to receive a breast cancer diagnosis and the needed treatment that will follow. “When our volunteers answer a hotline call the caller knows that the person they are speaking to has walked in their shoes and understands what they are going through,” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, the coordinator of volunteers. Ms. Rubenstein saysit is also reassuring for the caller to know that not only has the volunteer survived her diagnosis and treatment, she is now doing so well that she is volunteering to help others. Volunteers are required to take in-depth training, which includes breast education, development of important skills, such as active listening, community outreach and knowledge of community resources. The volunteers

also have continuing education throughout the year. The next volunteer training is scheduled for three consecutive Tuesdays, September 11th, 18th and 25th. Breast cancer survivors are encouraged to apply and train to become volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Training will be held at Adelphi University in Garden City, starting Tuesday, September 11th. “We have nearly 100 trained volunteers,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the program. Rutter says that volunteers help the organization in many different ways. “Some speak in the community about their personal experiences, others help by doing fundraising, community outreach, office work, educational presentations, or respond to callers throughout New York State on our hotline,” she says. Volunteer Training

The keynote speaker was Carmen Marc Valvo, an internationally known fashion designer and a colon cancer survivor. It was in 2003 that Mr. Valvo realized that something was wrong. In his late forties at the time, he was just shy of the recommended age of 50 to begin colorectal cancer screening. However, Mr. Valvo said he listened to his body and insisted on having a colonoscopy, a decision that may have saved his life. His doctors found a large tumor inside his colon, and Mr. Valvo underwent surgery. Now a well-known advocate for colon cancer awareness and funding for research, Mr. Valvo credits journalist Katie Couric, former co-host of NBC-TV’s Today Show, for “pulling me out of my cancer closet” and giving him the courage to speak openly about his diagnosis. He continues to promote

Of Energy and Evolution “The energy of the mind is the essence of life.” ~ Aristotle They say that what you put out into the universe in the form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated. I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are

genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as

who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time. And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress. Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.

awareness through his work as a board member of the Colon Cancer Alliance and has given generously of his time to raise money for colorectal research. Clearly emotional, Mr. Valvo looked out at the hundreds of cheering people in his audience and told them, “The one thing that cancer taught me to do is to celebrate every day. Life is joyous…we all need to remember this.” Another cancer survivor, pediatrician Anila Thomas, MD, was in her last year of medical school at age 25, when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in 2011. Following a two-year treatment regimen of spinal taps, infusions and bone marrow biopsies recommended by Northwell Cancer Institute oncologist Jonathan Kolitz, MD, Dr. Thomas was declared cancerfree in 2014. In what she describes “as nothing short of a miracle,” she finished medical school in 2013, and completed her pediatric residency at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in 2017. “And, to top it off, “said Dr. Thomas, “and probably best of all - my daughter, Abigail Sarah Thomas, was born on October 25, 2017. So, take ownership of your survivorship,” she said. “We need to bring hope and encouragement to everyone who has shared this experience.” Richard Barakat MD, physician-in-chief and director of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, who joined the health system in April after many years at Memorial Sloan Kettering in Manhattan, said he was struck by the energy and the passion of survivors, loved ones and staff. “Our overarching goal is to standardize cancer care across Northwell Health – from Westchester, Manhattan, Staten Island and Long

Amid the music and their memories, more than 1,400 cancer survivors, their families and other loved ones gathered Saturday to celebrate the Northwell Health Cancer Institute’s 12th annual Don Monti Cancer Survivors’ Day, held outside the Monter Cancer Center in Lake Success, NY. The day of celebration, made possible through the generosity of the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation, included patients from 12 Northwell hospitals that collectively treat more than 16,000 new cancer patients every year – North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park, Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, LIJ Forest Hills, LIJ Valley Stream, and Huntington, Plainview Glen Cove and Staten Island University hospitals.

Summer Journalism Institute took the floor as joined by Deputy Sheriff Korte, along with their two K-9’s Phillip and Jet. The officers let the students know that the dogs first and foremost role was to find specific materials and keep them safely off of the streets. The dogs are trained anywhere from two-tosix months depending on their age before they are officially able to conduct searches. The officers also demonstrated the dogs’ keen sense of smell through a hands-on activity.

Due to her academic successes and commitment to reporting and writing, Connetquot High School junior Emily Palazzotto has been selected as one of 20 students to attend the Summer Journalism Institute hosted at Stony Brook University. While in attendance for

the weeklong program, Emily will have the opportunity to work alongside seasoned journalists and explore the multimedia aspects of the career path, such as photography and videography. Additionally, she will be provided residency on campus and

will be able to sample the college experience prior to possibly attending in the future. The district, along with Emily’s Advanced Placement English language teacher Alan Fertmann, congratulate her on this outstanding accomplishment.

