-style problems in a timed tournament. “The kids had a blast competing and spending the day on a college campus,” said math teacher Megan Ryan.

Three Earl L. Vandermeulen High School varsity athletic teams were recently recognized with prestigious honors during end-of-the year sports dinners. The Port Jefferson school District extends its congratulations to the following teams: Lacrosse The varsity lacrosse team capped off their inaugural season with several awards at a recent awards ceremony. During the event, Connor Fitterrer, Brian Mark and Max Scandale were named as members to the League IV All-League team with Scandale also receiving recognition for making the All-County team. Mark was also named as the League IV Rookie of the Year. Senior Jake Myhre was recognized as being
the first recipient of the $1,000 “Stick With a Goal” scholarship, granted by the Port Jefferson Village Lacrosse Association. Myhre will be attending the University of Pittsburgh in the fall. As a team, the boys earned the Suffolk County Lacrosse Coaches Association Crosse Award, which recognizes teams who are most improved. “I couldn’t be more proud of what this team accomplished this past season,” said Head Coach Taylor Forstell. Baseball Seven varsity baseball players scored top honors at the Suffolk County AllLeague/All-County Dinner. They include All-League Players Noah Davis, James Murphy, Neil Alvarez, Ben Kluender, Matt Keresztes
and Sean Griffin; as well as All-Academic Player Tristin DeVincenzo. As a whole, the team reached the Suffolk County Class B Semifinals. Tennis Team At the Suffolk County Boys Tennis Awards Dinner, five senior varsity tennis players were recognized. Sascha Koller earned a top 16 in the county award; Paul Capobianco and Corey deGroot received an All-League Doubles recognition; Adam Nieves was awarded with an AllLeague Singles honor and Gaspar Cello received a Sportsmanship award. Additionally, Josh Gelfond, an eighth-grader, earned the #1 USTA boys 14-yearold player award and will be leading Port Jefferson’s tennis team next year.

Vandermeulen High School. During the event, the students received several special classroom recognitions and Presidential Awards for Academic Excellence,

Caring For Older Adults (NAPSI)—With a growing aging population, the amount of family caregivers in the United States is also on the rise. There are nearly 45 million people who serve as a caregiver for a family member or friend who is 50 or older. Serving as a caregiver can be rewarding but difficult. Often, caregivers are unaware of local aging resources that might be able to assist them. The Eldercare Locator is a free, public service that connects older adults and caregivers to information about local resources and
services such as meal delivery programs, transportation options, home modification assistance and inhome support services. Additionally, caregivers can find out about support groups in their community and programs that offer a break from caregiving responsibilities. The Eldercare Locator also has free informational brochures for older adults and caregivers on topics such as medication management, preventing falls in the home, transportation options, avoiding financial

(NAPSI)—The Internet makes it easy to shop for the best bargain on a used car—just remember, an offer that seems “too good to be true” probably is. It may come from someone known as a “curbstoner.” These are illegal dealers who pose as individual sellers online and mostly deal with cars that reputable dealers won’t touch. You may see cheap prices but the cars generally have
major problems you’re not told about, such as flood damage, bad accidents or odometer problems. Some may even have a different Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), a trick used by thieves to hide the true identity of stolen cars. Look for: 1. Strange marks or scratches on the dashboard VIN plate or sticker inside the driver’s side door. 2. Any car documents where the VIN looks
altered. 3. Multiple VINs on different pieces of paperwork. 4. The seller’s name not appearing on car title or registration. What to do: Shop online at a place like carfax. com.
