On Sunday, May 21st, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Generations Choral Festival hosted by the Mount Sinai High School Choir. The event, sponsored by the Mount Sinai Friends of the Arts, brought together the Mount Sinai Choir led by conductor Eric Blatt, the Smithtown East Concert Choir lead by conductor Mark Hegreness, the Albany High School Select Chorus
led by conductor Brendan Hoffman, the Alumni Choir led by conductor Kristen Acker-Morrow, and the Mass Choir led by conductor Dr. Jonathan Babcock for an afternoon of musical entertainment. At the festival, Legislator Anker presented certificates of achievement to the members of the Mount Sinai High School Choir for winning first place in the WorldStrides Music Festival in Williamsburg, VA. FIREFIGHTER HONORED - Brookhaven Town Councilman Dan Panico and his colleagues on the Town Board recently honored Manorville Volunteer Firefighter Matthew Thomas for his part in saving the life of a man who was in cardiac arrest in a restaurant in Ireland, where Mr. Thomas was vacationing this past April. Earl L. Vandermeulen High School sophomore Josh Gelfond will be spending his summer researching alternative energy at Stony Brook University as part of the Reuter Research Group. Gelfond was selected for the program following a recommendation from a Stony Brook graduate student who he has been working with as part of his regular studies. “I am really looking forward to applying what I
have been learning in class to the real world,” said Gelfond. “It will be a great experience.” Through the Stony Brook program, Gelfond will work closely with Stony Brook professor Dr. Mathew Reuter of the Institute for Advanced Computational Science at Stony Brook, and graduate students and Ph.D. students in a lab setting. As the only high school student accepted to the program, Gelfond
will assist in developing mathematical modeling and computational and statistical analysis of experimental research data related to the conductivity and movements of molecules and electrons through matter. When not studying, Gelfond plays varsity tennis where he has earned an All-County title and golf. He is also a member of his school’s Mathletes team. He intends to study applied mathematics in college.

For quite a while now I tried to figure out What love, admiration and spells are about. Powers of a psyche are mine from time to time Most often when cupid his bells lets chime. I actually feel the thoughts of people dear to me Without being told, their deepest concerns I see. Spells are vibrant declarations of a nameless force They have in a chosen media their source. Onto my open umbrella those spells often fall Slowly one by one to the ground they roll. I don’t want them to get me into their grip I am afraid that into obsession I might slip. Yet, at times I succumb and those powers use I do with you, infatuation is my excuse! Any and all caution is thrown out to hell I close the umbrella and submit to the spell!

Over the course of three sessions, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School seniors learned about the dangers of distracted driving through a Stony Brook University program. During the sessions, the students heard from speakers, watched an informational
video and took part in interactive activities, including attempting to walk while distracted by their phones and driving using a driving simulator. “The goal of the program is to emphasize to students the importance of paying attention to the road while driving and to recognize

R.C. Murphy Junior High School students Claire Yang, Matthew Chen, Animesh Ghose, Neil Mehta and Jessica Liao recently placed third in the state at the 2017 MoMathlon Tournament of Champions at the National Museum of Mathematics, also known as MoMath Museum, in New York City.
During the event, which was supported and sponsored by Con Edison and Brookhaven National Laboratory, the top 10 middle school teams in New York State competed in four challenging rounds – Individual, Team, Mixed team and Team Relay – to solve challenging mathematical questions,
all without the use of a calculator. “The students had a great time not only competing but also working and meeting kids across New York and exploring the MoMath museum, which for most of them was the first time,” said Murphy mathematics chairperson Rocco Vetro.
Volunteers Needed
Family Service League (FSL), a Long Island based non-profit human service organization, is seeking volunteers to train as advocates for our Long Island Seniors living in nursing homes and long term adult care homes throughout Suffolk County. A certified Ombudsman is a special volunteer who works with the residents to resolve complaints and concerns. The goal of the program is to protect the health, safety, welfare and rights of the residents in long term care facilities. FSL offers initial training classes, ongoing supervision and continuing education for all volunteer candidates. Shining Stars to each member of the school community on a day they called “Stars for S.T.A.R.S.” The stars were created to symbolize how each individual is unique, special and important and everyone wearing them together is a reflection of how they are unified as a community. Additionally, as a lasting gift for the sixth grade, the NJAHS helped create a S.T.A.R.S. theme mural in
the style of graffiti artist Keith Haring. The students glazed the tiles that border the large display and painted the main subjects in the mural. Each sixthgrader was then able to add a memory they had from Minnesauke to the mural’s tile background. Minnesauke’s S.T.A.R. program stands for sharing, trustworthy, accepting, respectful and serving.

