Roman Banquet

In a feast fit for a king, Port Jefferson School District’s high school and middle school Latin Club members, along with adviser Anne Algieri, hosted the annual Roman Banquet at the Port Jefferson Village Center.

More than 50 students and their family members were in attendance at the ninth annual event. To recognize ancient Roman culture, students dressed in togas and tunicas, recited ancient Latin poems, performed traditional

songs and feasted on traditional Roman foods. Modeled on an ancient Roman banquet, the menu’s theme was “Ab ovo usque ad mala” (from eggs to apples), the equivalent of the modern expression “from soup to nuts.”

The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify for the distinction, the Miller Place School District answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation,

instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. “Music education is an essential part of our students’ growth into well-rounded individuals, scholars and good citizens,” said Miller Place High School Principal Kevin Slavin. “A strong musical background supports students’ creative problem solving abilities and teamwork while providing the skills necessary to excel both inside and outside the classroom.” The NAMM Foundation is a non-profit supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and its 9,000 members around the world. The NAMM Foundation works to advance active participation in music making by supporting scientific research, philanthropic giving and public service programs.

In recognition of its outstanding commitment to music education, the Miller Place School District was recently honored by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation with the NAMM 2018 Best Communities for Music Education Award. This is the third consecutive year the District has received this award. Less than 10 percent of school districts nationwide received the prestigious award in 2018. The honor comes as a result of the outstanding efforts of Miller Place teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders to ensure access to music learning for all students as part of the school curriculum. “We are honored to receive this designation from the NAMM foundation for the third year in a row,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marianne Cartisano. “Our artistic faculty pours hours of dedication and talent into creating and building upon the District’s outstanding

The Eco Booster was conceptualized to reduce the amount of CO2 entering the air by cars. It is a filter that attaches to the tail pipe and then takes the CO2 and converts it to electricity that in turn

powers the filter. Fire Annihilator: Team Members: Alexa Calvansese, Olivia Drury, Sally Gliganic, and Catherine Ma. A drone that could one day potentially save the lives of firefighters that die putting out fire in dry states like California. It is a small drone that puts out fires using low frequency sound waves as opposed to chemicals and water. Sulfur Dioxide Smoke Stack Filter: Team Members: Rachel Zhang, Julia Lingenfelter and Sofia Mulligan. Sulfur dioxide is one of the largest components of acid rain. This group proposed creating and using a filter that would remove sulfur dioxide from factory emissions, which would decrease pollution and acid rain.

Murphy Junior High School’s science research program have received honorable mentions in the Toshiba and National Science Teachers Association sponsored ExploraVision competition. For the contest, students were asked to imagine a technology 20 years in the future and use the scientific process to research and develop their inventions. Teeing Off Against Cancer The American Cancer Society Kicked Off the 46th Year of Babes Against Cancer this week uniting more than 30 Golf and Country Clubs across Long Island to raise funds and awareness to support breast and prostate cancer. The event raises more than $1M annually and the collective support has surpassed $30 million dollars, making it the largest American Cancer Society fundraiser of its kind, thanks to the joint efforts of over 600 volunteers and 5,000 participants at 30 country clubs in the New York Metro area. More than 230 guests attended the official campaign launch for 2018 on Thursday, May 17th at the Glen Oaks Club, 175 Post Avenue, Old Westbury. Dollars raised through Babes Against Cancer supports the American Cancer Society’s work to save lives and provide support to everyone impacted by cancer -- from research to education, prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery. Awards in many categories support growth, innovative fundraising and dollars raised. This past year, the Top Award was presented to the Glen Oaks Club committee for raising a total of $236,326 in the past season. The runner-up was Fresh Meadow Country Club, who have collectively raised more than $2.8 M since the inception of the Babes campaign. Highlight of the day was the presentation of the Sandy Award, named in memory of Sandy Zuckerman Rothstein, a breast cancer survivor who started the first tournament at The Muttontown Club in 1972. This year’s award was presented to Sandy Seltzer of Roslyn for her outstanding contribution to the Babes Against Cancer fundraising efforts

