Earl L. Vandermeulen High School was the recipient of a plaque from the family of Ruth Gracey, a former physical education teacher in the Port Jefferson School District who was posthumously inducted into the 2020 Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame. The ceremony was postponed due to the pandemic and held on May 12, 2021.
Gracey, who served Port Jefferson students for more than 25 years before retiring in 1971, was also inducted into the high school’s Wall of Fame in 2018. She was noted as a pioneer in women’s athletics – one of the first to make field hockey an institution of Long Island sports, as well as introducing programs for women in basketball, track
and archery. “This is such an honor to share this artifact in our building,” Port Jefferson School District Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Nursing Adam Sherrard said. “Our numerous female-athletes can share the pride of this piece of important school history.”
University Virtual Gallery Visit For Port Jefferson Students Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Advanced Placement art students recently visited the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery at SUNY Stony Brook’s Staller Center for a virtual tour of the university’s senior art exhibit. The
students, along with art teacher Lauren Lewonka and Director of Music and Fine Arts, Dr. Michael Caravello, viewed the works. During the tour, Karen Levitov, director and curator for the gallery,
was accompanied by several university students who spoke about the techniques and inspiration behind their works as well as their experiences on campus life as both students and artists.

Meet the Reboli Center’s Artisan of the Month for May: Peter Nettesheim Collector and Restorer of BMW Motorcycles/Cars

The Reboli Center for Art & History is keeping on track with its current exhibit, Shifting Gears, which focuses on the “art” of transportation by selecting Peter Nettesheim as its Artisan for the Month of May. Nettesheim was chosen because the exhibit features both an original 1928 BMW motorcycle and a refurbished one from his private collection, and he is known for his extraordinary collection and knowledge, said Lois Reboli and BJ Intini, founders of the Reboli Center. Collecting and restoring cars runs in his family. His father was a Mercedes Benz collector, which spurred Peter’s interest in collecting, but he took a different route by going with BMW motorcycles
and cars as he thought the Mercedes was more of an old man’s car and the BMW sportier. Peter bought his first bike in 1979, and he has since created the world’s largest collection of BMW motorcycles. According to Peter, he has virtually every regular production model from 1923 through 1970 and another 35 or so of them after that date. He has now amassed a collection of more than 120 BMW cycles, including 10 cars. His passion is to collect and refurbish old and classic BMW motorcycles and cars. He has about 90 that are in perfect running condition. His massive collection of bikes, cars, artifacts and BMW memorabilia are displayed in a museum at his home in Huntington. Peter Nettesheim and his
collection are well known throughout the world and both are highly respected by those in the industry. Celebrities and motorcycle enthusiasts like Billy Joel, Jay Leno, Ryan Reynolds and Lyle Lovett have visited his home/ museum. Running Like The Wind A beautiful spring day was the backdrop for the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School Scraggy Walk/Run, an event that has taken place for more than two decades and brings smiles, laughter and some fun competition to the Port BIKES ON DISPLAY - Original and restored 1928 BMW motorcycles on display at Jefferson School District’s youngest students. The Reboli Center.
Wearing colorful class T-shirts and sneakers, the students did their best to complete the course that started behind the school for each grade level and down rolling hills and wooded trails to cross the finish line where they were met with cheers and applause from the socially
distanced spectators. The annual race helps to promote physical fitness and culminates a severalweek training period where students walked and ran and in their physical education classes with teachers Benjamin Bajus, Kevin Rowett and Francoise Schachner.

