Grant Challenge Champs The Gold Coast Arts Center is thrilled to announce that their previously reported challenge grant goal posed by the Harvey and Gloria Kaylie Foundation - which stated that if the center could raise $30,000 by June 15th, the foundation would match it - has been achieved and surpassed! The Gold Coast Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) organization that has been
dedicated to promoting and supporting the arts through education, exhibition, performance and outreach on Long Island for over 20 years. The Center is concerned that their widely successful “ARTreach” program is in danger of being cut back due to budget constraints, which would affect hundreds of Long Island and New York students who currently benefit from the
programming. With this fact in mind, The Kaylies, who are philanthropists committed to education and other causes that create a strong community, decided to offer this incentive; Mr. Kaylie was quite impressed with the work that the Gold Coast Arts Center has been doing over the last 20 years in the areas of arts and education. This is the first
challenge grant the Gold Coast Arts Center has ever received. “We are extremely pleased and grateful to our donors who rose to the challenge, and so grateful to the Kaylies for their encouragement and investment in our work” said Regina Gil, founder and Executive Director of the Gold Coast Arts Center, “we have received donations, both small and large, (one boy even gave

The goal is to raise $20,000 to help support services and programs for Long Island families coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease. “Bryan is a champion for those with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. He is a role model for the youth of our country,” states Mary Ann MalackRagona, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “He has continuously expressed the sentiment that he wants to raise awareness about this
deadly disease and help families who live on Long Island.” “It is my hope that substantial funds will be raised to assist Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center in providing for people with dementia and other related disorders,” Mr. Proctor said. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center — which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton — is the only local Alzheimer’s Disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. ADRC works with family members, health care professionals and researchers to ensure quality health care and support to those
impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease through care and consultation, information and referral, training, support groups, and caregiver safety products. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) has announced that Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident and a physical education teacher, will lead a team of swimmers in the 11th Annual Distant Memories Swim on Wednesday, July 23rd, in order to draw attention to this devastating disease that impacts over 60,000 families here on Long Island. In its lifetime, The Swim has raised in excess of $100,000 for those with Alzheimer’s Disease and their unpaid caregivers. Opening ceremonies are expected to begin promptly at 9 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will take to the water at 9:30 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will start out at Asharoken Beach and swim across the bay to Knollwood Beach — a distance of approximately

NEED A NIGHT OUT? The Good Days By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Once in awhile, amidst all your bad days, you’ll have a good day. A great day, even. Make sure you remember those days. Keep them safely in the pockets of your coat or in a jar on your desk, because you need to know that there are and will be better days. You need to remember how, on those days, you felt all warm inside, like you’ve just drunk a hot cup of tea, like a small fire has ignited inside of you. Hold on to the warmth and never let it go. My eyes landed upon these words as I scanned through all the usual mundane drivel one tends to come across on Facebook, shared by one of my friends, and many before
her, from one of those sites which tend to cull such inspirational quotes and sayings. I did attempt to look up the original source, but to no avail; such is the gift and curse of the Internet, I suppose. In any case, whomever thought to put such eloquent words to a concept we all preach but seldom seem to practice – bravo! It is, essentially, just a rewording of the tried and true cliché to appreciate each and every day, to live life to the fullest, to know that “however good or bad a situation is, it will change” (yet another of those “famous” unattributed sayings). But, sometimes, we do need to be reminded. All
situations require appropriate perspective, something we often lack in the heat of the moment. And the happy times? Well they tend to get lost in the shuffle, swept aside in favor of dwelling on those days that didn’t go quite according to plan. I think that’s why I love photography so much. Memories are priceless, to be sure; but there is something truly precious – and irreplaceable – about capturing that instant of happiness forever. These are the days to remember, ‘cause they will not last forever… so said one of Long Island’s finest songwriters, Billy Joel. Best to store them away for a rainy day – or, in my case, snap a photo for posterity.