Sharing is Caring I recently listened in on a rather interesting Press Club of Long Island panel discussion, highlighting the process which went into investigating a cold case that had gone unsolved for over 50 years on the east end of Long Island. The teamwork between reporters and the police department eventually resulted in the case being “cracked,” so to speak, and the unsolved murder put to rest. I bring this up not because of my fascination with true crime stories; but rather, it brought to light the importance of a component often missing in many lines of work, in life as a whole … that of collaboration. Often, the focus is on independence, on doing things one’s own way, with little room for input from others. Cooperation is key – this a concept taught to us from the first day of kindergarten on up, earlier even, as we begin to learn the process of sharing our resources (even if those happen to be building blocks or Barbie dolls). I don’t often have the

opportunity to cover events; but recently, I was privileged to take my journalistic tools into the field and exercise some of those reporting and photography skills honed in the lecture halls of college, even as far back as the grade school classroom. As I stood on the tarmac at Republic Airport last week, borrowed camera in hand, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, I scanned the crowd assembled. Veteran reporters mixed with fresh-faced interns, all waiting for a glimpse of the majestic planes. Some carried smart phones; others set up elaborate tripods and fiddled with expensive lenses, all determined to capture that “perfect” shot upon landing. Suddenly, there was a roar overhead. All attention was instantly focused on the sky, as cameras zoomed, record buttons were pushed and people jostled for a better angle. And then, just like that, they were gone, gliding to a landing on a distant runway before slowly taxiing toward us, where they would

eventually park for follow-up pilot interviews. All around, you heard the murmurings of Did you get the shot? and I thought they would be approaching from the other way… Can we get a do-over? And in that mix of elation and disappointment as many realized they had not, in fact, captured much of anything in their respective frames, there emerged that collaboration I speak of – that natural instinct to cooperate for a common goal. Phone numbers were exchanged, business cards swapped and contacts were instantly made, with promises to share footage and photos. After all, we were here for the same reason. No benefit to withholding information that, ultimately, we all desired to share with the masses. We may not have cracked a case that morning, but we demonstrated on a much smaller scale the beauty of cooperation, of teamwork. The stunning fighter jets aside, that may have been the most beautiful sight of all.

Central School District congratulates team members Kian Abbott, Jeffrey Casey, Abhinav Yadav, Darren Tung, and teacher James Dornicik for winning the national prize. The students will be traveling to Washington, D.C. to be recognized for their outstanding accomplishment and

to receive their awards. Their project was judged best by a national team of judges consisting of scientists from the likes of NASA, National Institute of Health, National Science Foundation, Food & Drug Administration, and others for creativity, scientific accuracy, communication and feasibility of vision.

Up Close Look Ward Melville High School’s gourmet foods classes took an up-close look at the restaurant industry during a recent visit to the Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center is located on Main Street in downtown Riverhead. The center is home to culinary arts, baking and pastry, and hotel and resort management programs. It includes commercial kitchens that serve as

both culinary and baking labs, as well as the SubZero Wolf Demonstration Theater, a state-of-the-art demonstration facility with overhead wide-screen projection and stadiumstyle seating. While visiting the campus, the students took a tour via chef Satoko Matthews. In addition, they were able to learn more about the campus while Matthews demonstrated how to make popcorn with a smoky flavor to reinvent

the wheel. They also visited The Baker’s Workshop, a busy, student run retail bakeshop serving fresh local coffee, breakfast pastries, light lunches, desserts and house made gelato. Here, baking students get hands-on training in both the front and back of the house, as the bakery is run entirely by students, under the guidance of their chef instructors.

Springtime is a musical time in the Port Jefferson School District and an opportunity for high school students to share their talents and instruments with elementary students. The annual Instrument Petting Zoo was recently held at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, where members of the high school instrumental ensembles gave third-grade students a chance to get an up-close look at the instruments of the band and orchestra.