A Time to Remember

My alma mater, Lindy High School, recently held its senior prom last week, bringing to mind my own end-of-year soirees which took place so many years ago. Our senior prom was, of course, a highlight; even more so for the fact that it was held at the top of the World Trade Center, at the one and only Windows on the World. What a magical night it was, and what an unforgettable time we had celebrating among the clouds, overlooking the greatest city in the world. Often forgotten in the recollections of high school, however, was the equally memorable evening we had at our junior prom. Held at the famed Narragansett Inn, it brought the elegance of our first “real” dance to our hometown, complete with swirling gowns and high heels, and hair and makeup appointments for all on the afternoon of the big event. Remember, at this point,
sweet sixteen’s had yet to take on the extravagance of a small wedding, and proms truly were the formal affairs of the age. Everything down to the smallest detail was coordinated, from corsage colors to jewelry and accessories, to the tiny flowers and rhinestone clips which adorned many of the girls’ hair. The class voted on their pick for “Junior Prom Song” in the weeks leading up to the event, forgoing the more current hits for a classic from Long Island’s own Billy Joel, “This is the Time.” I remember taking pictures beforehand at my grandparents’ house, walking down the big staircase and masquerading in all sorts of corny poses for the camera. This, of course, predated the advent of cell phones and the notorious “selfies” of today; but every single collection of friends had the same standard photo in front of their limo, couples angled inward, corsages on display.
There was something elegant in the simplicity. Junior prom was a bit more casual for our group. Instead of a limo, we carpooled. Instead of any post-prom festivities, we stopped off at McDonald’s on the way home – in the excitement of the evening, it seems no one had really taken the time to sit down and eat. We were too busy taking photos by the grand piano in the lobby, cheering on the prom court…and dancing, of course. I remember coming home that night and sitting up for hours, recollecting every last detail of the evening to my parents, still in my gown and high heels, my hair a little disheveled but none the worse for wear, not wanting the day to end. Sure, senior prom may have had the pomp and circumstance and the expectation of great things; but junior prom, for me, far exceeded all that. It was, truly the time to remember.

Setauket Elementary School was blanketed with individuals donning red noses this May as the school community came together to raise funds and awareness for two important causes. As part of the building’s sprit week celebration, individuals donated $2 to purchase a red nose and help make a difference in
the lives of children. As a result of the building’s generosity, Setauket raised close to $800 to benefit Room4Love and national Red Nose Day. Room4Love is an organization founded by two former Setauket students and their parents that raises money to remodel bedrooms of children that are diagnosed
with cancer. Red Nose Day is an initiative aimed at ensuring that children are safe, healthy, educated and empowered in all 50 states as well as in many countries most in need in Latin America, Asia and Africa. The schoolwide initiative was organized by the Setauket Student Council.

ABSTRACT ART TRIP - Edna Louise Spear Elementary School fifth-grade art students recently visited the East Hampton home and art studio of famous abstract artists Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner. While on the field trip, they also toured the LongHouse Reserve, a 16-acre reserve and sculpture garden, featuring the works of Buckminster Fuller, Dale Chihuly, Yoko Ono and Willem de Kooning. National Recognition
In recognition of its outstanding commitment to music education, the Miller Place School District was recently honored by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation with the NAMM 2017 Best Communities for Music Education award. Only four percent of school districts nationwide received the prestigious award in 2017. The honor comes as a result of the outstanding efforts of Miller Place teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders to ensure access to music learning for all students as part of the school curriculum. “As part of our dedication to educating the whole child, the Miller Place School District provides every student with a robust fine arts curriculum, including music, art and drama,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marianne Cartisano. “We are honored to receive this designation from the NAMM foundation. It is a well-deserved tribute to
the dedication, diligence, passion and excellence of our students, our music department and our community.” In addition to providing daily music education on the elementary, middle and high school level, the District’s music department provides frequent opportunities for students to perform as well as innovative lessons that go beyond the classroom. Students perform in concerts, plays and recitals for classmates throughout the year. The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify for the distinction, the Miller Place School District answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs.
Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. “Music education is vital to our students’ growth into well-rounded individuals, scholars and good citizens,” said Miller Place High School Instrumental Band Director Patricia Isenberg. “A strong musical background supports students’ creative problem solving abilities and teamwork while providing the skills necessary to excel both inside and outside the classroom.” The NAMM Foundation is a non-profit supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and its 9,000 members around the world. The NAMM Foundation works to advance active participation in music making across the lifespan by supporting scientific research, philanthropic giving and public service programs.

A lien is “a legal right to the vehicle by a third party to ensure the repayment of a debt or other financial
obligation.” This is a larger issue than many people realize. According to researchers from the Federal Reserve Bank, about 6 million Americans are at least 90 days late on their payments. If you buy a vehicle with a lien on its title, you become legally obligated to pay off the debts. The lien can also prevent you from registering the car until the lien is paid off.

