Celebrating Men’s Health Hearing health affects a man’s lifestyle, and if he wants to stay active, feel younger and remain socially and professionally engaged, he should address any hearing loss he may be experiencing. This year, National Men’s Heath Week runs from June 10th through June 16th. To help men address their hearing health and determine if they need a comprehensive hearing test by a hearing healthcare professional, BHI is offering the free, quick, and confidential online BHI Hearing Check at www.hearingcheck.org. Studies show that men who address their hearing loss with the use of hearing instruments or other appropriate treatment and accommodations most often improve their quality of life because it helps them maintain a more engaged, active lifestyle at both work and home. Fortunately, the vast majority of people with hearing loss

can benefit from hearing instruments. In fact, eight out of ten hearing instrument users say they’re satisfied with the changes that have occurred in their lives specifically due to their hearing instruments. For decades, research has shown an association between unaddressed hearing loss and a whole range of physical, mental and emotional conditions-from depression, anxiety, and strained relationships to cognitive decline, difficulty learning new tasks, and even failing grades. A national BHI study, in fact, uncovered income loss as an under-recognized consequence of leaving hearing loss unaddressed. People with untreated hearing loss, the study found, lose as much as $30,000 in income annually, depending on their degree of loss. But the use of hearing instruments was found to reduce the risk of income loss dramatically-by 90 to 100 % for

those with milder hearing loss, and from 65 to 77% for those whose hearing loss was severe to moderate. The study also found that people with severe hearing loss who do use hearing instruments are twice as likely to be employed as their peers who don’t use them. In recent years, considerable information has emerged on the link between hearing loss and several common chronic diseases that men suffer-including heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and depression. While research is still needed to fully understand the association between hearing loss and these illnesses, this relatively new information makes it all the more important that men take the BHI Hearing Check and include hearing health as part of their routine medical care. Long Island Hearing and BHI remind men that there are simple things they can do to protect their hearing. W.S. Mount Elementary School’s Mount Math Masters Club once again dominated at the 6th Annual Suffolk County Math Tournament, held at Stony Brook University, and even set three new tournament records. The previous records were held by former Mount teams. Out of the 53 teams from 13 districts in Suffolk County, Mount’s two sixthgrade teams came in first and second place, and team members received five of the 14 individual trophies presented at the end of the contest. Dubbed “the most dominant team in tournament history,” this year’s Mount Math Masters broke the tournament record for highest point total for two teams from the same school with 135 total points out of a possible 160, breaking the record of 133 points shared by the school’s 2012 and 2010 teams. The school’s Team B broke the individual event record of 43 points (set by Mount’s 2010 team) by earning 48 of a possible 50 points. Team B also broke the Mount-held record for most perfect 10s on the individual event, scoring four this year. Mount’s Team B was led by Keene Lu (second

overall), Daniel Ma (third), Daniel Schwartz (fourth), and Tommy DiPietro (sixth), who all scored 10 out of 10 on the individual event, and was supported by Kelsey Ge (tied for 21st). Mount’s Team A was led by Jessica Guo (10th) and Komal Grewal (tied for 16th, bolstered by Victor Jiao, Colin Patton and Maya Pena-Lobel. These juggernaut Math Masters teams, which placed third and fourth in 2009, first and second in 2010, first and third in 2011, and first and second in 2012, were all taught by Linda Earls. The Mount Math Masters Club, comprised of fifth- and sixth-graders, practices for the contest throughout the year by participating in Math Olympiad Challenges. The top scoring members are selected to compete in the annual county competition. During the contest, the students compete in an individual session, where they work on their own to answer 10 very challenging math problems in 30 minutes, before moving on to the team session, where they compete in teams of five to answer 10 extremely challenging math problems in 20 minutes.

More than 154,000 students from all 50 states and 15 foreign countries participated. with mathematics until he connects the subject to his love for baseball. “It has always been a dream of mine to write a children’s book,” she said. “Many of the concepts included in the story are topics that the students are learning about in class but perhaps haven’t thought about in the context of a baseball game.” As a teacher, Ms. Sangiamo has taken

workshops on how to tie literature into math lessons, training she put into use when penning the short story. Many of Ms. Sangiamo’s students quickly became fans of the book, having read it several times. The entire school will have a chance to read the story as well, as it has been added to the collection in the school library.

