ecently, Councilwoman Jane Bonner visited Briarcliff Elementary School in Shoreham Wading River School District, Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School in Miller Place and Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School in Rocky Point to thank the students for their efforts to promote recycling. The students presented Councilwoman Bonner with three 55-gallon drums that they designed and painted, which will be placed at town parks for recycling.

The contribution is in addition to Whole Foods Market’s “Feed Four More,” initiative which donated 14 pallets of fresh, nutritious food to Island Harvest during last year’s holiday season. “Whole Foods Market recognizes that hunger is a year-round issue

I recently attended my old dance studio’s annual recital, where I had the opportunity to watch the entire show from the comfort of the audience for only the second year, after 20 years of “gracing” the stage myself. I use that term lightly, as there were quite a number of cringeworthy moments during those two decades of dance. How could there not be? There was the time I froze midway through a number, right as I was dead center, absolutely perplexed as to what the next step might be. Dozens of others twirled and leapt around me, as I stood there, horrified. Talk about the world seeming to move in slow motion around you. All in all, it was probably a five-second pause; but it sure seemed like an eternity until the choreography (thankfully) kicked back in.

Then there was the year I was selected to sit atop another dancer’s shoulders, while he carried me clear across the stage. Oh, and did I mention we were dressed in circus attire? The fact was, we had rehearsed the lift and the dynamics associated with balancing in such a precarious position for weeks on end. However, we had failed to account for the silky, slippery material the costumes would be made of. You can imagine the rest. I believe there exists a photo of the scene, with me desperately clinging onto the “ringmaster’s” hat for dear life with a huge, frozen, petrified grin, silently willing the stage to shrink so that we could make it into the wings immediately. Ah, memories… And then there was the ultimate classic. My first year, six years old. Unfamiliar with the protocol of lining up before
my number, how much time to allow, etc., my mother and I found ourselves in the dressing room as the first few notes of “Somewhere Out There” filtered through the doorway. My song! I’ll leave you with this image: A dozen or so girls tiptoeing in their tutus to the music when, out of nowhere, comes another tiny ballerina, arms flailing, flying across the stage to take her position among the class. Yup. I always did know how to make an entrance. After 20 years, I took my final curtain call. But the desire to dance remains; the amazing feeling you get from being on stage – one that you would only know if you have had the privilege of being there – still lingers on, even as I watched the next generation of dancers take their turns in the spotlight. May they have as many fond memories as I do (and a few bloopers too!).

Submitted By Michael Sceiford - Edward Jones Port Jefferson In many areas of your life, you’re probably aware that it’s useful to keep emotions out of your decision-making — and that’s certainly the case with investing. However, it can be difficult to keep your feelings from influencing your investment decisions. But you may find it easier to invest with your head, rather than your heart, if you know a little something about two different cycles: the market cycle and your emotional cycle. Let’s start with the market cycle. If you’ve been investing for a while, you’re aware (probably highly aware) that the financial markets are rarely static — they are always moving up and down, at least in the short term. (Over the very long term, a period of many decades, the markets have trended up.) But these short-term movements, while perhaps appearing as “zigs” and “zags” on a daily basis, actually form a pattern, or a cycle, that can last for months or years. These cycles are known as bull (up) or bear (down) markets. Going back to the Great Depression, the average bear market has lasted 21 months, while the average bull market has extended for 57 months, according to research from Standard and Poor’s Index Services. These market cycles greatly influence investors’ attitudes and behavior. In fact, they lead to the formation of investors’ emotional cycles. During bull markets, investors tend to feel optimism, excitement and even euphoria. But once a bull market ends and a bear market begins, investors start getting nervous. And the longer and deeper the bear market, the greater the depth of emotion felt by investors. These emotions can begin as anxiety and then progress to denial, fear, desperation and panic. Furthermore, market cycles and emotional cycles don’t really align. For example, investors may well experience euphoria when the market has reached its high point and a bear market has just begun. For a while, then, these investors, fueled by their euphoric feelings over the big gains they’ve achieved, may continue pouring money into the market, even as it’s declining. This type of behavior, though, is probably better suited for when the market is already at a low, when investors’ dollars will buy more shares. Conversely, investors may reach the peak of their fearfulness at the end of a bear market, just when things are about to turn around. At this point, their fear may hold them back from investing — even though, with prices low, it can be a