Strength is Key In an effort to continue a mission to spread hope, help and strength through the halls of the Earl L Vandermeulen High School, seven members of the high school Sources of Strength group trained incoming freshman as peer leaders. During the 90-minute training, held on May 26th, 22 eighth-graders participated in group activities that were planned by the high school students and included powerful messages. Corrine Scannell, Billy Scannell,
Samantha Acampora, Ava Schully, Matt Pifko, David Moir and Alexa Wakefield were the peer leaders. “The seven Sources of Strength students spent a lot of thoughtful time and energy designing inclusive activities that made the eighth-graders feel comfortable to share while also creating an environment of trust and openness,” said Port Jefferson School District social worker Kristin Britt. Ms. Britt advises the program along with guidance counselors Kerri
Neligon and Kathi Galvin and school psychologist Kristen Wendel. The eighth-grade participants were nominated for the training by their teachers. Nominations were based on which students could provide support to their peers should they need support during difficult times. “They are considered the connectors between their peers and trusted adults within the school,” said Britt.

Sheriffs Memorial
John Becker, President of the Deputy Sheriff’s Police Benevolent Association, and also featured Louis Viscusi, President of the Suffolk County Corrections Officers’ Association. Looked on by the attendees in a somber ceremony, each of the 70 members of the Sheriff’s Office and Department of Corrections died in the line of duty between 1887 and 2013 had a bell rung in their memory. Wreaths were subsequently placed on the memorial and a
benediction was given by Deacon James P. McLaughlin. “I am thankful for the sacrifices that our Deputy Sheriffs and Corrections Officers make every day, seventy men have died in the line of duty since 1887,” Legislator Kennedy stated. “I hope that these seventy men and woman continue to remind us of the sacrifices that law enforcement officers make daily to keep us safe, and I pray that this list will never grow longer.”

Amidst the pomp and circumstance of a full color guard, Northwell Health’s leadership gathered with veterans, health system leadership and high-ranking military officials to honor members of the military, recognize their sacrifice and hear from a retired Marine who lost a leg while serving in Afghanistan. Dan Lasko, a U.S. Marine veteran who worked with Northwell innovators and scientists to create “The Fin” prosthetic, shared his personal story of loss and triumph. Cpl. Lasko, who “raised his right hand to serve” on September 10, 2001, was deployed to Afghanistan in 2004. Less than one month after arriving in country, Cpl. Lasko’s vehicle was hit by two improvised explosive devices. Cpl. Lasko survived the attack, but the resulting wounds meant a below-theknee amputation of his left leg “Back in 2005, I discovered that sports played a huge part in my recovery,” said Cpl. Lasko. “I was able to run and play sports, but I realized that I needed an aqua prosthetic. It’s difficult to have one leg for walking and then have to change legs to enter the water. I wanted one leg that would allow me to walk, enter the water smoothly, and then propel myself forward.” When he learned that Northwell was looking for a veteran who would help with the design of a prosthetic device to meet these requirements, Cpl. Lasko volunteered for service. Working with Northwell Ventures, 3D printing researcher Todd Goldstein, PhD, and two Long Island companies, Eschen Prosthetic and Orthotic Laboratories and CPC (Composite Protyping Center), “The Fin” was developed – and Cpl. Lasko is delighted. His greatest pleasure, he said, is teaching his two young sons how to swim and to play with them in the water. “I don’t want my disabilities to hold my kids back from
enjoying their lives,” he said. Northwell Health has worked tirelessly to address the issues facing returning veterans and their families for more than a decade, serving as both a treatment provider for veterans and their families, and as a major employer of veterans that recognizes the value they bring to their jobs. Juan Serrano, director of Northwell’s Office of Military and Veterans’ Liaison Services and a fellow veteran of foreign conflict, spoke to the importance of providing tangible commitments to those who serve. “Northwell
has made a pledge to veterans that we take very seriously,” said Mr. Serrano. “Whether it’s helping them get back to work, learning important job training skills, or finding the right medical or behavioral health help, our message is clear – no veteran should ever be left behind. We take this very seriously, and we will continue to support our military heroes.” As part of that ongoing pledge, for the seventh consecutive year, Northwell President and CEO

Honoring Those Who Served Michael J. Dowling presented two veterans with checks representing the difference between their military pay and the regular salaries they would have received had they not taken military leave from their jobs at Northwell Health. Recipients were: Perry Alexander, of the Bronx, a clinical lab technician at Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park who was a logistic specialist in the Marines for three years, and Jovani Vega, of Queens Village, a patient care associate at LIJ who spent two years as an MP in the US Army. The initiative recognizes the financial sacrifice veterans and their families make and helps returning veterans reintegrate to civilian life. Since the program’s inception, Northwell employees deployed to military service have received financial rewards totaling more than $1.6 million. Also on hand to recognize Northwell’s commitment to the health and welfare of returning veterans were: Col. James McDonough, managing director of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families; and Lt. Gen. Joseph Anderson, deputy chief of staff, US Army. Mr. Dowling acknowledged the hard work and sacrifices made by our military personnel and their loved ones. “I don’t think we do enough for veterans,” he said. “And, I don’t think we appreciate their sacrifices enough. They serve as an example to all of us, and that is to show the same level of compassion and teamwork as they do.” By way of illustrating Northwell’s commitment to veterans, Mr. Dowling pointed out that the health system hired 220 veterans in 2015; that number increased to 417 in 2016. “We hope to have that number jump to 1,000 very soon,” he added.
