Alzheimer’s Disease & Hearing Checks There are many families within our community coping with Alzheimer’s and the challenges it presents,” says William Kent, Director of Long Island Hearing.“ At Long Island Hearing, we want to help ensure that the hearing health of those in our community with Alzheimer’s is appropriately managed. Hearing loss, when left unaddressed, can compound the
difficulties that people with Alzheimer’s and their families already face, however in many cases, the appropriate use of hearing aids can benefit people with Alzheimer’s.” There is strong evidence that hearing impairment contributes to the progression of cognitive dysfunction in older adults. Unmanaged hearing loss can interrupt the cognitive processing
of spoken language and sound, regardless of other coexisting conditions. But when an individual has both Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, many of the symptoms of hearing loss can interact with those common to Alzheimer’s, making the disease more difficult than it might be if the hearing loss had been addressed. Studies have shown that although a significantly higher
percentage of people with Alzheimer’s disease may have hearing loss than their normally aging peers, they are much less likely to receive attention for their hearing needs. “A comprehensive hearing assessment should be part of any Alzheimer’s diagnosis and any hearing loss should be addressed,” says Kent. “By addressing the hearing loss, we can help improve quality-of-

Soaring Results With their fictional bank accounts filled with $100,000, fourth-grade students in Ken Krapf’s class at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School had the chance to work on developing a robust online portfolio during their participation in this year’s Stock Market Game. During the 10-week
program, the students sought out opportunities to grow their initial investment and cultivate impressive financial profiles comprised of at least three stock options. As a result of their efforts, the school’s “Pink Team,” made up of students Amanda DiGirolamo, Olivia McDonnell and
Ashley Olsen, crafted a portfolio that made more than $8,000 during the program. The Stock Market Game reinforces classroom lessons, such as critical thinking, economics and other financial concepts that translate to teachings the students can apply to their futures.

HITTING A HIGH NOTE - Annalisa Welinder, a seventh-grader at Port Jefferson Middle School, took first place in the Sound Symphony Orchestra’s annual solo competition on May 17th for her performance on violin.With the win, Welinder now has the opportunity to be featured as a soloist with the orchestra during its 2014-2015 concert season. A panel of judges ranked Welinder based on overall performance and style.
House Homestead provided the backdrop for a history lesson on the local community for nearly 25 ninth- through 12th-grade students this spring. During the visit, the students met with members of the Rocky Point Historical Society and viewed the grounds of the Hallock House. They toured the old servant quarters, viewed a historic cemetery and took an up-close look at many historical artifacts – including early communication devices and key farming equipment. As a follow up to their visit, the students were invited to assist the Historical Society in cataloging articles about the location. The joint community partnership seeks to teach the students about their town’s history, as well as business skills in research and organization.
Riding For Life Rocky Point Middle School students and staff members joined the global fight against ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, when they helped to raise funds and awareness for the Long Island-based Ride for Life charity this spring. The annual program, founded by Miller Place native Chris Pendergast, is a 12-
day wheelchair journey from eastern Long Island to Manhattan. As part of the ride, organizers visit several locations along the way to gain support for the mission. As the students were empowered by the organization’s cause – Mr. Pendergast’s work to never give up and drive to become advocates for change –
the entire middle school gathered in front of the building to cheer as Ride for Life passed through Rocky Point. Members of the National Junior Honor Society, Community Service Club and middle school cheerleading squad led the school’s charge to fight ALS by creating signs and helping to raise more than $500.

On May 31st, Councilwoman Jane Bonner attended the Court of Honor ceremony for members of Boy Scout Troop 384 in Mount Sinai who attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. “Eagle Scouts are the leaders of tomorrow, and from what I can tell by the achievements and community service of these young men, our future will be in good hands,” said
Councilwoman Bonner. To become an Eagle Scout, a scout must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership, and perform an approved community service project. For John Clancy’s Eagle Scout project, he beautified the Miller PlaceMount Sinai Historical Society. Jack Harrington built picnic benches at Saint Anthony’s High School. Sean Harrington built two picnic tables
and benches for the St. Louis de Montfort Roman Catholic Church. Andrew Holomshek cleared the growth and fallen tree limbs from the Phillip & Davis Cemetery and spread mulch to help prevent regrowth. John Kostic restored and renovated an outdoor atrium at Stony Brook Hospital. Kevin Palmer replaced the front steps to the historic Daniel Hawkins House.