Sheriff Toulon introduced himself to the young students by describing his role as the Suffolk County sheriff,

National Merit Scholarship Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Ibuki Iwasaki has been named a National Merit Scholarship winner in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Ibuki was chosen from more than 15,000

outstanding students across the nation – and only 15 in Suffolk County – who will receive the $2,500 scholarship. She is among the winners across the country who were selected because of their strong combination

of exceptional academic accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college courses. Ibuki is the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Class of 2018 valedictorian. She is headed to MIT to study physics in the fall.

Teamwork was the catchphrase of the day for members of the Port Jefferson School District Cooking Club on a recent field trip to Sur La Table in Lake Grove. The 19 students in the program took part in a workshop with a professional chef where they were taught to make pasta from scratch, rolling it, shaping it and feeding it into a pasta machine. They also made a Caesar salad and dessert before sitting down to share their meal together. “As hands-on learning

opportunities are always a valuable aspect of the educational process, the students were successful in creating the meal and enjoying it together,” said school social worker Kristin Britt, who leads the program in coordination with the district’s speech language pathologist Stacia Schoen. According to Britt, the focus of the club is social learning, which includes good communication, flexible thinking and cooperation. It also gives students an opportunity to interact with one another,

giving them an active voice within their peer groups to become healthier and happier by taking the time to work together over the meals they create. The Cooking Club is funded by the Royal Educational Foundation of Port Jefferson, which works to strengthen community participation in school programs and provide funds for projects to help assure educational excellence for all students in the Port Jefferson School District.

On Tuesday, June 5th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker congratulated and presented proclamations to Marah Palank and Natalie Chakaberia, two Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair winners from Rocky Point’s Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School. Over 100 Suffolk County schools take part every year in BNL’s Elementary School Science Fair. Some 470 projects, created by over 500 Suffolk County children ranging from kindergarten to 6th grade,

Blessing of the Fleet On June 10th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Jane Bonner attended the Blessing of the Fleet at the Mount Sinai Yacht Club (MSYC). This annual event in Mount Sinai Harbor began with a continental breakfast followed by a boat parade and the blessing. Prizes were awarded for

Congressman Pete King recently honored all the brave men and women of the American military, past and present, who have answered their nation's call to secure our life and liberty during a Great Armed Forces Day event in Hauppauge. The event was hosted by

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and attended by veterans from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars belonging to veterans organizations including the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Korean War,

the Vietnam Veterans of America. The Congressman noted that "The event demonstrated the obligation and commitment we have and must always have to these brave men and women."

PCLI Awards Presented The Press Club of Long Island hosted its annual journalism awards at a dinner at Woodbury Country Club on Thursday, June 7th. The latest inductees in the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame and winner of the Robert W. Greene Public Service Award were honored at the dinner. The highest individual honor bestowed by the press club is induction to the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees were Harvey Aronson, Brian Donovan and Carol Pack. Aronson was a writer, editor and writing coach at Newsday for more than 40 years. Today he is a lecturer at Stony Brook University. Donovan was a longtime investigative reporter at Newsday who has won numerous awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes. Pack is being inducted into the PCLI Contributor’s Wing of the Hall for her work

with PCLI and the Society of Professional Journalists. She is a former PCLI president. The PCLI board chose Newsday for the largemarket Robert W. Greene Public Service Award for an unprecedented database investigation led by reporter Matt Clark, who analyzed more than 60 million rows of data, including 2.5 million tax bills, to reveal deep and discriminatory flaws in the dramatic overhaul of Nassau County’s tax assessment system. This year marks the debut of a small-market Robert W. Greene Public Service Award. The Long Beach Herald was selected for its multi-part series chronicling the city five years after Superstorm Sandy. The Independent/East Hampton Media Group was named best community weekly newspaper by the PCLI board, while Port Washington Magazine was

selected as best magazine. The Delphian, the student paper at Adelphi University, was recognized as this year’s best college newspaper, and The Red & Black, the student online paper at PatchogueMedford High School, is the winner of best high school media outlet. Zach Gottehrer-Cohen, a journalist with Long Island Herald Newspapers, is this year’s James Murphy Cub Reporter of the Year. This year’s PCLI outstanding college Journalist is Erika Peters from Suffolk County Community College, while the Hank Logeman/News 12 High School Journalism Scholarship recipient is Zoe Malin of North Shore High School. Bus Driver Training Ensuring student safety is a top priority, not only in school but also while students travel to and from school. Suffolk Transportation Service (STS) was among a select group of pupil transportation operators in the U.S. chosen by the Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to participate in a training program that encourages coordination between school bus operators and other agencies in emergency situations, such as a terrorism incident. Multiple Suffolk County school districts recently joined with local emergency responders, including Suffolk County Police, Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management, Bay Shore Fire Department, and New York State Bus Contractor’s Association, at STS’s Saxon Avenue Training Facility to

