Rocky Point Students Raise Thousands For Madagascar Ankizy Fund Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School’s annual readathon to support the Madagascar Ankizy Fund took place recently, and the Rocky Point community contributed to its success. A total of $2,880 was raised – with a $600 donation from the Rocky Point High School math club and adviser Janece Alfredson. “We are so proud of our students,” fourth grade

teacher Allison Licata said of the funds that will help cover teacher salaries; training in basic health, hygiene and nutrition; maintenance of clean water wells and distribution of mosquito nets, among other expenses. Throughout the initiative, students were encouraged to secure sponsors to pledge funds for each page of a book read. This tradition began

more than 20 years ago and, since its inception, students have raised enough money to build a school in Madagascar. In 2008, The Rocky Point School was inaugurated. Founded in 1998 by paleontologist Dr. David Krause, the Madagascar Ankizy Fund’s mission is to provide education and health care to children living in remote areas of the island.

Port Jefferson Introduces Therapy Dog Pilot Program The Port Jefferson School District has initiated a pilot program with therapy dogs at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School. The purpose of the program is to investigate whether the district should permanently have certified

therapy dogs available throughout the school year. Families were notified of the visits in early March and were able to select whether their child would not participate in the visits due to allergies or

discomfort with animals. The visits are coordinated through the Long Island Chapter of Love on a Leash and take place outside with COVID-19 social distancing and mask protocols in place.

Preservation Long Island Announces 2021 List of Endangered Historic Places Preservation Long Island’s Endangered Historic Places List for 2021 includes seven sites and one district facing a variety of threats from demolition and overdevelopment, to a lack of municipal funding and support for historic preservation in communities throughout our region. Important historic places across Long Island are threatened by a variety of adverse conditions, from outright demolition to a lack of appreciation for their historic value, or the inability to develop sustainable longterm plans for preservation and stewardship. Preservation Long Island (formerly the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities), established the Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP) with the goal of raising region-wide support for historic places facing precarious circumstances. “The program offers Long Islanders an opportunity to advocate for preservation in their communities while learning how to use tools like landmark designation, tax incentives, and public outreach,” said Alexandra Wolfe, Preservation Long Island’s Executive Director. “Our program partners receive priority technical assistance from our professional staff and their listings are featured on our website and social media”. The pandemic did not have a negative impact on the public response to the open call for nominations issued last November. “This year marks the largest number of nominations received in a single program year since the establishment of the program in 2010,” said Sarah Kautz, Preservation Long Island’s Director of Preservation and Advocacy. A total of 18 nominations were submitted for the 2021 program year from communities across Long Island. A panel of Preservation Long Island staff and trustees, as well as experts in architecture, historic preservation, and other related fields selected the properties based on three key criteria: overall historic significance, severity of the threat and impact the EHPP listing will have on efforts to

protect the nominated site. Each of the eight sites will be showcased in a series of free virtual programs that will include interviews and panel discussions open to the public in June and July. John Mackay III’s “Happy House”, Village of East Hills, Nassau County. One of the few remaining Gilded Age country houses in East Hills Village is threatened by demolition and subdivision. Peter Crippen Home Site, Town of Huntington, Suffolk County. A rapidly deteriorating property owned by Huntington Town with strong ties to Long Island’s early colonial development and African American history. Pyrrhus Concer Home Site, Village of Southampton, Town of Southampton Community Preservation Fund. Purchased by Southampton Town in 2015, restoration of this nationally significant site of African American history in Southampton Village is threatened by inter-municipal delays and other issues. Rogers/Remz Grain & Feed Building, Port Jefferson Station, Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County. This early industrial farming structure at the heart of Port Jefferson Station is threatened by demolition and urban renewal. Sag Harbor Hills, Azurest, Ninevah, Subdivisions (SANS) Historic District, Village of Sag Harbor, Suffolk County. Demolition and intensive redevelopment threaten one of

Mt. Sinai High School defeated Manhasset High School 14-13 in a thrilling contest that was not decided until the final minute at the boy’s high school lacrosse Long Island Championship C level game on Saturday, June 19th at the East Islip School District Sports Complex. Junior attackman Joey Spallina led Mt. Sinai to victory by dominating play throughout the game. Spallina, who already has committed to Syracuse