In July 2010, the Dignity for All Students Act was signed into law to combat bias-based bullying, discrimination and harassment in public schools, and to ensure the right of every public school student to learn in a safe, welcoming, and caring environment. Eastern Suffolk BOCES, the Suffolk County InterFaith Anti-Bias Task Force, and the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association joined together and have been working in collaboration to ensure the guidelines and goals established by DASA are being effectively implemented in public schools throughout Suffolk County. One of their joint initiatives was to facilitate

a forum, which coincided with the fifth anniversary of the introduction of DASA, where Suffolk County school districts’ Dignity Act coordinators and district DASA coordinators could share their best practices in the areas of disseminating information to staff, students, and parents; the training of staff and students; prevention and response to events; and response to violations. Through an open dialogue, forum attendees shared and received valuable insight into effective practices, and the tools to enhance their own processes. “We believe that the best product is created through collaboration, and we are grateful to the Suffolk County InterFaith Anti-Bias Task

Force for sponsoring a forum where the best thinkers from Suffolk County came together,” said Suffolk County School Superintendents Association President Lars Clemensen. “From this collaboration was born a resource guide of best practices in the county for making sure students are free from bullying, harassment, and discrimination.” While there is much good work going on in schools across Suffolk County in compliance with DASA, there is always more that can be done and shared. As an outgrowth of this successful forum, a DASA resource guide, which is a compilation of best practices utilized in Suffolk County public

schools for the past five years, was created. This comprehensive resource guide, which is being shared with all Suffolk County school districts, will serve as an informative and valuable tool to support and enhance the work being done to implement DASA and protect the rights of all children attending public schools. “The Dignity for All Students Act defines the necessary components to ensure that students are treated with dignity within the school walls and at school events,” said ESBOCES Chief Operating Officer Julie Davis Lutz, Ph.D. “It is our hope that this resource guide and the ongoing work that we do with students and staff

ensure that this happens in all aspects of their lives, both within and beyond the school doors.” “This resource guide is a collaboration between the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission, the Suffolk County Anti-Bias Task Force, Eastern Suffolk BOCES and the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association,” said Suffolk County Human Rights Commission Chairman Rabbi Steven Moss. “As acts of bullying occur every day in schools, it is vital that schools provide a safe haven for those who have been bullied, a procedure to report these incidents, and then a method to deal with them by those in authority. This useful resource guide will assist those school

personnel who want to understand how they can continue and improve their implementation of DASA for the sake of their students. Exam Excellence Forty-five Port Jefferson Middle School and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students enrolled in Latin earned exceptional marks in the 2018 National Latin Exam. The students, who were among 143,000 students from across the nation and 24 countries to take the annual exam, were presented with certificates of accomplishment by Latin teacher Anne Algieri. Seventh-graders enrolled in Latin IA took the Introduction to Latin Exam. The competition for the top five fourth-grade and the top five fifthgrade Olympiad students from Port Jefferson was an opportunity to learn important strategies for problem-solving.

School of Distinction The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s athletic program has another reason to be proud: All spring varsity teams have been named Scholar/Athlete teams by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. The news is even more impressive because all of the Port Jefferson School District’s varsity teams for the 2017-18 school year have been awarded Scholar/ Athlete recognition. To receive Scholar/Athlete

Team recognition, a sports team’s average GPA for 75 percent of the roster must be greater than or equal to 90. The culmination of both honors means that Earl L. Vandermeulen will be named a 2018 School of Distinction by the NYSPHSAA. Across the state, only about 20 schools are given this honor, and in Section XI only four schools were recognized as a School of Distinction last year. “This honor clearly

demonstrates the ability of all of our student-athletes to show tremendous dedication to their academics, while balancing a busy athletic schedule,” said Dr. Danielle Turner, the district’s director of health, physical education and athletics. “This is a direct reflection of the commitment and support of our district administration, teachers, coaches and community as a whole.”

