Would you know what to do if you witnessed a cardiac emergency? A recent survey suggests that 70 percent of Americans feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they don’t know how to administer CPR or they’re afraid of hurting the victim. In honor of National CPR and AED Awareness Week, June 1st-7th, the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association encourages everyone to learn Hands-Only CPR by watching a short video by visiting www.heart.org/ HandsOnlyCPR. Cardiac arrest is an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. Each year, over 326,000 out-

of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the U.S. and only 10 percent of outof-hospital cardiac arrest victims survive. According to the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association, 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes and residential settings. Therefore, if you are called on to give CPR in a cardiac emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love. CPR, especially when performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps: If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. During CPR, you should push on the

CPR & AED Awareness Week In September of 2007, Congress designated the first week in June as National CPR & AED Awareness Week. This year, the week falls from June 1st7th. The week highlights how lives can be saved when more people know CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). The American Heart Association (AHA) urges the public to be prepared for cardiac emergencies, and for good reason. Plain and simple, CPR when started immediately in

an emergency situation, saves lives. Each year over 400,000 people die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Over 80 percent of these emergencies occur in the home. Unfortunately many bystanders do not initiate CPR, possibly because they do not want to get involved, or possibly because they do not know what to do. More than 92 percent of cardiac arrest victims do not survive to be discharged. However, these scenarios could be quite different. A person’s survival rate increases by more

The Gift of Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period. From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace. From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on

up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be. Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be. It’s not always easy. And

for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is. Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to. Imagine that.

Twenty-seven Suffolk County Community College Students were awarded Stay On Long Island Initiative (SOLII) Scholarships that will provide full tuition for at a Long Island College or University. The SOLII scholarship program conceived by Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay in 2010 to staunch Long Island’s “brain drain” by keeping talented, motivated students on Long Island and attending Long Island Colleges and Universities

awarded scholarships totaling approximately $640,000 to 27 Suffolk County Community College students. The program has awarded more than $3.7 million in scholarships to 116 Suffolk County Community College students since its inception, McKay said. “The SOLII Scholarships help our graduates achieve their academic dreams by continuing their education at quality four-year colleges and universities right here in our region,” President McKay said. The initiative, McKay explained, provides full and

partial-tuition scholarships to current Suffolk County Community College students who graduate and transfer to partnering fouryear Long Island colleges that include: Adelphi University, Briarcliffe College, Dowling College, Farmingdale State College, Five Towns College, Hofstra University, LIU Post, LIU Riverhead, LIU Brentwood, Molloy College,New York Institute of Technology, The College at Old Westbury, St. John’s University, St. Joseph’s College and Stony Brook University.

Scraggy Walk/Run Wearing class t-shirts and sneakers, more than 600 Edna Louise Spear Elementary School students did their best to complete a 1.1-mile course through Scraggy Hill Park’s fields during the annual Scraggy Hill Run/ Walk on May 15th.

The challenging course took participants across Scraggy Hill Road, down rolling hills, through a wooded trail and across the finish line where they were met with cheers from spectators, teachers and administrators. Following their completion of the

course, the students were treated to ice pops. The annual race aims to promote physical fitness and culminates a severalweek training period where students walked, ran and swam in their physical education classes to get ready for the big run.

The Royal Education Foundation’s second annual Power of One Family Fun Run was once again deemed a success as more than 200 participants ran or walked a two-mile course through the streets of Port Jefferson Village on May 9th.

Roller Coaster Of Learning Rocky Point High School’s physics and Advanced Placement physics students in Dr. Jeffrey Spahn’s class applied their knowledge of various physics concepts as they took part in a Great Paper Roller Coaster Challenge this May. Using only their problem solving skills, cardstock

paper and tape, the students worked in groups to create designs for coasters able to withstand the weight of a marble. The completed projects were required to be between 30-100 cm in height and have a track length of at least 150 cm. They were awarded points for including at least one loop,

six turns and decorations in their design. The classes pinned their completed designs against their peers in a spirited competition to see which roller coaster was the most exciting, reliable and took the longest time for the marble to travel from start to finish.