As the heat rises, the schools close, children are once again enjoying the warm days of summer, counting the days until the bells of September ring again. Courtesy of the Suffolk County Police Athletic League (“P.A.L.”), it is time for the annual summer fishing program to get underway. For just $15, your child can go fishing with the P.A.L. on one of eight dates in July and August. This fee covers four hours of fishing aboard the Taryn Ann fishing boat, poles, bait, cleaning of the fish caught and supervision by P.A.L. personnel. Each child may go on two of these outings. Minnesauke Elementary School’s STARS program – the building’s antibullying, character education program – was honored by the Suffolk County Anti-Bias Task Force for being an innovative school-based program that advances understating and promotes respect among students. The STARS program, which was created last year and fully implemented this school year, stands for Sharing, Trustworthy, Accepting, Respectful and Serving. Representing the school during the ceremony was STARS
program coordinator Leia Woodruff, Assistant Principal Linda Messina and PBIS Committee members Christine Beck, Christine Becker, Melissa Heck, Kate Hunter and Jennifer Shea. Throughout the year, the school focuses on the five character traits outlined in the program. Each month, students who go above and beyond in demonstrating these traits are nominated for a Wii/pizza lunch with the principal, and staff members are also recognized for being “Guiding Lights.” Those “caught” displaying one
P.J. Gelinas Junior High School seventh-grade science research students Maya Pena-Lobel, Noah Mond and Elizabeth Wang achieved high honors at the New York State Science Congress, recently held at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The group earned first place in the

Math Masters W.S. Mount Elementary School’s math team – the Mount Math Masters – once again achieved high scores at this year’s Suffolk County Math Tournament. The building’s two teams competed against 55 other Suffolk County teams comprised of fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders in two different categories, individual and team. Both Mount teams competed on the sixth-grade level, even though there were several fourth- and fifth-graders on the rosters. Advancing past this year’s tough competition, the Mount teams earned both firstand third-place trophies at the event. “This was certainly the most challenging competition we have experienced at the

Growing Up & Moving On
Well, it’s officially summer. School is over and the weather is getting warm. I’m a high school graduate now, and I am expected to act like a man. Looking back, I find it strange that high school seniors are treated like children while they are making some of the most important decisions of their lives. I had to ask to use the restroom a few weeks ago. If we aren’t granted that much freedom, how can we be expected to make smart decisions regarding college? From my experiences, I do not think seventeen year-old kids are responsible enough to make their own decisions. Sure, there may be a few exceptions to the rule, but
generally this idea is true. This is not because we are naturally incapable and immature; it is because we are groomed to look toward others for help and reassurance. When we look at the classroom setting, it becomes clear just how spoon-fed high school students are! Instead of making their own decisions, which would invariably prepare them for real life experiences, administrators cull creative expression and positive decision making. In the Spring of their senior year, students are asked to make decisions regarding where they will spend the remaining four years of their academic career. This decision
will influence their experiences, along with the rest of their lives! Going into college, students will need the basis of these experiences to be rooted in a stellar high school learning process. From the moment they hop on the bus to start kindergarten, children are learning. They are forming their academic persona. Without a doubt, decision making, along with the negation of creative expression, starts that moment they begin their education. If we want our next generation to be successful leaders, and satisfactory people, we cannot treat them as babies, while demanding they make very advanced life choices.

Murphy Junior High School’s Community Connections Club, advised by teachers Emma Domino and Virginia Ferraro, has been applying the skills learned in their family and consumer sciences classes to form positive connections with the surrounding community. Over the past several months, they have completed several handson initiatives aimed at assisting various professional organizations and local individuals. The
group has coordinated a clothing drive for young teens through the SCO Family of Services, collected bottle caps for pediatric oncology IV tubes, made a dozen blankets for the Stony Brook Medical Center, knitted and crocheted more than 90 hats for the Stony Brook neonatal unit and raised $160 for the Save Our Strength organization, which distributes funds, clothing, food and school supplies to U.S. children in need. Additionally, with

the help of the building’s international food classes, the group helped to deliver prepared meals for the Murphy Food Pantry, which services local individuals. “If we can involve students within their local community at the junior high level now, it is our hope is that their community involvement will continue through adulthood, and they will be a lifelong involved community member,” said In their last year Ms. Ferraro. as elementary school students, the fifth-graders in Gina Santini’s class at Port Jefferson Elementary School took a field trip to Nassau BOCES’ Outdoor Education Center, known as “Project Adventure,” on

