guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

A Return To Summer On The Shore

With every passing day, it becomes clearer that summer is almost in full swing. The beaches are filling with tourists, and the ferries are packed! As a strong Memorial Day Weekend predicted, this summer is turning out to be very busy. It is my fifth summer working at Maguire’s Bayfront Restaurant in Ocean Beach. My first few shifts of the summer have been crazier than in years prior. We are already seeing a rush of people eager to take part in the festivities associated with a warm summer. Thus far, it seems as if the lull created by

Hurricane Sandy has finally ended. People are returning to Fire Island slowly, but steadily. Only time will tell, but it looks as if we are experiencing a return to normalcy. Dolphins can already be seen swimming off the beach, and they are plentiful. As we kick off the summer, it is important to remember that Fire Island is not just a place to have a fun weekend; for many, like myself, Fire Island is the place that we call home. It is a place where memories have been formed. Each year, we see drunk people and other party animals who do

not take consideration for the environment or Fire Island as a whole. As an advocate for nature preservation, this truly saddens me. The state of both our beaches and our infrastructure has worsened in the past few years. Even though I’m just a kid, these changes are pretty obvious. Everywhere you look, degradation is found. As you head to the beach this summer, remember to pick up your garbage and protect wildlife. This will ensure that we will have great summers every year.

Both the Baltimore event, to be held at the McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland and the Long Island event, scheduled for the Field of Dreams Park in Massapequa, New York, start at 9 am and end 24 hours later. Submitted By Michael Sceiford - Edward Jones Port Jefferson Like many people, you might not particularly enjoy thinking about your estate plans, but such planning is necessary to make sure your assets go where you want them to go. And it’s just as important to regularly review your plans with your tax, legal and financial professionals in case any changes are needed. For instance, some of your wishes expressed in your will may be overridden by beneficiary designations you filled out years ago. If these designations become outdated, your assets could be passed to those you didn’t intend. You might be surprised at how many of your financial assets and legal documents have beneficiary designations tied to them. If you have an IRA, a 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, a life insurance policy, an annuity, a transferon-death (TOD) arrangement, or any of a variety of other assets or accounts, you almost certainly named a beneficiary. And this beneficiary designation offers a simple, direct and efficient way to get assets in the hands of your loved ones who survive you. However, as time goes by, you may experience many changes in your life — and when your life changes, your beneficiary designations may need to follow. But if you are like many people, you might forget to update these designations after a marriage, divorce or other change in your family situation. And because the beneficiary designation is a legally binding document, the asset will go to the person you once named as a beneficiary, regardless of your current relationship status. It really doesn’t take much effort to look over your accounts and legal arrangements to ensure that your beneficiary designations are current — and if they aren’t, it’s pretty easy to change them. In fact, for some financial accounts, you may be able to update the beneficiary designations online. In any case, plan on reviewing your beneficiary designations regularly, but especially when you experience a change in your life. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club, located at 483 West Main Street in Huntington. The creative works of several Three Village students earned top honors at this year’s Walt Whitman Birthplace Association’s annual poetry contest for students in grades 3-12. This year’s program generated approximately 4,000 entries. P.J. Additionally, Ward Melville High School senior Irene Poster and 10th-grader David Dill won first place in their respective grade categories. The students will be recognized on June 1st at the Walt Whitman Birthplace, where they will receive their awards.

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School junior Ryan Burgert recently took home a gold medal from the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair at Hofstra University. According to his teacher, Christina Morgan, Burgert was required to make a presentation and

defend his project before a group of judges in both a preliminary and a final round. He explained that his project, “Controlling Artificial Neural Networks Using Genetic Algorithms,” focused on analyzing images and data through color grading. He plans to continue developing his

project over the summer and possibly sell the results. This is not the first time Burgert has placed in the math fair — as a 10thgrader, he was awarded a silver medal for his project “Calculating the Sine and Cosine of Any Angle using Numeric Methods.”

