The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness! Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes. A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around. While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment. However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater
income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground. She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years. She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years. Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals. Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner! Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.” As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. Service awards were presented to Stanley Danowski for 55 years; Peter Van Middelem for 35 years; Thomas DiLorenzo for 30 years; Anthony D’Angelo for 25 years; Chief Nicholas Beckman and Michael Loguercio for 20 years; and Nano Bustamante for 5 years.
“It’s an honor to attend this celebration to recognize our volunteers who put their lives at risk to help others,” said Legislator Anker. “I thank them for their continued service and dedication to keep our communities safe.”
Musical Is Hit With Audiences Three Village Central School District’s W.S. Mount Elementary School fifth and sixth grade drama club members recently took to the stage to perform the beloved musical, “Aladdin Jr.” before two packed audiences. Working under the
direction of drama club adviser Gretchen Tranchino, the studentactors rehearsed for months to bring to life the story of how a “diamond in the rough” transforms from a street rat to learn his true worth lies within. During the performances,
audiences were seemly transported to a “Whole New World” as the students acted flawlessly and performed such hit songs as “Friend Like Me,” “One Jump Ahead,” and “Prince Ali.”

Writers Earn Regional Honors Paul J. Gelinas Junior High School students Ava Della Pietra, Acadia Kunkel and Jacqueline Wu were honored for their original works on the regional level of the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Ava was recently recognized for her writing by the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. In her submission in the personal essay/memoir category,
“The Song of the Night,” she crafted a narrative of a young girl’s relationship with her grandfather through a series of memories and reflections upon life. For this piece, Ms. Della Pietra received the Gold Key award, the highest distinction available for the Northeast Region-at-Large. Acadia’s short story was called “When You Thought
Nothing Could Go Wrong,” and it’s about a girl, Alison, who is a skilled violinist who gets first chair in a prestigious youth orchestra in Manhattan. The story shows how even the best and the brightest struggle with stage fright and imperfections. Jacqueline was honored with a Silver Key award for her Short Story “Forever.”

Students Lend Artistic Talents P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s National Junior Art Honor Society members lent their creative and artistic talents to fashion a one-of-a-kind mural. The piece features 24
mixed media squares forming the Old Field Point Lighthouse in Setauket. The NJHS members contributed to the project by working on the different squares with the help of adviser Michael
Sacco. The completed piece was gifted to Assistant Superintendent Kevin Scanlon and hung in his office using framing created by Gelinas technology teacher Dean Kostis.

Members of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Interact Club in the Port Jefferson School District recently took part in a Habitat for Humanity Student Build. The 15 students were selected to work on a new home in Bellport, where they diligently installed new fencing around the
property and helped ready the home for the family who will be moving in later this year. The students raised $1,500 for Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk, partially from a cheesecake fundraiser they held and some coming from donations. “The experience was
truly a rewarding one,” adviser Deirdre Filippi said. “In addition to learning some new skills, the students really came away with a sense of accomplishment while understanding how they can help to strengthen the greater community.”
A Homerun For Three Village’s All-District Chorus Three Village Central School District’s AllDistrict Chorus recently took to the national stage, as they performed that national anthem at Citi Field before a Mets game. The group, which was
under the direction of Karen Voli, was comprised of 120 sixth graders from all five elementary schools. In addition, the performers were supported by more than 500 district parents and friends during the

in various categories from best community news, entertainment, anchor teams, and overall broadcast, among others. They were subsequently honored for their participation at a recent board of education meeting, where high school assistant principal Kevin Bernier introduced them and the success of the program this year. Chalmers and English teacher Michael Augello was lauded for its growth and evolution throughout the year.

Students from the Aviation Program at Bixhorn Technical Center (BTC) are used to reaching new heights. In a recent pinning ceremony, the students were honored for completing either their first solo flight, or getting their private pilot certificate by the end of the year. Aviation and Private Pilot Training is one of several programs offered by the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology. The Academy is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES and has schools in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead. Students entering the
Aviation and Private Pilot Training Program are put through a rigorous curriculum designed to prepare them to be able to go on a solo flight or graduate with their private pilot’s license. The Academy has a relationship with Mid Island Air Service, located in Brookhaven, New York, where students are able to fly. Twelve students were honored for completing their first solo flight, and another two received their private pilot certificate. Students were pinned with a set of flight wings. The wings, which is a pin worn on the left breast, indicate that the recipient
has completed flight training. Two students were also honored with scholarships during the event. Julia Bonafede of Rocky Point High School, and Derek Coppola of Westhampton Beach High School received the Louis Mancuso, Sr. Aviation Scholarship—a $1000 scholarship from Mid Island Air Service that is awarded to Long Island high school seniors with a love of aviation. Coppola also received a $1000 Alumni grant for furthering his education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