Moving Up At Murphy Parents, family members and friends filled the gymnasium at R.C. Murphy Junior High School to celebrate the collective academic achievements of this year’s ninth-grade class during the building’s moving-up and awards ceremony. “From day one of your seventh-grade year, it was clear to me that you would be a group who would set the standard for what we expect from our students at Murphy Junior High School – be hard workers, display an amazing effort, appropriate behavior and, most importantly,
have respect for yourself and your teachers,” said Principal Vincent Vizzo, as he addressed the 325-member class. “Seeing you grow over the past three years, I am certain that we as a school and community have created a successful future for you. Now it is up to you to continue on your path. I wish you every success in your future endeavors at Ward Melville High School and in everything you do in life.” Throughout the event, many students were honored for individual success in academic
subject areas, as well as physical fitness, volunteer service and acts of character. Before members of the class received their commemorative movingup certificates, several scholarship awards – the TVTA Scholarship Award, TVTA Service Award and the Three Village Musical Theater Co. Scholarship – were presented. Additionally, the ninthgraders presented their class gift to the school – a beautification project for the entrances to the auditorium and main doors.
Mathletes Are Tops
The Port Jefferson Mathletes team was recognized for winning big this year at the Suffolk County Math Teachers Association awards dinner, held on May 19th. During the dinner, senior Alberto Rescia, team captain Ryan Burke, and Coach Dennis Christofor accepted the team’s award for placing first in Division 1 of the Suffolk County Mathletes. Members of the winning team, included, Burke, who is a junior, Alberto Rescia, a
senior, Kent Ueno, a senior, Danielle Grier, a senior, Romain Popescu, a senior and Ju Mi Ha, a junior. In addition to placing first, team member Ryan Burke, a top team scorer, placed 10th individually in the county out of 800 participants. He was also awarded a third place plaque on the SCMTA Calculus Level Math Contest, which was held in March. Burke also participated in the 2014 American Regional Math League (ARML)
at Pennsylvania State University, representing Port Jefferson High School as a member of the Suffolk County ARML team on May 31st. While there, he scored in the top 20 percent of students. The Suffolk County ARML team also scored high at nationwide competition, placing 12th out of a total of 60 teams, competing in a variety of team events, as well as the final round.

Pooling their fundraising
efforts together, the three buildings donated more than $1,690 and 20 bags of pet-friendly donations to the Port Jefferson-based organization. A lasting reminder of the schools’ efforts will be laid in the pathway to Save-A-Pet, as the schools purchased a commemorative brick that will read “Rocky Point Schools Care About Animals! 2014” The efforts to raise the donations varied from each building. JAE fifth-
graders in Leah Cooper’s and Laura O’Mahoney’s class created dog and cat homes and had other students make monetary pledges to “adopt” their pets. The high school ninth-grade class, advised by Keri Lucadamo, sold bracelets, and the middle school’s seventh-grade class, advised by Catherine O’Connell, pledged to give up salty and sweet snacks and donate instead to save the lives of animals.

Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), Long Island’s premier arts day camp, will present the 11th Anniversary edition of its unique and fun one-day arts camp experience for adults, Usdan University. This year, due to the extreme popularity of both aspects of last year’s combined Organic Gardening and Simple Food class, there will be separate classes in Gardening and in Cooking (in one course, create your own miniature herb garden and in Cooking, learn recipes that incorporate an herb garden harvest). This popular course, in combination, sells out every season in the regular
student curriculum. The cooking workshop will be taught by Chef Richard LaMarita, who has taught at the Natural Gourmet Institute for the past 18 years. In addition to studying at the Institute of Culinary Art, he has worked with Chef Floyd Cardoz at Tabla Restaurant Organic Gardening will be taught by Michaela Himelfarb, a Graduate of SUNY/Old Westbury and the Wilderness Awareness School’s two year Adult Immersion Program & Apprenticeship. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.
