Polo Championship The United States Polo Association (USPA) has announced that the U.S. Open Arena Polo Championship will take place July 11th–22nd at the Country Farms Polo Club in Medford, New York. The 12-20-goal tournament serves as one of the highest levels of arena polo competition currently played in the United States. The tournament has a rich history dating back to 1926. In its inaugural year, it was won by the Yale University team made up of Reddington Barret, Winston Guest and William Muir. However, their champion status was quickly overtaken by Brooklyn Riding & Driving Club the following three years (1927-1929). Over the past 35 years, the tournament has been played alternately on the East Coast and West Coast at venues such as Shallowbrook Polo Club (New York), the Los Angeles Equestrian Center (California), Empire Polo Club (California), Great Meadow Polo Club

(Virginia), West Hills Polo Club (New York), California Polo Club (California), and most recently for the last five years, Country Farms Polo Club. In contemporary U.S. Open Arena polo competition, Cedar Croft Farms has garnered the prestigious title from 2013-2015, a significant feat, as only the second team in the history of the tournament to achieve three consecutive wins with the same team members. The young team consisted of Kris Kampsen, Team USPA member* Felipe Viana and Robert Ceparano. Last year NYC Polo including arena veteran Matias Magrini, Team USPA member Jared Sheldon* and Samuel Ramirez Jr. narrowly defeated Cedar Croft Farms in the final 17-15. “The USPA looks forward to this year’s tournament and hosting several teams that will represent the sport of polo to a wide audience on the USPA Polo Network,” said Duncan Huyler, USPA CEO. “We thank Country Farms for

their hospitality and efforts to host this historical tournament.” Polo fans are encouraged to attend this year’s games and cheer for their favorite team. Seven or more matches will take place regularly during the 11 days of the tournament. MATHCON FINALIST - At the June 15th Town Board Meeting, Councilwoman Jane Bonner honored Christopher Barton from North Country Road Middle School in Miller Place. The 5th grade student participated in the 2017 MathCon National Online Math Competition, an online math competition for students in grades 5-12 with grade-level specific timed tests of 45 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes. In the North East region, Christopher had the fifth highest score out of all 5th graders and highest score of any child who attends a public school. The four students that finished above him all attend a special STEM school in New York City.

With the sun shining brightly, Rocky Point Middle School eighthgrade students marched past proud parents, friends and district administrators to take their prominent seats across the back lawn of the school and signal the start of this year’s moving up ceremony. During the event, many students were individually recognized as

they were presented with departmental awards of recognition, state honors from the Comptroller’s and Attorney General’s offices as well as certificates acknowledging their outstanding character traits and community service efforts. Graduating eighthgrader Maya Menon was selected as this year’s moving up day speaker

and, in her address, shared memories from the students’ middle school years and a hope for a prosperous future. Before celebrating their accomplishments at the eighth-grade picnic and yearbook distribution ceremony, each student was called to the front of the podium to receive their official moving up day certificates.

Graduation Speeches Dressed in purple and white caps and gowns, the 97 students who make up the 2017 Earl L. Vandermeulen High School graduating class was presented with diplomas at the annual commencement ceremonies on June 23rd. In a unique presentation, valedictorian Chiara Rabeno and salutatorian Xinyi Hong shared the stage together and spoke in unison about the gifts and choices each of their peers possess. Their yin and yang address touched on the honesty of Xinyi

and the sentimentality of Chiara, winding up with the ultimate message of needing balance in order to achieve their full potential. During the commencement, speakers offered congratulations and words of wisdom. Among those addressing the students were Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Principal Christine Austen and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Casciano, in his first commencement address as the district’s leader. The ceremony featured several musical

performances by the school’s orchestra led by Dr. Michael Caravello; the presentation of the American flag by the Port Jefferson Fire Department; the presentation of the traditional class gift – a new water foundation installed for all students to enjoy; as well as motivational speeches peppered with anecdotes and advice by Student Organization President Rebecca Stafford and Elisa Scott, mother of graduate Charlie Scott, who gave the parent address.

As we set up our blanket and settled down to watch what remained of the show, there was one final burst of color in the sky. And then… silence. The end. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the first and last “real” fireworks show I have ever attended. A priceless memory nonetheless, one that is fondly reflected upon whenever the holiday nears. Here’s hoping everyone has a safe summer and enjoys whatever adventures it may bring. Just remember, you need not travel far to see beautiful sights… and make beautiful - if not brief - memories.