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker met with Rocky Point Girl Scout Troop 1133 at her Mount Sinai office on Thursday May 30th. The Student Organization at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School recently held class officer elections for the 2013-2014 school year. All students in grades 9-11 participated in the voting process on May 31st, which was organized and run by the senior

class and current Student Organization officers. Everyone was eligible to vote for their future class officers as well as the new Student Organization representatives, who had run a poster campaign throughout the school hallways the week prior to the vote.

Making The Grade

Current S.O. President Amanda San Roman announced the up-andcoming officers to the school over the P.A. system before dismissal on the 31st. The eighth grade will be voting for their future grade nine officers the week of June 3rd.

The Port Jefferson School District is proud to announce that Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students received a collective score of 1,678 on the 2012 SATs, ranking the school No. 11 on Long Island and No. 2 in Suffolk County in SAT scores. According to statistics published by Newsday, the 92 Port Jefferson test-takers had a mean critical reading score of 556, math score of 573 and writing score of 549. The announcement bolsters other recent rankings by Newsweek and the Washington Post, which named Earl L. Vandermeulen High School as a Best High School in America and a Most Challenging High School in the United States.

Watching From The Wings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I write this column, this coming weekend will mark the first dance recital in nearly 20 years at my studio that I will not be a part of. For the first time, I will have the pleasure of viewing the entire three-hour extravaganza from the comfort of my very own auditorium seat. Sure beats racing back and forth between numbers and quick changes to stand – more like hover – near the door, hoping to catch a glimpse of three minutes or so... and then hightailing it backstage in time to line up for my own dance! But seating arrangements aside, there will of course

be that wistful, bittersweet sensation that, just last year (and nearly two thirds of my life before that) that used to be me up on stage, decked out in full costume, makeup, hair… the whole deal. (Oh, and glitter. Can’t forget glitter.) As with any transition, it is often met with mixed emotions – that sense of knowing when the time has come to move on, yet sadness that you will be leaving your comfort zone of people and places and things you have grown to expect as part of your life. Time does move on, things do change; and, in the end, you eventually grow used to the sometimes subtle, sometimes drastic alterations

to “life as you know it.” It’s the same with graduations, with changes in residence or job – everything requires a period of adjustment. And then, without realizing it, there comes a day when you take a step back and realize that this has become the new norm. So here’s to that new norm, to sitting in the audience and being able to truly appreciate all the hard work and dedication that has gone into creating the spectacle before me. And if – no, when – I become nostalgic for my own time in the spotlight, I will call upon the 20 years of fond memories I was fortunate to be a part of... and smile.

Vandermeulen High School this month as part of a music outreach program for their performance/master class series. The visiting SUNY chamber group worked to provide the students with an enriching learning experience within an intimate educational setting. “It has been so wonderful bringing in these ensembles to work with the students,” said Dr. Vanessa

Patriot Pride Ward Melville High School students, faculty and staff came together to foster a culture of kindness during a day centered on compassion, acceptance and awareness – an event they called Patriot PRIDE (Peace, Respect, Integrity, Dependability, Encouragement) Day. Keeping in line with the school’s PBIS program and New York State Dignity for All Students Act regulations, the program offered students many outlets for hearing and experiencing the countless ways that they can help create a culture of kindness. “We hope that by taking this day to pause from our usual routines and focus on kindness, we will all reinvest ourselves in our ability to cultivate a positive environment where everyone feels they belong,” stated Ward Melville Principal Dr. Alan Baum. The event, which was planned by a committee comprised of representatives from almost every program department at the school, offered students the

opportunity to participate in 17 different thematic workshops in addition to hearing from renowned public speaker Tom Thelen. During large group assemblies, the students listened to Mr. Thelen speak about his personal experiences with bullying and the steps they can take to build their self-esteem, develop resiliency and establish a culture of kindness. “The small decisions you make today can have a profound impact on your future,” he told the students. “The power to change lies in the choices, the little choices, you make along the way.” The workshops covered a variety of areas, including the Get.A.Voice project created by R.C. Murphy art teacher Laurie Mandel, retired Ward Melville teacher Tom Lyon’s work with the Heifer International organization, Ward Melville graduate Brooke Ellison’s personal story and work with the Stony Brook University Stem Cell Facility, and information on local outlets such as Long Island Cares. Several high school teachers also volunteered

