Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

With its first concert on July 12th, the Art League of Long Island is proud to present a series of Jazz performances to be held quarterly in conjunction with the Jazz Loft in Stony Brook, in the beautiful multi-level Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery. Both the Art League and the Jazz Loft are not-forprofit organizations whose missions share the goal of educating and presenting to the community: in the case of the former it’s the visual arts and the latter the American musical innovation we call Jazz. The series begins with “It’s Gershwin Man” featuring Steve Salerno (pictured left on the guitar), Tom Manuel (pictured far right on the trumpet) and friends on July 12. On view in the gallery is the exhibition “It’s all about the…LIGHT!”, juried by Karen Levitov, Director and Curator of the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery, Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University. The second in the series of performances is on October

Green & White & Golden Memories As I write these words, the Class of 2018 prepares to march onto the old Kienle Field at Lindenhurst Middle School to the familiar strains of Pomp & Circumstance. In just a few short hours, they will embark on the next chapter of their lives, as proud alumni of Lindy High, the last dozen or so years of schooling an already-fading memory. I remember it like it was yesterday. June 25th, 2000, a Saturday morning. Hundreds of folding chairs lined the old grass field, as our parents and loved ones perched on the wooden bleachers excitedly waiting for the ceremony to begin. Behind the scenes, in the locker room of the gymnasium, I paced nervously in my cap and gown, binder in hand, silently running through the words of my valedictory address. As my guidance counselor passed by, she glanced my way. “Do you need a piece of gum Jamie? You look a little green.” And green I was, as I stood on the stage a few moments later, listening to our principal introduce me as the student

whose dream job it was to become a clubhouse reporter for the New York Yankees. Big dreams indeed for a girl who had never held a job outside of a part-time assistant teaching gig at her local dance studio. But that’s what high school was for, to cultivate those lofty goals and give birth to the endless possibilities borne from a college education and our eventual entrance into the great workforce. I often wonder how many of us wound up doing anything comparable to that which we aspired to on that particular day, some 18 years ago. How many ever truly know what they want to be when they grow up? Perhaps we’re not supposed to. Much has changed in the nearly two decades that have elapsed as we spread our wings and went our respective separate ways in the search for a lifetime of fulfillment. For some, college called, degrees were earned and positions accepted at prestigious corporations. For others, the path evolved a bit differently, perhaps in settling down to start

a family and build a home, or to explore other creative outlets and passions en route to a less traditional existence. To each his or her own, as they say. Ten years later, at our first reunion gathering, we reconvened as a class, a bit older and a tad wiser; overall, though, not much seemed to have changed. Looking across the bar at the old familiar faces, it was as if no time had passed. In the blink of an eye, we were back on that field, decked out in our Bulldog green and white, the world at our fingertips. In just two short years, we will likely gather once again, this time at our 20th reunion. How will the stories have evolved? What new tales will we have to share? Will the past still seem as easily within reach as it once was? I have a feeling it will. As they say in my district ~ Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog ~ and it’s true. To the graduating Class of 2018 . . . may your memories be just as fond 18 years from now as they are today. Mine certainly are.

The Beth C. Tortolani Foundation Helps Provide Counseling and Support for Low-Income Breast Cancer Patients The Adelphi Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from the Beth C. Tortolani Foundation which allows the program to provide free social work services to ensure that underserved women are able to overcome barriers to care. These services include bilingual counseling and patient navigation for breast cancer patients treated at local hospitals and provide referrals to community agencies that provide assistance such as food, transportation and legal services. The grant also

Program Receives Grant helps to facilitate a Spanishlanguage support group, called Cafecito, held twice a month in Westbury. “Our licensed social workers offer free bilingual counseling to breast cancer patients treated at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) as well as those referred from other local hospitals,” says Reyna Machado, assistant director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program. In addition to the hotline - 800.877.8077 - the Adelphi Program offers a live chat with a licensed social worker, support groups in English and Spanish and referrals to free or low-cost mammography screening.

No More Straws Nassakeag Elementary School sixth-graders in Robyn Weinstein’s class took action to help protect the earth through a letter writing campaign to reduce the use of plastic straws. The students wrote to

local food establishments, asking for them to reduce or stop using plastic straws, noting that they have been found in the stomachs and noses of deceased sea animals. Citing the many alternatives to plastic – including bamboos,

glass, paper or metal – the students encouraged several locations to embrace this initiative and, to date, one agreed to create a new “straws by request only” policy.

On Monday, June 4th, Suffolk County Legislator Anker attended the Mount Sinai Civic Association to administer the oaths of office for President Ann Becker, Vice President and Corresponding Secretary Brad Arrington, Membership Secretary Jennifer Roth, Recording Secretary Lisa Pfeffer and newly elected Treasurer Monica Stone.

