The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org
Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group. The brotherhood and family values are not just a way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore. The Long Island B.A.C.A. Chapter had their 100 Mile Ride Event on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Thousands of B.A.C.A. members from around the world participated in this event in various countries and states on the same day! They raised awareness of child abuse and of the services they provide for abused children all over the world.

Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). One of the more popular tourist attractions in the United States is also a popular place to tie the knot. The bright lights of the Las Vegas strip and the surrounding area have drawn visitors for decades. Las Vegas also is home to more than 100,000 weddings per year, according to Clark County Clerk marriage license records. Weddings may be performed at local churches or other houses of worship, inside lavish casinos, or at the bevy of small chapels in and around Las Vegas. Las Vegas is sometimes referred to as “The Marriage Capital of the World” thanks in part to the ease of acquiring a marriage license in the city and the minimal costs involved to tie the knot. But Las Vegas is more than just a popular place to tie the knot. According to data gathered by Facebook in 2014, when the social media service compiled data from users “check ins,” Las Vegas also has grown into a popular honeymoon destination. In addition, Las Vegas also has evolved into a popular spot to celebrate one last hurrah before the big wedding day. Individuals frequently plan bachelor or bachelorette party weekends that incorporate all of the fun Las Vegas has to offer.

Port Jefferson Math Duo Score The Mathematical Association of America has recognized senior Annalisa Welinder and sophomore Grant Samara for their achievement in the American Math Competition 12 and AMC 10, respectively. The exam, which was administered nationwide, consisted of 25 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 60 minutes.
The main purpose of the exams is to spur interest in mathematics and develop talent through the excitement of solving challenging problems. The AMC 10 covers the high school curriculum up to 10th grade. The AMC 12, open to high school seniors, covers the entire high school curriculum including trigonometry, advanced algebra and
advanced geometry, but excluding calculus. “We are so proud of the accomplishments of Grant and Annalisa,” math teacher Dennis Christofor said. “These exams help further their analytical skills and are a great opportunity to continue to master their mathematical talents.”

Tesla Science Center Honor
WADING RIVER, NY – On Wednesday, May 8th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Rocky Point Lions Club 11th Annual Taste of Long Island benefit event, held at East Wind in Wading River. Proceeds from the event benefitted the Rocky Point Lions Club and its 2019 honoree,
the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe in Shoreham. The Tesla Center, built in 1901, is the last remaining laboratory of inventor and engineer Nikola Tesla, whose accomplishments included alternating current electricity, radio, and the wireless transmission tower
at Wardenclyffe. The property is now being restored by the Tesla Science Center not-forprofit organization to honor Tesla’s legacy, teach the community about its rich history, and inspire visitors to participate in science and technology.
New Minnusauke Principal After a thorough interview and search process, the Three Village Central School District is pleased to announce that Nancy Pickford has been selected as the new principal of Minnesauke Elementary School, effective July 1. Ms. Pickford will succeed Dr.
Brian Biscari, who will become the new principal at R.C. Murphy Junior High School. Ms. Pickford is a familiar face in the district, having worked as the assistant principal at Nassakeag Elementary School and the coordinator of the district’s pre-K program
since 2016. A well-versed educator, Ms. Pickford spent 12 years of her career as a general education and special education classroom teacher before transitioning to leadership roles with Long Island University and St. Joseph’s College.

Ward Melville High School’s DECA team had eight members qualify and attend the 2019 International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida. More than 22,000 high school DECA members from the United States, District of Columbia, Canada, China, Germany,
Guam, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Spain participated in this competition. During the event, Ward Melville students fiercely competed in various business topics including written tests and multiple role-plays, in which three Ward Melville members won international medals in the following events:

Volunteer Work Rocky Point Middle School’s community service club has had the privilege of doing their volunteer work at the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook throughout this school year.
The seventh and eighth grade members have donated two hours of their time several Saturdays from November to June to help the residents of the home. Rocky Point High School ninth grader Quentin
Palifka, who was a member of the club all three years in middle school, continued to be of service by joining the group on each Saturday when they visited the facility.