University, captured the game’s James C. Metzger MVP Award. The award was presented by 1970s Long Island lacrosse star and local lacrosse benefactor James C. Metzger, who set assist records (82 in one season) and won many awards during his days at Half Hollow Hills East High School in Dix Hills, including All-American honors and the 1977 Lt. Ray Enners Award for outstanding Suffolk

County lacrosse player when he scored 102 points. Metzger played lacrosse for two years at Hofstra University. He is a member of the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame and the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame. He is the founder and CEO of The Whitmore Agency, a leading insurance services and estate planning company in the New York metropolitan area that is headquartered in Garden City.

Learning In Harmony: Summer Music Camp At Port Jefferson Many Port Jefferson students take advantage of the musical offerings to keep up their skills on their respective instruments at the Summer Music Camp at Port Jefferson. Registration for the 2021 season, organized by the Port Jefferson School District Music and Fine Arts Department is in progress. The camp provides an enjoyable and positive opportunity for

beginning and advanced students to enhance their musical studies while meeting new friends and playing music together and offers several levels of musical training classes, including beginning band and string. There are also more advanced classes for current elementary and middle school band and string instrumentalists. All classes will operate under current COVID-19 protocols and

procedures. The camp runs from July 12-22 with times varying depending on experience levels. The fee is $125 per class and a class bundle package of three classes can be purchased for $300. Blue Umbrella Experience (BUE) is a local nonprofit organization that offers a variety of interactive and engaging community classes for youth, young adults and individuals through their Above and Beyond Community Class initiative. Their goal is that students will enjoy learning while also connecting with others. The importance of community should never be overlooked, and Blue Umbrella Experience definitely understands that! The classes that this nonprofit offer either take place at their new location, which is 150 Motor Parkway, Suite 11, Hauppauge, NY 11788 or online! Some classes they offer are: Yoga, Martial Arts, Acting and Improv, Music Appreciation, Art, Digital Design and Technology, World Cultures, History of Walt Disney, Languages and Humanities, Personal Development, Finances and Math for everyday use, Communications, Animals & Nature and Cooking for all abilities and all levels. “We know we are our best selves when we have that safe space to feel accepted in, to help give us courage to try new things and practice using our voices to comfortably advocate for ourselves. We started our nonprofit Blue Umbrella Experience, Inc last June with the hope of thoughtfully and skillfully helping youth, young adults and individuals of all abilities to grow by learning, connecting and belonging during the pandemic and beyond,” says Executive Director Christine Hawkins. “We honestly could not bear the thought that individuals might otherwise face even more isolation, adversity and less options. We have been blessed with a team of instructors that have professional teaching experience in a Comprehensive

Transition Program and first and foremost, a love of supporting positive growth in their students; and so, through our Above and Beyond Community Class initiative, BUE’s community has grown to an incredible group of over 80 individuals from all over and ranging in age from 14 into their thirties.” Since September, this nonprofit has had 100% retention and everyday their BUE community continues to expand, while keeping their interactive classes small and personalized for optimum learning. To nurture the incredibly important sense of belonging, they also make sure they incorporate free lunch meetings, a weekly wrap up community meeting, as well as social events to integrate learning and help students nurture their bonds with each other. Students and professionals are always welcome to visit their new location to see what its all about! Additionally, if you are looking to get involved with BUE, they welcome professionals that have teaching experience and a lot of heart to reach out and propose classes that they can run that will support skillbuilding and increase quality of life for others. Protect Your Parks: 4 Ways To Keep Facilities Clean Parks have long been popular places to congregate. Facilities vary, but many parks offer various amenities — from walking or biking trails to dog runs to fitness areas. And while thousands of individuals and families visit parks each

