The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum will celebrate the 65th anniversary of its official opening on July 6th. William K. Vanderbilt II - great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the railroad and shipping magnate - died in 1944. His wife Rosamund continued to live in the Vanderbilt Mansion in Centerport until her death in 1947. He realized the potential for his sprawling estate to become a museum for what he called “the use, education and enjoyment of the general public.” That wish prompted him to leave his estate, and a trust fund

to finance its operation, to Suffolk County. The county opened the museum to the public on July 6th, 1950. The anniversary coincides with Arcadia Publishing’s release of Eagle’s Nest: The William K. Vanderbilt II Estate by Stephanie Gress, director of curatorial services for the museum. The book is available on the Arcadia Publishing, Amazon and Barnes & Noble websites, in the Vanderbilt Museum Gift Shop and at local bookstores. Today, the Vanderbilt estate and museum are an important part of Long Island history. It is

a destination for regional visitors interested in natural history, the life of the oceans, armchair journeys through space, and the history of the privileged life on the Gold Coast from the Jazz Age through the Second World War. The Vanderbilt’s Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium is another magnet for visitors. The museum decided to add a planetarium in the late 1960s. Trustees knew a planetarium would enhance the museum’s ability to carry out the science-education aspect of its mission and to honor

Mr. Vanderbilt’s love of science and astronomy, and his interest in celestial navigation. A planetarium also would augment the original Vanderbilt trust fund and help to ensure financial sustainability. The planetarium was opened to the public on June 28th, 1971. Mr. Vanderbilt - known to family and friends as Willie K. - loved the sea and the natural world. In his global oceanic travels, he collected fish and other marine life, birds, invertebrates and cultural artifacts for the personal museum he planned to

Museum Anniversary build on his Long Island estate. Willie Vanderbilt exhibited thousands of the marine specimens he had gathered - one of the world’s most extensive, privately assembled collections from the pre-atomic-era - in his own marine museum, the Hall of Fishes, which he opened to the public in 1922. Wings of the mansion contain galleries of his natural-history and cultural-artifact collections, including the Habitat with its nine wildanimal and marine-life dioramas and eight more in the adjacent Stoll Wing, all created by artisans from

the American Museum of Natural History. The 43-acre waterfront museum complex counts among its extensive collections (which total more than 30,000 objects) the mansion, curator’s cottage, a seaplane hangar and boathouse, centuriesold household furnishings, rare decorative and fine art, the archives and photographic record of Vanderbilt’s circumnavigations of the globe, and published books of his travels. The estate, mansion and museum are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tenured Educators At the June 9th Board of Education meeting, the Port Jefferson School District Board bid a warm farewell to six retiring employees and congratulated five educators on receiving tenure. During the meeting, administrators shared kind words about the retiring teachers and office staff, who worked tirelessly for the students and could never truly be replaced. The district extends its best wishes for a happy and healthy retirement to: Louise Cash, teaching assistant; Vicky Herman, teaching assistant; Loraine Serabian, teaching

assistant; MaryJane Fleckenstein, lifeguard; Marianne McFadden, teacher; and Carole Udovich, office applications specialist. The Board also congratulated tenured employees Maureen Hull, executive director of curriculum and instruction; Taylor Forstell, special education teacher; Celiana Gandolfo, foreign language teacher; Stacia Schoen, speech teacher; and Kelly Spencer, special education teacher. “You have reached a milestone in your careers and we hope that you continue to serve as an inspiration to students over

the next 20 to 30 years,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert. Additionally, Board Vice President James Laffey was recognized for his years of service as a Board member, serving on three committees. “Mr. Laffey really stepped up to the plate. He takes his work on the BOE very seriously and we will miss him,” said BOE President Kathleen Brennan. The Board rounded out the evening in thanking Earl L. Vandermuelen High School senior Paul Capobianco for serving as the student representative to the Board.

Exploring Careers To expose fourth and fifth-graders to various career paths, the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School held its first annual Career Day on June 3rd. During the event, organized by teachers Paige

For the first time since the inception (1985) of the Boys Varsity Golf Long Island Championship Ward Melville has won the cup. Scattered Summer Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a

stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major

artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

Rudolph Giuliani will be the recipient of the “Lifetime Achievement” award at the 30th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic hosted by The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) on Monday, July 13th at the Old Westbury Country Club in Old Westbury. The Marty Lyons Foundation was created by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange,” and a dedicated group of volunteers. The Foundation grants wishes to children between the ages of three and 17 who have terminal or life-threatening illnesses and is unique in that it considers granting a second wish to a deserving child. Mr. Giuliani has held a number of governmental positions during his career, including United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and is most remembered for his leadership and resolve during and after the terrorist attacks that hit New York City on September 11th, 2001. He was named the “Person of the Year” for 2001 by Time magazine and was given an honorary knighthood by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2002 in recognition of his ability to bring not only New York City together during a time of unspeakable sorrow and terror, but also many people around the world. Upon leaving office in 2002, Mr. Giuliani founded a security consulting business, Giuliani Partners LLC, and in 2005 joined the law firm now known as Bracewell & Giuliani LLP. Mr. Giuliani met Mr. Lyons in the mid-1980s and has been a generous supporter of The Marty

Lyons Foundation ever since. “The Mayor has done so much for the people of New York, and so much for me personally. I’m blessed and honored to call him my friend. I am proud to have the opportunity to present this special award to Mayor Giuliani,” said Mr. Lyons The MLF is notfor-profit charitable, tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization. “Have I left things unfinished?” is something you might ask. I could make a very long list if I were just up to the task. There are cobwebs in the corners, multiplying as we speak. Where is the calm serenity at home for which I seek? I picture my house nicely decorated and in my mind “just so.” But to tell the truth, it’s nowhere near; I still have miles to go. My counters and tables are cluttered, I should just put everything away; But some things have no place to go, so in the way they stay. I empty all the closets in an attempt to make it neat, But then I get real tired and I need to take a seat. All the dust has made me stuffy, and so I find it hard to work. I’ve decided it’s my family’s fault as I slowly go berserk.

I go get bags and boxes and open all the drawers; As I start to go through each thing, I find it gives me pause. Memories are now unlocked, and my mind just wanders to the past. What happened to my great resolve to purge this house at last? I now feel very tired, and I think I’ll go to bed; But then I see my bed is strewn with piles of clothes instead. What happened to the promises that I swore I’d keep? I’ll get to it tomorrow, but I have piles to move before I sleep!

NO PANTS DAY - Suffolk County Comptroller John M. Kennedy, Jr., along with all of the Department of Audit & Control, was proud to participate in a “No Pants Day” at the office. The Casual Friday had employees donate money for Long Island Cares Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank. Long Island Cares is dedicated to feeding the hungry here on Long Island.