Rocky Point Middle School students and staff members have pledged to treat others with kindness and work to create a culture of compassion in their school and community. For many of the students, this decision came after a powerful character education assembly called Rachel’s Challenge, which profiled the life of Rachel Scott. On April 20th, 1999, Columbine High School student Rachel Scott was the first student killed in the infamous school tragedy. Since this event, Rachel’s acts of kindness and the contents of her diaries have become the foundation of one of the most powerful character
education programs conducted in schools across the nation. During Rachel’s Challenge, students and parents are shown a video about Rachel’s life and the school tragedy in the hopes of motivating the audience to provoke positive change in the way others are treated. After the assembly, the students are encouraged to “take the challenge” and commit to leading a life rooted in kindness and compassion. Presenter Larry Scott (Rachel Scott’s uncle) delivered the assembly at the middle school. His message encouraged the audience to eliminate prejudice from their lives, dare to dream, choose

positive influences, say kind words to others, and to tell the people in their lives that they are loved. He also conducted a separate training program for members of the school’s “Friends of Rachel” and Natural Helpers clubs. These students will be responsible for leading the charge and setting an example for their peers. “You already have a great school and community, but there is always room to enhance these locations,” said Mr. Scott during the session. “If we all work together, we can bring about change and foster a more positive global community.”

Students and administrators in the Rocky Point School District teamed up this spring to help beautify the grounds at Camp PaQua-Tuck. During the spring cleanup program, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Ring, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Deb De Luca, business official Greg Hilton and Executive Director for Educational Services Susan Wilson, all members of the Rocky Point Rotary, worked with Rocky Point High School’s Interact Service Club and their adviser Margaret

Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, (who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair) but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering his services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC area. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Rowing Toward A Championship
This weekend, I am competing in the National Championship for rowing. As the culmination of four years of hard work, this regatta marks the end of my rowing career. Although I started as a very poor athlete, I grew to love the sport. Now, I’m representing St. John the Baptist in the Varsity Quad, along with three of my best friends. I’m also competing in the Varsity Pair. This year proved to be one of the most productive in recent years, as we have six boats competing in this national championship. With so many entries, I believe we have put St. John’s on the map, as a force to be reckoned with
typical summer camp activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cookouts, swimming and boating. Interact is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 14 to 18, sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide encouragement and guidance, but are self-governing and selfsupporting. The Interact chapter at Rocky Point High School is sponsored by the Rocky Point Rotary Club.

I like to think that I have made a positive difference on this team - and maybe I have - but the opportunity to compete on the highest stage available was earned

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp designed for young people ages 6-21 with special needs. Its mission is to help children and adults achieve equality, dignity and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in
by hard work on the part of the entire team. Perhaps our impressive year will lead to advances in the future. With any luck, our bid for a national title ends in a medal. Even if it does not, I can honestly say that my four years as a St. John’s rower have left me a better athlete and a better person. This team has left an imprint on me that will last forever. I will never forget my coaches, my teammates or the memories we’ve formed along the way. I started the season as a substitute, and now I’m on a boat, rowing toward a national championship, with a group of friends I would not trade for the world.

Celebrating Poetry
In recognition of National Poetry Month, Rocky Point Middle School students celebrated the written word this spring during an afterschool poetry slam program. The event, coordinated by school library media specialist Catherine O’Connell, was held in the school’s library, which
was transformed to look like a posh poetry reader’s corner. During the event, more than 30 students shared original poems and poetry by famous poets and spoke about their interest in each of the pieces. Once their readings were finished, the audience generated positive feedback in the
form of snaps. “I was amazed by the insightful, deep and sometimes hilarious original poetry read by our students,” said Ms. O’Connell. “It was an incredibly delightful event in which the students had fun enjoying their peer’s poems in a groovy, relaxing atmosphere!”

