Earl L. Vandermeulen High School has been named a top high school by U.S. News & World Report for 2019. Of all the eligible schools that received the designation, it was ranked fourth in Suffolk County, No. 17 on Long Island, No. 74 within New York State and 804 out of more than 17,000 nationally. The news organization evaluated the high school based on several factors, including ensuring that it serves all students well, using graduation rates and state proficiencytest results in reading and mathematics as indicators, and assessing how well-prepared students are for collegelevel work. “This distinction is a testament to our exceptional educators and the opportunities that our students are expected and encouraged to pursue, starting at the elementary level,” Port Jefferson School District’s Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Jessica Schmettan said. “The recognition is one that ensures our students continue on a path of academic excellence through high school and in future endeavors.” The high school annually boasts numerous AP Scholars and National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students, in addition to the many athletic, musical, civic and volunteer accomplishments of its students.

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and
he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! Basketball Team Honored The Port Jefferson School District’s unified basketball team members were honored at a recent board of education meeting for their successful inaugural season. Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Assistant Principal Kevin Bernier shared highlights of the team’s season and the support and
encouragement that permeated the school. “A culture of collaboration and inclusion emerged all around the building,” he said, as announcements were made, posters were created and students, teachers and administrators were motivated by the new friendships that formed among the team members.

Leo Club Sees The Needs Lions Club International’s Recycle for Sight program. “Not only do our students understand their role in civic engagement, this project helps them recognize the needs of others around the
world,” said Leo Club coadviser Brian Chalmers, of the donations that are placed in inventory for distribution to optical missions internationally.
Port Jefferson Middle School sixth graders took a colorful, exciting trip to Greece and they never even left the building. With social studies teacher Melissa Corey guiding them, and as a supplement to their classroom lessons, the students worked with Google Expeditions Virtual Reality. The simulated environment had them playing a bit of I SPY as they explored the art,
architecture and historical landmarks of the ancient city of Athens, and the Parthenon, the Aegean Sea and the island of Santorini. Helping to bring the history to life was BOCES integration specialist Claudia Camassa, whom teachers worked with to learn how to navigate and guide their students with this immersive technology. This was the first time
they worked with Google Expeditions in the middle/ high school library and experienced what student Sean Wilson described as “incredible detail and color.” Added his classmate Matthew Wengatz, “I learn by seeing. This makes geography much more interesting to understand and it is just cool.”

Thursday July 4 Artists on the Lane! Environmental Responsibility Port Jefferson Middle School sixth graders engaged in conversations about pollution, green roofs and stormwater management when they were visited by a representative of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County. The students in Janelle Bellotti’s science classes worked with Mark
Cappellino, a marine youth educator from the county’s stormwater management program and planted sedum on the school’s green roof. They learned that sedum is a succulent that can live in dry places with hot or cold conditions. Cappellino also taught them that green roofs help filter water and make buildings more energy efficient.
“They all felt a great sense of environmental responsibility in replenishing our plants and helping to clean up the garden,” Bellotti said, adding her gratitude to Mr. Cappellino, Suffolk County and Cornell University for providing the plants. “It really was an amazing experience.”

It All Adds Up Edna Louise Spear Elementary School fourth and fifth grade students placed first and second, respectively, in the 2019 Suffolk County Math Olympiad Competition recently held at Stony Brook University. The students, who are all in the SEAL Studies Enriching Academic Learning program, competed against 60 other schools for the impressive
achievement. The competition for the top five fourth-grade and the top five fifth-grade Olympiad students from Port Jefferson was an opportunity to learn important strategies for problem-solving. Fourth graders Yan Kai placed second and Austin Garcia placed eighth out of all the fourth graders in Suffolk County. In addition to Yan and
Austin the fourth grade team members are Benjamin Batter, Avery Eisaman and Kenshin Sugimoto. The fifth grade team members are Kevin Hong, Mari Fukuto, Anvang Jiang, Christopher Nam and Tucker Stanton. “I commend these students on their efforts all year long to prepare for this competition,” teacher Kate Zvokel said. “It is a wonderful achievement.”

WMHO Celebrates 80 Years The Ward Melville Heritage Organization is celebrating a milestone it its history with a variety of events for the entire family. Mark your calendars for these not to be missed happenings throughout the summer and fall that will literally take you on a historical and musical journey. “Music Through Time” free summer concerts will take place each Sunday evening 7 pm to 9 pm at the Stony Brook Village Post Office July 7 through August 18 with offerings literally through each of the decades from when WMHO began to the present day. Science Unplugged As part of the “Science Unplugged” program offered through Stony Brook University’s Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, Rocky Point High School students in Guy Reid’s human anatomy and physiology classes learned about the connection between electricity and brain function during a guest lecture from Julia Tomasello, a graduate researcher at Stony Brook University. During Ms. Tomasello’s
presentation, “Your Brain: It’s Electric,” students discussed the structure of stem cells and how electrical transmission problems relate to neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. Students also discussed current and future possible treatments for these conditions. These discussions tied to class topics related to the brain and human nervous system. Ms. Tomasello also shared information about life as a
university student, and as a researcher. The “Science Unplugged” program gives students the opportunity to speak with professionals from the field, ask them about their research and familiarize themselves with what it means to be a research scientist. Rocky Point High School looks forward to continuing to schedule additional speaking opportunities with the university.
A Home Run Rocky Point High School baseball teams continued its long-standing tradition of giving to others when they once again visited and volunteered at Maureen’s Haven Homeless Outreach Center this spring. Upon arrival at the center, the team members helped to tidy up the facility, cleaning the
floors and setting up bedding and sleeping areas. Additionally, they readied the dining spaces, packed lunch bags and placed donations on the beds of those who would be visiting. As part of this effort, the teams provided both food donations for the center, as well as toiletry items and gift cards to
local restaurants for those who stay. The program has been conducting this outreach effort for the past seven years, beginning first under the direction of now retired coach Andrew Aschettino, who facilitated the effort twice a year.

Scoring Points Rocky Point High School girls basketball program recently received recognition by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for their fundraising efforts. The varsity and JV teams raised $1,400 during their campaign, which concluded on the last game of the year and the team’s senior night. Each member of the team had supporters donate money and sign their pink
fundraising T-shirts, which were worn as warm ups at the last game. A bake sale with goods made by team members also brought in funds during half time. This was the largest amount of money raised in the seven years Rocky Point asketball has participated. Junior captains of the varsity team, Clare Levy and Madison Gennaro, helped organize fund-raising efforts
and JV player, Kerry Campo, raised the most money of any team member. “Rocky Point girls basketball commitment to this important cause shows the kind of character and integrity that makes up the entire program and pulses through each and every student/athlete,” said coach Scott Lindsay.
