The Educational and Cultural Center & the Legacy of Music in Stony Brook Village Opened in 2002, the Educational and Cultural Center (ECC) is an 8,800 square foot, two-story, colonial style building. The space where the ECC is located was once the site of the famed Dogwood Hollow built by businessman and philanthropist Ward Melville in honor of his mother Jennie Melville. We are planning a grand opening in November.” There will be a permanent “Hall of Fame” with plaques and exhibits recognizing the over 100 and growing inductees, as well as areas for a library, classrooms for educational programs and master classes, and a theater. “Our organization has grown and our wish has always been to have a physical facility to showcase our mission of celebrating Long Island’s musical history and supporting education,” LIMEHOF Co-founder Norm Prusslin added. “We can now achieve our dream.” The main exhibit space will contain a rotating exhibit theme, and the layout and first exhibit, “Long Island’s Legendary Club Scene: 1960’s-1980’s” is currently being designed by world-renowned visual designer Kevin O’Callaghan.

a significant coastline, a rich maritime heritage and growing opportunities to view ocean wildlife from the shores and in the water.” At a June 6 event in New York City, Mission Blue and its founder, the internationally renowned marine biologist Sylvia Earle, officially named Shinnecock Bay as a Hope Spot. Pikitch, on behalf of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science, nominated the bay for this global recognition and Ted Janulis, on behalf of The Explorers Club, served as second nominator. The official naming took place at The Explorers Club and acknowledged the work of Pikitch and her colleagues at Stony Brook University’s SoMAS, where a team of scientists, educators and students worked together to revive the health, biodiversity, and aquaculture potential of Shinnecock Bay. “The Hope Spot distinction for this unique bay on Long Island is the result of meticulous work and proof that the Shinnecock Bay Restoration Program has succeeded in bringing the bay back to the healthier state it was in many decades ago,” says Pikitch, the Endowed Professor of Ocean Conservation
NEW GLOBAL “HOPE SPOT” - Shinnecock Bay on Long Island’s south shore has been named a global Hope Spot after successful restoration efforts over the past decade and its healthy and diverse natural conditions and wildlife. Science at Stony Brook University and SoMAS, and Director of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science. “Shinnecock Bay is arguably the healthiest bay in New York State, and our work demonstrates that people can reverse the damage done through nature based, scientifically guided restoration,” she continued. “We hope and expect that designation of Shinnecock Bay as a Hope Spot will inspire others to take action to restore other
places to their original beauty, biodiversity, and health.” Shinnecock Bay is a highly productive estuary that is approximately 122 kilometers from New York City. The bay is a hidden gem of biodiversity that covers an area of 40 square kilometers and consists of 9,000 acres of open water, salt marshes, intertidal flats, and seagrass beds. These habitats serve as important nursery, feeding, and breeding grounds for many species.
Additionally, the Shinnecock Bay area and surrounding lands has a long history to the Shinnecock Nation, whose reservation is located on the far eastern part of the bay. Leaders of the Shinnecock Nation have endorsed the designation of Shinnecock Bay as a Hope Spot. The creation of “hard clam sanctuaries” in western Shinnecock Bay is a pivotal part of the restoration effort of the SoMAS Stony Brook
University team. As a result of this work the dangerous brown and red tides that had been occurring annually have not been observed for several years. Landings of hard clams outside the sanctuaries have increased dramatically and are at a level not seen since the mid-1980’s. And, numbers of fish in the bay, most notably forage fishes such as bay anchovy and menhaden, have escalated.

Shinnecock Bay on the south shore of Long Island, New York, is being named a new “Hope Spot” by Mission Blue, an international organization that supports the protection of oceans worldwide. This distinction is the result of a decade of restorative and scientific work co-led by Ellen Pikitch, Ph.D., Christopher Gobler, Ph.D. and Bradley Peterson, Ph.D. in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook University. Hope Spots are iconic ocean regions that stand out as some of the most pristine on the globe. This places Shinnecock Bay in a league with internationally-recognized locations such as The Galapagos Islands, the Sargasso Sea, and the Ross Sea in Antarctica. Recycling Is Good For The Economy HELPSY Stands Out in Job Creation!
The statistics are in… recycling is not only good for the environment, but also for the economy. And a standout economic success story in recycling is HELPSY! The environmental benefits of recycling are well documented and by themselves warrant a more sustainable lifestyle. With information gathered by the Recycling Economic Information Project (REI), an organization created in 2001 to encourage the development of an economic market for recycling and supported by the EPA, it is proven beyond a doubt that recycling not only conserves natural resources but recycling also strengthens our economy by creating jobs, wages and creating tax revenue. A 2020 REI report showed the recycling industry (including glass, paper,
plastics, rubber, electronics, organic and construction and demolition materials) across the board created 681,000 jobs, $37.8 billion in wages, and $5.5 billion in tax revenue. Furthermore, on average… 1.17 jobs were created for every 1000 tons of recycled materials. Rising above the rest by comparison, with 270 employees, HELPSY is the largest clothing collection company on the East Coast and collects 15,000 tons of textiles every year… amounting to 18 jobs for every 1000 tons. “HELPSY’s environmental mission is to radically change the way people think about clothing reuse and recycling. In the process of serving this mission, it has created hundreds of living wage jobs, saved municipalities millions of dollars in disposal fees, and has reduced the enormous
environmental burden of the second most polluting industry in the world,” says Dan Green, Co-Founder and CEO of HELPSY. Over the past year, HELPSY has worked with 113 municipal recycling departments and collected approximately 1.7 million pounds of textiles from those collaborations. Through a combination of clothing drives, home pick-ups, thrift store partners and clothing receptacles located in 10 states, HELPSY diverts nearly 30 million pounds of textiles from landfills every year. Considering those numbers, recycling clothes makes sense both environmentally and financially. Eastern Suffolk BOCES collaborates with Pal-OMine to provide students with alternative approaches for educational success. These organization’s use a comprehensive team approach and are seeking individuals for paid positions who have educational, mental health, speech and occupational therapy backgrounds, as well as those with Department of Corrections, Department of Probation, and State or
County Court experience. Volunteers, including retired first responders and veterans, are also sought. SUM Coverage If you have had your current Auto insurance for two or more years, you may not be aware of your allowable SUM coverage. Recently enacted state laws require insurance agents to explain to new customers, how much SUM they may purchase. If your SUM does not equal your Bodily Injury coverage, talk to a licensed agent.