The Best & The Brightest By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last night, I had the privilege of attending the annual Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, held at the Woodbury Country Club, honoring the best and the brightest of Long Island’s Journalists. This is the one night each year when we, as members of the press, have the opportunity to recognize fellow protectors of the First Amendment and to mix and mingle with those we admire from afar, on the pages of the weekly and daily newspapers, the
magazines and blogs, over the broadcast airwaves… but rarely have the opportunity to personally acknowledge. This year, as an added bonus, PCLI honored past Outstanding Journalists as part of their initial class of Hall of Fame inductees. To see these giants of the industry assembled before a crowd of their peers was easily the highlight of an evening that had many memorable moments. It is nights like this that remind me why I chose to go into the field of Journalism to begin
with, to pursue a career that many seem to frown upon, for considerably less money than other, far less impactful, careers. Crazy, right? Not when you step back and take stock of a crowd like that, on a night like that, and realize that, yes, it’s all worth it. Congratulations to all the winners, once again. I can only hope that, one day, I will be fortunate enough to stand among you. ‘Til then, I consider myself extremely lucky to be a mere observer, soaking in the inspiration from those who have come before me.

The United Way of Long Island (UWLI) has awarded a grant of $20,000 to Family Service League (FSL) under its Military Family Assistance Project community initiative. This grant will address the immediate financial needs of Long Island’s post-9/11 military families. These funds are used to help military families with a range of immediate financial needs, such as child care expenses, auto repairs and moving expenses. FSL has been operating this program with funding from the UWLI since 2011. “FSL values our partnership with the United Way of Long Island”, stated Karen Boorshtein, President and CEO of Family Service League. “We look forward to our continued work together on this important project in support of our local military families.”

Top Of The Class Out of a class of approximately 580 students, Ward Melville High School seniors Harrison Li and Carolina Zheng have been named the Class of 2014 valedictorian and salutatorian. Harrison will be heading to Harvard University this fall, and Carolina intends on studying computer
science at the University of Pennsylvania. Commenting on this achievement, Principal Dr. Alan Baum said, “They are two terrific students who have worked exceptionally hard. They pursued rigorous and challenging courses of study, and the dedication they put into their work is to be highly
commended. Kudos to each of them, their families for raising such great kids, and their teachers who have helped nurture their academic achievements. I couldn’t be happier for them, and I look forward to learning about their future accomplishments.”
Book Buddies Arrowhead Elementary School students in Tammy Oestreicher’s class worked with their fifthgrade buddies to become published authors. As part of the school’s anti-bullying and character education program, the students have been learning what it means to be a positive role model and the importance of making good choices. The students applied those lessons during their mentoring program to create books titled “Being
A Friend Means…” The completed pieces included illustrations and sentences describing the qualities of a good friend. Each student received a keepsake copy of the project and a commemorative book was donated to the school library. The buddy program has been a longstanding tradition with the class. The fifth-graders volunteer their lunch and recess time to work with Ms. Oestreicher’s students
and will continue their efforts next year as sixthgraders. Throughout the year, they work on different community service, holiday-based and social and emotional awareness campaigns. In April, they raised funds for autism research through a Light It Up Blue program. Working with the student government, the buddies sold bracelets and treats to raise $483 for Autism Speaks.

Helping Those Who Serve R.C. Murphy Junior High School eighth-grader Eric Kirchner led the charge on a community service project aimed at providing the comforts of home to active-duty soldiers and veterans. Through the Ronkonkoma-based organization, Boots on the Ground New York, and with his family’s assistant, Eric volunteered at the food pantry that helps supply veterans with food and other needed supplies.
Eric also coordinated a collection drive at the school. With the help of the Murphy community, Eric collected a number of supplies – including protein bars, toothpaste, peanut butter and phone cards – for the organization. After the initial success of the project, Eric organized an effort to have students in every English class and some special areas write letters of appreciation to

Island Harvest Food Bank, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, today announced that it collected 326,365 pounds of food as part of the Stamp Out Hunger campaign held on Saturday, May 10th. Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest singleday food drive, an annual event in association with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), United States Postal Service and food banks across the country. Locally, all proceeds benefit Island Harvest in supporting more than 300,000 Long Islanders

Stamping Out Hunger — including 110,000 children — who face the risk of going hungry every day. This year’s collection of 326,365 pounds of food from across Long Island is equal to 271,970 meals for those struggling with hunger. “Island Harvest is pleased to see so many of our neighbors here on Long Island who stepped up and generously donated 326,365 pounds of food for those who often don’t have enough food to maintain a healthy life,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. “We are especially grateful
to the NALC and the U.S. Postal Service for their efforts in helping Stamp Out Hunger in our local communities.” In addition to the generous donations, a total of 440 Long Islanders volunteered from various businesses and communities to help Island Harvest sort and pack food collected from the campaign.
