Pledging Support The John and Janet Kornreich Charitable Foundation has pledged $525,000 to Friends of Karen. The gift, commencing in 2014 and spread out over a five year period, will provide the resources needed to reach and help even more families across Long Island caring for a child with cancer or another life-threatening illness. “Friends of Karen’s partnership with John and Janet will help strengthen our program by ensuring that no family will have to make this difficult journey alone,”
said Nancy Mariano, Regional Director of organization that has assisted more than 13,000 children since 1978. “Their philanthropic kindness in our Long Island communities is a genuine testament to humanity.” The Kornreich’s donation serves as the single largest gift to Friends of Karen from any Long Island donor. The funds will have an immediate impact on families navigating and managing their daily lives when confronted with a child’s life-threatening illness. Additionally, the money will

provide direct financial support for medically related expenses and a Sibling Support Specialist to assist the brothers and sisters of the critically-ill child. “Our foundation has long strived to support families with a child with a catastrophic illness,” said Mr. Kornreich. “Because of its long-established service and reputation in that area, Friends of Karen fit perfectly into our foundation’s mission.”

Students can also choose from master classes in clowning and stage combat. Attendees work with ensembles, enjoy performances from guest artists and take cultural field trips to museums and Broadway shows. The academy concludes with performances by all students in each arts discipline. This four-week academy runs June 30th-July 25th at the Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Still Missing The Meaning By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the recent passing of Memorial Day, I thought it appropriate to resurrect an old column from 2006, as the sentiment remains the same no matter the year… I am willing to bet that there are many children who were probably raised to think the sole purpose of Memorial Day is strictly to roll out the barbecues, open the pool for the season, head to the beach for the first time and check out all those great sales. Pretty sad, when you think about it. Such a holiday is surely not a “happy” occasion in the traditional sense; although,
for most people, all that matters is that it qualifies as a paid day off. And there we are, off and running, blissfully unaware and increasingly unpatriotic as a result. When did this sense of apathy set it? Is it just a manifestation of the more recent generations, or is it representative of our country as a whole? Now, I’m certain there are many to whom this sentiment does not apply. Any veterans, or the family and friends of those who have served, are generally quite appreciative of such a day’s significance. I, for one, admit that I had never attended any kind of Memorial Day commemoration prior to this year when my family

decided to take a ride out to Calverton for the cemetery’s annual services. Sure, it was solemn, but you know what? So is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives over the course of the last several centuries in wars at home and abroad. Is it really asking too much to observe a day – a portion of a day, even – to appreciate that sacrifice? So, the next time some overly-commercialized holiday comes along, take a moment to reflect upon the reason why it was made a national holiday in the first place. I doubt it was to give people another excuse to have a barbecue.

A Week Of “Lasts” Commemorated
This week has been full of “lasts.” Today was my last Varsity Sports Award Dinner. Tomorrow is my last day of high school. As I write my last article of my high school years, I look back fondly on the memories that I have made and the bonds that I have formed. Even though I’ll be entering college soon, St. John the Baptist will always hold a special place in my heart. There are great people here. Tonight, at my fourth Varsity Sports Award Dinner, I felt like I was part of something bigger than just the Crew Team. I felt as if I was a member of the entire SJB family.
From the athletes to the athletic directors, the bond is strong. As I collected my AllState Award, I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic. It was the fourth, and final, time I would ever stand on that stage and hear my name read by my coaches. It was a bittersweet moment as I won several accolades. From that stage, I could see some of my classmates. They make up the group that has accompanied me in this great journey that culminates in just a few hours. Now, that part of my life is almost over. We are still in training for Nationals, but there will never be a team
that can influence me so greatly. Soon, I’ll be done with high school, and those same classmates will forget my name. The teachers will forget I existed. Only I will remember the wonderful times that I’ve had and the memories I’ve formed. I’ve loved every minute of this crazy ride. Each year, as we watched the seniors lock their lockers for the last time, I have said that I won’t cry when it’s my time. Now, I am welling up from just writing this article. From day one, this place has been my home. I’m going to miss it.

