The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups, and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. When Chris Pendergast visited Edna Louise Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District a few months ago to share a message of strength and determination, his words left an imprint on several of the students. His story of living
with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease for more than 20 years inspired four fifth-grade girls to host a fundraiser. Gwenivere Connelly, Julia Fife, Alice Snyder and Emily Snyder sold small stuffed animals, loom
bracelets, pencils, erasers, notepads and more to raise $334.35 for the ALS Ride for Life Campaign. “We are very proud of them for taking this initiative to help out this worthy cause,” said Principal Thomas Meehan.

Valedictorians Honored
Bossert, SCSSA presidentelect and Elwood School District superintendent of schools, and Roger Tilles, New York State Education Department Board of Regents member. During her keynote address, New York State Commissioner of Education and University of the State of New York President MaryEllen Elia encouraged the valedictorians to ask questions about what it took to get here today and how they can, in turn, support and champion public education tomorrow. “We all benefit from public education, which needs to be supported,” Elia said. “You can give back to support the work that was given to you.” Each valedictorian was called to the stage to receive a certificate and gift of recognition.
During their individual acknowledgements, the universities they plan to attend and their intended majors were announced. The impressive and prestigious list of schools included Boston College, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, Purdue University, Stony Brook University, Tufts University and Yale University. The SCSSA and its corporate sponsors also awarded 12 scholarships to graduates planning to pursue a career in education or social services. In his closing remarks, Dr. Bossert thanked the valedictorians for giving school district administrators and parents a reason to be proud. “It’s the work you do that makes the work we do rewarding,” he told the students.

Teddy Bear Clinic
Injured teddy bears were lined up at Lee Avenue Elementary School in Hicksville yesterday, with kindergarteners taking on the roles of doctors and nurses to treat the injuries. Slings were made, cuts tended to, and teddy bear pulses checked. It was all part of a free “Teddy Bear Clinic” orchestrated by NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Trauma Center to teach young members of the community about injury prevention, treatment, and to educate them on the medical profession. The children were asked to bring in their favorite teddy bear or other stuffed animal, with NYU Winthrop providing equipment for the students to dress up as doctors and nurses. NYU Winthrop trauma nurses assisted students in treating the injured bears, and they were aided by Adelphi University nursing students. Similar Teddy Bear Clinics will be held at elementary schools in Freeport and North Merrick next week. “We teach children how to take safety into their own hands such as by wearing
bike helmets, seat belts, and stopping at stop signs,” said Ellen Berghorn, RN, who heads NYU Winthrop’s Pediatric Injury Prevention Program. “We also teach students that the medical world is really not so scary, and the children’s hands-on experience treating injured bears helps bring that to light.” Added Stephanie Stam, Principal of Lee Avenue School, “It’s so important to impart to young students knowledge that will help keep them safe outside the classroom and prevent injuries, but if emergency medical situations arise, we also want children to have awareness as to what happens next. It’s wonderful that we are able to bring to children hands-on experience in the medical world.” Presentations educated 75 children in total. Among the lessons taught: · Whose job is it to keep our bodies safe? (Ourselves!) · What’s the first thing we do when we get in the car? (Buckle up!) · Where’s the safest place
for kids to sit in the car? (In the back!) · How do we protect our brains? (Wear a helmet!) · What’s the number to call in an emergency? (911) NYU Winthrop nurses also explained their roles as nurses and helped the children learn about different medical instruments. Students also went home armed with flyers providing tips for parents to keep children safe, including the proper safety belt fit. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, a non-profit organization, road injuries are the leading cause of preventable deaths and injuries to children in the US, but child safety seats, correctly used, can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent. Unintentional pedestrian injuries are the fifth leading cause of injuryrelated deaths for children ages 5 to 19, with teens particularly at risk. Safe Kids Worldwide emphasizes the need for children of all ages to put down phones and take off headphones when crossing the street. Added NYU Winthrop’s Berghorn, “The majority of trauma injuries are preventable if children and their parents take basic precautions, stay alert and follow public safety rules.” NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Trauma Injury Prevention and Outreach Program is dedicated to reducing the number of preventable injuries through research, training and public education. The Hospital works throughout the year with local communities to spread awareness about safetyrelated issues and advocate for policies to improve the safety of Long Islanders. Athletic Signings After 13 years of dedication, both in and outside of the classroom, 64 Ward Melville High School have committed to continue their athletic journey at some of the nation’s premier colleges and universities this fall.
Representatives from Brookhaven National Lab and Suffolk County Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Bay Shore Middle School student, Fatema Rahman, as the 2018 Brookhaven National Lab Science Fair (BNL) 6th grade winner. Ms. Rahman’s project, “Does Using Organic Ingredients Affect The Baking Time,” was chosen as the winner in her grade. Her hypothesis for the experiment was, if a cake is baked with organic ingredients, then the bake time will differ as compared to a cake baked without organic ingredients because organic and synthetic fertilizers have different
effects on a plant, which could affect the ingredients made from the plant. In its 34th competition, the winner of each grade level from over 100 Suffolk County schools take part in BNL’s Elementary School Science Fair. Some 470 projects, created by over 500 Suffolk County children ranging from kindergarten to 6th grade, compete.
Artistic Expression Each year the group picks an individual to honor who is of outstanding character and has given back to the world at large. This year, the group chose Diana, Princess of Wales. The
chapter’s 25 members each had a hand in creating the mural, which will be placed on permanent display at Gelinas this summer.

