As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow social distancing rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from

the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it. A Plentiful Food Donation As the COVID-19 pandemic drags on, hospital staff across the island continues to push forward as the heroes they are. In response, Mather Hospital of Northwell Health & Platinum Catering has donated a plentiful food donation to honor and thank their Mather Hospital Residents. Spearheading the food donation effort, Dr. Schwartzberg of Mather Hospital, Colon and Rectal Surgery, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Surgery who also volunteers at the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation knew this was something he wanted to do to give back to his community. “They are a group of kind, giving and caring individuals who go above.” Dr. David Schwartzberg sits on the CMAC and Executive Council of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s Long Island Chapter and helps raise awareness for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Dr. Schwartzberg is also the Team Captain for the TAKE STEPS + VIRTUAL event - the Foundation’s largest virtual fundraising event where patients, caregivers, and corporate and healthcare partners empower and inspire one another. Home Garden A Guide To Buying And Setting Up A Bird Bath Warm weather means more opportunities to spend time outdoors while at home. Whether your favorite form of outdoor recreation includes sitting on the patio reading or digging in the garden, there’s a good chance that you will be sharing the space with local wildlife. Optimizing opportunities to view and interact with backyard wildlife can make the great outdoors even more enjoyable. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology indicates that there are around 2,059 bird species on the continent of North America. Red-winged blackbirds, yellowrumped warblers, American robins, and chipping sparrows are among the most commonly seen birds in North America. Making a backyard hospitable to birds can increase the chances for sightings and hearing their sweet songs. Installing a bird bath can be a step in the right direction. Bird baths can make yards more attractive to birds. Birds

require a supply of fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing. By setting up a bath, homeowners can attract not only seed-loving birds, but those that don’t eat seeds and wouldn’t normally congregate around feeders, indicates All About Birds. Experts surmise that birds may bathe to maintain their feathers. Not all bird baths are constructed in the same fashion. Many bird baths sold in stores are better suited for decoration than for serving as functional baths. There are four general types of bird baths: standing pedestal, hanging bath, deck-mounted, and ground-level. In general, the lower a bird bath is to the ground, the more likely birds are to use it. Most natural sources of water birds use are on or near the ground. Therefore, groundlevel bird baths may be the best investments. It is important to keep the water in a bird bath shallow (around two inches of water or less). This enables birds to splash

around safely and wade in. Birds do not want to slide around, so a material that is coated and slippery, like glazed ceramic or glass, may not be too popular. Rough stone or a bird bath modified with pea gravel or rocks can give birds steady footing. Place the bird bath in the shade if possible to ensure the water is cool and fresh. Locate it by a tree so the birds can hop up to a branch and preen afterwards. All About Birds also says that a bird bath is more attractive if it has a dripping or moving water feature, as this is often irresistible to birds. Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration.

(The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The

Stony Brook University Hospital’s Team Lavender, along with a newly assembled Staff Support Team, made a special delivery to the employees at the Long Island State Veterans Home. The team put together 170 care packages filled with donated items from the community including gum, Chapsticks, beverages and snacks, as well as trays of homebaked goods, crocheted ear savers, and masks made by

a veteran. Team Lavender consists of volunteers including doctors, nurses, social workers, patient advocates, chaplains, a faculty and staff care team, employee assistance program (EAP) and employee health program (Healthier U). The purpose is to provide immediate emotional, spiritual and psychological support for faculty and staff after an adverse or unexpected event. Team Lavender completed a

successful pilot during the last year in the NICU and Maternity units. The coronavirus pandemic has enabled Team Lavender to expand and join forces with the Staff Support Team to provide hospital wide support. Rocky Point Students Recognize Red Nose Day

Fourth grade students in Rocky Point’s Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School came together virtually to recognize Red Nose Day. Teachers Deborah Vieira and Lisa Celentano created a fundraising page to create awareness of the initiative – the Red Nose Day Joke-Ha-Thon – where they encouraged families to share their best jokes to spread joy and raise funds to support children living in poverty. Rocky Point students, staff and families donated

more than $300 for this worthy cause and wore red noses and red shirts at home to show their support. “We were thinking about all the empathy and generosity that our families have shown this year in fourth grade,” Vieira said. “Our class was part of an animal adoption, raised funds for KIN, participated in food pantry assistance, donated in The Great Pajama Drive, took part in Jump Rope for Heart and the “Soup”er Bowl drive for

a local church. We wanted to be sure that the students had the opportunity to continue their sincere contributions.” The students have put into action the character education skills they’ve learned throughout the year – they read articles, watched videos and wrote letters to local officials to share their views on child poverty – proving that even in the face of this unique and challenging time, they realize that their help is beneficial to others.

Group Plants With Similar Water Needs Together When planning spring landscapes, homeowners should always group plants with similar water needs together. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, grouping plants with similar water needs together helps to conserve water, which can be an especially useful strategy if or when drought

restrictions go into effect in summer. Homeowners also can embrace additional strategies to landscape with water conservation in mind. For example, aerating soil helps to improve water flow to plants’ roots and reduces water runoff, helping to ensure that plants get all of the water they need while

reducing the likelihood that homeowners will have to use excessive amounts of water to keep plants healthy. In addition, using low-water-using types of grass can help homeowners who live in areas prone to drought conserve water while still maintaining lush, green lawns.

At the Port Jefferson School District virtual Board of Education meeting on May 19, Peter Meehan was appointed the new coach for the varsity boys basketball team. A Port Jefferson School District alumnus who coached the Hampton Bays varsity boys basketball team from 1991-96 and then again from 2002-20 after coaching at St. Joseph’s College and Suffolk County Community College, Meehan recently retired from Hampton Bays High School as a special education teacher and special education department coordinator. “We are extremely excited to have Coach Meehan lead our basketball program,” Port Jefferson Athletic Director Adam Sherrard said. “His dedication to an off-
