(StatePoint) Social distancing guidelines across the country have made visiting a conventional movie theater difficult, if not impossible. However, what was once a relic of the past has now become an innovation in entertainment, the drivein movie theater. The drive-in movie theater is nearly as old as the automobile itself. While today, there are about 300 drive-in theaters across the country, many more are popping up wherever there is space. Indeed, Walmart recently announced more than 160 of its parking lots will be converted into drive-in movie theaters around the country and many small businesses are doing the same. “A drive-in movie is the ideal event for anyone with a car because they can get out for a drive to enjoy a common experience with friends and family while taking appropriate social distancing precautions,” says Rah Mahtani, marketing communications manager

for MINI USA. To shed light on this rediscovered institution of cinema, MINI USA created a guide for drivers to help them make the most of the experience. Here are five of their top tips: 1. Arrive early. Many theaters allow guests to arrive up to an hour before the show begins. Take advantage of this time to pick the best parking spot and stretch your legs. If the snack bar is open, grab a treat! 2. Bring the right car. Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary – Celebrate 50! - wants Long Island, Queens and Manhattan residents to know that its Family Center for Autism in Garden City, NY offers scholarships to help those who are financiallychallenged to gain access to its wide range of programs. In addition to its services, which include Behavioral Analysis Services, Family Support Services, and School-based Services, the Center offers art camps, sports and fitness, music

and movement, scient and tech, salon and spa, and vocational programs. Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism’s Senior Director Nicky Faranda noted that, “Through the generosity of private donors, we are able to offer those in need scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to pay for any of our program classes. To date, we have raised almost $200,000 which has enabled children through adults to participate in programs designed to build skills in specific areas, while encouraging socialization, recreation and the development of valuable life skills.” To date, the Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism has awarded over 239 scholarships valued at $245,589 for

individuals with autism. The scholarship program, which was first introduced in 2015, was created when it became clear that there were many in the community who simply did not have the additional financial resources to pay for the Center’s programs despite the fees being kept to a minimum. Today, in light of the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the increasing number of families experiencing financial hardships, the scholarship program is even more critical. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm www.hobbsfarm.info

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly

makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. Rocky Point High School senior Samuel Moscoso has been honored with the New York State Seal of Biliteracy. The New York State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in one or more languages, in addition to English. The intent of

the Seal of Biliteracy is to encourage the study of languages, to identify high school graduates with language and biliteracy skills for employers, to provide universities with additional information about applicants seeking admission and placement, to prepare students with 21st century skills, to recognize the value of world, classical and

home language instruction in schools, and to affirm the value of diversity in a multilingual society. Samuel worked diligently during the past two years to fulfill this achievement, the district’s director of humanities, Melinda Brooks, said. “We are very proud of his accomplishment and wish to congratulate him on his hard work.”

Author Shares A Love Of Literacy Arrowhead Elementary School kindergarten and first grade students had a special treat when the school welcomed Ward Melville High School math teacher Cheryl Taborsky and newly published author as part

of Ward Melville High School library’s “Author in Residence” series. During the event, Ms. Taborsky read her book “Sarge,” a story about what it means to be a puppy raiser for a service dog. The students marveled

knowing that Ms. Taborsky not only penned the book but also was the illustrator for the publication. After enjoying the story, the students helped to make dog treats for a local animal shelter.

Student Earns Acclaim In National Essay Contest

Minnesauke Elementary School fifth grader Holden Cone was named the third-place winner in the elementary school category for the National Center for State Court’s 2021 Civics Education Essay Contest. This year’s contest drew 1,826 entries and Holden’s entry was selected as a finalist by Texas Chief Justice Nathan Hecht and Colorado Justice Richard Gabriel. The annual contest aims to educate the public on how law and the legal process protect society. Presented by the National Center for State Courts, the contest honors Law Day. To enter, Holden penned an essay that answered the prompt “what does the rule of law mean to you?” in 100 words or less. Below is a copy of Holden’s award-winning piece: “The rule of law means

FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips As vaccinated New Yorkers begin to gather for nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their outdoor grills. With COVID precautions motivating more people to cook and grill at home, The FASNY urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President John Farrell.  “We want all residents to stay safe as we celebrate the coming summer days and consider basic grill safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow applicable social

distancing rules to keep their families, and guests, safe.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills. Gas grills were involved in an average of 10,600 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below: Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors; The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches;

Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area; Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill; Never leave your grill unattended while in use; Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it; Always use foodapproved fire starters for wood grills and smokers. Graduation day is one of the proudest moments in students’ academic careers. Diplomas are symbolic of hours spent honing skills and working on assignments and, ultimately, success in the classroom. High school diplomas represent an opportunity to go on to higher learning or a trade, while college degrees indicate young people are ready to begin their professional lives. Many graduates are excited about the prospect of receiving their diplomas. Once in hand, the document can be put on display. The following are some unique ways to showcase diplomas at home or at work. Framing One of the classic ways to display a diploma is in a frame. Many businesses offer customized framing where the frame material

and the matting can be chosen. Some grads may want to include a photograph of the school or a picture of the graduate above the diploma. Graduates also may want to select a frame and mat that coordinates with school colors. Create a shadow box Consider displaying the diploma with other mementos from school. A shadow box is a large, deep display frame that can house items that are thicker than photographs or papers. Items such as a graduation tassel, medal or other award, a varsity jacket patch, or a program from a school performance or awards ceremony can be placed in the shadow box. Create a photo wall Display the diploma among other framed photos from school activities. This can elicit a trip down memory lane every

time the wall is viewed. Some families may want to display their diplomas together, especially if multiple family members attended the same school. Make a work of art Various online art vendors can turn the diploma into different works of art. For example, engravers can laser engrave the diploma onto a wooden plaque. Then the diploma can be displayed in one location and the wood plaque in another. Place it under glass Display the diploma beneath the glass top of a coffee table. When entertaining guests, the diploma can make for a unique conversation piece. A school diploma is worthy of recognition. There are various creative ways to display these documents that reflect the hard work and success of their recipients.

Rocky Point’s Virtual Enterprise Earns Top Spot The Rocky Point High School’s Virtual Enterprise class project, BreAkoUt, has earned a spot in the VE Top 50 companies in the country. The Virtual Enterprise course is designed to provide students with unique opportunities to collaborate in creating and improving a model

company. The 16 students in the class, taught by business teacher Ms. Dorothy Burns, had to complete a set of benchmarks to earn the prestigious position. In addition, the class also earned honorable mention for a television commercial competition. “I am so very proud of