Celebrating Writers As a result of their exemplary talents, close to 70 students at Rocky Point Middle School were named winners in this year’s Lois Lowry literary and art contest. The event, which was started in the middle school in 2003, honors students for written and artistic
pieces. Those winners were celebrated at an ice cream social event on May 31 and had their work published in a commemorative book. “This event just keeps getting better and better,”, said English Department Chairperson Joseph Settepani. “The incredible talent of our
students, the stunning commemorative book compiled by facilitators Sarah Schumacher and Patricia Scott, as well as the support of wonderful parents, administration and our teaching staff, makes this truly an unforgettable community event each year.”

Preparing Peers
Law Enforcement and Personal Training students from two Academy locations recently collaborated in a training exercise to benefit both programs. Personal Training students designed an obstacle course for their Law Enforcement counterparts that is similar to the one used in the Suffolk County Police Department’s Youth Academy, a program many students want to participate in this summer. Training fellow students to prepare for this course provided those studying to be personal trainers with the opportunity to treat participants as clients. The Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology is the career and technical education component of Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) with campuses
for this event. The event also provided for cross-collaboration among many programs, supplying students with realistic industry-related experiences - Carpentry students built the wall for the obstacle course and Professional Photography students documented great moments, as did TV Production students. The ESBOCES Food Service Special Career Education Program prepared healthy meals and beverages for everyone. The Special Career Education programs equip special needs students with skills that may aid them in securing entry-level employment in specific industries. Personal Training students also took students with special needs through the course, as they’ve learned to work with people of all ages, those with physical limitations, and developmental needs. “Everyone came out of this event a winner,” said Personal Training Teacher Jonathan Audiino. “While the project was conceptualized to benefit the Personal Training and Law Enforcement programs, students from numerous classes used this opportunity to engage in project-based learning.”

With coaches, parents, peers and administrators in attendance, seven Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students were honored at the 2018 College Athletic Signing Ceremony. Hosted by the Port Jefferson Athletic Department and introduced by Dr. Danielle Turner, director of health, physical education and athletics, each student committed to playing their respective sports at the collegiate level in the fall. During the ceremony,
varsity head coaches Rod Cawley (track), Andrew Cosci (football), Taylor Forstell (lacrosse) and Mike Maletta (wrestling) commended each student, spoke of their career highlights at Port Jefferson and wished them all well at the next level of their education and athletic endeavors. The course consisted of jumping rope, performing push-ups, scaling a wall, dragging weights with a tow rope to simulate pulling a victim to safety, performing CPR on a dummy, fighting off a perpetrator, making a quick arrest, and other physical challenges. Cartright attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Joe Longo from Troop 45 in Port Jefferson (June 2nd) and Justin Behrens from Troop 354 in Port Jefferson Station (June 3rd). Joe Longo’s Eagle Scout project was to refurbish the children’s play area at Our Lady of Wisdom school located at Infant Jesus Church in Port Jefferson. Joe, with help from his troop, power washed the walls, cleaned and repaired the play structures and sand box, and replanted the garden with dwarf arborvitae and hostas. Eagle Scout Justin’s project was to construct a new events sign in front of the First Presbyterian Church and picnic tables for the children’s playground area at the church.

