National Recognition Received In recognition of its outstanding commitment to music education, the Miller Place School District was recently honored by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation with the NAMM 2018 Best Communities for Music Education Award. This is the third consecutive year the District has received this award. Less than 10 percent of school districts nationwide received the prestigious award in 2018. The honor comes as a result of the outstanding efforts of Miller Place teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders to ensure access to music learning for all students as part of the school curriculum. “We are honored to receive this designation from the NAMM foundation for the third year in a row,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marianne Cartisano. “Our artistic
faculty pours hours of dedication and talent into creating and building upon the District’s outstanding fine arts curriculum, including music, art and drama. This recognition is a well-deserved tribute to the dedication, diligence, passion and excellence of our students, our music department and our community.” In addition to providing daily music education on the elementary, middle and high school level, the District’s music department provides frequent opportunities for students to perform as well as innovative lessons that go beyond the classroom. Students perform in concerts, plays and recitals for classmates throughout the year. The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music
access and education to all students. To qualify for the distinction, the Miller Place School District answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. “Music education is an essential part of our students’ growth into well-rounded individuals, scholars and good citizens,” said Miller Place High School Principal Kevin Slavin. “A strong musical background supports students’ creative problem solving abilities and teamwork while providing the skills necessary to excel both inside and outside the

engineering science and electrical engineering at Suffolk County Community College. During the visit, the students viewed items created using a 3D printer and learned how the device can be used to print just about anything. Additionally, the students
saw two of Mr. Maritato’s robots perform various tasks and activities, including dancing. Throughout his presentation, Mr. Maritato encouraged the students to always use their imagination and stressed the importance of studying the STEM subjects.

BROADWAY COMES TO BABYLON: The Argyle Theatre

For several years, the movie theater on Main Street in Babylon Village sat with its glasspaned doors papered over with posters from its final showings, grimly pinpointing the exact moment in time those doors had shut. Last month, those posters came down, and the doors opened to Long Island’s newest and largest year-round professional equity theatre, bringing new light and color to the classic streets of Babylon Village as the stunning Argyle Theatre. Operating in a town full of old New York charm like Babylon, Mark and Dylan Perlman, the father/son owners of the venue, could think of no better show with which to kick
off their inaugural season than Guys and Dolls, sponsored by Forerunner Technologies, Inc. The classic musical by Loesser, Swerling & Burrows builds highstakes tension and love between the high-stakes gamblers and other colorful characters created by New York writer Damon Runyon. As the show opens with the song named in tribute, Runyonland, the lights come up on a truly entertaining evening of song and dance. In this production, the Argyle has built a true gem. With the stage filled with thousands of light bulbs, the only thing that shines brighter than the scenery - which mimics the streets of old Broadway - are the performances of their professional actors pulled fresh from the streets of NEW Broadway. Getting to this point was no mean feat for the Perlman family, who have put several millions of dollars and countless late-evening hours into the project. But if you talk to them, their passion for and commitment to the performing arts is infectious, which no doubt contributed to their ability to surround themselves with a hardworking team of
seasoned professionals both for their in-house Argyle keeps moving east through Europe for staff, and for the production teams hired for Spring Awakening, catching a glimpse into the torments and explorations of youth in their individual productions. drawing to a close, vacation plans are in the works, and everyone seems in desperate need of some sort of reprieve from the daily grind. I recently took a vacation day to bookend the Memorial Day weekend, creating a four-day spread of time to decompress and reset. My mission was to fill every moment with something either enjoyable or productive, a noble pursuit if ever there was one, however unrealistic it might be. The trouble with sustaining that type of schedule, even when it revolves around leisure activities, is the inevitable downward spiral into exhaustion. Being productive is hard work. And with that, the many lists of things to accomplish, some
stare back from the page, some expanded upon and added to as the months have progressed. The fact is, there is always more work to be done, always some aspect of life to improve upon, an avenue of growth to explore. Summer, for all its heat and humidity, has always been the season for such exploration to me, in the most literal of senses. From long walks into the uninhabited neighborhoods of Fire Island, to stumbling upon tiny treasures of sand and foliage along the shores that we call home, searching for that perfect photo op, that moment of tranquility when nature takes over and responsibilities vanish into the haze. The key, of course, is to take a piece - however small a slice - of that feeling, that
a sunrise, the ocean crashing along the shore… Perhaps we should dispense with our lists altogether. Who says what is written is more important than what is not? Maybe those “tasks” we have yet to document are the most crucial of all. It might just follow that all these selfimposed responsibilities do not hold nearly the significance we place on them. Those who appear to embody the greatest inner peace seem to glide through life without a care in the world - and what’s wrong with that? And so, we begin yet another month, a bit older and hopefully wiser as we set sail into summer. May the warmth of the sun radiate upon you. Eventually. Maybe by July.

