Star Island Yacht Club has announced that it will hold its 29th Annual Shark Tournament on June 18th20th. This annual Father’s Day event has become a Montauk tradition and a major happening, with over 100 boats participating annually, drawing thousands of spectators. Cash prizes will be awarded for the heaviest

shark in the tournament and the heaviest shark for each day. The top three prizes will also be awarded for the heaviest mako, heaviest blue shark and heaviest shark of another species. In addition to this outstanding competition, all sportsmen can contribute to the study of the shark by tagging and releasing sharks that

Over the course of two days, 117 boats and 702 anglers brought in 33 fish, including ten Makos, 14 Threshers and nine Blue Sharks. The heaviest shark was a 377-pound Thresher landed by Ed Groppe aboard Captain David Walters’ “The Reel Deal.” Of the sharks that were weighed in, more than 750 pounds of edible shark meat was donated to the Long Island Council of Churches’ food pantry to help feed those in need. The entry fee is $1,250 per boat. For sports fishermen who would like to get in on the competition but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for either one day or both days of the tournament. Tickets Anyone? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Summer concert season is upon us! I have to admit, I went a little ticket crazy this time around. The instant the Jones Beach schedule was posted, I eagerly scanned it for shows I wanted to see, and then scoured the internet for any special pre-sales, Groupons, etc. that I could find. The problem – well, a temporary inconvenience, as the case may be – is that some summer tours seem to be announced earlier each year and, while there are plenty eager to attend, few people are willing, or able, to commit to such expenses in the middle of Christmas shopping. Me, I ignore such … what’s the word … logic? Rather, I

am of the philosophy that, if you want to do something badly enough, why should you wait for tickets to be sold out and appear on resale sites for triple the price? Spontaneity is key – just press that “purchase” button and worry about minor details like cost and finding a concert companion later! Of course, needless to say, after realizing that I had accumulated tickets to about seven or eight shows over these next several months, I began to panic. Slightly. Trying to remember who likes what types of music, the corresponding dates, times, locations, the cost factor … it’s a bit like being an event planner, desperately trying to fill each slot appropriately. The ultimate

goal, of course, is to not find myself solo the day of the show, contemplating a.) going by myself, b.) attempting to resell the tickets, or c.) worst of all, losing the money laid out and not going at all. A truly lose/lose situation. By the time you read this, I will have attended concert number one (guest confirmed, tickets paid in full), with numbers two and three to follow shortly in the coming week. A bit of overkill, I know. But that’s what summer is all about – enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends, taking in some music, film, culture … whatever the case may be. This is what we look forward to all year. Let’s not forget to savor it now that it’s arrived.

State Success

Ward Melville High School’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America, advised by business teachers Alyssa Chesney-Gold and Carol Vonnes, had a remarkably successful presence at the FBLA State Leadership Conference in Rochester, New York. Over the three days, the team competed in various events focused on different elements of the business

world. With over 600 students in attendance, Ward Melville’s students brought home 23 awards, including two first-place winners, five-second place winners, three thirdplace winners, seven fourth-place winners, and six fifth-place winners. Eighteen members also secured spots to compete at the National Leadership Conference in Chicago, Illinois in June.

Students, teachers and even the principal at Rocky Point Middle School on Long Island recently added an intriguing chapter to their science education when they climbed inside the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s Discovering the Universe: Mobile Classroom. Eighth-grade science students and their teachers were welcomed into the theatricallylighted, futuristic interior of the 37-foot vehicle. There, Vanderbilt science educators showed them how to explore astronomy using the Classroom’s five, hands-on, interactive stations. Clowning It Up Minnesauke Elementary School students and staff members showcased their comedic sides as they sporting red noses for a worthy cause and took part in the first ever Red Nose Day, stateside. The event, which gained national attention this May, asks participants to wear the noses and donate funds to help lift children out

of poverty. The proceeds from the cause will be split between supporting programs in the US and supporting organizations helping children around the world. Fifth-grade students in Kate Hunter’s class coordinated the event at Minnesauke. Leading up to the project acted as humanitarian

ambassadors, creating and distributing materials to alert the school community of the big day. In addition to the community service aspect, the project also tied into the class’s curriculum. They learned about the areas affected by poverty through their social studies work and integrated mathematics into the donation drive.