“Being involved in your local civic organization is the key to maintaining happy and healthy communities,” said Legislator Anker. “As a longtime member, it was my pleasure to administer the Oath of Office to the Mount Sinai Civic Officers.” Established in 1916, the Mount Sinai Civic is involved in zoning issues,

land preservation, traffic calming, safety issues and educating residents about political, educational and social activities. The Mount Sinai Civic Association meets on Monday’s at 8 p.m. at the Heritage Park Center in Mount Sinai. It will have their next meeting on Monday, September 10th.

The third in the series is on February 21st, 2019, when Vanessa Trouble, Steve Salerno and John Marshall will feature an evening of Brazilian Jazz: “Getz, Gilberto and the Bossa Nova.” The May 9th, 2019, concert will feature the Richie Iacona Trio with Mike Hall, Tom Manuel and featuring Madeline Kole on vocals performing the Great American Songbook. Triumphant Season Members of the Port Jefferson School District’s baseball program were recognized for their impressive accomplishments at the Suffolk County Baseball Awards Banquet, held at Villa Lombardi of Holbrook on June 13th.

Brothers Hunter Ginas and Peyton Ginas, a senior and a sophomore, respectively, were honored as All-League 9 All-Stars for the 2018 season; this is Hunter’s third consecutive year receiving such honors. Jordan Suarez, a junior, was honored as

an All-League player for the 2018 season. Also, coach Ryan McCormick was bestowed with Junior Varsity Coach of the Year honors, as Port Jefferson’s JV team went undefeated in league play this year.

Along with good mental health, MHAW recognizes the importance of physical health. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. After 13 years of hard work, dedication and scholastic commitment, Ward Melville High School seniors Ethan Li and Michael Lu have been named the Class of 2018 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Ethan has maintained a challenging academic schedule throughout his career at Ward Melville, including nine Advanced Placement courses in the area of science, computer science and mathematics alone. He is a National

Advanced Placement Scholar, a national Merit Scholarship Finalist, a 2017 Scholar Chess Player, and was named to the AllAmerican Chess Team from 2016-2018. He is the founder of the Ward Melville Chess Team, a member of the Science Bowl, Math Team and school newspaper. As a dedicated community member, he regularly gives back to the local area as a volunteer chess instructor and as the organizer of Mission: Toothbrush, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, organizes donation drives for various charities and soup kitchens. All-Americans The Three Village Central School District’s Ward Melville High School student-athletes Shannon Berry and Alex Mazzone have been named to the 2018 Under Armour AllAmerica Lacrosse Team. The two seniors will

represent Ward Melville High School on June 30 at Johns Hopkins University where 44 of the nation’s best senior boys and girls will compete in the 13th annual Under Armour All-America North South Game. The games will be

televised live on ESPNU. Alex will attend Georgetown University and Shannon will attend Princeton University where they will continue their athletic careers.

Problem Solving Rocky Point Middle School eighth-grade students in Robert Ciaccio’s technology solutions class put their creativity to the test during their final unit of study and devised several new inventions. Throughout the 20-week program, the students studied seven different problems and worked creatively to develop solutions to overcome those obstacles. Initially they worked to build structures to support weights before moving on to competing in a car race and brainstorming ways to have a car travel up an angled track during a unit on energy. During the final unit, students had the chance to identity a problem and

work in small groups to create solutions. Using a multistep process, one similar to the scientific method, they brainstormed ideas, made note of the various steps they took and designed ideas in their classroom notebook. Ultimately, the students used the various technology tools in the classroom to create prototypes of their solutions. Inspired by the topic of school security, one team created a mechanism to further secure locked doors. The device would prevent locked door handles from moving during a lock out and would be attached to the molding in a doorframe. Looking to help individuals

stay warm in the colder months, another group invented “heatable” gloves using pouches of heating rice that would warm in the microwave. Another group invented a glow up purse, which was designed to help individuals locate items easily in the dark or a poorly lit area. Based on a recent heartbreak suffered by a local family, a team conceptualized an electrical dog door that would be activated and unlocked in the case of an emergency, such as a fire in the house. In addition to designing solutions to global problems, students created intricate puzzles to demonstrate their proficiency using the tools in the classroom.

Elite Athletes Earl L. Vandermeulen High School seniors Isabelle Love and Thomas Mark were each nominated for the Dellecave Award. The two students were the nominees from the high school – each district in Suffolk County nominates

one female and one male graduating senior – for the award, which is named after longtime Suffolk County basketball official and founder of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame Butch Dellecave. In addition to being outstanding

athletes, both students were selected for their exceptional character and integrity. They were recognized along with nominees from other Suffolk County high schools at a recent breakfast ceremony.

