We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more. It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling. Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides. Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person. There is something about inclement weather which
affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day. To everything, and everyone, there is a season. Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away. Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall
be doing the same. Such is the circle of life. Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises. There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon. So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings. Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul. It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. Embrace it. Happy Summer to all.

Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay. Suffolk County Community College athletics is number one in the country and has been recognized by The National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) with the group’s and prestigious NATYCAA Directors’ Cup. The NATYCAA Cup program began in 2004 to highlight excellence in two-year athletics based on success in championship competition. Awards are given to the NJCAA member colleges based on performance at national championship events throughout the academic year. Suffolk bested more than 200 college athletic programs nationally for the award in the nonscholarship Division III collegiate level. Suffolk County Community College also received national recognition from the National Association of College Director of Athletics for placing second in the country in the Learfield Director’s Cup standing that is composed of 538 Division I, Division II, and Division III two-year colleges. Moving Up to Middle School The future Port Jefferson Class of 2023, celebrated their moving up to middle school at a ceremony on June 22nd at the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School. During the event, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School fifth-grade students, received special classroom, safety patrol and principal recognitions, as well as certificates to signify their promotion to middle school.
“It has been a pleasure to watch you learn and grow,” Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert said. “I encourage you to take advantage of all the opportunities available in middle school and get involved in new things. It is by expanding your horizons that you will be able to discover what you want to do in the future.” Also speaking at the ceremony was parent Kristen Wennerod and
Principal Thomas Meehan. “I am very proud of you,” said Meehan. The ceremony also included the presentation of a class gift - a new welcome mat for the elementary school. The event culminated with the students singing, “We’re All in this Together” from “High School Musical” and had an ice cream social.

New Beginnings Ward Melville High School Class of 2016 received thunderous applause as they marched past proud parents, family members, friends and educators to the sounds of “Pomp and Circumstance” and took part in this year’s graduation ceremony. During the event, valedictorian Jeffrey Michel and salutatorian Ariel Long reflected upon their time
in the district and shared words of advice with their fellow graduates. Student Government President Joseph Hines presented the class gift – new picnic tables for the stadium – and senior David Fraas led the audience in a moving performance of “The StarSpangled Banner.” Both Principal Dr. Alan Baum and Board of Education President William F.
Connors Jr. delivered welcome addresses and encouraged the class to strive to reach their dreams. Each student was individually called to the dais to receive their diplomas before turning their graduation tassels in unison with the direction of Class of 2016 representative Amanda Franko.
Movin’ on Up Rocky Point Middle School celebrated the eighth-grade class during a moving up ceremony on June 23rd on the backfield of the school. With the help of eighthgrade choral members, the program commenced with the singing of “The Star Spangled Banner” and an address by eighthgrade speaker Alexander Samuilov, who shared a reflection on his time in middle school and the hopes he has for the class’s future. Principal Scott Dr. O’Brien also reflected on his work with the students,
as both their middle school and elementary principal. He encouraged them to always reach for their dreams and bestowed a few sage words of advice that had been submitted by the student’s parents. As a testament to their myriad of accomplishments, students were presented with more than 20 academic and character awards, including the New York State Comptroller’s Achievement Award, the Triple “C” Award, and the Presidential Outstanding Academic Achievement and Academic Excellence
awards as well as department and awards. Before each moving up candidate was presented with their official promotion certificates, the school honored a fourlegged member of the class – Eileen, a retired service dog who has been an integral member of the school’s doggy reading program. Over the past three years, select eighthgraders were invited to read aloud to Eileen in order to enhance their oral language skills, build reading confidence and fluency.

