Military members stationed in the Middle East are subjected to some brutal conditions, but every once in a while something happens that puts a smile on their face and brings them some comfort. That’s exactly what happened to two airmen, who within days of each other were brought together with puppies in need of rescue. They rescued the dogs and went on to create strong

bonds with them. Now, the Guardians of Rescue are working to help the airmen bring the dogs back home to America with them for good. “They have created inseparable bonds with these dogs and can’t imagine leaving them behind in the Middle East as they come back home to the states,” Robert Misseri, founder and president of Guardians of

July’s Charity of the Month:

Coastal Steward Long Island an understanding of the impact pollution has on our ocean and learn ways to have a positive impact on our marine environment.

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards.

As a non-profit that operates 100% by volunteers, Coastal Steward Long Island feels they can never have enough people to volunteer. If you would like to help keep our island home to some of the most beautiful and top-rated beaches in America, then consider volunteering with CSLI! They take volunteers to help with beach cleanups, planting oysters, collecting relevant data, maintaining tanks, releasing into the harbor and office work.

Lastly, they help restore by partnering with the Town of Brookhaven to run a restoration Throughout the month of July, I will program where they grow oysters present various ways that you can and seed local harbors. They help those at Coastal Steward Long strive to establish a self-sustaining Island to preserve, educate and population of oysters in Long take action! Island’s harbors.

CSLI helps educate others through their marine education program, which brings students to visit the Marine Environmental Stewardship Center at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. Students will gain hands on experiences so they can understand the local marine ecology. They help preserve by leading cleanups in local communities to prevent marine debris from contaminating our beaches and injuring local wildlife through preservation efforts. Through working with businesses, community groups, schools and local government, they bring volunteers out for a day on the beach, where they gain

Cartright joined in congratulating Three Village Chamber of Commerce Member of the Year, Jane Taylor, at the organization’s Annual Awards Dinner held at the Three Village Inn. The event celebrated the chamber’s successes and recognized their honoree, who is the Assistant Head of School at the Stony

Brook School. Also on hand was Three Village Chamber of Commerce president, Andy Polan. “For her dedication to the business and cultural community, her integrity and interpersonal skills, it is my pleasure to share in celebrating Jane’s recognition. Her skill and style has an effect on those around her. Her positive approach to the goals of this organization

Little Free Library On June 21st, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright joined residents and staff members of the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library for the reinstallation of their Little Free Library kiosk, located in the pavilion at West

Meadow Beach in Stony Brook. The Little Free Library, a charming handmade kiosk filled with books for borrowing, is back at its summer home. “This library is a wonderful annual addition

to West Meadow Beach. Many thanks to our student volunteers and dedicated staff of the library for providing residents with so many summer reading options across our community,” said Councilwoman Cartright.

On Saturday, July 14th, CSLI will be having a Shellfish Restoration Project at Cedar Beach in Mt. With coastal breezes, tons of sunshine and world-class beaches, Long Island is a wonderful place for beach-lovers to reside. However, we must remember to take care of our shoreline and preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Educational Journey Eighty-seven students from Edna Louise Spear Elementary School were celebrated for their advancement to Port Jefferson Middle School at the annual grade 5 moving up ceremony on June 20th. Members of the Class of 2025 were honored with achievement and classroom awards, safety patrol and principal recognitions, as well as certificates to signify their promotion to middle school. Deputy Superintendent Sean Leister, Assistant

Principal Claudia Smith, fifth-grade teachers and Pauline Spiller, mother of graduate Cristyn Spiller, addressed the students with words of congratulations and pride. Principal Thomas Meehan ended the ceremony with closing remarks that highlighted the students’ journey from pre-K through fifth grade. Too much applause and laughter, he quoted Ellen DeGeneres: “Follow your passion, stay true to yourself, never follow someone else’s path unless

you’re in the woods and you’re lost and you see a path — then, by all means, you should follow that.” The traditional class gift — a bench with the school logo for the courtyard at the elementary school — was presented by Caroline Orofino, mother of Angela Orofino, and Lisa Becherer, mother of Molly Becherer. The event culminated with the students singing “This Is Me,” the anthem from “The Greatest Showman” and an ice cream social for graduates and their guests.