Legacy Of Compassion Rocky Point Middle School students and staff members received a powerful message about the importance of kindness and compassion when the Rachel’s Challenge program visited the building. During the event, presenter Larry Scott spoke about the life and legacy of his niece – Rachel Scott, the first student-victim of the infamous 1999

Columbine High School tragedy. The program focused on Rachel’s acts of kindness and the contents of her diaries. Students viewed a video about Rachel’s life and the interwoven message designed to provoke positive change in the way others are treated. After the assembly, the students were encouraged to “take the challenge” and commit to leading a life rooted in

kindness and compassion. They documented this pledge on a large poster, to be displayed in the school. Members of the school’s “Friends of Rachel” club also participated in a separate training program. These students will be responsible for leading the charge, setting an example for their peers and assisting to coordinate various community service projects.

P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s National Junior Art Honor Society recently showcased their outstanding talents by working collaboratively to create the building’s sixth annual group mural. Each year the group,

which is advised by art teacher Mike Sacco, selects an individual of outstanding character to honor in a visual manner. This year the group chose Malala Yousafzai. The completed mural features pieces created

Two historically important books came to life for students in the Three Village Central School District as they participated in interactive, literacy based workshops this May. The Elementary Living Book Project brought together more than 100 of the district’s fifth-grade students for an interactive program surrounding the book Bull Run, by Paul Fleishchman. Teachers, staff members and outside presenters dressed in clothes of the Civil War

time period and guided the students through a memorable experience. Divided into two groups – representing the North and South – the students had the chance to visit stations focused on battlefield life, letter writing and wax stamping, quilt making and the underground railroad. The message of Ellie Wiesel’s Holocaust book, “Night,” resounded off the walls at Ward Melville High School as approximately 80 students participated in a workshop called “All Night

in a Day.” The students, who were from Tammy Catalfamo’s and Ira Sterne’s history classes and Andrew Pelosi’s Holocaust elective course, spent the day listened to a book reading and participating in various interdisciplinary workshops and activities. These included reading nonfiction pieces, viewing artwork, listening to a musical selection and discussing the role today’s society plays in preventing this type of event from reoccurring.

The first place winner of Suffolk County’s Bullying Awareness Music Video Contest was awarded to Jameson Wessels of Mt. Sinai for his music video titled “Why?”. Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker, along with local music celebrities, announced the winners of the contest at the Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School in Rocky Point on Monday, June 1st. Suffolk County students were invited to submit a music video entry to help raise awareness about bullying in schools. Jameson’s winning music video will be featured on www.suffolkstopbullying. org and he will be invited to perform his song at the 2015 Summer Concert Series. School superintendents, administrators and parents acknowledged and honored the highest achieving students of Suffolk County’s Class of 2015 during the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association’s 21st Annual Valedictorian Luncheon, held at the Hyatt Regency Wind Watch Hotel in Hauppauge. The celebratory event was punctuated with music provided by the Islip High School Jazz Ensemble, who performed under the direction of Steve Campanella. Congratulating the students on their hard work and academic achievements were Dr. Roberta A. Gerold, SCSSA president and Middle Country School District superintendent of schools; Susan A. Schnebel, SCSSA president-elect and Islip School District superintendent of schools; Dr. Charles T. Russo, SCSSA vice president and East Moriches School District superintendent

of schools; and Lars Clemensen, SCSSA secretary and Hampton Bays School District superintendent of schools. Keynote speaker Roger Tilles, a member of the New York State Board of Regents, encouraged the valedictorians to always put things in perspective, develop a backbone, become proactive and involved, use imagination and creativity to propel forward, and find a job that matters. “Love what you do and feel that it matters,” Tilles said. “There is no greater fun than that.” Each valedictorian was called to the stage to receive a certificate and gift of recognition. During their acknowledgment, the universities they plan on attending were announced, along with their intended majors. The impressive and prestigious list of schools included Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, Duke University, Fordham University, Harvard

University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Villanova University and Yale University. The SCSSA and its corporate partners also awarded 10 scholarships to graduates planning to pursue a career in education or social services. This was the only event in which the Class of 2015 valedictorians were honored together, and it was a truly memorable occasion for all in attendance.