Retirement Celebration Legislator Tom Muratore recently attended an event in Riverhead to celebrate the retirement of Suffolk County Correction Officer Lieutenant Brian Baisley. A proclamation was presented to Lt. Baisley on behalf of Legislator Muratore and his colleague, Legislator Leslie Kennedy. Brian Baisley, a Wading River resident, joined the Sheriff’s Office in 1981. Throughout his career as a Suffolk County Correction Officer, he has achieved
many accomplishments. He was the first Correction Officer Investigator Sergeant that served as the Executive Officer and then the Commanding Officer of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Bureau (SCSO/IAB). As Commanding Officer of IAB, Brian oversaw, supervised and conducted hundreds of administrative investigations. Brian also proved his innovation and forward thinking by establishing an “Inmate Hotline,” as well as
incorporating various computer systems, equipment and training at the SCSO/IAB. “Brian Baisley’s hard work and innovation has left its benchmark on the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, and I’m sure he will be missed by many,” stated Legislator Muratore. “It was a pleasure recognizing him and saying “thanks” for his years of commitment to law enforcement. I wish him all the best in his retirement.”
Rocky Point Grads Rocky Point High School celebrated the Class of 2016 during a graduation ceremony under sunny skies on June 24th. Seniors Daniel Infranco, Breanna Garske, Thomas Loomis and Mary Rose Romano lead the audience in a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” before Daniel delivered his Exhortation speech. Additional student speakers included
valedictorian James Gohn and salutatorian Matthew Brewer, all of whom shared words of advice for their fellow graduates to embrace while working toward their personal and professional goals. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael F. Ring and Principal Susann Crossan also addressed the class and wished them well in their future endeavors. Each scholar was called
to the podium to receive his or her diploma from Board of Education President Susan Sullivan and the crowd applauded as the impressive list of scholarships awarded to the graduates were announced. The newest alumni then ceremonially turned their graduation tassels from one side of their caps to the other, officially marking the start of their next life journey.

Scholarship Honorees 50th ANNIVERSARY - At the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature on June 21st, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker honored the Harbormen Chorus for celebrating their 50th anniversary. The Harbormen Chorus is the North Brookhaven chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, a nationally recognized organization that promotes barbershop style and a Capella music. Fred Conway, Gary Wilson, Victor Fiorillo and David Lance accepted the proclamation on behalf of the whole chorus, as well as sang their renditions of the “Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.”

Residents of The Vincent Bove Health Center at Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community have been working diligently over the past six months to
raise funds to help outfit a house constructed for the widow and young daughter of Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Louis Bonacasa, who was killed by a Taliban suicide
attack in Afghanistan last December. The Bove Health Center residents, who are members of the Lots of Love Club, donated $400, which was used to purchase a washer

