Promoting Wellness in Schools The Port Jefferson School District in conjunction with It Takes a Village Wellness/Education Alive recently presented a community presentation, called “Promoting Wellness in Our Schools

and Community. The presentation focused on tools for effective management of stress and anxiety through simple movement and breathing techniques, mindfulness practices and

the importance of good nutrition. It also featured a student activity area for school-age children.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

On June 13th, the Port Jefferson Board of Education presented 61 Earl L. Vandermeulen High School and Port Jefferson Middle School students with the Presidential Service Award. To earn the recognition, the students each volunteered between 50 and 100 hours of their time to the Port Jefferson community. The volunteer program is directed by parent volunteer Jackie Hull. The Port Jefferson School District extends SETTING AN EXAMPLE - The Port Jefferson Board of Education recently recognized its congratulations to the district administrators Danielle Turner, Ed.D., director of physical education, health following Presidential and athletics, and Michael Caravello, Ed.D., director of music and fine arts, for setting Service Award recipients: a positive example to students by earning their doctorates this year. Board of Education Meeting After heartfelt goodbyes, the district approved tenure for Caitlin Terrell, a teaching assistant; Selinda Moore, a library media specialist, and Paige Lohmann, a special education teacher. In addressing the newly tenured employees, Ms. Brennan said, “We hope you each continue to the promise we have seen in you and you have a long and successful career here in Port Jefferson.” Additionally, the board of education took a moment to recognize retiring member Robert Ramus,

At its June 13th meeting, the Port Jefferson Board of Education bid a farewell to three retiring employees and congratulated three educators on receiving tenure. District administrators stood to speak highly of retirees Lorraine Novellino, an elementary school teacher; Carrie Morgan, a high school art teacher, and Maureen Colin, a teacher aide. “We wish each of you the very best in the next phase of your lives,” said Board of Education President Kathleen Brennan.

Celebrating Flag Day Students from throughout the Three Village Central School District recently celebrated the nation’s stars and stripes at commemorative Flag Day events. During ceremonies held at the respective elementary schools, the students sung a number of patriotic songs, shared patriotic themed essays and donned clothing items

and artistic creations in the nation’s colors – red, white and blue. At W.S. Mount Elementary School, the raising of the American flag was an exceptionally special one this year. Thanks to a successful cookie drive fundraiser for servicemen and women, local Girl Scout Troop 337 received a flag that was flown by the U.S. Army

over Afghanistan. In turn, the troop presented that flag to the school and assisted the building’s Boy and Girl Scouts with the traditional raising of the flag at the start of the ceremony. This particular flag will fly on each Flag Day at Mount for as long as the troop members are students.

Heading to Middle School The future Port Jefferson Class of 2024, celebrated their moving up to middle school at a ceremony on June 21st at the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School. During the event, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School students, received special classroom, safety patrol and principal recognitions, as well as certificates to signify their promotion to middle school. Speaking to the students during the ceremony was Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Casciano. He

said, “This is a milestone in your education. It is your first significant accomplishment and I have no doubt that you will shine in sixth grade.” Also, speaking at the ceremony was parent Jennifer Cobb. She said, “You should be proud of yourselves. This is an ending and a beginning.” In her remarks to students, pre-K teacher Jennifer Guerrazzi offered the following advice to students: “Stay positive, try new things and reach for the stars.” The ceremony also

included the presentation of a class gift — two new garbage cans for the playground and special surprise gifts for the incoming fifth-grade class that will include messages from the outgoing fifthgraders. The event culminated with the students singing, “How Far I’ll Go” by LinManuel Miranda and Principal Thomas Meehan left students with his words of wisdom. “Always help out someone who needs it,” he said.

Stepping Up to High School

Ninth-grade students at P.J. Gelinas and R.C. Murphy junior high schools were surrounded by proud parents, family and educators during the last week of school this June as they took part in commemorative moving up day ceremonies. Gathered in the gymnasium, Murphy’s graduates received praise and commendation from Principal Vincent Vizzo before members of the

teaching faculty presented students with a number of academic and character achievement awards. Then, each student was individually called to the dais to receive his/her moving up day certificate. At Gelinas, students and families blanketed the front lawn of the school to celebrate the achievements of this year’s graduating class and to mark the school’s 50th anniversary. During the ceremony,

Principal William S. Bernhard announced the successful restoration of the school’s clock tower bell, which made its debut ring during the ceremony. Additionally, studentspeaker Arielle Rohan shared her reflection of the class’s time at Gelinas and her collective hopes for their future before each student was presented with his/her moving up day certificate.

Calling All Artists The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook announces its annual juried art competition, coming this September in Stony Brook. Deadline for all entries is July 27th and this year’s theme is Animal Kingdom: From Tame to Wild. All amateur and professional artists are invited to submit up to three pieces of artwork depicting animals for a flat fee of $30 ($25 for Museum and

LIMarts members). Anyone interested in participating in the competition may register online at longislandmuseum.org. Entrants must be 18 or older. A panel of museum staff members will select the final entries that make up the exhibition, to be displayed in the Visitors Center from September 15th through October 22nd. Two art professionals,

Seung Lee, Professor of Art and Director of Fine Arts and Graduate Studies at LIU Post; and Christina Mossaides Strassfield, Museum Director and Chief Curator of Guild Hall Museum will select the winning entries. The winners will be announced at an artist’s reception on Friday, September 15th, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

On Friday, June 16th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker and the Stony Brook Trauma Center hosted a Senior Health and Wellness Expo at St. Mark’s Church in Shoreham.