With every passing day, I become more aware of my surroundings. I try to pick up on the fleeting aspects of life. From the beginning of my high school career, people told me that the four years would be gone before I knew it. They made sure that I was aware that high school is the best time of one’s life. From the first moment I walked into St. John’s, I knew that it would be a place with the power to shape my life. My mannerisms, persona, outlook and mentality have all been influenced by SJB. Each year, on Alumni Career Day, I would
stare in awe at the past graduates, and commend their accomplishments. Now, as a graduate, I am following in their footsteps and going out into the world. Some of my peers will go on to do big things. While I was sitting in that auditorium of 397 other teens, I couldn’t help but to speculate on which kid would become the author. Who would become the politician? Undoubtably, there are movers and shakers within my graduating class. I can only hope that I am one of them. There is no telling what the members of my class will do with their
lives. As I stood beside them on that morning when we moved our tassels, it became clear that we were in this journey together. I am moving on to Villanova, and we were parting ways. However, I feel as though I will be crossing paths with many of my classmates in the future. As an official St. John’s Alumni, I have joined the ranks of those who presented on Career Day. One day, many years from now, I hope to stand alongside my classmates yet again, bragging about my accomplishments, and hearing what my friends have done with their lives.

Meet Your Neighbor! It all began back in 1976. Our country was going through a terrible recession. Our local economy was devastated. At this time, founder Vincent Costello was forced to close his air conditioning and heating contracting business. Looking for a means to support his wife and 10 children, Vinnie stumbled upon a business opportunity, a retail hardware store. Originally opened 1973, it was a small, neglected, under-stocked store of barely over 2,000 square feet located in Deer Park. With no previous retail experience and no other options, Vinnie courageously embarked on a journey that few would ever have dared. Sales were dismal and the store was in desperate need of attention. He worked every day for 5 years and managed to make the store profitable. While most would have been satisfied with this miraculous feat, Vinnie was determined to grow beyond that one small store. By refinancing his home, he opened a second location in 1982. This 5,000 square foot industrial store was also located in Deer Park, on the other side of town.
In 1988, another opportunity arose. A shopping center was being constructed in the little-known town of Nesconset. It wasn’t the most populated area, but Vinnie had lived there for over ten years and he thought that the residents of Nesconset would respond well to a neighborhood hardware store. Did they ever! The 4,000 square foot store was an instant success, managing to be profitable from the day it opened. Over the next four years, the success of that store helped fuel the expansion of the company to larger stores in Farmingdale and Central Islip. During those early growing years, his children worked in the business and contributed to its success. Their dad taught them the importance of taking care of the customers. “Treat them like family,” he would say. He taught them how to solve their problems and how to learn from them. Most importantly, he taught them that the most sacred bond between them and their customers is trust. In 2001, with Vinnie’s encouragement and guidance, six of his children opened a 25,000 square foot store

in Bellmore. This store was the size of all of the other locations combined - it was huge! It seemed impossible to find enough products to fill it. It took some time, but eventually they had a successful home center. This hardware/home center concept has continued over the past nine years in Massapequa Park, Farmingdale, Bethpage, New Hyde Park, Island Park, Centereach, West Islip, North Massapequa, Northport, West Babylon, Garden City Park, Smithtown, East Islip, Rocky Point, Great Neck and Copiague. Summer Astronomy Program The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium will offer a new summer astronomy program for young adults, ages 16-22. The program will be led by Vanderbilt science educators Tom Rico and Roger Ledgister, who also work with Discovering the Universe, the Museum’s mobile science and astronomy classroom that visits Long Island schools. The program, Young Adult Stellar Discussions, will be offered Tuesday evenings 7:30 to 10 p.m., from July 8th through August 26th, at the Planetarium. Fee: $10 per session with advanced, on-line registration (www. vanderbiltmuseum.org), or $15 at the door. Participants will take part in “extended, interactive star talks” with Rico and Ledgister in the Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium. Questions and discussion will be encouraged.
“We’ll look at the galactic neighborhood visible to us on Long Island at this time of year,” Rico said. In-depth discussions will include naming various planets, stars, and constellations, their distance from Earth, size, magnitude, and the possibility of such stars hosting exoplanets. Mars, Saturn and the Moon should all be visible through the telescope in the Vanderbilt Observatory during July, Rico said, with the August focus on lunar and stellar observations. students on to running track and field when they reach the middle and high school. “We love promoting physical fitness in a way that can be a lifelong activity,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, who cheered students on from the starting line. “It is great to see so many parents and community members out here supporting this event.”