Lots of Love and dryer for the home. Rather than donate cash outright, the Lots of Love Club conducts fundraising activities. For this particular project, club members purchased
and bagged candy for Valentine’s Day, then sold the bags along with handmade chocolate lollipops and flower topped pens to Jefferson’s Ferry residents, staff and
visitors. Jefferson’s Ferry’s Lots of Love club traveled by bus to Sound Beach to be present at the dedication ceremony at the home.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory and his colleagues last week took a major step in their mission to build a stronger bridge between the business community and local government when they hosted “Charting the Course,” a free seminar for small business owners. The daylong seminar, held June 24th at Suffolk County Community College in Selden, drew more than 120 attendees who made business connections and were given an opportunity to speak directly with the people who can help their businesses grow and prosper. “One of the goals of the seminar was to help small business owners see local government not as an impediment, but as a partner in growth,” said Presiding Officer Gregory, who hosted the event. “In the Suffolk County Legislature, we want to work more closely with businesses to maximize private and public sector cooperation, ease some of the regulatory hurdles that new and existing businesses face, support strategic outreach and networking opportunities, and develop programs for worker training. This is how we will help give the next generation the ability to call Long Island home.” “Small business creation today drives future innovation and leads to long-term growth and sustainability,” added Suffolk County Legislator William J. Lindsay III, who represents the 8th Legislative District and chairs the legislature’s Economic Development Committee. He co-hosted the event with Presiding Officer Gregory. “However, for far too long, government red tape has
stood in the way of business development. Fortunately, we are starting to rethink how we do business here in Suffolk County. The partnerships created here today will help us develop more business friendly policies and make it easier for our residents to start a business and grow that business to unprecedented success.” The day began with a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Martin Cantor about how small businesses can benefit from key economic drivers like infrastructure, manufacturing and tourism, and what resources the government offers to help business owners drive their companies forward. “The most important aspect of the event was the need to bring awareness to our small businesses of the many opportunities which are available to assist them in being successful in Suffolk County,” said panelist Mitch Pally, CEO of the Long Island Builders Institute and the Suffolk County representative to the MTA Board. “Many government agencies, including the MTA/LIRR, have specific programs to provide procurement options for the goods and services which many small businesses provide. It is essential that our small businesses take advantage of these programs so that they can succeed and create new jobs in our community.” “I received a tremendous amount of feedback from those who attended ‘Charting the Course’ that emphasized the genuine desire and commitment that Long Islanders want to be part of a positive solution in how we approach the economic challenges facing our
region,” added panelist Anne Shybunko-Moore, president of GSE Dynamics Inc. and founder of the Manufacturing Consortium of Long Island. “People want to see progress and want to see positive change, and I am prepared to be part of the solution and strategy for Long Islanders.” Other panelists included Gina Coletti of the Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers; Jon Cooper, former legislator and president of Spectronics; and Joanne Minieri, commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning. Suffolk County Legislators Al Krupski and Kara Hahn and New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre joined them on the panel. “It is essential the business community and government communicate effectively so government understands the best way to help businesses thrive in Suffolk County,” said Legislator Krupski, who represents Suffolk’s North Fork. “I want to thank Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory for hosting this important event.” After the panel, nearly 20 other industry leaders facilitated small discussions during breakout sessions on building a pipeline for sales, workforce development, access to financing, and how government can help businesses navigate processes like securing permits and making business plans. “‘Charting the Course’ was a fantastic event that brought together so many experienced voices from the world of economic development,” said Suffolk County Legislature Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. “Suffolk County’s economy is
strong and growing thanks to public, private and nongovernmental partnerships. Thank you to Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory for hosting this event.” After the breakout sessions, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone spoke about his vision for Suffolk County’s economic future and praised its progress and potential before welcoming Frank Boulton, founder and CEO of the Long Island Ducks, who made a tremendous economic impact on the region since founding the baseball organization in Central Islip in 2000. “I’d like to thank Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory and Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay III for hosting this forum and engaging our small business community in a meaningful dialogue on how to grow the region’s economy,” said County Executive Bellone. “Suffolk is home to world-class assets that attract millions of visitors each year – including our world-class beaches, worldrenowned wine country, award-winning breweries and vibrant downtowns. We must continue to build upon our key assets in order to create an environment where businesses can thrive.” Attendees then enjoyed “A Taste of Suffolk,” a wide spread of samples from more than a dozen restaurants and food suppliers from across Suffolk County. The room was lined with culinary treats, including fresh strawberries from the Long Island Farm Bureau, East End wine from the Long Island Wine Council, and beer tastings from Blue Point Brewing Company. Other “A Taste of Suffolk” participants included Akropolis Greek Restaurant in Nesconset, Albert’s Mandarin Gourmet in Huntington, A Rise Above Bake Shop in Huntington, Bonappetito Pizzeria and Ristorante in Smithtown, Crepe Snacks, LLC in Lake Ronkonkoma, Del Fuego, Lucky Lou’s Gourmet Rice Pudding in Calverton, Mama Sbarro Pizzeria in Hauppauge, Ms. Michelle’s Urban Gourmet in Bayport, Panico’s Community Market in Smithtown, and Reinwald’s Bakery in Huntington.
Small business owners and advocates in attendance said they found the event to be a helpful stepping stone and a sign of increased collaboration between the business community and local government. “This well-attended, wellplanned event was a giant step for the many associations, chambers, political officials, civic associations and business groups to gather, exchange ideas and information, discuss future projects and obtain guidance on how to create more business locally,” said attendee Barbara Franco, executive director of the Smithtown Chamber of Commerce. “My appreciation to the committee for a very successful educational event,” said Elisabeth Zamarelli, Ph.D., of Stony Brook. “I left with a clear description and appraisal of the concerns of Suffolk County: education, using and keeping the many diverse talents of our youth, revitalizing our downtowns, implementing better infrastructure, the importance of manufacturing to our economy here in Suffolk, and how to maximize the appeal to keep our college graduates local while they earn quality jobs and appropriate living spaces. In all, the event was outstanding and the food, prepared and donated by local businesses, was second to none.” Many speakers commended venue host Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun McKay for guiding the college through an age where demands on students and workforce recruitment are changing. “Suffolk County Community College with the support of the presiding officer, the legislature and county executive, continues to foster longstanding strategic partnerships with Long Island’s small business and manufacturing communities by preparing students for the high-tech jobs being created as well as helping businesses stay competitive by training their incumbent workers,” said Dr. McKay.