Education Event NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum recently partnered with National Grid to host a Memorial Day education event for 100 local students from Roosevelt Middle School at the Veterans Memorial located on the plaza of NYCB LIVE. With the support of local Long Island veterans and active duty military, the Roosevelt Middle School students had the opportunity to learn about the branches of the military and Long Island’s service contributions to the United States armed forces. The Memorial Day education event was a part of the venue’s new community platform NYCB LIVE Cares, which harnesses the power of sports and entertainment to make an impact in the Long Island community. “The Coliseum serves as
a symbol and pays tribute to those who have sacrificed so much for our country,” said Josh Pruss, Senior Vice President of Global Partnerships for Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment. “We are proud to work with National Grid on this important event. By introducing local youth to our veterans, we are able to keep their incredible stories alive and honor their commitment to our community and our country.” During the event, students had the opportunity to visit with the different branches of the military and learn more from active duty service members. Students also sat with local veterans to hear their stories and together created Memorial Day wreaths to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Groups participating in the event included Army

The Next Generation Knowing that students need the skills to be prepared for the future in a technology-driven world, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School librarian Selinda Stout set out on a mission to introduce all K-5 students to block coding in the school library. For her efforts, she has been named a Sunburst Digital Innovator. Stout wrote a case study for the educational curriculum software company on the implementation of the Dot and Dash robots in the school library. She first discussed with her students many different types of
robots. Her next step was a collaborative project with music teacher Lisa Scrom, where students wrote their own compositions and then used iPads to program the robots in the library to perform their original songs. Her culminating project was a March Madness Basketball Challenge. Using coding concepts the students learned, they investigated how distance and energy affected the launchers’ aim and competed against one another where the robots actually shot hoops. She also created surveys for the students to share their experience with
these powerful and playful tools that served as an introduction to computer science. “We are so proud of Ms. Stout for the work she has accomplished with robotics and coding for our elementary students,” said Jessica Schmettan, the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. “These type of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) opportunities help our students develop critical 21st-century skills which directly align with the district’s digital literacy goals.”

Cupcake Wars Ward Melville High School’s spring semester gourmet foods classes recently showcased their creativity as they took part in this year’s Cupcake Wars competition. This semester’s themes were fantasy and garden for first period and under the sea for second and third period. Students
worked during the course of a week to prepare everything from fondant mermaid tails to aliens and planets. On the day of the competition, judges walked around each display, talked with students about the displays and sampled the cupcakes. The winners this semester were Victoria
Prinzo for her Alice in Wonderland display (period 1), the Yellow Kitchen for their Underwater display (period 2), and Green Kitchen for their Poseidon display (period 3). All judges commended students for their outstanding efforts and students certainly enjoyed tasting the results from their projects.

Councilwoman Jane Bonner has announced that the Town of Brookhaven will co-sponsor the 4th annual Jake Engel “Hoops for Hope Barbecue” basketball tournament at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai on Friday, July 13th, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The fundraiser is a barbecue and friendly basketball tournament designed to bring together a community that has been hit hard by the heroin epidemic, to raise money
for a scholarship in Jake Engel’s name, and to raise money for Hope House Ministries. The fundraiser was established in 2015 after Jake Engel’s death from a heroin overdose. The event is free to all and includes a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, barbeque style food, games, raffles and music. Councilwoman Bonner said, “The opioid epidemic is still growing and destroying so many lives in our community. The Engel

They documented their findings – in such areas as advancements the society made, important dates, political, technological or cultural achievements, religion and cause for decline – on a large paper drawing of a person depicting those from the
regions. The completed projects were on display throughout the classrooms and nearby hallways. The students then completed a cumulative writing piece to answer two of five questions related to the study as well as compared and contrasted two societies.