On June 8th, over 100 dogs joined their owners at Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc.’s 15th Annual Hounds On The Sound 3K Dog Walk and Adoption Event at the Port Jefferson Harbor Memorial Park. Participants took part in the walk and enjoyed live music, contests, raffles,
vendors and food. Those in attendance had the opportunity to enter in raffles and contests, which offered prizes for different categories such as Best Dog/Owner Look-Alike, Smallest Dog, and Biggest Dog. Save-A-Pet also had animals available for adoption throughout the

Gelinas Junior High School, effective July 1st. Mr. Bernhard will replace Thomas Colletti, who has served as interim principal during the 2013-2014 school year. Mr. Bernhard has spent
his entire professional career in the district, beginning as a mathematics teacher at Gelinas and Ward Melville High School in 1997. Throughout his tenure in the district, Mr. Bernhard has also served as the chairman of the mathematics department at both junior high schools and Ward Melville, a position he currently holds. “Mr. Bernhard has proven to be an exceptional leader while working within our secondary mathematics departments, and we are confident his leadership will be a tremendous asset for our students and staff at Gelinas,” said Superintendent of Schools Cheryl Pedisich.

In addition to his work in the district, Mr. Bernhard has served in a number of capacities within the mathematics department at Stony Brook University since the fall of 1997. He holds a bachelor’s of science and master of art in mathematics from Stony Brook University. In recognition of his professional career, he has received honors from several regional educational establishments, including being named a Brookhaven Influential Secondary School Educator and earning the Applied Mathematics and Statistics Outstanding Teacher Award.

The second highlight came as Debra Ferry, the district’s director of physical education, health and athletics, presented this year’s Outstanding Athlete awards to soccer and basketball player Olivia Racanelli and track and field athlete Jasper RubinSigler, who was unable to attend the ceremony, as he was competing at the state championships. Along with Ferry and the coaches, Superintendent of Schools Kenneth Bossert thanked the athletes for their hard work and their parents for supporting them. “I am very proud of our athletic program and am most proud of how you each prioritized athletics, academics and community service,” Bossert said to the athletes.
“You should be proud to be part of a team,” Ferry said. “You all have the common bond of being a Port Jefferson athlete. PROMOTING RECYCLING - Recently, Councilwoman Jane Bonner visited Briarcliff Elementary School in the Shoreham Wading River School District, Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School in Miller Place and Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School in Rocky Point to thank the students for their efforts to promote recycling. The students presented Councilwoman Bonner with three 55 gallon drums that they designed and painted which will be placed at town parks for recycling.
More than 60 high school seniors in the Port Jefferson School District were recognized for their athletic accomplishments at an awards ceremony on June 5th in the high school auditorium. During the evening, the students’ coaches honored every athlete, sharing memories of their accomplishments on the field, during tournaments and in games. All honorees were presented with senior athletic awards, as well as NYSPHSAA Scholar/ Athlete Team awards for teams whose members maintained at least a 90 percent GPA during their sports season. One highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Friends of Christine Stoddard scholarship to boys varsity baseball team member Morgan Sakovich and

String Quartet Performs
Orchestra students at Port Jefferson Middle School were treated to a performance by Stony Brook University’s string quartet on May 4th in the Port Jefferson High School auditorium. The event was made possible by the Staller Center Outreach Endowment program, headed by Staller Center outreach coordinator Paul Newland.
The quartet, comprised of violinists Anne Sophie Anderson and Andy Bhasin, violists Philip Carter and Brett Walfish, and cellist Kumee Lee, performed works by Brahms, Dvorak, Shostakovich and Piazzolla. Pieces included Dvorak’s String Quartet No. 12 “American,” Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8, Piazzolla’s “Liber Tango” and an