On Friday May 7th, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright was joined by Suffolk County Legislators Kara Hahn and Sarah Anker at the Comsewogue High School (CHS) Opioid Awareness Walk. The walk was organized by the students focusing on the Comsewogue Opioids Project to combat the opioid crisis through awareness and education to students and community

members. The theme for the Comsewogue Opioids Project is “Be smart, don’t start,” and is focused on strengthening consciousness towards drug prevention in the school. A community coalition of organizations also focusing on youth drug prevention was also present to show their support and provide resources. The organizations that participated in the

Opioid Awareness Walk included the Port Jefferson Station Civic Association, the YMCA and the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau, who joined the students to offer services and programs related to drug and substance abuse issues. CPR Awareness Week National CPR and AED Awareness Week – June 1st through 7th, 2018 – aims to raise awareness and increase the number of people who perform CPR in cardiac arrest emergencies. Each year, more than 350,000 outof-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States. About 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. That’s why this year, the American Heart Association – the world’s leading voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke – is highlighting the importance of bystander CPR. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Higher bystander CPR rates have been linked to greater

survival rates after a cardiac arrest. “Every second counts in cardiac arrest. Bystanders are absolutely critical in a cardiac arrest emergency. They start the American Heart Association’s out-ofhospital chain of survival by calling 9-1-1 and then providing early CPR with an emphasis on chest compressions, and finding the closest AED” said [Dr. Russell Schiff, Director of Ambulatory Pediatric Cardiology at Northwell Health and Vice President of the American Heart Association’s Long Island Board of Directors “What if it were your mom or dad, your husband or wife, your sister or brother, your friend or someone standing next to you who was having a cardiac arrest? Many Americans don’t perform CPR because they don’t know what to do or they are afraid of hurting the person. To help increase the likelihood of people performing CPR in an emergency, the Association recommends Hands-Only CPR, which has two easy steps. Step 1: Call 911. Step 2: Push hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives. The American Heart Association is marking this week here on Long Island by encouraging people to get trained in CPR to spotlight how lives can be saved if more Americans perform CPR and know how to use an AED. In 2007, the American Heart Association, in coalition with the American Red Cross and the National Safety Council, worked collaboratively to federally designate a National CPR and AED Awareness Week, which happens the first seven days of June each year. In 2009, the American Heart Association launched a nationwide Hands-Only CPR campaign to raise awareness about this lifesaving skill. The campaign is supported nationally by an educational grant from the Anthem Foundation. Since 2012, nearly 10.1 million people have been trained in Hands-Only CPR via events, training kiosks and video education with the Anthem Foundation’s support. Campsites Available Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently announced that more than 350 campsites are available at four Suffolk County campgrounds – all within close proximity to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club – during the week of the 118th United States Open Golf Championship. As the week of the U.S. Open approaches, campground availability is likely to change as reservations are made and campsites become filled. In addition, a new Suffolk County website that features an upgraded online reservation system, campsite descriptions and locations, and information on county golf courses and camper rentals was also announced. These changes—which can affect everything from vision to how quickly you can make decisions—influence how well you can drive. With a combination of intellect and camaraderie, Port Jefferson Middle School students took part in the 2018 Suffolk County Elementary Mathematics Tournament and ranked fifth overall for the sixthgrade teams. Michael Melikyan ranked ninth overall out of all of the induvial sixth-graders

Suffolk County Legislator Bridget Fleming was the featured speaker at the May Eastern Suffolk BOCES Community Legislative Committee Meeting. Legislator Fleming captivated the audience as she spoke about the need for civic engagement in a world of fake news and social media. Fleming, an attorney, referred to the U.S. Supreme Court deposition regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election process (The New York Times published the link to the deposition and

print copies were available for meeting attendees). Fleming discussed facts and information outlined in the deposition regarding the extensive organized tampering that occurred in the recent election, as well as in other major political events worldwide. She emphasized the need for citizens to remain watchful when looking for the truth concerning information in today’s digital era. To do so, she recommends always searching for the primary source of news found online and on social media to confirm credibility, and

to teach children to do the same. The committee meets monthly during the school year and is for students and adults interested in learning about issues impacting school districts and their communities, and how to advocate for positive change. All meetings are open to the public and begin at 7 p.m. at the Gary D. Bixhorn Technical Center, located at 350 Martha Avenue in Bellport. The new schedule of meetings will be available in late August.

