A Lesson Of Historical Importance Three Village Central School District’s W.S. Mount and Nassakeag Elementary School sixth grade students had the honor of learning about one of the world’s darkest times when Ms. Ruth Minsky Sender shared her story of being a Holocaust survivor. Ms. Minsky Sender described how the dreams

she had for her future came to a halt following the German invasion of Poland, where she was born. The heart-wrenching stories she shared – from the loss of her family to the day her oldest friend became a Nazi soldier – painted a clear picture of this devastating part of the history that the students had been studying

in class. Additionally, she reflected on many of the stories documented in her memoirs, one of which many of the students had read. The students in both schools had read Ms. Minsky Sender’s memoir prior to her visit.

While speaking with Robyn, she shared a great story about a routine visit with her dental hygienist, Sue. Sue was explaining how arthritis was really becoming a problem in her hands. After a short discussion with Sue, Robyn challenged her to cut out all dairy for a month. After only a few days Sue called Robyn to share she was already having less pain and was now fully committed to making it through the dairy-free month. Through the month Sue made a few appointments with Robyn and made a few other small changes to her diet. Not long after that first month Sue’s arthritic pains were gone, she lost 30 pounds, reduced her bad cholesterol and her blood pressure normalized. All welcomed benefits but completely unexpected by Sue, although Robyn

Setauket Elementary School fourth grade classes learned about the masters of poetry during a special visit from New York State Education Department Regent Roger Tilles. Visiting each of the classes individually, Mr. Tilles spoke about how he developed a love for poetry at a young age and enjoyed sharing poems with his children when they were growing up. Among the poems that he shared were some of the famous pieces written by Shel Silverstein and he taught the students a special poem to share with their families.

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School is proud to announce that seniors Annalisa Welinder and Ava Schully have been named the Class of 2019 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Annalisa has an impressive and diversified high school résumé, that includes taking eight honors and 12 Advanced Placement courses and one college-level class. She is an Advanced Placement Scholar, a Presidential Scholars Program nominee and a National Latin Exam fourtime gold medalist. She serves as president of the Latin Club, is a member of Mathletes and the school’s Academic Team. Annalisa is also a member of both the track team and tennis team. Annalisa’s musical achievements are also exceptional and she is applauded by the school community for her many accomplishments. A violinist, she is a member of the prestigious National Youth Orchestra, where she served as a concertmaster in 2017, traveling to numerous concert halls, including Carnegie Hall. She and her brother have run a summer music camp – Sound Strings Long Island – for all age levels and she is a frequent award winner for various violin competitions. Annalisa is

also interested in creative writing endeavors. Asked for some words of wisdom to share with future graduates of the school, Annalisa had an uncomplicated and masterly response. “Everything seems easier and more doable if you enjoy it,” she said. Annalisa is excited to enter the freshman class at Stanford University in September. Ava Schully is proud and humbled by her accomplishment as salutatorian of the Class of 2019. She commended her family, peers and teachers who have helped her succeed in school and other aspects of her life. Ava’s list of achievements is comprehensive and includes taking 10 AP courses, four honors courses and two collegelevel courses. She was on the school’s soccer team in ninth grade and has run on both the school’s track team and cross-country team. She is a member of the Peer Leadership, Interact, Drama and Latin clubs as well as a member of Tri-M Honor Society, Honor Society and Sources of Strength. Ava took a service trip to Peru to help build a clean water system for local people, attended a six-week intensive study of classical music at the Interlochen Arts Camp in

Michigan, took part in the Philadelphia International Music Festival and recently performed on cello in the National Association for Music Education All-Eastern music conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her extracurricular activities include being a member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York and Stony Brook University Young Artists Program. She has received numerous school awards and is active in the local community. Ava’s post high school plans include exploring how music can promote community partnerships and crosscultural relations. She has committed to Brown University where she plans to create her own major that focuses on a mixture of topics including ethnomusicology, human development, international relations, education, and nonprofit organization in an interdisciplinary context. Ava shared some enlightened words for her peers: “challenge yourself in classes you’re actually interested and take part in extracurricular activities that you love,” she said. “Don’t worry about doing what you think a college admissions office might want to do and just pursue your passions. The rest will follow.”

Linked Together In Kindness Rocky Point’s Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School students have been going the extra mile this school year to demonstrate strong character traits. Each time a student was

“caught” being kind, they were invited to write their name on a slip of paper which was connected together to form links of kindness. Each class had their own chain of kindness

and this spring the class links were connected together to create one long chain of kindness at FJC. In total, there more 1,802 links.

Designer Creates Logo Ward Melville High School’s advanced graphic design class has developed a reputation for producing artistically talented students, a reputation that earned the attention of the couture fashion industry’s own Salvatore Tramuto. During an in-class design workshop, the class was invited to create a logo/identity for Mr. Tramuto’s new business

Retailineering, a retail fashion advisory business in New York City. The class competed to create designs embracing the company’s vision and, after reviewing all designs, Mr. Tramuto selected on winner. “I cannot begin to say how impressed I am with the student designs,” said Mr. Tramuto. “The results are beyond what I expected.”

Senior Danielle Wenzler’s design was chosen as the winner and Danielle was presented with a $250 scholarship and a T-shirt with her logo on it. Danielle’s logo will be used on all marketing and branding material for the company and she will receive full credit as the designer of the graphic logo on the website.

Learning About Allergies

In an effort to help promote allergy awareness, Rocky Point’s Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School students recently attended an assembly program with Kyle Dine. Mr. Dine grew up with multiple food allergies and flipped allergy awareness

into a topic that engages students by using his authentic stories, songs and puppets. The show empowered children both with and without food allergies to all take allergies seriously and do their part to maintain an allergy-safe school. JAE students were

engaged in understanding about food allergies and how to support the effort of allergy awareness. The school extends special thanks to the Giagios and the VillafanKaplan families, who generously provided for this program at the school.

Formulas, Fractions And Fun Port Jefferson Middle School sixth graders took a STEM field trip to the United Skates of America in Seaford and attended lessons and hands-on activities that directly related to what

they are learning in their classroom. They then roller skated and continued to grasp the science of roller skating, the laws of motion and even how the rink is designed. “This event really helped

students grasp how STEM principles are a part of our everyday lives,” said math teacher Megan Ryan. “It was a great educational opportunity for the students and they even got some physical activity.”

Teamwork Abounds At Lacrosse Clinic The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School boys and girls varsity lacrosse teams recently hosted their annual youth clinic for the Port Jefferson Village Lacrosse Association. In addition to the hard work and enjoyment of all the students involved, Taylor Forstell, head coach for

the boys varsity team, noted the importance of the event as a continuation of the development of the younger players, as they are the cornerstone of the program’s progress. “Events like this puts faces to the jerseys of the varsity athletes, whom our youth athletes come out to support,” he said. The

mutual benefits to both players and volunteers was also expressed by senior captain Jonathan Moshe, who said “it is a great motivator for younger athletes to continue to work at the sport. New Ground, based in Levittown, offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. A primary social worker is assigned to all families in both of these programs once they start with the organization. New Ground social

workers provide guidance, resources and assistance to the families in various areas. The New Ground Veterans Program is another very important part to their organization. Homeless Veterans can get placed in reduced cost housing and be provided with intensive social work and education services by New Ground to assist them with achieving goals in the areas of employment, financial literacy, education, career development, parenting, basic life skills, education advocacy and more. In 2016 their services were expanded so they can serve an even greater number of Veteran households. Through collaboration with the Northport VA Center, New Ground began offering their programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program. Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.
