ort Jefferson Middle School students recently competed in a cooking competition designed to emulate the Food Network’s Chopped series as part of the school’s new Cooking Club. During the competition, student audience members cheered on four students as they rivaled each other in timed cake decorating and smoothiemaking events. The in-school cooking club pairs cooking with social skills training.

On June 4th, Mercy Haven, Inc. will host its 16th Annual Golf Outing in an effort to raise critical funds for the agency which provides housing and support services to those who are homeless or living with mental illness. Empire National Bank Vice President and Branch Manager Dorothy Overton, who serves as Board Chair for Mercy Haven, emphasized Empire’s commitment to community issues like those addressed by Mercy Haven. “Everyone deserves safe and dignified

Eyes On The Sky By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time of year, I usually write a column on the importance of appreciating Memorial Day for its intended purpose, to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Too easily do we as a society become swept up in the “unofficial summer kickoff” mentality, of BBQs and pool openings and the beginning of beach season. That said, there is one other Memorial Day tradition that I do truly enjoy, which mixes the significance of the occasion with some good oldfashioned fun in the sun. I am speaking of the Jones Beach Air Show, held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I’ve been attending the
show for the last seven years or so, enjoying the alternating featured performances of both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. As a member of the press, I was even lucky enough to have the opportunity a few years back to meet and greet the Blue Angels’ pilots at an exclusive preview held at Republic Airport. What an extraordinary experience! The great part is that the show never gets old. The camaraderie of sitting on the sand, eyes to the sky, with tens of thousands of fellow spectators is something special. Over the last several years, I have endured everything from severe sunburns to shivering under layers of clothing, buried under my beach blanket… from breezing right in to a prime oceanfront spot to being
forced to park on the median of Ocean Parkway after sitting in traffic for hours. Each year, no matter the conditions, I have been able to capture stunning photographs and, most importantly, to make happy, lasting memories with friends. Sure, it may be a frivolous, fun day at the beach; but ultimately, we are appreciating the grand spectacle of our military aircraft at its finest. It is a beautiful site to behold, one that everyone should make a point of taking in at least once in his or her lives. This weekend, I plan to join the masses in making my way to Jones Beach once again – armed with sunscreen, and several extra layers of clothing – just in case. Happy Summer to all!

It is in this very moment where we must take a stand for what we believe in - whether it be happiness, success, traveling, relationships or making a difference. About ninety five percent of people lay dormant on their couch whilst helplessly gulping on their chips of potatoes. They allow life to pass them by, as if they’re going to live for an eternity. And we wonder why our lives are mundane. There is something inside your heart calling out for you to accomplish. It begins with a firing desire, task planning and massive execution. Do not allow the time it will take or any naysayers to back you down toward their advantage points. Why? Because every great outcome began as a microscopic vision. The vision proceeded by getting planted with soil, which took preparation. Next was water and nurturing and some sun - which denotes the action steps it
took to grow. A few months stroll by. The tiny seed transforms into an entity, astounded by others and blossomed to inspire others to aspire to do the same. I believe we are here for a reason. To create, build, make and invent. We are artists. We create how we live day in and day out. You possess the paintbrush of change, possibility and creativity. Part of other experiences occurring in our lives are inevitable; however, how we react is in our control. When there are dark skies, there are the brightest of stars. When there are heavy rains, there are the most breathtaking of rainbows. So, fellow reader, are you planting your seeds on mother earth - the place we call home? Because our bodies are capable of anything. It is our minds we must convince. The resources required are directly in front of us: The natural sun, plentiful water and the soil by which our feet rests. It all starts with one, single seed.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation for the Military Families in Training (M-FIT) Program. Given the stressful nature of the military and the traumatizing experiences of war, many veterans experience psychological distress that is complicated by substance use. Many of these veterans are experiencing serious mental health concerns including substance use disorders (SUD) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, depression and serious psychological distress (SPD). Due to the challenge of engaging veterans, LICADD will work to increase awareness of

as they rivaled each other in timed cake decorating and smoothing making events. The creations, made using a broad range of ingredients, including fruit loops, baby food, and frosting, were judged based on taste and presentation by a panel of judges. The competition aimed
to provide an opportunity for the students to practice their coping skills, including how to deal with high-pressure situations. The in-school cooking club is funded through a Royal Educational Foundation grant and pairs cooking with social skill training.
Robotics Team Honored The Port Jefferson School District Board of Education recognized the Earl L. Vandermeulen Robotics Team for their hard work during the Board’s regular meeting on May 12th.
During the recognition ceremony, team members provided a demonstration of their robot, which was constructed to maneuver garbage cans in a competition setting. The team most recently
competed in the 16th Annual Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition against more than 2,000 students from 50 high schools at Hofstra University.