Sharing Kindness As part of the fifth-grade social studies curriculum at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, students held a charity drive to help children in Haiti. Mrs. Kari Costanzo’s class conducted a schoolwide recycling effort to raise funds for food

and supplies for those in need. They also brought in clothing and shoes. Students learned that for just 10 cents, which is the recycling of two water bottles, a child can eat for a day in Haiti. One student remarked about how thankful she is when realizing how

different it is to live in Port Jefferson. “The students are proud of their accomplishments and understand how they can make a difference in other people’s lives with efforts of kindness and giving,” Costanzo said.

Jessica Schmettan, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, then presented congratulatory remarks and assisted Dr. Neidig with awarding diplomas. Schmettan offered words of encouragement to the

students and commended the school community, friends, classmates and family members for the structured village of support to help the students succeed in high school and beyond. “The independence and maturity that you have begun to develop in middle school will continue to shape you as young adults ready to take on the world,” she said to the graduates. “Your village will be there [to support you.]”

It was only days later when out on another mission that Fulmer found a litter of dying puppies that he tried to save. The survivor of that litter became his best friend, a beautiful

puppy he named Syri. Both puppies were lucky enough to be saved by these two heroic airmen. Over the months that followed, they created strong bonds with them. Both of them faced a big challenge, knowing that they would not be comfortable leaving the beloved dogs behind when they went back to America. That’s when Guardians of Rescue stepped in to help bring them back home,

as they have done for other military members. The lengthy mission of bringing them back to the U.S. was begun in the middle of the night by former military personnel. The dogs are currently being held in the country of Jordan, where there has been a holy war against dogs since October 2017, as they wait for their flight to the U.S.

The Heart of the Matter “I became a journalist to come as close as possible to the heart of the world.” ~ Henry Luce As I sit here at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon composing my thoughts for this column, one can’t help but reflect upon the latest in a long line of tragic shootings to touch the nation, this time at the headquarters of the Capital Gazette, an Annapolis newspaper founded in 1727. Among the five fatalities were veteran editors, writers and reporters, as well as a sales assistant to the staff. To think that a random act of violence on an otherwise average day could at once shatter so many lives is quite jarring. Of course, we as a society have become all too accustomed to dealing with tragedies of this sort; places that were once deemed to be “safe” can no longer be guaranteed so. Schools, churches, movie theaters . . . the list goes on and on. Year after year, these senseless acts have invaded our

societal comfort zone, making it increasingly difficult to look the other way. There is simply no rhyme or reason to the madness and where it may strike next. Of course, being of the journalism profession and working in an office much like the one brought to its knees last Thursday, this particular incident resonates on a slightly deeper level. The sentiment expressed by one Gazette reporter in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, “I can tell you this: we are putting out a damned newspaper tomorrow,” is one that rings true for nearly every publication through history that has been faced with a measure of adversity. From storms and natural disasters to power outages, union strikes and the like, journalism is one of the few industries that seldom “stops the presses” for any reason. Just a few years ago, many local community newspapers were faced with the prospect of not publishing in the

wake of Hurricane Sandy, as the majority of Long Island remained without power in the days and weeks following. But ultimately, the need to forge ahead, to provide readers with a lifeline to their surroundings, prevailed. As promised, the Capital Gazette came out with its Friday edition, the headline “5 Shot Dead at the Capital” splashed across the front cover. Simple. And yet so far from simple. Within the paper were written articles covering the attack and photos of the victims. But perhaps most poignant was the page normally reserved for opinions and editorials, which was left blank. In the white space were the words: Today, we are speechless. This page is intentionally left blank to commemorate the victims of Thursday’s shooting at our ofﬁce. What followed were the names of the five employees who were killed, one to a line. At the end of the day, there is really not much more to say.

Fifth Graders Celebrated In their last official act as elementary students, Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School fifthgrade students in the Rocky Point School District gathered together to celebrate their promotion to middle school during a special moving up ceremony. During the event,

the fifth-grade select chorus “High Notes” performed a selection of songs by Teresa Jennings conducted by studentmembers, individuals were recognized for their dedication to the school’s student council, technology club and two students were honored with the New

York State Comptroller’s Achievement Award and the New York State Office of the Attorney General Triple “C” Award. Each class was then classed to the front of the ceremony to receive their moving up certificates and celebrated by those in attendance.

