This year’s posthumous inductee is Marie Colvin, an Oyster Bay native who served as a war correspondent for The Sunday Times in London and died in the siege of Homs in Syria in 2012. In her honor, Stony Brook University established the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting. This year’s inductee to the PCLI Contributors Wing of the Hall of Fame is Vicky Katz Whittaker, who served as president of the press club in 1979-1980 and was instrumental in creating many of its current programs and policies. The Robert W. Greene Public Service Award was awarded to Newsday for its multi-part series “LI’s Zombie Houses” about the glut of abandoned homes stuck in foreclosure. Briana Smith, a senior at Hofstra University, is the recipient of this year’s College Journalism Scholarship. Katie Blasl, a reporter for RiverheadLOCAL, is the James Murphy Cub Reporter of the Year. The Delphian, the student paper at Adelphi University, was selected as the Best Collegiate Newspaper. The Great Neck News, published by Blank Slate Media, was selected as the Best Community Weekly Newspaper. The award for Best High School Newspaper is being shared by The Elmont Phoenix of Elmont High School and The Harbor View of Cold Spring Harbor High School. Tim Bolger, managing editor of Long Island Press, is this year’s Phil Spahn Memorial Award winner. The Spahn Award is presented to a PCLI member who has demonstrated leadership, ability and outstanding service to journalism, PCLI and the community.

The Press Club of Long Island announced the winners of its annual awards, including the latest inductees of the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame and winner of the Robert W. Greene Public Service Award, at its Media Awards Dinner on Thursday, June 2nd, at the Woodbury Country Club. “It is such an honor for the press club to present awards to the top journalists on Long island each year,” said PCLI President Chris R. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received more than $18,000 in donations from friends and family members through Go Fund Me to support LICADD’s programs and services to all families and individuals in need. The event featured a tennis tournament, drills, and awards at the Robbie Wagner’s Tennis Tournament Center in Glen Cove.

With the heroin and opiate crisis raging, the demand for LICADD’s services has increased exponentially. Significant price drops in the street price of heroin on Long Island, have increased the number of young people who are using the drug. Calls to LICADD’s hotlines and requests for services mirror these increasing trends and beyond the sheer rise in numbers of young people and their

families seeking heroin addiction treatment services, the rapid progression from snorting to injecting the drug is startling and obviously increases the potential health consequences for users. This significant donation assists the Long Island community by providing additional services for families in desperate need of LICADD’s services. “We are very grateful to

Special Education teachers at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Brookhaven Learning Center (BLC) at Samoset Middle School were certified by Tim Flynn of Special Olympics New York, Long Island Region, to be Special Olympic coaches for an event held at their school. The goal of Special Olympics is to build and create sports programs for special needs individuals. ESBOCES Assistant Principal Susan Gargan said, “We are completely on board with the Special Olympics Program. We have curriculum and

lesson plans in place.” The plans have been developed to provide for the widest range of abilities, giving all athletes a level playing field, and a reasonable chance to win. Flynn said, “BLC has one of our strongest school programs. We have a good relationship with them. They support and have enthusiasm for Special Olympics.” At the Special Olympics event recently held at BLC at Samoset, students competed in track and field events such as softball and turbo javelin throws, 50 and 100-meter running races and wheelchair races.

High school students from other ESBOCES programs volunteered their time to assist corporate volunteers from M&T Bank and Kohl’s to measure and record distances. Trophies were provided by Special Olympics. Scott, a relations manager at M&T Bank, said, “Employees commit to volunteering a few times a year. We sign up to help out in the community and it’s a team-building experience for our employees. Personally, it really makes me feel good to be here.”

Rocky Point High School students and staff recently came together to celebrate Red Nose Day, a campaign dedicated to raising money for children and young people living in poverty. The initiative is a special day to have fun,

come together and work collaboratively to make a difference for children who are in need of help. The project is supported by the public charity Comic Relief Inc. and has raised over $1 billion globally in the past 25 years.

DeVincenzo. The young athlete began playing golf in the sixth grade when he picked up a set of clubs during a summer camp. Shortly there after, his natural talent for the sport began to shine through and he joined the varsity golf team as an eighth-grader. In order to advance to the state competition, DeVincenzo competed in the Suffolk County tournament, where he scored 76-76 and finished seventh. “He plays incredible golf and has had much success,” during the 2016 New York said coach Charles Ruoff. Northwell Health Relocates Northwell Health has relocated its Long Island headquarters to a 100,000-squarefoot building at 2000 Marcus Avenue in New Hyde Park. The leased building is home to about 300 employees

Suffolk County’s highest achieving students from the Class of 2016 were acknowledged and honored by school superintendents, administrators and parents during the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association’s 22nd annual Valedictorian Luncheon, held at the Hyatt Regency Wind Watch Hotel in Hauppauge on June 2nd. The celebratory event was punctuated with music provided by Middle Country School District’s Centereach High School Jazz Ensemble, under the baton of Lee Schaarschmidt. Congratulating the students on their hard work and academic achievements were Susan Schnebel, SCSSA president and Islip School District superintendent of schools; Lars Clemensen, SCSSA vice president and Hampton Bays School District superintendent

of schools; Ken Bossert, SCSSA secretary and Port Jefferson School District superintendent of schools; and Dr. Charles T. Russo, SCSSA president-elect and East Moriches School District superintendent of schools. During her keynote address, 2014 Olympic silver medalist, 2011 Team USA World Champion and former Harvard University women’s hockey team captain Josephine Pucci suggested that the valedictorians adopt a “growth mindset” that thrives on challenges and sees failure as a springboard for growth. “In order to grow, failures are bound to happen,” Pucci said. “If they don’t happen, it means that you aren’t pushing yourself hard enough.” Each valedictorian was called to the stage to receive a certificate and gift of recognition. During

their acknowledgment, the universities they plan on attending were announced, along with their intended majors. The impressive and prestigious list of schools included Princeton University, Stanford University, Cornell University, Columbia University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Tulane University and Vassar College. The SCSSA and its corporate partners also awarded 12 scholarships to graduates planning to pursue a career in education or social services. This was the only event in which the Class of 2016 valedictorians were honored together, and it was a truly memorable occasion for all in attendance.

I recently read an article in the latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine which touched on the apparent surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. While many national and daily chains have resorted to using wire services to supplement their content, community publications remain entrenched in those neighborhoods they serve. Case in point: South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

currently consists of 23 separate editions, circulating to at least double the number of individual neighborhoods, taking in dozens of school districts, libraries, local sports organizations, clubs, religious institutions, and on and on. We accept submissions directly from these groups, as well as any readers who may have something newsworthy to submit. How many publications can boast that? The point is, not many, leading to a flourishing community weekly that caters to its audience. Imagine that. Growing up, South Bay was always the publication you waited to receive in the mail each week, anxious to flip through the pages to read the latest highlights from your neighborhood, scan through

the wedding and birth announcements, academic and athletic accomplishments and more. How exciting it was to actually know some of these people who were featured – and occasionally, if you were lucky, to see your own name in print. Many clippings in my scrapbook are from none other than the old South Bay. How fulfilling to know that, over 60 years after its initial founding, our publication is still providing the same service to the community, to individuals within each neighborhood we reach. You simply can’t replace that sort of personalized touch. So, to all those weeklies out there – keep cranking. Your influence is being widely felt across the nation, one community at a time.