CSI Club Takes Home Award Earl L. Vandermulen High School’s CSI Club members proved that have what it takes to solve a crime, as they recently participated in the 15th Annual CSI Challenge. Following their performance, the

club received the Best Computer Forensics prize. To earn the award, the team was required to solve a crime scenario that would lead to the arrest of the correct suspect. The Port Jefferson School District extends

New APs Appointed The Three Village School District has appointed Tanya Hurowitz and Merrilleen Heidrich as assistant principal of Arrowhead and W.S. Mount Elementary Schools, respectively. Both professionals will begin their work in the district on July 1st, 2015. Ms. Hurowitz, a nearly 20 year veteran educator, is a familiar face in the

district, having worked at the elementary level from through September 2000 through June 2008. She is currently the assistant principal of Woodhull Elementary School in the William Floyd School District. During her previous work in Three Village, Ms. Hurowitz worked as a summer reading teacher, third-grade teacher and

assistant principal at Nassakeag Elementary School. Ms. Heidrich has worked in the educational field since 1996 and is currently working at Sunrise Drive Elementary School in the Sayville School District as AIS math teacher and special education summer school principal.

travels to Bosnia with Camp New Hope and the Friendship Camp, building relationships and exploring peace and reconciliation. When the students at ICC learned how the war affected the children, they really wanted to participate and show they cared.” Twenty years later, Bosnia still bears the wounds of war. “The students felt like they were making a difference by sending messages of hope, love, and peace to children in a war-torn country,” said Konnerth.

Discovering The Universe

Rocky Point Middle School eighth-grade general science students had the chance to learn about the universe through a variety of hands-on activities and interactive modules when the Vanderbilt Museum’s Traveling Classroom arrived in mid-May. The 37-foot recreational bus transformed into a

mobile learning station, provided students the opportunity to looked at how astronomers find out about the universe through exploring light, telescopes, digital imaging, 3-D universe and gravity. Teachers from the Vanderbilt Museum were on hand to assist the students with the inquiry based learning projects

Jordan Sundel, is a very special young student. Since he was little, he has aspired to be the President of the United States. He has always done extremely well in school and has cared about helping others. In April of 2012, he organized an auction and pancake breakfast that raised just over $1,000 to help the tornado victims.

He donated this money to the Southern Illinois Community Foundation. In December of 2013, his family held a garage sale where he sold drinks, food and handmade bracelets to help a charity called 9-1-1 Veterans, where he raised a little over $300 to help wounded soldiers on Long Island. Jordan has also collected

goods at his school to make care packages to send to the soldiers overseas, and has helped his school collect money for the Wounded Warrior Project. He has helped make lunch bags with sandwiches, snacks and water to help feed the local hungry and homeless people in the area at his school. This year, Jordan started sixth grade at The Knox school in St. James. He made Honor Roll one semester and High Honor Roll, along with High Effort Honor for two semesters. He was the first sixth grader to be elected as next year’s middle school President, where he will then be a seventh grader. Jordan was recently nominated by Sharon Lawrence, the Assistant Head of School, to be part of the Envision program, the Junior National Young Leaders Conference, where he will be spending a week in Washington D.C.

Ward Melville High School senior Niyati Desai was named a second place finalist in the physics category of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), held May 10th-15th in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Niyati, a member of Ward Melville’s InSTAR®

science research program, presented her work alongside over 1700 student scientists from 75 countries, regions and territories. Her project used graphene to develop a new type of transistor that can be a hundred times smaller than current

silicon-based versions. This pioneering work is expected to lead to a new generation of super-small electronic devices that are far more sophisticated and efficient than our current technology allows. A tawny middle age man perched in a kayak, outfitted in a life vest, navigates his oars right and left. Brilliant sunlight reflects the glossy orange hue of the boat’s hull. A young woman with auburn hair streaming behind her shoulders, in pink tank top and striped shorts, pedals a bicycle pathside. She waves hi to a senior man and wife strolling the road during their recreation walk.

A pair of black birds sporting roseate heads, chalk-like lines on sooty wings and tail, yellow beaks and three large frontal talons, beheld moments ago maneuvering and bouncing in the water, now on land pecking at the grass like chickens. On Memorial Day 2015, at 9:00 a.m., eight veterans of the Marine Corps, members of Marine Corps Veterans of Long Island, Mercury Detachment (PO Box 236, Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776) formed a firing detail to fire a rifle salute at the Port Jefferson Fire Department for their Memorial Day ceremonies. When the ceremonies were concluded, the Marines had some time before their next firing detail at Calverton National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. They decided to have breakfast at the Mount Sinai Diner, located at 191 Route 25A in Mount Sinai. Six of the Marines went to the diner, where they were seated and ordered their meals. During the course of the breakfast, many patrons of the diner passed them and offered their thanks for the Marines’ service to the country. The last customer to approach them was a Navy veteran. He shook hands with each Marine and also thanked them for their service. When breakfast was finished, the Marines asked for the check and the waitress told them that the Navy veteran had paid their bill. Thank you Navy, and thank you for your service and your act of kindness to the Marines. Semper Fi.