Of Summer Memories and Staycations Island Lighthouse, the Montauk Lighthouse or any number of tourist attractions in New York City, I always find a new angle to appreciate, a slightly different perspective to photograph. Of course, with a holiday such as the 4th of July, it’s always nice to view a few fireworks. With rare exception, this has generally meant sitting out on the deck in hopes that the neighbors had managed to obtain some sparkly explosives, or, if it wasn’t too crowded, taking a ride down to the local town beach to view the show from across the Bay. One year, a friend and I were inspired to check out the annual show at Eisenhower Park. After realizing that we should have probably allowed more time, resorting to parking on the side of Hempstead Turnpike and then wandering aimlessly around the park after having somehow missed the main entrance - we arrived. Or so we thought. We had literally walked into what was the staging setup for

Our little neck of the woods certainly has no shortage of pristine beaches, whether you prefer the smooth sand and surf of the south shore, or the seashell-encrusted terrain of the north shore. From the North Fork wineries, to the South Fork shopping hamlets, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy. Personally, I have always been a big fan of the “staycation.” Throw in a day trip to Manhattan or any of the boroughs, and you can literally travel from coast to coast over a four-day weekend and never run out of sights to see. No matter how many times I’ve visited the Fire

Teaming Up Peconic Bay Medical Center has once again joined forces with Project Fit America (PFA) to take their innovative fitness education program and expand it to several schools on the east end of Long Island including Cutchogue East Elementary, Greenport Elementary and Riverhead Charter School. Peconic Bay Medical Center originally spearheaded the entrance of Project Fit America in New York State when it brought the program to the Riverhead Central School District in 2013. The official expansion to the North Fork of Long Island recently took place during last week as trainers from Project Fit America appeared on site at the schools to showcase the program. Students demonstrated the fitness program to school visitors and dignitaries and, at both Cutchogue East Elementary and Greenport Elementary, the LI Ducks Mascot, QuackerJack, made a special appearance to assist the students with their program demonstrations. Project Fit America is a national charity which creates and donates innovative Fitness-in-Education programs to schools. The goal is to support sustainable opportunities for children to become active, fit and healthy. “When we introduced Project Fit America to our community, Riverhead became the first location in New York State to offer this innovative program.We are now excited to lead the expansion of Project Fit America to the North Fork of Long Island,” explains Andrew J. Mitchell, President and CEO of Peconic Bay Medical Center. “Project Fit America represents our

commitment to schools, children and their families to keep our community healthy. To Peconic Bay Medical Center, health care is more than just treating sickness; we want to provide our community the tools they need to stay fit and healthy,” Mitchell continued. The program includes the installation of an outdoor playground area of fitness stations, indoor equipment as well as teacher training and curriculum. The cost to

implement the program in the three schools was $75,000. Peconic Bay Medical Center led the capital campaign to raise funds with the support of GYMGUYZ East End, Lineagewear, North Fork Schools, Mattituck Lions Club, Kait’s Angels, JABS, Jason C. Leonard Inc., Barclays Bank, Capco, Sapient and Eastern Site Development. “When we were approached by Peconic Bay Medical Center to support this unique and exciting project, we knew immediately that

The BUDDY program matches children who have an incarcerated parent (or close relative) with an adult trained volunteer. The mentor meets with their mentee on a regular basis to provide guidance and support with the goal of building a trusting relationship. The BUDDY program has been in existed for seven years and is supported by fundraising efforts and grant foundations, Bank of America and The Richard and Mary Morrison Foundation. For 61 years, LICADD is Long Island’s premier nonprofit agency providing life-saving alcohol and drug prevention and intervention services

to at-risk children, individuals, and families across the region. With offices in Westbury and Holbrook, LICADD conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. The agency also conducts evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a BUDDY mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and public policy advocacy at the national, state and local level. and hosted a celebratory reception following the marathon. Day 4 was dedicated to United States Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jordan C. Haerter, in support of Team Jordan and the Fallen Heroes of the East End. It was titled “The East End’s Fallen Heroes Day / Team Jordan Day Sag Harbor / East Hampton.” The marathon took place from the South Ferry through North Haven,

Sag Harbor, to the East Hampton War Memorial and then back to Sag Harbor’s War Memorial. Runners also were taken to Jordan’s Memorial at the bridge, and to Jordan’s final resting place. Day 5 titled “Team Bones In Honor Of Louis Bonacasa And Miller Place Fallen Heroes Day” honored Air Force SSg Louis Bonacasa and the Fallen Warriors of Miller Place and Sound Beach.

Day 6 was “Brookhaven Fallen Heroes Day” and kicked off at the Suffolk Federal Sayville branch with a stop at Long Island MacArthur Airport to pay respects at the Fallen Warrior Memorial.