participate in a unique TSA table top training exercise called EXIS (Exercise Information System). The TSA is an agency of the Federal Department of Homeland Security. “Our top priority as a school bus operator is student safety. Suffolk Transportation Service, Inc. is pleased to be selected to spearhead this training program in Suffolk County, which helped all participants enhance their coordination with other agencies to keep students safe,” said John Corrado, President of STS, Suffolk County’s largest pupil transportation provider. Participating school districts were: Port Jefferson, Bay Shore, Longwood, Brentwood, Hauppauge, Three Village, Central Islip, West Islip, Islip, Deer Park, Lindenhurst, Comsewogue, and Eastern Suffolk BOCES. School

districts attendees included security and transportation officials, as well as senior administrators, as either participants or observers. EXIS is a TSA training model used to foster collaboration and communication among both private and public transportation agencies to prevent, plan, protect and respond to violent acts on busses, railroads, and other methods of surface transportation. During the recent day-long training event, the agencies practiced a number of simulated emergency response scenarios. These included a potentially dangerous device found on a bus and a bus involved in an explosion. At the conclusion of training, the TSA experts reviewed the results of the drills with participants to assess their effectiveness.

Colorful Celebration Strength building, coordination and navigating a series of challenging obstacles were some of the benefits of the Port Jefferson School District PTSA-sponsored Autism Awareness Obstacle Color Course Challenge. As a culmination to learning about autism and the strengths and differences of individuals on the spectrum, dozens of

students and their families took part in the event that helped to create awareness and acceptance for autism. Spearheaded by parent Karen Sproul, sunglasses and bandanas were supplied to participants to protect their faces while being doused with a rainbow of cornstarch-based powder, and raffle baskets were auctioned to help raise funds for the PTSA and

autism awareness. “This was a fun and engaging activity for families,” said Port Jefferson Middle School Principal Dr. Robert Neidig. “To promote inclusion and friendship while challenging themselves physically was a rewarding learning opportunity for our students.”

The 6th, 7th and 8th grade students at Jefferson Academic Center collaborated to build a tower garden. A tower garden is a vertical aeroponic system, which is an indoor garden that requires little space and no soil. Plants and vegetables are suspended in chambers and periodically sprayed with a nutrientrich solution. Jefferson Academic Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special education services to middle school students with special education needs. Over the course of

this project, which will extend into the next school year, students will identify the long-term health, environmental, and economic benefits of eating a healthy diet and having a garden. They will learn about, and be aware of, the importance of growing food without using harmful chemicals. “Our goal is to have the students grow food, which can be shared and used in the Home Careers room. They will use and build their literacy skills by following directions, and strengthen math skills by collecting and examining data,” explained Barbara

Vermaelen-Buonagura, ENL Teacher, who spearheaded this activity for the school. At the end of the project, students and staff will create a Power Point presentation. Additionally, the school will team up with School Seeds, the organization that created the Garden Tower Program for schools; the Cornell Cooperative Extension Program; and Mather Hospital to continue to learn more about these topics. The Long Island Science Museum will also provide engaging activities about ecology, the Pine Barrens, and local river ecology.

History Stands Trial A notorious historical mystery captivated a classroom of fourth-grade students at Lynwood Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as they attempted to determine if the Boston Massacre was an act of murder or selfdefense. Equipped with imitation quill pens and detective notepads, students in Sheryl Amallobieta’s class inspected numerous clues found throughout a simulated crime scene that represented the

events that took place the day of the Boston Massacre. Students rotated between six stations where they reviewed different evidence, including artwork created by a British artist, Paul Revere and an unknown artist. The students learned to determine the difference between evidence obtained from bias and unbiased sources as they inspected each piece of artwork. As students continued to gather evidence, each group stopped at several stations where they

listened to firsthand and secondhand accounts from witnesses, examined written clues and saw physical evidence up close. As the investigation concluded, students used the evidence they gathered to make inferences and record a final conclusion on who is at fault for the historic event. As part of the classroom unit on the Revolutionary War, the activity provided students with an engaging hands-on experience that revisited a pivotal event from that time.

National Winners The Connetquot School District congratulates the students enrolled in James Longo’s fifth-grade class at Helen B. Duffield Elementary School for securing the first-place title in Sumdog USA’s National Math Contest, successfully outscoring 1,233 other classes from across the United States. Jaime Canas and Andrew Kwanza, received scores that placed them in top 10 spots among the 25,360 participating students. Mr. Longo’s class has come in first place for regional contests in the past, but this was their first time entering a national contest. Games are individualized for each child’s ability level, so users can play against opponents who have the same skills. “I strongly believe that Sumdog is a great way to motivate my students to practice their skills and improve their speed and accuracy,” said Mr. Longo.