When she heard about the work that Paws of War does, helping soldiers to get their pets back to the U.S., and she turned to it for assistance. “Bubba is such a wonderful cat, and he greets me every time he sees me and purrs loudly whenever I pet him,” says Sgt. Rode. “I have formed such a great bond with him, it took me so long to gain his trust, and I can’t fathom the thought of leaving him behind once I get deployed back to the U.S. He has been a wonderful companion and provides me so much comfort when I need it most. I could not leave this cat behind to suffer and die. He trusts me, and I won’t let him down.” Paws of War is seeking the support of the community to cover the costs in order to bring Bubba back to the states to live out his life with Sgt. Rode. While the organization has helped many soldiers bring their rescued animals back, it’s a mission that is costly. Soldiers tend to rescue stray dogs and cats, and they form bonds with them that help them to find comfort during their time of deployment. With the help of donations from the community, they are able to cover the expenses that are involved in
such a mission. The organization has helped so many soldiers with this type of mission that it has created a strong network of support. It’s that network that helps them to navigate through the challenges and logistics of relocating a pet overseas, and to pay for the care, paperwork, and flight that is involved in the mission. acquired Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai in 2016 as a means of increasing their ability to serve more young men struggling with opioid addiction. This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills. The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff. Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home. Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. No one should ever feel that they need to suffer alone, that they are not being heard, that they can’t ask for help or that they are hopeless. While she didn’t set out to be, Army Sergeant Rode became an angel to a cat while serving in the Middle East. She’s on a mission to help Paws of War with the costs of rescuing her cat, which she named Bubba, back to the states with her since she has received new orders. It’s a mission that Paws of War can help her pull off, but only with the support of the community. This type of effort takes a village, and the organization is asking people to support Sgt. Rode, who is serving her country. “This is a story you can’t help but to love and want to get behind,” explains Dereck Cartright, a disabled veteran who is the stateside logistics coordinator at Paws of War. “Sgt. Rode saved Bubba, but there’s only so much she can do on her own” When Sgt. Rode first saw Bubba, he had given up. Bloody, frail, and injured, the cat ran from everyone. It was clear that he had been fighting for his life for a long time. Sgt. Rode knew she had to help. For days, she left food, waiting nearby to make sure he ate. Initially, he cried and backed away when he saw her, but eventually, he grew to trust her and allowed her to sit within just a few feet while he frantically ate the food she left. Slowly but surely, Bubba allowed her to get a little closer until, finally, Sgt. Rode was able to touch him. However, what she discovered horrified her. Old scars mixed in with new wounds that covered Bubba’s body. He had been through a lot and was timid, but once he felt the kind touch of Sgt. Rode, he immediately began purring, showing her the love and affection he had never been shown. She became Bubba’s angel, and he became her greatest joy while serving overseas, and they were essentially inseparable. Worry came back to her when she received new orders to head home, and it was clear that she would