As part of the school’s continued recycling efforts, Setauket Elementary School kindergartners in Lori Bard’s and Kelly Freeman’s classes were selected to beautify a 55-gallon drum for the Town of Brookhaven
Painting and Recycling Program. With the help of their teachers and several parent volunteers, the classes created a “Setauket Cares” design on the receptacle to symbolize their commitment to keeping
their neighborhood free of waste. The painted piece will be placed in a town park within the surrounding area and will be used to promote the town’s singlestream recycling program.
Ensembles Perform The high school wind ensemble and middle school seventhand eighth-grade orchestra in the Port Jefferson School District performed at the NYSSMA Major Organization Festival at
William Floyd High School on May 30th. Both groups performed several pieces for a panel of adjudicators, who evaluated them on quality of performance and level of musicianship.

Pool Safety Pledge The YMCA of Long Island, the leading local provider of swim lessons, aquatics programs and lifeguard training, is encouraging Long Island parents and children to take the national “Pool Safely Pledge,” to be safe in and around the water this summer. A campaign of the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, and
now in its fifth year, “Pool Safely” (www.poolsafely. gov) is a comprehensive pool safety program which includes safety tips and checklists for parents, along with a commitment by parents, caregivers and children to follow recommended safety guidelines designed to prevent residential drowning and entrapment incidents.
“With summer just around the corner, ‘Pool Safely’ is a perfect opportunity to reinforce basic water safety practices for parents, and to instill in children at an early age the importance of following these rules,” said YMCA of LI President and CEO Anne Brigis. “As a national partner with the US CPSC on this campaign, we encourage all of our

By: Peggy Bayer, Islip People came from all around to see what they could see. They heard she had a lot of things piled high as they could be. How did she gather all this stuff? It took so many years. To dispose of it will be quite rough - at least for her in tears. For each treasured trinket is a sweet memory Of her youth, of her husband, and her children - there were three. A sweet blue baby blanket from her first baby born. It may be frayed and tattered and just a little torn. She does not want to part with it for any price, you see. Though now adult, he’ll be her baby for eternity. So now she clings to each old thing feeling quite forlorn. For people gone now from her life, she still has to mourn. They will be coming with a dumpster and then the moving truck. She feels as if her life is now running quite amuck. She hurries to another pile and opens the next box. A blond curl tied with ribbon - it’s the second baby’s locks. Someone picks up an old knickknack and offers her ‘a buck.’ And now she feels as though she’s been truly struck.

She found handmade greeting cards “To my Mommy and my Dad.” If this was better for her, why did it feel so bad? This was her life piled up outside she wanted to declare. She was afraid of all the changes and moving now elsewhere. Don’t make me feel like I’m a problem - I’m your mother after all. Don’t be impatient with me or bothered when I call. She wanted them to know her feelings and to let her know they care. Please listen to me - my memories I need to share!

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) offers an eight-hour Anger Management Class for adults seeking to learn skills to manage conflict, stress and anger. The course is offered monthly in LICADD’s Mineola office, and complements the agency’s 12-week Anger Management Program that meets in Ronkonkoma on Monday evenings and Mineola on Tuesday evenings. LICADD’s anger management program is an evidence-based psychoeducational intervention designed to help participants build skills in stress management, i n t e r p e r s o n a l communication, empathy, conflict resolution, impulse control and emotional intelligence. New participants can expect an assessment by a LICADD Clinical Team member to determine the anger management
issues and the reasons that the client seeks anger management help. During the anger management assessment, the agency assesses for signs or symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, mental health disorders, trauma, physical and sexual abuse, legal involvement, domestic violence, substance abuse and dependence issues. New classes for a oneday session begin on June 21st, July 26th and August 23rd. Clients can choose between the onetime eight-hour course or the 12 sessions that meet weekly. In each, clients have an opportunity to identify their triggers, and practice practical, effective strategies for processing and controlling their emotions. Individual anger management sessions are offered in cases where a client is uncomfortable in a group setting. Upon completion of the class and/or course, participants
receive a certificate as proof of their progress. “For many clients, anger and the difficulty they experience in dealing with conflict, has threatened their personal and professional relationships. We want every participant to learn successful coping skills for managing their anger,” explains Anger Management Coordinator Marcie Siciliano, “we provide the education and resources for our clients to deal with stress in healthy ways.” The fees associated with the Anger Management services are minimal and competitive.