to conduct workshops, including music teacher Laura Stiegelmaier, who led students in a traditional drum circle using hand drums from around the world, and school clubs encouraged students to sign pledges to be bullyfree and share words of inspiration. Speaking on behalf of herself and fellow social worker and program coordinator Glenda Gregory, Michelle Virga said, “We feel so grateful to the community members and staff who volunteered their time to speak to our students and give them opportunities to see how compassion and kindness make a difference in the real world, and how they can make a difference here in Ward Melville.” She went on to add, “We had many people supporting this effort, including our committee members, technology staff, custodial staff, administration and parent volunteers from our PTSA. The feedback we are hearing from staff and students is overwhelmingly positive, and many hope that it does indeed become an annual tradition.”

Bouquets Of Smiles Port Jefferson Middle School students in Michelle Landetta’s class recently put together beautiful flower arrangements and delivered them to members of the staff in both the middle school and high school. The recipients of this random

act of kindness were happily surprised. “The flowers are beautiful,” said middle school nurse Susan Federico. “They brightened my office and my day!” “Not only did this activity make people’s day better, but it was also about following oral directions to

put the bouquet together,” said Landetta. “Students also had an opportunity to improve upon conversational and social skills that we have been working on all year with speech therapist Stacia Schoen.”

The Rocky Point Union Free School District Board of Education and administration recently commended the outstanding work of junior Sarah Viola, who spent over a year and a half completing an independent research project on Joshua Johnson, one of the first African American portrait painters. The project, for which Sarah received a social studies honors elective credit, called for the student to participate in original research on a

historical topic or person and document the journey through a research paper. Sarah’s paper, which was four chapters in length, focused on the life, lineage and works of Mr. Johnson. She looked at the subjects of his paintings as well as his connection to the influential and political figures of colonial and early American history. To uncover original information for the project, Sarah conducted an interview with a museum curator, visited churches

and town hall record rooms that held records from colonial times in Maryland and Delaware and even followed lineage through graveyards headstones as part of her research process. As a testament to the hard work Sarah put into the project and the valuable resource it would be for future students, a copy of her finished project has been placed in the library at Rocky Point High School.

Creating History As part of their social studies lessons on New York State, first-grade students at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School in the Rocky Point School District used a variety of technological resources to create informational projects on several New York State symbols. Working with technology teacher Jennifer Meschi,

the students researched all of the state’s symbols, including the state flower, gem, song, seal and even fruit, and created illustrations of their chosen topic. After scanning in their drawings to the school’s CrazyTalk software, the students recorded themselves reading excerpts from their research into Audacity

software. Once the recordings were blended with the illustrations, the first-graders used the features of CrazyTalk to make their creations come to life as animated slides. The final products were combined using MovieMaker software to produce one video that covered all research topics.

On May 22nd, the students and staff of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s music and art departments showcased their finest works for the eyes and ears of all who attended their spring concert. The evening, which served as a sort of finale to the district’s year-end performances, boasted multiple displays of artwork, organized by art teachers Lynne Edsall and Carrie Morgan, and included self-portraits, drawings, pottery, 2-D designs, masks and more. was the end result of a “mystery painting” project created by the drawing and painting class. Earlier in the year, students had been given seemingly random colored squares that they had to recreate until the larger picture was revealed. Guests were later welcomed to the school’s auditorium for stellar performances by the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Orchestra, led by Michael Caravello, chamber choir, directed by Jason Crockett, choir, led by Jason Crockett and accompanied by Jeanette Cooper, and wind ensemble, directed by Christine Creighton. musical portion of the evening kicked off with a spirited performance of “Top Gun Anthem,” during which scenes from the film were played on a projection screen. The concert continued with a mix of popular songs such as Bless The Broken Road, famously performed by Rascal Flatts, and classical selections from composers such as Mozart and Bach. The combination of new and old, which also included a medley of Super Mario Brothers music, culminated in a wonderful exhibition of talent that was enjoyed by all.