STREET RENAMING - On Saturday, May 27th, Congressman Lee Zeldin joined Riverhead Town elected officials, Riverhead residents and the friends and family of Tech Sgt. Dashan Briggs in honoring him with a street forever named in his memory. Tech Sgt. The Association for Mental Health & Wellness
The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization here on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries! If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this nonprofit that believes mental health is
as important as physical health at 631.226.3900. They strive to ensure that all their local needs and voices are not only heard, but also recognized by government leaders, the business community, advocacy groups and educational organizations in our region! If you are interested in volunteering with MHAW, you can. Volunteer opportunities are available each Saturday at their Chemical Free Garden in Ronkonkoma. The Garden consists of 23 raised beds of organically grown veggies and herbs, as well as berry bushes, grape vines and more. The produce from their Garden provides lunches for the adults in their programs and helps them stock Charlotte’s Table Food Pantry, which offers community members in need fresh and healthy options. On May 22nd, Councilwoman Jane Bonner joined volunteers from the Coastal Steward Long Island and the Ward Melville High School Fishing Club to clean up the Town of Brookhaven right of way at Landing Road in Miller Place. The two groups removed 7720
lbs. of debris which was carted away by the Town’s Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management. Pictured to the left of Councilwoman Bonner is Coastal Steward Long Island Treasurer Mark Campo, who helped to organize the clean-up. Councilwoman Bonner
said, “Our North Shore beaches are some of the most beautiful on Long Island and I thank the volunteers who took the time to help clean up in anticipation of the summer season. Their concern for the environment sets a great example for all others to follow.”
Food Drive for Veterans Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio announced today that Brookhaven Town’s Division of Veterans Services will be holding a food drive for veterans in need from Monday, June 11th through Friday, June 29th. Last year’s food drive provided more than 300 bags of food to veterans and their families, and was so successful that the Town decided to make it an annual drive. The Division of Veterans Service will once again work with local Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) representatives to distribute the donations directly to veterans and their families. Supervisor Romaine said, “Brookhaven Town is home to veterans who have selflessly and courageously served our country. Many of them need assistance, and when provided with an opportunity, Brookhaven residents always rise to
the occasion to help our neighbors in need. I want to thank the Division of Veterans Services and our local VFW representatives for working together to organize this initiative.” Councilman Michael Loguercio, the Town Board Liaison to the Division of Veterans Services said, “Brookhaven veterans and their families have sacrificed so much, and it is very gratifying to know this drive will provide them with some muchneeded relief. Chemistry Honors
Earl L. Vandermeulen 11th-grade student Sinan Ates was among the best and the brightest high school chemistry students who were honored by the American Chemical Society. His honor for outstanding scholastic achievement was presented
at a dinner and reception at Nassau Community College and recognized students from Nassau, Queens and Suffolk counties. After a presentation by Dr. Gene Hall of Rutgers University on forensic analytical chemistry, Sinan
was presented with a plaque by Dr. Joseph Serafin, chair of the American Chemical Society’s New York section, and Dr. Adejare Adeniran, chair of the American Chemical Society’s Long Island subsection. For his accolades, Sinan had kind words to share about his high school teacher Michel Krivosta, noting that she is a great chemistry teacher; taking a subject and making it interesting so that the whole class pays full attention. She, in turn, had this to say: “Sinan is one of those students who really grasps the concepts of what he learns in the classroom. He is very deserving of the honor.”
Ensemble Selection Four Port Jefferson Middle School students who benefit from the school’s music program were accepted for the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York. They performed recently on one of the world’s most well-known stages: Carnegie Hall. Sixth-grader Chloe Pipia was selected to the Suffolk
Treble Choir, seventhgrader Sophie Blumenthal and eighth-grader David Lawler were selected to the Suffolk Concert Orchestra on oboe and viola, respectively, and seventhgrader Kenneth DixonLanza was selected to the Suffolk Concert Choir. Sophie and David had to audition for the orchestra with a New
York State School Music Association level 4 or 5 solo on their instruments while Chloe and Kenneth auditioned for the choirs by demonstrating vocal technique and range with their NYSSMA solos. “It was a beautiful theater,” Sophie said, “and an exciting opportunity to be a part of the experience.”

STEM and Skating Port Jefferson Middle School students had a unique educational experience in which they learned how the concepts of science, technology, engineering and math connect to many parts of everyday life. Sixth-graders took a STEM field trip to the United Skates of America in Seaford and attended a lesson and hands-on activities that directly related to what they
are learning in their classroom. Following the lesson, they roller skated and continued to grasp laws of motion and other aspects of physics. The students also measured and calculated speeds of themselves running and skating and also used mean, median and mode to compare their roller skate sizes. “I was really impressed with the students’ knowledge of the different
STEM ‘superstars,’” said math teacher Megan Ryan, referring to historic and contemporary dignitaries in the STEM field such as Albert Einstein, Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking and Steve Jobs. “The lessons we participated in were great ways to connect math to real life; and [of the roller skating] it was fun to watch so many students do something they had never done before!”