St. Joseph’s College (SJC) will hold its 24th Annual Golf Classic on Monday, June 9th, at the Plandome Country Club in Plandome. The 2014 honoree is Don Lizak, former athletic director of SJC’s Long Island Campus. All proceeds from this event will support the College’s athletic programs. Since 1994, Don Lizak worked to transform SJC athletics into the highly regarded athletic program that it is today. After becoming an NCAA Division III institution in 1997, SJC won the Skyline Conference Presidents Cup four times and grew from eight varsity sports to 19. During his tenure at the College, Lizak oversaw the opening of the John A. Danzi Athletic Center in 1997 and the 24.8-acre Outdoor Field Complex in 2012. He spent 38 years in athletic administration and coaching with stints at Long Island University, Wagner College, St. John’s University and Queens College, and as a tournament director for the Metropolitan PGA. At the end of 2013, Lizak retired from SJC after 19 years of dedicated service. “Don Lizak has been an extraordinary director of athletics for St. Joseph’s College,” said Nancy Connors, vice president for the Office of Institutional Advancement at SJC. “It is fitting that the entire SJC community honor him at this event, which raises funds for athletics. On May 17th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert attended the Ridge Memorial Day Parade where she marched along with scouts, the local honor guard who rode on horseback, fire departments, elected officials, and veterans. The parade marched on Route 25 in Ridge, from Smith Road to the Ridge Veteran’s Memorial Park, where a ceremony was held to honor those who have given their lives for the
freedom of all Americans. “It is always my great pleasure to join the Ridge community at their Memorial Day Parade to pay homage to those who courageously served this great nation and never returned to loving families and friends,” said Councilwoman Kepert. Thank you to all those who work so hard to organize this tribute to fallen heroes; the Ridge Fire Department, Scout troops, veterans and community members. This
is a wonderful community event.” The Councilwoman also commemorated the upcoming holiday on Sunday, May 18th, at the Brookhaven Town Volunteer Firefighters Museum’s Annual Memorial Day Services in Ridge. “Hope,” a multipanelled artwork created by three classes of visual art students at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, was awarded a First Prize in the 2014 student art competition at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove, Long Island. The work was designed and built during the summer of 2013 at the renowned summer arts day camp, which is also an agency of the UJA-Federation of New York. It was conceived as a visual metaphor for the chronology of events that precipitated the Holocaust and its aftermath. The Usdan winning prize, in the Multi-Media/Still category, was awarded at the Center on Sunday May 18th. The project was conceived by Usdan Art Department Chair Rochelle Morgan, who is a child of Holocaust survivors. It began with a visit to Usdan in August by Ms Morgan’s mother and aunt, Lucy Gutman and Rita Kurz, who spoke and were interviewed by the student artists about their experiences in concentration camps. The students wanted to know how people survive horrific life events but still maintain dignity, integrity and compassion; and the artistic task for the students was to find the proper medium and method to best respond to this question. They also wanted their artwork to pay tribute to two women who, in the face of extraordinary abominations, managed not only to salvage their existence but to subsequently live full and productive lives in New York. The result is a large lucite “box” of approximately six feet in length, painted on both sides by students who have depicted scenes that bring the sisters’ story to
life. Each spring, the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center offers competitions for students centered on a theme of social justice, tolerance, and respect for diversity. The competitions offer students the opportunity to showcase their creative talents. Winning entries are exhibited at the Center and photographed for inclusion in its Competition Journal. The mission of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County is to teach the history of the Holocaust and its lessons, through education and community outreach. These include the dangers of antisemitism, racism, bullying and all other manifestations of intolerance, promoting resistance to prejudice and advocating respect for every human being. Usdan Center offers more than 40 programs in music, dance, theater, visual arts, creative writing, nature and ecology and chess, annually hosting more than 1,600 students from towns throughout the Tri-State New York area. No audition is needed for most courses, and transportation is provided in air-conditioned buses that depart from most New York-area neighborhoods. One-third of Usdan’s students receive scholarship assistance

Also, families can check out Usdan’s Facebook site, where additional information and late-breaking news is featured. Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts has introduced the arts to more than 60,000 Tri-State Area children since its founding in 1968. The Center is open to all young people from age 6 to 18. Although the mission of the Center is for every child to establish a relationship with the arts, the unique stimulation of the Center has caused many to go on to arts careers. Alumni include members of Broadway shows and major music, theater, and dance ensembles such as the Boston Pops and the New York City Ballet. In addition to its regular programs, Usdan offers special opportunities for advanced high schoolage performing and visual artists. These include Music Staff Internships, a Summer Ballet Intensive. Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright (right) attended Selections From Our Collection, hosted by the Three Village Historical Society at Bates House on Sunday, May 18th. Also in attendance were Assemblyman Steve Englebright (center) and Legislator Kara Hahn (left) who were honored for their hard work and assistance to the Historical Society over the years. “It was educational and enlightening to see all the projects undertaken by the Three Village Historical Society over the past halfcentury. The dedication of the Society’s members is evident in the exhibits, books, tours, and talks that have been shared
with the community,” said Councilwoman Cartright. The by-laws state that one goal of the Society is “to seek out and preserve all materials of an historic nature which pertain to the Three Villages” and the show did as much by highlighting 50 years of Setauket’s history from the archives of the Three Village Historical Society. The Historical Society was founded to document local Maritime history by Captain Edward Reginald Rhodes in 1964 and later provided funding to the Three Village Bicentennial Committee which produced the Spies Coin and published The Three Village Guidebook in the mid 1970s. In the 1980s, the
Society produced a theater program Eel Catching in Setauket and held its first major exhibit, Down the Ways, the Wooden Ship Era in the Three Villages. In 1995, the Society launched the mobile exhibit, The Sailing Circle: 19th Century Seafaring Women from New York, and in 1998 the first Three Village Historical Society headquarters were purchased at 93 North Country Road. In the most recent decade, the Society published several books on Three Village history and acquired a letter written by George Washington with the help of Assemblyman Englebright and Stony Brook University.