Seniors All Smiles As the sounds of “Pomp and Circumstance” rang through the summer air, Rocky Point High School Class of 2018 proudly processed through the high school stadium on June 22nd to take their seats of distinction and signal the start of this year’s graduation ceremony. After four members of the class led the audience in a beautiful rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” this year’s exhortation speaker Jade Pinkenburg addressed the audience reminding his peers that “Together, we all forged the path that led to this moment and we have the knowledge and gained the skills throughout the process that will guide

us through all our future endeavors.” Principal Susann Crossan and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael F. Ring encouraged the students to always strive for greatness and that each are bound to amass many more achievements and accolades in the future as they work to change the world. Before the presentation of a myriad of departmental awards and special honors, salutatorian Kyle Markland delivered his address. “Everything is an opportunity to learn….as people we are shaped by our experiences. Nothing is a wasted experience if you are willing to learn from it. Life is a fantastic

teacher if you are receptive to what it has to offer.” In advance of the prestation of the class and awarding of diplomas and scholarship, valedictorian Connor Middleton implored his peers to “Defy expectations, deviate from norm and continue to distinguish yourselves. We are all individual tiles that comprise a brilliant mosaic, but the larger whole can’t exist without the unaltered eccentricities and singularities of each component.” Then, one by one, the students were called to the podium to receive their official diplomas and become the newest cohort of alumni.

Brookhaven Picnic On Friday, June 15th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Town of Brookhaven Annual Senior Citizen Picnic at Longwood Estate in Ridge. Every summer, the Town of Brookhaven Senior Citizens Division hosts this event to provide an opportunity for the local senior community to meet their elected officials.

Each year approximately 1,000 senior citizens attend this event, including those from more than twenty community senior groups. “My legislative district encompasses one of the largest senior citizens populations in Suffolk County,” said Legislator Anker, Chairwoman of the Seniors and Consumer Protection Committee. “I

will continue to work hard and advocate for services that benefit and improve the quality of life for our senior communities.” The Town of Brookhaven Senior Citizens Division provides a wide range of programs for the over 60,000 seniors who live in Brookhaven.

With the sun shining brightly, Rocky Point Middle School eighthgrade students marched past proud parents, friends and district administrators to take their prominent seats across the back lawn of the school and signal the start of this year’s moving up ceremony. During the event, many students were

individually recognized as they were presented with departmental awards of recognition, state honors from the comptroller’s and attorney general’s office as well as certificates acknowledging their outstanding character traits and community service efforts. Graduating eighthgrader Kaitlyn Reilly was

selected as this year’s moving up day speaker and, in her address, shared encouraging words about the Class of 2022’s collective future. Before celebrating their accomplishments at the eighth-grade picnic, each student was called to the front of the podium to receive their official moving up day certificates.

Blessing of the Fleet On Sunday, June 10th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined elected officials and yacht club members at the 15th annual Mount Sinai Yacht Club Blessing of the Fleet at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. During the parade of the fleet, the blessings were given by Father Francis Lasrado of Infant Jesus Church in Port Jefferson and Retired Reverend

Jermone Nedelka. In addition, the Coast Guard Auxillary was present to administer courtesty boat inspections. “Mount Sinai Yacht Club provides important oversight for Mount Sinai Harbor and have been good stewards for our environment,” said Legislator Anker. “I wish everyone a safe and fun boating season.” The Mount Sinai

Girl Scout Gold said Legislator Anker. “May they serve as role models and inspire others to also become civically engaged and community leaders.” Grace Burns of Troop 004 built amphitheaterstyle seating around the Little Free Library in Heritage Park to promote childhood reading. Julia Hecht of Troop 004 installed two hopscotch courts in the playground area of the park to promote children’s fitness. Nina Barcelon of Troop 491 created a pocket-size

booklet with translations of food allergens in six different languages as part of her “Safe Eating for Allergic Travelers project.” Brittany Becker of Troop 491 worked to collect over 85 Christmas tress by donation after the holidays and turned them into wood chips that she donated to a local park. Alexandra Suslan of Troop 491 helped create a sensory garden for people with developmental disabilites at the AHRC Wading River adult residence.