Full coverage If your insurance agent ever told you, “Don’t worry. You have full coverage,” then it might be time to find a new agent. No two people will agree on what is meant by Full Coverage. Insurance is not a ‘one size fits all’ product. Insurance must be tailored to an individual, to their assets and to their risks. Similarly, insurance will not ‘fit’ for the entirety of one’s life any more than your waistline will remain constant from high school graduation until your own funeral. One must review coverage periodically. Question the professionalism of an insurance agent who writes the coverage you request. This is just the same as you should doubt a doctor who writes you a prescription because you want a particular drug. A professional, in either industry, will conduct a full exam to be certain that one is holistically prescribed the best drugs possible and is not threatened with unintended interactions. Lack of an appropriate financial, or physical exam, will render your ‘full coverage’ leaving you largely exposed.

To close out its Math Olympiad season, the Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School launched the first Virtual Suffolk County Math Tournament for fourth and fifth-grade students from schools across the county. Math Olympiad Coordinator Evan Curran, who teaches fourth grade at LADSBS, created and organized a challenging and engaging full day competition that included 30 teams made up of both group and individual participants. “The first county-wide virtual math tournament was a huge success and our students were outstanding with the effort and passion they displayed throughout the competition. I’m so happy with how it turned out and I appreciate every student who was involved out of a love for math and friendly competition,” said Mr. Curran.
Teams participated in the competition through Google Meet, where students could share their ideas with their teammates or meet teams from other schools as they took on various problem-solving activities throughout the day. Students representing LADSBS were chosen based on how they performed throughout the Math Olympiad season. Those who ranked among the top five in their grade level were the first invited to participate. Fourth grade competitors included Zoe Brown, Liam McGrath, Joey Poerio, Anna Thompson and Luke Vogt. Fifth-grade competitors included Madison Chacon, Emmanuel Dada, Kellen Davidson, Lexis Goldberg and Conrad Lindemann. Fifth grader Emmanuel Dada finished the individual competition in third place, with fellow fifth graders Kellen Davidson in fourth place and Lexis Goldberg in tenth place. “I want to congratulate everyone who competed from Miller Place and thank Mr. Curran for organizing such a phenomenal event. Huntington Folk Festival Set For July 16 At Heckscher Park The 16th annual Huntington Folk Festival is set for Saturday, July 16, at Heckscher Park, located off Main Street (Route 25A) and Prime Avenue, in Huntington, NY. Extending from 12 noon10 p.m., with a dinner break from 5-7:15 p.m., the free event is co-presented by the Huntington Arts Council, Folk Music Society of Huntington and AcousticMusicScene. com as part of the 57th Huntington Summer Arts Festival produced by the Town of Huntington. ‘An Evening with Paula Cole and Sophie B. Hawkins’ will be preceded by a series of amplified showcases and song swaps, along with a musical tribute to Lois Morton and an open mic, during the afternoon. Paula Cole is a Grammy
Award-winning singersongwriter best known for the 1990s radio hits “I Don’t Want to Wait” and “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone,” while Sophie B. Hawkins is celebrating the 30th anniversary of her breakthrough debut Tongues and Tails, which featured the hit song “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover.” Prior to the evening concert on the park’s [Harry] Chapin Rainbow Stage, Michael Kornfeld, president of the Folk Music Society of Huntington and editor & publisher of AcousticMusicScene.com (an online publication for the folk, roots and singersongwriter communities), conducts an on-stage conversational interview with the evening’s featured artists at 7:15 p.m. He also
hosts a series of amplified showcases and song swaps from 2-5 p.m. near a canopy tent on the upper lawn area overlooking the stage.