CEREMONIES HELD - On May 28th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner joined residents, veterans and other elected officials at Memorial Day ceremonies in Mt. Sinai, Sound Beach and Rocky Point. During the events, the Councilwoman honored those who gave their lives in the name of freedom and thanked veterans for the sacrifices they made to preserve freedom and keep our country safe and secure.
Learning in Harmony Registration for the 2018 Summer Music Camp organized by the Port Jefferson School District Music and Fine Arts Department is in progress. The annual camp provides an enjoyable and positive opportunity for beginning and advanced students to enhance their musical studies while meeting new friends and playing music together.
The camp offers several levels of musical training classes, including beginning band and string. There are also more advanced classes for current elementary and middle school band and string instrumentalists. The camp runs from July 9-19 with times varying depending on experience levels. The fee is $125 per class and a class bundle

Rocky Point’s Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School fifth-grade Select Chorus “High Notes” participated in the NYSSMA Major Organization Evaluation Festival this May at Five Towns College, where they performed a Level I program. The group, under the direction of Craig Knapp, performed three songs and were evaluated by two certified NYSSMA Major Organization adjudicators on eight categories, including tone, intonation, balance, technique, accuracy/execution, diction, interpretation, and influencing factors. The adjudicators provided written and oral feedback on these categories, informing the chorus what they did well, and what they can do to improve.
As a result of their performance, the group was awarded “Gold with Distinction.” A “Gold Rating” is defined by NYSSMA as, “will be awarded to organizations that have demonstrated an outstanding level of technical and artistic skill in each of the evaluative categories, including tone, intonation, balance, technique, accuracy/ execution, diction, interpretation and influencing factors, for all three song selections. Any weakness in the musical performance will have been minimal. Recommendations will be given to further enhance their music performance skills.” A “Gold with Distinction Rating” is defined by NYSSMA as, “will be awarded to those
organizations that qualify for a Gold Rating, while having achieved a standard of performance deemed exceptional in all three selections.” Gold with Distinction is the highest level of achievement presented at the NYSSMA Majors Organization Evaluation Festival. The NYSSMA Major Organization Evaluation Festival is the culmination of the music learning process as well as the hard work, dedication, commitment, process and progress the students have made throughout the school year. “The students performed extremely difficult music for their age level and I’m very proud of their accomplishments,” said Mr. Knapp.

Goodwill and compassion are just two of the traits of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School and Port Jefferson Middle School student volunteers who took part in a camp cleanup on a recent weekend. The 11 students from the high school’s Interact Club and seven students from the middle school joined members of the Rotary Club to help maintain the grounds and ready the buildings for campers with
special-needs who attend Center Moriches’ Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck during the summer months. The students raked leaves, planted flowers and cleaned bunks in preparation for the upcoming camp season. According to adviser Deirdre Filippi, the endeavor is always a success and the student volunteers always have a great time. During this visit, two of the student
volunteers inquired about returning back to the camp on their own on the weekends to continue assisting the directors with any help they may need to get ready for the summer programs. “I think their initiative speaks volumes of the kinds of things we do and the intrinsic rewards that are gained when people work together for the greater good of our community,” Filippi said.

I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” ~ Douglas Adams As I sat in the audience at the recent Press Club of Long Island awards ceremony last week, intently listening to the words of one of our Hall of Fame honorees, the legendary writer and reporter Harvey Aronson, I was struck by the notion that one could choose a particular career to pursue and, so many years later {at the tender age of 89}, remain just as devoutly passionate about it. As he eloquently put it, “I wanted to be a writer… and so I became one.” The simplest sentiments are often the most poignant. In addition to his illustrious career as a groundbreaking journalist, Harvey has also devoted quite a number of
decades to the pursuit of teaching his craft to the next generation. Though I wasn’t fortunate to be enrolled in one of his classes myself, I certainly had my fair share of stellar professors through the years, some whom I reflected upon as I soaked in every word spoken by this fascinating man as he stood before the assembled crowd of media elite.

Girl Scout Troops, Boy Scouts, the Setauket, Stony Brook and Port Jefferson Fire Departments and a variety of supporters. Ward Melville High School and R.C. Murphy Junior High School bands played. The parade made its way down Main Street and headed east on Route 25A to the cheers and
flag waving of hundreds. The wreath ceremony took place at the Setauket Veterans Memorial Park on Route 25A. Each year for Memorial Day, Setauket’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3054 sponsors Three Village’s Memorial Day parade.