Moving Up to High School Surrounded by proud parents, family, friends and district staff, the ninth-grade classes at R.C. Murphy and P.J. Gelinas junior high schools recently marked a significant milestone and celebrated at their respective moving up ceremonies. Having amassed countless accolades during the past three years in junior high school, the students were celebrated not only for their academic

achievements but for the successes they reached beyond the traditional classroom. At Murphy, members of each academic department presented honored students with plaques and awards noting their exemplary achievements. Gelinas’ ceremony also highlighted individual awards — including celebrating two staff members for their more than 80 collective years of service to the school district

and one student who has maintained a perfect attendance record since kindergarten. Musical interludes were peppered throughout both ceremonies, highlighting the vocal talents of the soon to be 10th-graders before members of the administration called the “graduates” to the dais to receive their moving up certificates and, at Gelinas, a yellow rose in honor of a former member of the grade.

A blanket of proud family members, friends, and community residents blanketed the front lawn at Ward Melville High School to cheer and celebrate the Class of 2018 during this year’s commencement exercises on June 24th. Following a processional from the building to the sounds of “Pomp and Circumstance,” performed by the high school symphonic band, a number of speakers addressed the crowd. Salutatorian Michael Lu’s speech included reflections of the past, making note of the supports the students were provided along the way as well as words of encouragement that each

could achieve his/her goals as long as they were willing to take risks and possess an appetite to learn. Valedictorian Ethan Li noted the greatness of the class and how their path only goes up from here. Michael will be attending the University of Penn in the fall and Ethan is bound for Princeton University. As has become tradition, Student Government President Jillian Becker announced that the Class of 2018 would be gifting a set of picnic tables for outside the field house. Board of Education Vice President Irene Gische encouraged the students to always follow the dreams they have for themselves, aim high and

not let anything stand in their way, sentiments that were echoed by Principal Dr. Alan Baum, as he encouraged the students to embrace chance and to be involved, engaged forces of change in society. One by one, the graduates were then called to the dais to receive their diplomas before taking part in the symbolic turning of the tassels under the direction of Class of 2018 representative Liv Halvorsen. Under thunderous applause from the audience, the caps were tossed ceremonious into the summer sky and the latest Ward Melville alumni joined their families in moments of celebration.

Royal Sendoff Determination, motivation and persistence for success were the keywords of the day for the students of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Class of 2018 commencement exercises on June 22nd. The ceremony began with the processional and national anthem performed by the high school concert band under the direction of Christine Creighton and the traditional color guard presented by members of the Port Jefferson Fire Department. Board of Education President Kathleen Brennan, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Casciano and Principal Christine Austen offered encouraging words to the 89 graduates and as each name was called, their personal achievements and

post-graduation plans were recited by Austen as they walked to the podium for their diplomas. Billy Scannell, senior class president, and Ben Zaltsman, student organization president ,addressed their peers. Joseph Collins, father of twin graduates Joey Collins and Jack Collins, presented the parent speech – a heartfelt tribute to his family and the Port Jefferson school community, peppered with humor, wisdom and a nod to the excellence of education in the district. Ibuki Iwasaki, the class valedictorian, shared words of gratitude to her fellow graduates. “You have all played such an integral part in my life,” she said. “I am constantly amazed and inspired by

all the things you do and accomplish in academia, sports, arts and life.” She also thanked family, friends and teachers, for their contributions to the students’ education in Port Jefferson. Eli Doyle, the class salutatorian, reflected on the childhood physical games all the students participated in together – including the elementary school’s Scraggy 500, a relay race – which he said could be a metaphor for the challenges of managing the many responsibilities of life ahead. The festive ceremony ended with the release of a huge banner from the school’s rooftop created by retired art teacher Carrie Morgan to celebrate the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Class of 2018.