The Power Of Friendship Spirits were high last Thursday when 25 fifth graders from Adrienne D’Onofrio’s Setauket Elementary school class enjoyed a farewell lunch at Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community. Over the course of the school year, the kids have partnered with Jefferson’s Ferry’s Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing residents, enjoying companionship, crafting, cooking, learning and fun. Well-loved by students and residents alike, the Intergenerational Program was conceived 10 years ago by Setauket Elementary teacher Ellen Young (now retired but still active in the program) with Jefferson Ferry Director of Therapeutic Recreation Jennifer Barrett. Generally a dozen or so residents engage with the children in small groups during monthly visits. “You can’t even imagine how much the children look forward to seeing the residents at our visits,” explains Ms. D’Onofrio. “It has really made an impact on both the students and the residents. Together they’ve written poems, played games, built candy houses, and cooked up a Thanksgiving feast. It’s been a great year.” “The students and the residents become very close over the course of the year,” says Jennifer Barrett. “We attended the school’s talent show and the kids ended up cheering for us. It made our residents feel loved and very

special. We’ve also had numerous students return over the years, either to visit their friends or give community service. It’s very gratifying and a win-win for everyone.” The farewell luncheon is always an emotional and memorable event with barely a dry eye among the adults in attendance. The children get all dressed up, parents are invited, and a lunch is served in the rotunda at

Today Mary lives in Skilled Nursing, but pilots her electric power chair to keep up with her young friends. She’s helped to plant flowers with the children, baked with them, attended their talent shows and told them her stories. As the oldest of 13 children, Mary spent most of her life first tending to her siblings and then her own children. Joining Mary in the Jefferson’s Ferry’s main building. This year the children program are residents Giselle McGann, Dorothy Catania, read aloud letters to the residents and performed Randy Jim Ardolino, David Wooster, Nina Sloan, Betty Bangert Newman’s song, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” and Lisa Goldschmidt. Carasiti Elementary School in the Rocky Point School District teamed up to create care packages for deployed and injured soldiers. During the project, which they called “Lunch

Bags of Love,” the students wrote letters to the soldiers, thanking them for sacrifices made for their country, and decorated paper lunch bags with patriotic themes. The lovingly designed packages were then stuffed with treats, card games, toiletries and other supplies before being boxed up for shipment. Several local veterans, parents and Councilwoman Jane

Dinarae Camarda’s WellFit Physical Education classes took turns blending smoothies with the bicyclepowered blender, which was provided to the class by Whole Foods of Lake

Scholarship Recipients The Long Island-based credit union NEFCU has awarded 82 students from high schools across Long Island each with a $500 voucher to use toward their college education, as part of its annual Making a Difference Scholarship program. In total, NEFCU granted $41,000 to graduating seniors from local high schools across Long Island. The individual winners will be announced in June at their respective high

school’s scholarship award ceremonies. Each participating high school’s guidance department selected one graduating senior of its choice based on a minimum four-year average of 90%, as well as service to his or her community and school. Since the Making a Difference Scholarship program’s inception more than 10 years ago, NEFCU has awarded more than $1,000,000 to Long Island high school and college

students. In addition to meeting the academic qualifications and outstanding service to both their school and their community, each student must attend a two- or four-year college or university after graduating this spring. Winners of the Making a Difference High School Scholarship are eligible to apply for NEFCU’s Premier Making a Difference Scholarship, a $20,000 scholarship (paid

over four years) offered to recipients of NEFCU’s High School and Family Scholarships to help fund their college education. NEFCU also offers several other scholarships for undergraduate and graduate college students. “Promoting higher education is such an important part of our community outreach, and it gives us such great pride to help so many local Long Island students achieve this goal,” said Valerie Garguilo, vice

president of marketing and community relations for NEFCU. “Our Making a Difference Scholarship program is a great way for us to foster college education and reward those deserving students who have worked so hard in school.” This year’s applications were open to nearly all Long Island high schools. Out of the 82 participating high schools, 23 are located in Suffolk County and 59 are located in Nassau County.