Literacy Celebration As an extension of their traditional literacy lessons, Rocky Point Middle School students participated in a series of unique literacy events this May, including meeting with professional authors and hosting a schoolwide live poetry event. Gearing up to Poetry Week, students participated in poetry workshops in early May with professional poet Darren Sardelli. Over the course of three days, each English class had the chance to meet with Mr. Sardelli, learn about his path to becoming a poet and listen as he shared excerpts of his original poetry aloud. They even worked as a group to create a class poem with his help. Following the workshops, classroom teachers conducted engaging follow-up lessons focused on this literary genre. Putting their newly acquired poetry skills to use, 67 students participated in this year’s Poetry Slam – an afterschool program coordinated by school library media specialist Catherine O’Connell and English teachers Corrine Salbu, Sarah Schumacher and Trisha Scott. In a library transformed to look like a posh poetry readers corner, students read original poems and poetry by famous poets and received positive feedback in the form of snaps.

Well-known author Gordon Korman visited the school to speak with the students about his vast writing portfolio and how he got his start at a very young age. Mr. Korman’s works are personal favorites of many of the school’s students and several, including the Son Of The

In addition, they were able to improve their conversation initiation skills by talking to peers. The celebration ended with beach ball games as a reward for a job well done. Faculty and staff at Edna Louise Spear participated in Jeans for Troops, a fundraiser to benefit the GI Go Fund, a nonprofit charity that assists veterans with their return from Iraq and Afghanistan, in honor of the holiday. On May 24th, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School teachers Deanna Lilimpakis and Nancy Quinn gave their students the opportunity to learn about Memorial Day through hands-on classroom activity centers. Students were able to learn more about various aspects of the holiday by creating American flags, writing poems using patriotic vocabulary words and searching for objects hidden in red, white and blue confetti.

Ward Melville High School junior Raymond Yin has achieved something earned by less than onetenth of one percent of test takers – a perfect score on the ACT college admission and placement exam. On the exam taken earlier this

year, Raymond earned the highest possible composite score of 36. When asked how he prepared for the exam, Raymond cited taking practice tests and relying on what he had learned in his classes. “I was

very relieved, ecstatic even when I received the results,” he said. While he still has another year of high school ahead of him, he is thinking of pursuing a degree in science or economics in college.

SOUND BEACH SERVICES - Sound Beach Civic Association’s Memorial Day services were held on Monday, May 27th at the Sound Beach Veterans Memorial Park. The ceremony began at noon and was attended by various groups in the community. What Is Crew? in boats dubbed “Shells,” can either be solo or in groups of 2, 4 or 8. I am on a boat consisting of eight, who have been rowing together for St. John the Baptist DHS in West Islip for three years, with friendship being a crucial factor to success. A few weekends ago, my boat competed at the Long Island Championships, held in Oyster Bay. Larger boats are allotted a coxswain, whose job is quite complex. This lightweight coxswain must steer the boat, as well as motivate his crew and, ultimately, win the race. He is truly the core of a first-class boat. Rowers either scull or sweep, with the former using two smaller oars, one in each hand. A sweep rower is almost always in a larger

boat, with the exception being a pair. A sweep rower has one oar and must maintain balance, while still ensuring textbook technique and absolute power. As a rower, I can truly appreciate the physical strength and endurance that an athlete partaking in this sport must command. Most rowers train both on a rowing machine and on the water 5-7 days a week and are extremely dedicated to the pursuit of a gold medal. For the countless hours an athlete puts in throughout the year, he or she is rewarded with less than 10 races, each consisting of less than 6 minutes. It takes a focused mindset to be a rower, but if you can handle the sport, the benefits are endless.

“Your Gildersleeve is my Roger” the words were barely audible through tears and cries of Roger’s name. After having been missing for more than a year from Lindenhurst and turning up on Route 110 in Amityville, Roger, an almost 11 year-old cat was on his way home thanks to a little good fortune and the help of South Bay’s Neighbor Pet’s Place. Charlene Brass recognized her long lost cat’s photo in the April 16th

issue of the paper the day the Babylon Shelter photo was published. This photo was definitely her cat, Roger, who had disappeared in March 2012. Charlene looked for Roger for months and visited the shelter several times searching for him. Lost pet reunions like this, especially cat reunions, only happen once or twice a year; yet, each time one does, it reminds distraught owners never to give up hope.