On June 15, Councilwoman Jane Bonner attended the Court of Honor ceremony for Trevor Satchell-Sabalja from Boy Scout Troop 390 in Mount Sinai. Trevor’s Eagle Scout project was to refurbish the pond in the courtyard of Mount Sinai Elementary. The project required the removal of shrubs, weeds, poison ivy, stones and rocks for cleaning, replacement of the lining, replanting

the landscaping and the installation of a new water pump. More than thirty people including, scouts, friends and family helped complete the project over two days. The courtyard is the site of several events and classes during the year for the elementary school. “Congratulations to Trevor for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “He is an outstanding young man and who sets a

good example for his peers to follow. Scouts are the leaders of tomorrow, and from what I can tell by knowing Trevor, our future will be in good hands.” To become an Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America, a scout must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership, and perform an approved community service project.

Students at Port Jefferson Middle School spent weeks learning about autism and individuals with the developmental disability. A parent of one of the students presented an idea to Principal Dr. Robert Neidig to create a bulletin board that celebrates the unique qualities of all

people. With the centerpiece title of “We Are All Unique,” each student created a paper puzzle piece showcasing their individuality and gave them to special education teacher Christina Carlson. She, in turn, presented the pieces to seventh-grader

Ryan Whiffen who created the bulletin board on his own. “I gave him the pieces and he did all of the work,” said Carlson, who is proud of Ryan for his efforts in promoting unity and camaraderie throughout the school.

Celebration of Culture Third-grade students in Doreen Marullo’s and Jacqueline Gandolfo’s class culminated their yearlong social studies curriculum with a festive event – MoMA (Museum of Marullo’s/ Gandolfo’s Authors). Through their studies on communities around the world, the students

compared the two African countries of Kenya and Egypt. They researched the culture, geography, history, government and economy of each country. They also read numerous books, took extensive notes to write research books with informational paragraphs, created art projects,

composed songs, wrote poetry and presented information about specific topics in a skit. Other grade levels and classes were invited to visit MoMA, while the third-graders acted as tour guides giving information about different aspects of the museum.

Celebrating Skills development modified included “Cinderella” and “Little Red Riding Hood.” Once they shared their stories, the students walked down the red carpet. They were each announced by their chosen nickname and posed in front of a Hollywood sign that they created with art teacher Richard Anderson. The festive event included a concession stand with candy and popcorn, a viewing of a collection of photos from the class events throughout the school year, a sharing of

memories and the “Classy Awards,” a special award selected for each student. According to Wells, the students worked on different end-of-theyear projects with the Hollywood Ending theme. Some made a memory book, while others created clapperboards inspired by real-life film production and drew their favorite “scene” to help create the ambiance for the event. In addition, each child was presented with an autograph book that was signed by their classmates.

21 Years of Service The Port Jefferson School District Board of Education honored Patricia Gang on June 12th for her more than two decades of service to the Port Jefferson School District. Gang was lauded by Edna Louise Spear Elementary

School Principal Tom Meehan, who had kind words to share about her work with the students. Gang started her career in Port Jefferson with the school lunch program and became affectionately known as the “snack lady” by the students, making

her the most popular person in the school. She later became a teacher assistant and will retire at the end of the school year. “She will be missed and we all wish her well,” Meehan said.

Decades of Influence Earl L. Vandermeulen High School teacher Michel Krivosta was honored by the Port Jefferson School District Board of Education for her three-plus decades of teaching students in the district. She will retire at the end of the school year. With a generous tribute by Christine Austen, the school’s principal, Krivosta was commended for being a tremendous resource and

an outstanding science educator who always held her students to the highest standards of academic achievement and integrity in her classroom. Austen added that Krivosta’s passion, commitment and selfless dedication for teaching and her daily interactions with students were a testament to her influence as an educator and mentor. Under her guidance and

leadership, numerous innovative and creative learning experiments and summer research opportunities at Stony Brook University’s research facilities motivated students to explore and expand their scientific knowledge. Fifty-two students from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School and Port Jefferson Middle School were recently honored with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. Coordinated by Port Jefferson resident Jackie Hull, the recognition is given to each student for their active volunteer service of between 50 and 100 hours in the community. They were presented with a certificate at a ceremony attended by members of the board of education, school community and families for their sustained commitment to civic participation throughout the year. The district has participated in the PVSA since 2010 when it started with one student earning

the award. This year’s honorees were recognized with a combined total of more than 7,300 volunteer hours for the 2017-2018 school year. “These same students typically are very involved in school as well at the community and participate in honors classes, music programs and sports,” said Hull. “The fact that they take time out of their very busy days to help others in [the] community should be commended.