year, when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in early 2020, parks provided an escape for those who were unable to gather at indoor recreational facilities. Even though parks offered safe places to have fun outdoors when other options were limited, the pandemic affected the way the parks were managed due to budget cuts and reduced staff. This, coupled with a surge in visitors that continues today, only underscores the importance of all outdoor enthusiasts doing what they can to keep parks clean. The following are four effective strategies for individuals to keep parks clean. 1. Leave no trace According to National Geographic, Leave No Trace is a set of environmental ethics for interacting with the great outdoors. It follows guidelines for using parks in thoughtful, sustainable ways. In addition to carry in/carry out

policies for belongings and trash, Leave No Trace components involve making an effort not to disturb and plants and animals, hiking in appropriate areas, and using care when camping. More information about the Leave No Trace movement is available at https://lnt.org. 2. Manage pet waste The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, in the United States, pet dogs produce more than eight billion pounds of feces each year, which equates to three-quarters of a pound per dog every day. Dog waste can contain bacteria and even cryptosporidium, a parasite that infects humans. Even though animal waste is organic, leaving it alone instead of picking it up can lead to environmental issues, including negative effects on local water supplies. It also smells bad and attracts flies and vermin. It’s important

for park visitors to pick up after their companion animals. 3. Reduce waste It can take roughly 450 years for a plastic water bottle to biodegrade. Even if they finally break down, bottles made from polyethylene terephalate (PET) can leave toxins in the soil and threaten fresh water. Use a reusable bottle instead of a single-use alternative when visiting the park. If plastic bottles must be used, be sure to place them in recycling containers around the park. 4. Volunteer Individuals can volunteer to pick up trash at their local parks. Various conservation groups and organizations organize trash pick-up events each year. Increased usage of parks means the potential for more trash and damage. Everyone can do his or her part to keep parks clean and enjoyable.

Student Honored With Music Scholarship The Port Jefferson School District is pleased to recognize student Andi Kelly as a recipient of a Long Island String Festival Association scholarship.

Andi, an eighth grade student-violinist at Port Jefferson Middle School, was named a LISFA 2021 Summer Music Program Scholarship winner. Andi

With many dressed in college gear and some wearing Rocky Point Eagles apparel, members of the Rocky Point High School Class of 2021 took a senior walk to where it all started

for many of them – Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School. Greeted with handmade, colorful posters and bubbles blowing in the air, the younger students high-fived and hugged

older siblings, cousins and neighbors, while elementary educators and staff members cheered and clapped to celebrate the senior class of Rocky Point High School.

Making History With The Seal Of Biliteracy

For the first time, two Ward Melville High School seniors – Victor Lançon and Steve Budnick – have earned the Seal of Biliteracy, an award presented by New York State in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages. The New York State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in one or more languages, in addition to English.

The intent of the NYSSB is to encourage the study of languages, to identify high school graduates with language and biliteracy skills for employers, to provide universities with additional information about applicants seeking admission and placement, to prepare students with 21st century skills, to recognize the value of world, classical and home language instruction in schools, and to affirm the value of diversity in a multilingual society. The students are required to create a

culminating portfolio project which revolves around a central theme of the student’s choosing. The students researched the theme using various resources, such as texts, podcasts, interviews and other digital sources, recorded in-person conversations, and wrote reflections so as to develop the theme into a more specific, delineated thematic statement. The students presented it to the Three Village Central School District Seal of Biliteracy Committee.

The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based

program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without

Career Milestone For Two Port Jefferson Educators

The Port Jefferson School District Board of Education granted tenure to two staff members during the last board meeting of the 202021 school year. Nicole Sklar, teacher

of special education, and Elizabeth Cavanagh, teaching assistant, were named by Executive Director of Human Resources Isha Morgenstern, to the applause of family members,

colleagues and community members. Ms. Sklar teaches at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School and Ms. Cavanagh works with students in Port Jefferson Middle School.

Benefits Of Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received

surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

visitors,” said Lois Reboli, a founder of The Reboli Center. “The artistry and functionality of his models are amazing,” Reboli added. Marshall founded CMA Models in 1982 with the goal of providing serious collectors a combination of services at one venue.

He offers the finest detailed custom built-to-order models in various scales, which he personally builds or are built by another highly trained craftsmen under his direction. CMA Models produces its own line of extremely limited edition of hand built model cars and kits. Marshall represents other similar artisans and