Canoe And Kayak Storage Rack Program Just In Time For The Summer Season Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) and her colleagues in elected office joined with representatives from the Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers and Laborers Local 66 at Blydenburgh County Park to announce the launch of the “Suffolk County Canoe and Kayak Storage Rack Pilot Program”. Together, they unveiled the first of six storage racks for canoes and kayaks which will be located at various parks and beaches across the county beginning Memorial Day. This initiative, spearheaded by Majority Leader Legislator Berland, will allow residents to rent a space to lock their kayak or canoe for the entire season, making it easier and more convenient for them to enjoy the water in our county parks and beaches. The program was unanimously approved by both the Suffolk County Parks Trustees and then the Suffolk County Legislature at the May 11th General Meeting. The material and labor used to construct the racks were generously donated. The material by the Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers and the labor by Laborers Local 66. The program allows residents to purchase a seasonal sticker to place on their canoe or kayak. They will then be assigned a specific storage rack location and are responsible for providing their own device(s) to secure the canoe or kayak to the rack. The season will run from Memorial Day through Columbus Day and spaces will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. Storage racks will be located at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown, Southaven County Park in Brookhaven,
Lake Ronkonkoma County Park in Lake Ronkonkoma, Timber Point Golf Course in Great River, Indian Island County Park in Riverhead and Smith Point County Park Marina in Shirley. Permits can be purchased in-person through the Suffolk County Parks Department at the West Sayville Administration Building (200 Montauk Highway, West Sayville). Those interested in reserving a space may download the form online at https:// w w w. s u f f o l k c o u n t y n y. gov/Departments/ Parks/Doing-Business/ Seasonal-Kayak-CanoeStorage-Rentals. For Suffolk County residents who are Green Key Card holders there is a $100 fee for a seasonal permit and a $250 fee for nonresidents. “We are so fortunate to live in a place where we have beautiful waterways, beaches and parks,” said Legislator Susan A. Berland. “I sponsored this program to make it easier and more convenient for our residents to access and enjoy the water in our County parks and beaches. The great outdoors beckons people year-round, but nature is especially enticing in summer, when warm weather compels people to leave their couches and soak up some sun. • Leave the car at home. Americans and Canadians consume more gasoline per capita than any people in the world. • Vacation locally. Another way to help the planet when spending time outdoors this summer is to vacation locally. People who vacation close to home typically do not fly, and that’s a significant benefit to the planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes that aviation emissions release black carbon, nitrous oxide and sulphur oxide, which contribute to the greenhouse gas effect. And while the EIA notes that
automobiles and airplanes produce relatively similar amounts of carbon dioxide per gallon, airplanes burn considerably more fuel than cars, thanks in large part to the considerable amount of fuel planes burn on the runway. The Benefits Of Leisure Activities cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity
as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the
study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has
the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problemsolving, and map reading, among other
activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Buffalo State, where he has taught drawing and painting since 1997. His work is in numerous public and private collections, and has been shown internationally in Finland, China, Poland and the Czech Republic, as well as across the United States, earning numerous awards in many prestigious exhibitions. “I focus primarily on the human figure depicted in environments that create a context for psychologically charged, open ended narratives. Images of figures or figures in landscapes, in groups or in isolation, share a common feeling of significance. Wholly absorbed within themselves or the dialogue shared between one another, they wait for the unfolding of their private story.

primary inspiration. The unexpected colors and textures found in nature inspire Ron to capture the dynamics of light and dark; form and balance. As a realist, he uses tone and color to invite his audience to experience the moment captured on canvas. His preferred mediums of acrylic (for layering of color), or oil (for blending) are specifically chosen to create a sense of drama and movement. Ron is also a muralist and has done commissions for school districts, hospitals, nursing homes, municipalities, and private residences. Caryn Coville’s style is realism, and her work showcases
objects. Her award-winning work has been shown extensively in solo gallery exhibits and juried shows and her work is held in corporate and private collections throughout the United States and Canada. She has an extensive list of awards and credits for her amazing artwork. Lupe Galván grew up in rural Idaho among the farm lands of the Snake River valley, the historic land of the Shoshone people. He earned his MFA from The New York Academy of Art in 2009. Lupe’s personal cosmogony guides him to explore experiences of Indigenous roots and American life and express them through painting and drawing. Holden Willard is a 21 year old undergraduate student studying at the Montserrat College of Art. In May, he will receive his BFA in Painting, however his interests serve multiple mediums: printmaking, photography, performance, collage & woodworking. “My work is currently concerned with analyzing the effects of white male toxicity, specifically toxic masculinity. I’m mainly striving towards creating a dialogue between the past, present and future - be it through the lens of family, friends and environment. In my mind, these are essential devices that I utilize to create a coming of age narrative in rural Maine. Images from home, adventures of youth, fears and anxieties expressed through eyesight and posture - all in an effort of saying the unsaid.” Patty Yantz’ art is about personal reaction to a scene or location rather than an attempt at technical reproduction of that view. “Focusing on color, contrast and composition, I have found that close-up observation is a good tool for understanding different perspectives and developing conceptual awareness. After retiring from teaching secondary art Patty has immersed herself in her own art career. She works in Pastel, Acrylic and Watercolor, showing her works in juried and invitational exhibits across Long Island. “Nature is the underlying theme of all my work, with a major inspiration being the Long Island landscape.” STAC, a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization. National Fire Protection Association Says Use Caution When Using Grills According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated appliances. WebMD
advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area with cold water or a cold
compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the
late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993.