Services Held
On Monday, May 28th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Middle Island Civic Association Memorial Day services at Bartlett Pond Park in Middle Island, and the Sound Beach Civic Association Memorial Days services at the Veterans Memorial Park in Sound Beach.
Both services included music and prayer, local scout troops, the fire departments, and other elected officials to join in commemorating the servicemen and women who have sacrificed their lives to protect our freedom. “I commend the local community for
its commitment to memorializing our fallen heroes. We owe so much to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” said Legislator Anker. “Thank you to all of the community leaders and groups who work hard to host these peaceful and commemorative events every year.”
All Three Village Central School District string players – more than 300 in total – participated in a “electrify your strings” program alongside international recording artist and electric violinist Mark Wood. During the two-day
program, which was sponsored by the district’s music department, Mr. Wood worked directly with the students to design a tailor made rock orchestra program. The workshop culminated in a live performance at Ward Melville High School.
Electrify Your Strings is a music education phenomenon that introduced students to a whole new world of expressing themselves as musicians, and give them a life changing experience they will never forget.

Nassakeag and Minnesauke elementary school fifth-grade students in the Three Village Central School District have been learning about the circulatory system as part of a recent health education unit of study. With the guidance of their health teacher Kerry Diana, the students explored the circulatory system through their
senses during health class. Visually, they experienced the look of the heart muscle and its chambers using an actual calf heart, while also seeing the movement of their pulse with student created Marshmallow Pulse Meters. Through sound they are listening to the lub-dub of their own heart using Littmann stethoscopes and hearing
the sound of a partners’ lungs inhaling the oxygen that will get supplied to the blood for circulation. In addition, they learned how to feel both their radial and carotid pulse points and were challenged to observe and assess the changes in their pulse rate during different levels of activity.

Market Day Opens
In order to broaden their understanding of economic concepts, the students in Donna Trapani’s fifthgrade class at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School in the Rocky Point School District were assigned a project where they had to create a business and
design a product to sell to their classmates. Students engaged in market research, submitted business plans with expense reports, went into production and developed marketing plans. The culmination of the project was the simulation
of a marketplace during “Market Day.” Their ultimate goal was to make the largest profit possible. Students were really invested in this hands-on activity and utilized their “business smarts” to beat out their competition.

Master Dance Class Dance students at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts had the pleasure of taking a class led by world-renowned dancer, choreographer and teacher Anabella Lenzu. The master class program is part of the school’s ongoing mission to provide its dance students with an inside look at the industries they are pursuing, and to introduce them to mentors within their chosen field. Originally from
Argentina, Ms. Lenzu has more than 25 years of experience working in Argentina, Chile, Italy and the USA. As artistic director of Anabella Lenzu/ DanceDrama, she draws on her diverse background to create thought-provoking and socially-conscious dance theatre in the interest of improving the human condition. Ms. Lenzu instructed the students to listen to the choreography she has created, but to interpret it

Mermaid Parade Set Join for the 36th Annual Mermaid Parade, Saturday June 16th. The parade kicks off at 1 p.m. on West 21st and Surf Avenue and proceeds on Surf Avenue to West 10th, then heads south to the Boardwalk and then west back to its ending point at Steeplechase Plaza on the Boardwalk. The Mermaid Parade is a unique and artistic celebration of ancient mythology and the honkytonk seaside ritual that
attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the amusement district. The parade features marching bands, drill teams, floats, antique cars and some 1,500 participants dressed in hand-made costume of mermaids, sea creatures, amusement rides and Neptunes. It is the largest art parade in the nation and the largest event of the year in Coney Island. The o-fish-al beer of the Parade will be flowing all
day. Mermaid Pilsner will be available straight from the source at Coney Island Brewery, and at bars and restaurants throughout the Coney Island neighborhood! “We are very excited to have Amanda Palmer & Neil Gaiman lead the parade, as this years Queen Mermaid & King Neptune” Parade and Coney Island USA Founder Dick Zigun said. “And, we are thrilled to have our good friends at
the Coney Island Brewery as presenter and Kitchen 21 as our co-presenter.” According to tradition, Queen Mermaid and King Neptune will be wheeled through the parade in an antique wicker Boardwalk Rolling Chair that dates back to 1923. Immediately after the parade, at approximately 4 p.m., Dick Zigun, leads the King and Queen procession through MCU Parking lot (19th and Surf Avenue) to
the beach, for the official Beach Ceremony and opening of the ocean for the summer swimming season.