The collection on display, DISRUPTION, is a very special exhibition of artwork created by individuals with Autism and other Special Needs, participating in Fine Art and Art Therapy programs at FREE. More than simply interfering with a pattern that was already in existence, DISRUPTION challenged our artists to create a pattern, then

disrupt it and transform the old pattern into a brand new one. It looks different, feels different and is different. To be able to embrace this new pattern, old thinking and memories had to shift. What was old had to be let go of as our artists immersed themselves into the flowing river of creativity; where healing resides and has the power to rejuvenate and transform life. Throughout the seven months it took to complete the process,

weekly emotional and spiritual self-revelation spiraled our artists to ever mounting artistic heights allowing them to find their voices and “talk to us” through the mystical, hidden language of images and symbols. DISRUPTION consists of wide ranging depictions of differing natural frequencies of life. Whether it is an internal neurological pathway or a winding path through the forest, the patterns on the paper display the artist’s personal reflection of their

own connection to our worlds and the pathway to creativity. While the artwork is beautiful to look at it is important to recognize the depth of emotional release, intellectual learning and work skills development that took place over months of work with all our dedicated staff. It was their patience and unerring commitment to “stay the course” and believe that our artists could reach high to not only “see their healing image”, but also commit it

to permanent form for all to share in their vision. Much has been written about the healing power of Mindfulness Based Art Therapy and the creative process of spiritual selfexpression, especially for individuals who may find it difficult to express their thoughts and feelings through spoken words alone. The images on view are a testament to this healing power, as our artists faced the challenge to “break through” familiar modes of expression and embrace feelings of trust,

hope and peace, offering them an alternative to chaos, conflict and fear. This project in creativity has helped fortify the groundwork for our artists’ successful, ongoing contributions to our community through employment, volunteerism and cultural enhancement for us all. All are encouraged to view the works and perhaps purchase a piece. The proceeds of sales go towards supporting the artist and his/her program.

Employees Give Back Options for Community Living, Inc. (Options) has been an active partner with Long Island Volunteer Enterprise (LIVE) for more than 10 years. LIVE pairs Long Island corporate volunteers with not-forprofit organizations, encouraging companies to give back to their local communities. This year, for the first time, 31 employees from Smithtown-based nonprofit Options volunteered a total of 170 hours to help two

Long Island nonprofit agencies: The Book Fairies in Freeport, New York, and Long Island Against Domestic Violence. The Book Fairies is a notfor-profit organization that collects new and gently used reading material for people in need throughout metropolitan New York. Their mission is to foster literacy and academic success, provide a respite from personal struggles and nurture a love of reading across age groups.

Options’ employees spent the day sorting and packing books to be distributed to schools and community organizations in highpoverty locations. “They came to our warehouse with smiling faces, colorful tee-shirts and abundant enthusiasm to spend the day sorting thousands of donated books into appropriate categories for our up-coming free book fair for teachers. We wouldn’t have been prepared for the event

without their help,” said Rebecca Kennedy Lakhani, Book Fairies executive director! Options’ employees were happy to know that their work had made a difference. “I loved reading as a kid, so it feels good to have a small part in helping another kid perhaps learn to love reading too,” said Jessica Schwab, Options’ development assistant. Options’ employees also volunteered with Long Island Against Domestic

Violence (LIADV),which is committed to the empowerment of victims and survivors of domestic violence providing them with shelter and support and working with law enforcement and the community to prevent abuse. The Options’ group completed a spring cleanup project of gardening, painting and more! “We are so grateful for the volunteer efforts of the Options’ staff. Their dedicated efforts enhanced

the shelter making it a more welcoming environment for our residents. It looks beautiful,” said Ashley Huston, shelter director. “We understand firsthand how valuable volunteers are to a nonprofit agency,” said Yolanda RobanoGross, Options’ executive director. “So, it is especially gratifying to give back to two very deserving not-forprofits that do important work in the community.”

Art League Residency ideas and creative energy to bring to the inaugural group of Resident Artist Members. The six selected artists are Beth Atkinson, Adrienne Lauren Catanese, Simon Fenster, Diane Ferraro, E. Craig Marcin, and Angeli Zankel. The program, conceived by Art Education Program Coordinator Andrea Manning, offers Resident Artist Members access to the Art League’s state of the art studios through open studio time and 50 free hours of class

time each semester. In addition to strengthening their skills with studio and class time, they will experience what it is like to assist behind the scenes in a busy not-for-profit art center and will share what they learn with each other at RAMP meetings and with the public through monthly blog posts. The membership runs June 1st, 2018 through June 1st, 2019, culminating in the opportunity to teach a one-day workshop in the summer of 2019.
