Observing The Life Cycle
A
fter observing and waiting patiently for almost a month, the first-grade students at Minnesauke Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District watched as a special science project they had been caring for hatched and came to life – quite literally. Since mid-April, the five first-grade classes have been handling and nurturing baby chick eggs as part of their study on embryology and the life cycle of an egg to a chicken.

Stepping Out For A Cure The Scleroderma Foundation / Tri-State, Inc. Chapter will be holding its 10th Annual Long Island Stepping Out To Cure Scleroderma Walk at Wantagh Park on Sunday, June 2nd. Days To Remember By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This is the time to remember Cause it will not last forever These are the days To hold on to Cause we won’t Although we’ll want to Tis the season for proms and pictures and graduations, for final summer vacations with friends and future college and career plans … and even though I am well past that point in my life, this time of year always makes me a bit nostalgic. As I watch students I taught in dancing for years and younger siblings of friends set off on these great adventures,
I can’t help but think back to when it was all fresh and new to me (and feel just a little old!). Upon reflection, I think the one regret most people share is that we – as a collective class – did not take the time to savor the moments quite as much as we would have liked to. Sure, there are pictures and newspaper clippings and all sorts of mementos … but the treasured memories – those are the priceless artifacts that mean the most. Unfortunately, they also tend to fade over time. Me, I still look at my yearbook from time to time, smiling at all the nice compliments and inside jokes which fill the pages from friends, family and faculty members. I still carry a walletsized picture from my prom at Windows On The World – yes, I
still carry photos in my wallet – which has obviously become even more priceless to me given the events which transpired on September 11th. Did I enjoy every minute while it was happening? Somewhat, but probably not to the degree I should have. Unfortunately, we were all consumed with college and scholarship applications, finals and AP exams, term papers and preparing for graduation. The actual experience – the only part which truly matters in the long run – tended to get lost in the shuffle. So to this year’s graduates … try, really try, to slow down, stop and savor … These are the days to remember. These are the moments to treasure.

that provides critical repairs and renovations for low-income homeowners across the United States. Rebuilding Together engaged Irwin Contractors, located in Hauppauge, which agreed to provide building materials at cost for all new insulation, siding and windows while donating all labor and installation expenses. After learning more about the work that Suffolk County United Veterans
provides to homeless and at-risk Veterans, Irwin Contractors also donated all material and labor to build a new roof and front and storm doors. Not stopping there, Rebuilding Together also volunteered their talent to complete interior upgrades by repairing walls, ceilings, bathrooms, and installation of new equipment. The Home Depot Foundation pitched in with a $5,000 gift card that was used for
a new hot water heater and oil burner. Erin D’Aletto from Congressman Bishop’s Office; Tom Ronayne, Director at Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency; and Town of Brookhaven Councilwoman Connie Kepert presented certificates of appreciation from their local offices for the efforts of all four partners. “These groups collaborated on a wonderful gift to

According to the American Heart Association, nearly 70 percent of American adults get no regular physical activity. “Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is a great honor that they should be very proud of.” To become an Eagle Scout, a scout must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership, and perform an approved community service project. For his Eagle project, Kevin Anderson construct two large rolling prop cabinets for use by the Port Jefferson High School Drama Department. With the help of his fellow scouts, leaders and family members, Kevin raised money to
purchase all the building materials for the project by holding two fund raising nights at a local Wendy’s. Alexander Abrams project was to repair and beautify informational kiosks located in the Pine Barrens which were in varying states of disarray. He was able to revitalize the kiosks and remove trash that littered the site. Since the first Eagle Scout Award was presented in 1912, no more than four percent of all Scouts have attained the Eagle Scout rank.
Reading Adventure Project “We believe that summer is an ideal time to nurture the reading habit because children have more time to read for pleasure than they do during the school year,” says Dr. Raymond Huntington, founder and chairman of Huntington Learning Center. “Our Reading Adventure program is designed with fun in mind. Our experts have identified a variety of books for children of all ages and reading abilities - stories that engage children and get them excited about books. Experience has proven to us time and time again that the more children read, the better readers they become and the more they enjoy it - and choose it as an activity they want to do.” Huntington’s Reading Adventure program runs from May through August. At the culmination of the
program, Huntington Learning Center locations will honor participants’ reading achievements. With summer around the corner, Huntington Learning Centers are kicking off its annual Reading Adventure program for children ages kindergarten through eighth grade. To participate, students first choose books from Huntington’s pre-selected book lists, which include a wide range of high-interest book choices for all grade levels and reading abilities. Reading Adventure underscores the excitement that a good book can bring into a child’s life. Each participating reader receives a reading “passport” in which he or she record the books he or she reads and writes a journal entry about each. The entire program encourages students to think of reading as a way to explore new ideas, interests, places and people.