Academic All-Americans
Matteo and Tristin DeVincenzo, members of the wrestling team at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, have been named to the 2015 High School Academic All-American team by the National High School Coaches Association. Matteo and Tristin are among only five students from New York who will be recognized in the National High School Sports Hall of Fame along with 114 athletes from 32 states. To
qualify, the students had to carry a 3.4 grade point average on a scale of 4.0 and be a state tournament place winner or selected as All-State at least once during their high school career. Both brothers hold county and state wrestling titles. Matteo, a junior, is a three-time state placer and holds a 2014 championship state title and a 112-4 career record. Tristin, a senior, has also placed at the state level and
has a 137-19 career record. He will be attending the University of Pennsylvania in the fall. “These two brothers are getting it done on the mat and in the classroom,” said Port Jefferson Wrestling Coach Mike Maletta “The sport of wrestling is highly demanding and to be successful one must be disciplined. Tristin and Matteo have set high standards for themselves in wresting and academics.”

regional quiz bowl recently at Plainview Old Bethpage High School. The Port Jefferson School District extends its congratulations to the
team, which competed against the top academic teams on Long Island for the second place win.

On May 8th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner honored recipients of the Town of Brookhaven’s Youth Bureau Volunteer Awards from Council District 2 during the 35th annual ceremony at Town Hall. The awards recognize volunteers from each Council District who work with and assist young people, whether they are individual adults, service
groups, or young people themselves. The event was hosted by the Town of Brookhaven Youth Board which is an advisory board to the Youth Bureau. “Congratulations to all of our Youth Volunteer award winners,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “Your commitment to helping the youth of our community is greatly appreciated and I thank you for making Brookhaven a

The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School has announced Noah Davis and Natalia Zaliznyak as the Class of 2015 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Davis and Zaliznyak have earned the top spots in their class through their impressive and outstanding commitment to academics. Davis has earned a number of academic accomplishments throughout his high
school career. He is an AP Scholar with Distinction, participates in Cold Spring Harbor’s Partners for the Future research program and is a member of the Science Olympiad team. In 2013, Davis was named a semifinalist in the Siemens Foundation Competition in Math, Science and Technology. He has also submitted for a patent for an environmentally friendly flame-retardant. Additionally, Davis is an athlete, playing on his school’s basketball and baseball teams. Davis plans to attend Duke University in the fall and study biomedical engineering. Zaliznyak has also received a number of academic accomplishments. She is an she is an AP Scholar with Distinction, a National Merit semifinalist and has participated in the
Siemens Science Research program at Stony Brook University. She is also a member of the Latin Club, and the academic and Science Olympiad teams. Outside of school, she teaches math enrichment and is part of a local Russian theater group. Zaliznyak plans to attend Yale in the fall and study Molecular biophysics. The Art League of Long Island’s Summer Portfolio Program, now in its 20th year, is back with a new lead instructor and a fresh new approach. Under the direction of Artist/Instructor Nikki Girgenti, teens ages 1417 will be able to fully immerse themselves in the creative process, develop a sense of camaraderie and community with their fellow artists, and expand their portfolios as they strive to set themselves apart as artists. The Summer Portfolio Program will help students understand the importance and the dynamics involved in creating an above average art portfolio, given the competitive nature of the college admissions process. Students will enjoy unique experiences, such as mock portfolio reviews, creating digital portfolios, guest speakers, and much more. This is a great opportunity for high school students to spend time developing their portfolios; whether they plan on applying to a BFA program, intend to submit an art supplement, or simply want to add to their breadth of artwork as they prepare for AP or IB art courses in High School. The Summer Portfolio sessions take place 9:30am to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills in two 3-week sessions: July 6th-24th and July 27th-August 14th. Nikki Girgenti is an
accomplished artist and educator who earned her MA at Stony Brook University and BA at Dowling College. With nearly a decade of teaching at the Art League, including two years of administrative experience in the League’s Summer Art Adventure Program, and eight years of teaching high school art, Girgenti brings a fresh approach combined with a strong record of success to the Summer Portfolio Program. She currently teaches 11th grade Portfolio and 12th grade Advanced Portfolio and has a reputation for guiding scores of students towards outstanding outcomes. Helpful Donation Shelter Island High School students, along with group advisor Janine Mahoney, have been long time supporters and volunteers of Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s Student Build Program. Most recently, the district received a donation from Shelter Island Presbyterian Church in the amount of $1,300, which they gifted to Habitat. Over
the years, the school has raised more than $9,000 and hundreds of SIHS students have participated in the program. In addition to their volunteer efforts the school has donated new building supplies and tools to Habitat projects. Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk encourages youth of all ages to get involved in the Long Island community. Each year,
young Long Islanders help with fundraising, building, office work and hospitality for volunteers and homeowners. Giving Back
In honor of “Giving Back Day,” the Service Club at Miller Place School District’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School involved the entire student body and community in a school-wide effort to give back to their local heroes. Approximately 700 students welcomed members of the police force, fire department, veterans and active duty soldiers into their classrooms to personally thank them for their sacrifices and present them with handmade crafts and thank-you cards. “We do our best to offer our students as many opportunities as possible to interact with members of our armed forces, veterans and everyday heroes,” said Dr. Marianne Higuera, Superintendent of Miller Place School District. “We aim to provide positive role models for our students and encourage them to act selflessly. Students are able to comprehend the significance of what these brave men and women do every day, and events like these allow them to show their appreciation.” Each grade created
personalized letters, cards, drawings, handmade bookmarks and spring crafts to send to residents and veterans of Echo Nursing Home in Port Jefferson, both local and New York City firefighters and police officers, residents of the local Veteran’s home and active duty soldiers stationed around the world. Members of the Service Club also had the opportunity to Skype with U.S. Army Private Leander Martin stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky via SMART Board.