Chef Competition Congratulations to the winning teams of the Iron Chef Competition held at the Islip Career Center. The Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special career education services to students with special needs. The skills students acquire may help them to obtain entry-level employment in certain industries. The assignment for students in this Introduction to Cooking

Program required them to perform numerous tasks designed to teach life and employment skills, both of which promote independence. Those exercises included sourcing recipes online; developing a recipe theme with corresponding table signage and décor; adhering to a budget; following all recipe instructions; preparing the entrée, side dishes and condiments; and being able to answer judges’

questions. All recipes were assessed by a panel of school staff members and points were awarded based on various criteria, such as taste and presentation. Said Chef Michael Frankson, Introduction to Cooking teacher, “Projectbased learning, such as this assignment, teaches indispensable life skills, as well as proficiency for possible entry-level employment in the food service industry.”

A new suite of online tools makes it easier to manage everyday communication and important decisions about your hearing. Developed by the nonprofit Ida Institute, Ida Telecare is a combination of interactive tools and engaging videos that help you identify your communication needs and concerns. These tools can help you get the most from time spent with your hearing care professional and provide ongoing

support post-appointment. “Research consistently shows that people who self-manage their hearing loss experience greater satisfaction with hearing care and hearing technologies,” explains Ida Institute Managing Director Lise Lotte Bundesen. The site’s Living Well section helps prepare you for appointments by encouraging you to think about your needs and concerns with a series of open-ended questions. My Turn to Talk lets you prioritize the people with whom you communicate. Web-based drag-anddrop technology lets you create circles of those “most important,” “very important” and “less

important” people. A series of prompts can help you organize your thoughts. The Everyday Life with Hearing Loss part provides tips to help you manage conversations, simple strategies to alert others to your hearing loss, ways to improve communication, and ideas on day-to-day interactions. The Storytelling Videos offer insight and inspiration from others’ experiences. You can save notes and completed sessions to your computer and e-mail them to your audiologist or print them out to bring to your appointment. Then, you can work together to map out the strategies and goals that are best for you.

Teachers Honored Two Longwood High School teachers have been recognized for their professional contributions to students from the Suffolk Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYSAHPERD) Suffolk Zone. High School Physical Education Teacher Jefferson Cipp received the Suffolk Zone Adaptive Physical Education Teacher of the Year for his excellence in teaching and overall performance in the disciplines of physical education. He was initially hired as a teaching assistant in 1997 and was appointed a physical education teacher in 2004. In addition to teaching a variety of physical education activities to our

special needs students at the high school, he is also the head varsity football coach. As part of the adaptive physical education program, he serves on the Annual Review Committee and works with the numerous events including the Victory Games, Suffolk County Special Olympics, and Best Buddies. High School Department Chairperson for Health and Physical Education Shawn Dillon has been named the Suffolk Zone Recreation/Adventure Teacher of the Year for his outstanding contributions to the Outdoor Education Program. He began his teaching career in the District in 1999 as a physical education and health teacher. Mr. Dillon was appointed Department

Chair for Health and Physical Education in 2004 and has created several new electives and course offerings in physical education including the outdoor education program. Under his leadership, the program continues to grow each year with new activities and equipment. Mr. Dillon is currently a club adviser for Outdoor Education and the Director of Leadership Through Adventure Camp. “Both Jeff and Shawn are dedicated professionals who work tirelessly on behalf of the students at Longwood,” said Mrs. Curiale. “They both make a positive impact on the physical education program at the High School and continue to lead others by example.”