Ride For Life Rides On
Greeted by their families, supporters and a shining display of 6,000 pinwheels, Christopher Pendergast, a 20-year ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) patient and advocate, and other ALS patients, rode onto the Stony Brook University Campus for the annual Ride for Life Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony, marking the halfway point of the ride from Southold to Manhattan, which concluded May 18th. The pinwheels represented the American lives lost each year to ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. During the ceremony, Pendergast presented a check on behalf of the Ride for Life for $150,000 to Stony Brook University to support ALS research at Stony Brook Medicine and the Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Associationcertified center on Long Island. Started in 1998 by Pendergast, the Ride for Life organization raises awareness and funds for ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease. The Ride has raised more than $4.5 million for ALS research since its inception. Each year Stony Brook receives a portion of the Ride’s proceeds to fund research. Senior leadership from Stony Brook Medicine gave Pendergast a gift – a genuine Louisville Slugger baseball bat engraved with the words: “SBU and the Ride for Life ‘Strike out ALS’.” The gift symbolizes Pendergast’s advocacy, courage, endurance and vision in the cause to find a cure for ALS.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Academy Street PTA with a Bike Rodeo on Saturday May 18th in celebration of Bike Safety Month. Sheriff’s Office staff helped run this Safety Clinic to teach kids the real world skills they need to ride a bicycle safely.
Lessons such as the ABC’s of bicycle maintenance, where to ride on the road, how to use hand signals, how to safely cross an intersection, and how to properly wear a bicycle helmet were demonstrated and discussed by Sheriff’s Deputies. Participants tested

Nassakeag Elementary School students, faculty and staff showed their support for American troops serving overseas by collecting hundreds of personal care items, nonperishable food products, supplies and even toys during a schoolwide Boxes for the Soldiers drive.
The monthlong effort was coordinated in time for Memorial Day and as part of the Brookhaven Veterans Association at Brookhaven Lab’s Adopt a Platoon Committee. Nassakeag teachers Judy Larsen and Joan Sperry oversaw the project at the school, which drew enough donations to fill 44 large

Hatching A Love For Science After observing and waiting patiently for almost a month, the first-grade students at Minnesauke Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District watched as a special science project they had been caring for hatched and came to life – quite literally. Since midApril, the five first-grade classes have been handling and nurturing baby chick
eggs as part of their study on embryology and the life cycle of an egg to a chicken. Over the course of the month, the students learned about temperature and humidity in the incubators, the cycle of the chicks’ development, and the different parts of an egg and chick. They also candled the eggs to observe the changes in
the growing embryo. As a cross-curricular project, the students kept scientific journals in which they wrote their observations and read both nonfiction and fiction stories about the subject matter. This year’s hatching was highly successful, and many of the class families have agreed to care for the young chicks after the unit is complete.

Big Hearts, Tiny Hats For a service-learning project geared toward helping the surrounding community, the eighthgrade students in Cynthia Carrucciu’s Family and Consumer Science classes at R.C. Murphy Junior High School made knitted hats for the neonatal intensive care unit at
Stony Brook University Children’s Hospital. During the 10-week class, the students learned how to use round looms to knit and shape small hats for the delicate young patients. To date, the students have created more than 100 hats. In addition to the
community service aspect of the project, the handson learning experience brought to life several science lessons discussed in class – in particular, those surrounding birth weight and the importance of regulating a baby’s temperature.

The trail run took participants up and down rolling hills, including an exciting wooded trail, and finally finished on the athletic fields across from the school on Scraggy Hill Road. Teachers, staff members and student safety patrol posted along the race route helped direct students through the course. Spectators gathered at the finish line to cheer on runners as they completed their trek. A professional timing company was also at the end line to record the results.

Every spring, students participate in a fitness unit called “Walk Across America” as part of their physical education curriculum. Spy Ring Secrets On May 10th, renowned local historian Bev Tyler visited with fourth-graders at the school library of Port Jefferson’s Edna Louise Spear Elementary to discuss the significance of the Culper Spy Ring and how it helped the Patriots win the American Revolution. The visit served as a
culminating activity for a library unit that included several historical fiction books reflective of the time period and also coincided with the social studies curriculum. Tyler, who was dressed as ring member Abraham Woodhull, showed a PowerPoint presentation that included slides of
many primary source documents, maps and a code devised for the ring by Benjamin Tallmadge. Students were able to view wax seals used for letter embossing, were taught how to write in code and created spy-worthy envelopes.

The home renovation was unveiled on a segment of the Ellen Degeneres show on May 13th, and will be featured in the premier of Undercover Cousins, on HGTV this fall. Carrino and Colaneri presently star in Cousins On Call, which airs weekly on HGTV.

The Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School community rallied together this May to participate in the school’s first-ever blood drive and help provide the muchneeded resources required in a variety of medical situations. During the drive, the school collected a total of 53 donated units from 61 registered donors.
Prior to the drive and as a complement to their science curriculum, representatives from Long Island Blood Services visited the school’s fifthgrade classes to teach the students about blood, blood donation and blood transfusions. The students learned about how blood circulates through the body, what
constitutes blood, and what makes an ideal blood donor. On the day of the blood drive, the school’s student council members volunteered as “little doctors” and assisted donors with filling out their paperwork and serving snacks and drinks following the donations.

Scientists, educators, business and community leaders from the region attended the event to celebrate excellence and achievements of women in science. “Women face unique barriers to success and are less likely to seek recognition for their achievements,” said Christine Metz, PhD, investigator at the Feinstein Institute and president of AWSM. “AWSM promotes the cultivation of an environment where women who have a passion and talent for science excel, instead of being held back by stereotypes, and they are recognized for their excellence.” At the second annual awards breakfast, awards in scientific excellence, innovation, mentorship,

For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Toward the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis. Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy toward school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses! For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class. This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences. All of the stress that comes with waiting for
your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down. These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their cars, many students feel that their struggle is over. These students have done it, they have completed their journey. Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip! Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average drops a single letter
grade; the acceptance will prove to be null, void and ultimately invalid. This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career. The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall. This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic. So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.