The academic, leadership and service accomplishments of 91 Rocky Point High School juniors and seniors were commended this spring as the scholars were granted membership into the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society. During an induction ceremony, the students joined current members and took the official oath of membership.

“Being inducted into the National Honor Society represents a wonderful achievement, as these students are being formally recognized for their efforts and accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character,” said adviser Guy Reid. To be inducted into the NHS, students must excel not only academically, but also in the areas of

leadership, service and character. Students are first identified by their academic standing, and then must complete an application including an essay, multiple recommendations, and documentation of involvement in extracurricular and community service activities.

Ward Melville High School senior Raymond Yin was named the Grand Award winner in the Energy category at the 2014 International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environmental Project (ISWEEP) Olympiad in Houston in May. Raymond’s work was selected for the Grand Award from 385 projects from 66 countries.

The project, “Graphene Oxide Membranes for Energy Efficient Ethanol Dehydration by Pervaporation,” successfully used graphene oxide, a form of carbon, to make a membrane that efficiently removes water from ethanol, which has become a major ingredient of automotive gasoline. They then moved on to Florida, where took the highest score in Prelims at Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida, and then became 1st place champions by over 10 points at ESPN Wide World

of Sports in Orlando, Florida. This is where the music stopped for them twice and they had to do half their routine with no music! They started up by one of the Captains, Amanda Rose, calling out “One, Two, Three, Four” over and over, and as the team counted, so did the crowd. They were given a standing ovation at ESPN by hundreds of people. Their coach, Samantha Melella, is a driving force for their success. She is dedicated and knows how to build a champion.

Scholarship Support The Rocky Point High School varsity baseball team helped raise awareness and funds for a local cause with a personal connection to the school community – the “Live Like Susie” scholarship. The Eagles dedicated their spring game against Mt. Sinai to celebrate the life

of Susie Facini, a former Rocky Point student who passed away. Prior to the game, Laura Jean Goldstein sang the National Anthem and coach Andrew Aschettino delivered a speech about the occasion before inviting Susie’s father to throw out the first pitch.

The team also presented Mr. and Mrs. Facini with a ball signed by all of the players and flowers. Throughout the game, players collected donations and sold refreshments to raise money for the scholarship.

Walking For A Cure Proving that not even the threat of rain could dampen their spirit of giving, Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School students turned their school’s hallways into a walking course to participate in this year’s Mini Relay For Life. The program, which has become an annual tradition at the building, is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, coordinated by physical education teacher Maria Amoscato. Before the more than 200 participants walked countless laps around the school, all gathered in the gymnasium for a kickoff

event. On the walls were creative banners fashioned by each of the school’s classes – blanketing the room with a real sense of hope for the future. Ms. Amoscato delivered a welcome address and attendees heard from teacher Becky Pagnotta, who shared how cancer had affected a member of her family. Throughout the program, students earned a white and purple bead to place on a necklace to record every mile walked and had the chance to take part in a variety of raffles on display. Through generous donations from family and friends, this year’s event

raised $8,368.8 for the cause; $1,390 of which was singlehandedly collected by lead fundraiser Jared Massa. Over the past five years, the school has collected more than $ 40,000 for this cause. The entire community will have a chance to help this worthy cause during the upcoming Rocky Point Relay for Life event, which will take place at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School in Rocky Point beginning at 6 p.m. on June 13th and run until 6 a.m. on June 14th. The creative banners made by the students at JAE will also be on display during this event.

Senior Recognized grades 9-12 throughout the U.S. and its territories. TJ’s essay “Why I’m Optimistic About Our Nation’s Future,” highlighted the important role that veterans play in society. He writes, “I was taught by my family, especially my grandfathers who are veterans, that the greatest gift bestowed upon us as citizens of the United States of America is our freedom. I had a passionate interest in

the founding fathers at a young age and spent time studying the sacrifices and triumphs that led to America’s independence.” TJ’s essay entered the state level of judging after first receiving endorsement at the local VFW Post level. All essays were judged on originality, content and delivery, as the writer was also required to summit a digital recording of their piece.
