A new group of talented athletes who have made a lasting impact on their community and beyond will be inducted into the Miller Place School District Athletic Hall of Fame during this year’s Homecoming weekend, from September 16 to 18. First, inductees must be chosen from a pool of nominees. The MPSD Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is currently accepting nominations for graduates through the Class of 2000 and invites anyone with a candidate in mind to apply. Forms for new applicants, or any updates to current nominees, must be postmarked by June 27. No verbal nominations will be considered. The Committee will finalize its voting process by July 15 and immediately

begin notifying selected candidates. Categories for submission include athletes, coaches/ administrators, and honorary members. Honorary members are those individuals who though they were not athletes or coaches or district administrators, have supported or made a significant contribution to the Miller Place School District athletic program. Athletes will be considered based on their athletic accomplishments and/or impact on an athletic program in high school and/or after graduation. Nominees must have character, leadership and citizenship that is representative of the Hall of Fame honor. Coaches and administrators will be

considered if they have made an outstanding contribution, shown leadership, reached an accomplishment and/or made an impact on Miller Place Athletic programs. Coaches still employed by the district are eligible for three years after separating from the sport. Retired coaches/administrators are immediately eligible after retirement. The Port Jefferson School District has again been ranked among the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education in America. the 16th consecutive year that Port Jefferson – one of only 738 school districts across the nation named in 2022 – has received the prestigious national recognition. The school district boasts numerous vocal, band and orchestral performing groups, and students have numerous opportunities to perform within the community.

On consecutive Fridays, May 20 and May 27, championship games were held in Port Jefferson, after which championship trophies were held high by both the Port Jefferson baseball and boys lacrosse teams. On May 20, the boys lacrosse team started off the championship run with an 11-8 victory over Center Moriches to win the boys lacrosse Suffolk County Class “D” championship. Head coach Taylor Forstell attributed the victory to all the hard work and dedication the team has put in throughout the year.

“These are studentathletes who were hungry for victory,” Forstell said. “They put so much time into preparing for these moments, and I was so happy for them to get to celebrate on their home field in front of hundreds of friends and family members.” The championships did not stop there. On May 27, the Port Jefferson baseball team defeated Pierson 7-6 in front of hundreds of fans lining the first base path. The game ended with Frank Andriani’s awareness on the base path, leading to a game-winning run off a

Many Port Jefferson students take advantage of the musical offerings to keep up their skills on their respective instruments at the Summer Music Camp at Port Jefferson. Registration for the 2022 season, organized by the Port Jefferson School District Music and Fine Arts Department is in progress.

The camp provides an enjoyable and positive opportunity for beginning and advanced students to enhance their musical studies while meeting new friends and playing music together and offers several levels of musical training classes, including beginning band and string. There are also more advanced classes for current elementary and

Rocky Point Eighth Graders Honored With Zone Awards Rocky Point Middle School eighth graders Mary Koski and Brennan Protosow were named 2021-2022 Suffolk Zone Award honorees by the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. PSEG Long Island Is Prepared For Summer 2022 As the approaching 10th anniversary of Superstorm Sandy reminds us of the effects weather can have on the electric system, PSEG Long Island is announcing that it is prepared for hurricane season and to meet peak demand during extreme heat situations this summer. The company’s ongoing electric infrastructure and storm hardening improvements help provide electric reliability to Long Island and the Rockaways throughout the year. PSEG Long Island has incorporated numerous enhancements and upgrades to the electric grid, its systems and its storm processes, including its contingency procedures. “We are committed to providing reliable electric service every day, regardless of the conditions,” said Michael Sullivan, vice president of Electric Operations, PSEG Long Island. “The improvements we have made over the past eight years will help us deliver consistent, resilient power to our customers, today and in the future.” Electric Infrastructure Improvements Across Long Island and the Rockaways, PSEG Long Island has prepared the electric infrastructure by focusing on substation, and transmission and distribution improvements, as well as

by performing circuit and equipment inspections using drones, helicopters and infrared technology. PSEG Long Island’s infrastructure improvements for summer 2022 include: · New or upgraded transformers installed in Round Swamp, Navy Road, Ronkonkoma, Riverhead and Brightwaters substations to provide additional capacity during peak demand · 12 new distribution feeder lines installed in Ocean Beach, Far Rockaway, Round Swamp, Ronkonkoma, Brightwaters and Southampton areas to accommodate load growth · 4 kilovolt (kV) feeder converted to a 13.8 kV feeder line in Montauk area to provide additional feeder capacity · Overhead line replacement in Eastport to supply new load addition · New Round Swamp Road substation constructed with two new 69 kV transmission lines installed from Ruland Road and Plainview substations to serve new load additions in the area · Robert Moses to Captree 23 kV transmission cable replacement to improve reliability on Fire Island · MTA Beach 67th Street 33 kV transmission circuit relocation to support MTA station upgrades in Far Rockaway Storm Hardening Programs Completed

PSEG Long Island crews performing storm-hardening work on the distribution system. Since the implementation of the FEMA-funded stormhardening program funded in 2014, PSEG Long Island has completed storm hardening and reliability work on more than 1,000 miles of distribution mainline circuits. From the first quarter of 2021 to the first quarter of 2022, the sections of circuits that are storm hardened saw a 44% reduction in damage leading to outages compared to the rest of the distribution system. PSEG Long Island is proud to continue its storm hardening work with

Power On, an initiative started in the spring of 2020 that will continue to improve reliability by strengthening distribution lines, targeting the most vulnerable circuits across Long Island and the Rockaways. Since the launch, an additional more than 190 miles of distribution mainline circuits have been storm hardened with stronger poles, thicker wire and other modern equipment. To further protect against storm damage to the energy grid, arborists from PSEG Long Island’s Tree Trimming program

work throughout the year to identify and trim tree limbs in rights of way and along easements that could potentially cause outages during or after a storm. Since 2014, PSEG Long Island removed more than 88,500 hazardous trees and/or large limbs along the distribution and transmission system and trimmed more than 21,000 miles of distribution and transmission line clearance in accordance with the industry best practice clearance standard. This standard preserves the health of the tree and directs future

growth away from power lines. In addition, a new vine mitigation program identified, cut and treated more than 14,000 vine locations across Long Island and the Rockaways. PSEG Long Island also prepares its dedicated workforce for summer by conducting annual hurricane and tropical storm drills and employee training; by developing emergency summer operating plans; and by performing summer-peak reliability analyses to ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet electric demand on high-heat days.

