Learning the Lifecycle

rrowhead Elementary School fourth-graders in Alexandra Gallagher learned about the lifecycle of two animals when they worked to hatch chick and duck eggs this spring. The students helped to keep the eggs warm in incubators, charted the embryos progress by candling the eggs and learned about the various stages the animals go through in their development. The project tied together the science and English Language Arts skills.

Summer Adventures Nassau BOCES and Hofstra University Continuing Education and Hofstra Summer Camps have partnered to offer a variety of exciting, fun educational opportunities for young people in grades 6-11 this summer. Programs cover career exploration, arts, sciences, outdoor education and more. The Saga of Squeegee By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Beautiful turquoise betta seeking small, non-disruptive companion to cohabitate within fully equipped tank. Must be able to vacuum gravel and plant surfaces; windows a plus. So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with? In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.” Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to fly solo! Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

among her students. “The desks are helping some of my students remain focused in class,” she said. Seeing the positive benefits of the standing desks, the district is in the process of exploring the possibility of using them in general education classrooms next school year.

The group was inspired to organize the fundraiser after they started preparing the song “Truly Brave” for the school’s spring concert. The song was featured

on the “Today” show’s “Shine a Light” series and performed by Cyndi Lauper and Sara Bareilles to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer. The students were so moved by the song’s intent that they came up with the idea for the fundraiser.

Arrowhead Elementary School fourth-graders in Alexandra Gallagher learned about the lifecycle of two animals when they worked to hatch chick and duck eggs this spring. The students helped to keep the eggs warm

in incubators, charted the embryos progress by candling the eggs and learned about the various stages the animals go through in their development. The project tied together the science and English Language Arts

skills, as they regularly reflected upon the experience. The hatched chicks were donated to Benner’s Farm in East Setauket and the ducks will be delivered to welcoming homes in the area.

On Saturday, May 21st, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the Ridge Volunteer Fire Department at their 75th Anniversary Memorial Day Parade. The parade included Boy Scout Troop #187, the Ridge Civic Association,

the Bay Shore Fire Department Band and members of Rocky Point VFW Post 6249. The parade started at Smith Road and continued east on Route 25. The parade ended at the Ridge Veteran’s Memorial on Ridge Road, where a small memorial

service was held to honor and commemorate the servicemen and women who have lost their lives to protect our freedom. The Ridge Fire Department also graciously held a barbeque at their headquarters to celebrate Memorial Day.

Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School students and staff members recently rallied together to raise awareness of cancer as they fundraised more than $5,890 during this year’s Mini-Relay for Life event. The effort, which

benefited the American Cancer Society, called for participants to take steps toward a cure as they walked a track set up in the school’s parking lot. Students earned white and purple beads to place on a necklace to record every lap and mile walked. They

also had the chance to take part in a variety of raffles hosted throughout the event. The program, which has become an annual tradition at the building, was once again coordinated by physical education teacher Maria Amoscato.

Cultural Exchange To help foster a deeper understanding of cultural differences that exist not only worldwide but also within the surrounding community, 30 R.C. Murphy Junior High School eighthgrade students recently participated in a Cultural Exchange program with Longwood Junior High School. During the two-day event, participants from each school had the opportunity to partner with a fellow eighth-

grader and experience that student’s daily schedule. The group spent the first day visiting Longwood and the second day at R.C. Murphy. Students participated in icebreaker activities to get to know their exchange partners and enjoyed attending classes and eating lunch at the visiting building. “I really enjoyed this project, I thought it was great experience,” said Murphy eighth-grader Catherine Kelly. “We are all very similar in many

National Honors Rocky Point High School juniors Pooja Deshpande and Maggie Dowd have been named winners in the National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing contest. The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based writing program that was established in 1957 to encourage high school students in their writing and to publically recognize some of the best student

writers in the nation. Each November, the NCTE invites high schools across the nation to nominate 11th-grade writers to enter the contest. Since being nominated, Pooja and Maggie worked alongside their English teacher Christine Blume to perfect their submissions; the first being a piece that the students’ considered their best work, and the second, a themed piece on a topic developed by the Achievement Awards

Advisory Committee. This year, a total of 533 juniors across the country were nominated by their schools and only 264 chosen as outstanding writers. All compositions were evaluated by national judges on content, purpose, audience, tone, word choice, organization, development and style. Judges also looked for writing that demonstrated effective and imaginative use of language to inform and move an audience.

Cleanup Kickoff

Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright joined members of the Port Jefferson Station-Terryville Civic Association to thank them for their participation in the Great Brookhaven Cleanup on May 21st. This year, the civic association cleaned up an area of the Greenway Trail in Port Jefferson Station. They spent the day picking up litter and beautifying

the area by removing overgrowth and brush which was infringing upon the trail. More than 3300 people participated in the Great Brookhaven Cleanup at over 100 locations throughout Brookhaven Town. It was cosponsored by the Town of Brookhaven’s Department of Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful, Inc. The annual Great

Brookhaven Clean Up is part of a national effort that draws nearly 2.5 million volunteers in more than 15,000 communities across America who came together to pick up litter, renew parks, and clean miles of roadway, rivers, lakes, and seashore. This group helped by picking roadside litter along Route 25 in Middle Island.

On Saturday, May 21st, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony for Zachary Paul Abrams and Ryan Austin Hecht of Troop 204. Zachary and Ryan have provided great services to their community and to the residents of Suffolk County, and have honorably earned the extraordinary merit of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in Boy Scouting. “I would like to commend

Zachary and Ryan for their tremendous service to the community,” said Legislator Anker. “I thank them for their hard work and dedication, and hope that they are an inspiration to all of their peers.” In order to become an Eagle Scout, each Boy Scout must complete a community service project. Zachary chose to design and construct five obstacles for the Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton, NY.

The obstacles will be used by the shelter dogs for training and exercise, and by disabled dogs for physical therapy. Ryan designed and constructed an outdoor message board for the outreach office at Infant Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Port Jefferson. The message board will facilitate communication between the outreach office and the parishioners.

It’s that time of year again when high school students go to the mall to pick out tuxedos and dresses for that big day in June - the prom. Students at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Centereach Academic Center (CAC) have their own special dance right in their school. They call it the Spring Fling. Principal Sue Goltz said, “We bring the students over to the Prom Dress Boutique at the Brookhaven Youth Bureau. There they can pick through a fine selection of gowns, handbags, and costume jewelry.”

The bureau helps young ladies’ dreams come true and the service is free and kept confidential. Staff at CAC brought in shirts and ties for the male students to wear. Female students received complimentary up-dos, make-up, and manicures at the Cosmetology Program on site at CAC while male students received shaves and haircuts. Teacher Luke Mahoney said, “The staff decorated the gym, food was donated, a staff member volunteered to be the DJ, and the cosmetology and barbering students put the skills they are learning to good use on

their friends.” Goltz said, “Some of our students will never have the opportunity to go to a prom. We want them to experience the fun of getting dressed up, socializing, dancing, and having their pictures taken to celebrate and mark this special day.” Social Worker Charlie Tedesco, a professional wedding photographer, brought in a backdrop and his photography equipment and set out to capture the male and female students having fun at the Spring Fling.