The Differences Between Weather Warnings And Watches Weather is hard to predict. Meteorologists have many tools at their disposal to help forecast storms and other phenomena, but it is impossible to predict the weather with 100 percent accuracy. When the weather takes a turn for the worse, the National Weather Service may issue certain notices to prepare the public. Understanding

the level of threat a notice carries can help people take appropriate action and avoid serious consequences. The NWS uses a fourtier system to alert the public of hazards. Here’s a closer look at what each tier constitutes.

follow the same timeline with issuing alerts. That depends on how fast a weather situation develops. If there is time, an advisory, then a watch and then a warning may be issued. However, if a storm moves in rapidly, only a warning may be issued. People always should pay attention to weather notices so they can be prepared should severe weather be in the forecast.

Each person they serve is assisted in maximizing their potential for selfcare, social, emotional and physical development. The organization’s dedicated team of administrators, direct support professionals and clinicians work together to provide a continuum of care. Services are provided in residences across Queens and Long Island that feel like home. The majority of individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities served by Little Flower participate in their Family Care program. Family Care providers provide an extended, supportive family to individuals who cannot live independently in the community by welcoming them into their homes and families. Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental disabilities across New York City and Long Island.

Family Care providers are a dedicated group that does so much day in and day out by providing personal, social, emotional and physical care. They help these extraordinary individuals live full lives, whether by assisting with scheduling and attending doctor’s appointments, supporting them in seeking employment or helping them gain new experiences on family vacations or community activities.

Little Flower also provides an on-site residential program, Individual Residential Alternatives (IRA), which consists of smallgroup residences that provide residents with more opportunities for greater independence. On any given day, direct support professionals help empower IRA residents by supporting them as they overcome challenges to reach their best potential. While supporting their basic health and well-being, they assist the residents with rehabilitation, guide them in recreational and group activities such as fishing trips or vacations, and support them in their day-to-day goals and as active members of their community. Little Flower continues to discover extraordinary abilities within their residents, and while those individuals may face a more challenging future than most, the organization is confident that they can still enjoy a full and active life. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) has awarded grant funding to the Long Island Museum to support “In the Moment,” a free program which designed to creatively engage those living with dementia-related illnesses and their care partners. “Art can be a powerful tool to enhance quality of life for individuals living with a dementia-related illness and their caregivers. It stimulates the mind and creates opportunities for self-expression and socialization,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s president and chief executive officer. “We are proud to support the Long Island Museum in delivering this impactful program to Long Islanders

affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.” “This AFA grant has allowed us to purchase a 75” Vibe Smartboard Pro to use as we return to inperson programming,” said Lisa Unander, Director of Education at the Long Island Museum. “We are building upon the lessons we learned through remote engagement and bringing the most successful aspects of these virtual programs to enhance our gallery sessions. Specifically, we have seen how powerful short video clips are as a way to engage and bring themes to life. With this grant, we won’t have to lose techniques we now heavily rely on, but instead will be able to incorporate these

tools to create even more memorable multi-sensory moments together.” The Long Island Museum is dedicated to inspiring people of all ages with an understanding and enjoyment of American art, history and carriages as expressed through the heritage of Long Island and its diverse communities. Located in Stony Brook, they have numerous exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, and educational programs for adults and children. The Long Island Museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is a Smithsonian Affiliate. The $6,000 grant will support the Museum’s “In the Moment” program. Created in 2011, this

innovative program takes individuals living with dementia and their care partners on guided tours of the museum’s collection of art, historical objects, and seasonal exhibits. Additionally, the program offers hands-on art workshops which afford opportunities for creative expression, with all needed materials provided for free. All programs are led by museum educators and designed to be engaging and cognitively stimulating. Programming is currently offered virtually through Zoom and as a hybrid, inperson/virtual option. Since its inception, the program served more than 3,200 individuals, according to the Museum. In April 2022, the

Museum hosted its first hybrid In the Moment program with the Making Memories at the Movies event. Participants gathered in the museum’s event space to see clips of films accompanied by facilitated discussions by licensed master social worker Marcy Rhodes, to help prompt memories and spark conversation. Participants also joined Zoom from home, assisted living and senior facilities to partake in this wonderful program. AFA is able to provide vital services, like this grant, through the generosity of individual contributions, sponsorships and fundraising activities. To help support these initiatives or learn more

New York Blood Center Has Declared A Blood Emergency

Several weeks ago, blood donations began to decline, and we’ve seen 6000 fewer blood donations versus earlier in 2022. This is a disturbing trend after the chronic blood crisis during the pandemic and ran counter to our hope that our communities were returning to normal. We

had seen some promising signs with school blood drives returning and many organizations scheduling blood drives for the first time in two years, yet, our donor centers and community blood drives have seen a decrease of 30%. While there are more convenient blood drives

happening, blood donors are just not turning out. Our current inventory is less than 2-3 days with types O+ and O- critically low. We hope that you’ll help us strengthen the message and encourage your constituents and our community to step up and donate.
