Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk) is a non-profit organzation that operates a number of programs in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Based in Patchogue, EOC of Suffolk is dedicated to promoting selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals. Its programming largely centers on revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. One of this non-profit’s programs that serves people in Suffolk County and Nassau County is called Chronic Health Care Coordination. Managed by program director Delmarie Gotti, Chronic Health Care Coordination supports individuals with such chronic illness as HIV/AIDS, mental health-related conditions, heart disease, diabetes, asthma and hepatitis C. It also serves populations with obesity, substance abuse problems, sickle cell disease and other long-term conditions.

Because of their circumstances, and because of the day-to-day life challenges many participants face, it’s often difﬁcult for them to maintain a proper focus on the management of their chronic health needs. Many are jobless and many lack an adequate supply of food. Some are homeless or have lacked proper housing for years.

EOC of Suffolk team members help their clients “navigate the system.” They can assist with the filing of applications for various forms of public assistance. They may help connect participants with food pantries and help arrange assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps. Additionally, a support team from EOC of Suffolk can help clients find housing and even help arrange for the services of a moving company. If clients are grappling with behavioral or mental health issues, EOC staffers can help them get proper professional assistance. They’ll help participants get past possible stigmas often associated with mental illness. The EOC of Suffolk team can assist by lining up such support as therapeutic assistance, group therapy and medications. While individual care plans vary from client to client, the most common, long-term goal of the Chronic Health Care Coordination program is to help participants manage their personal health care needs, stabilize their lives, become independent and find work. Clients who achieve these goals “graduate” from the program, ready to move on with their lives on a firm foundation. challenge, dubbed Rapid React, tasked teams with using their robots to shoot balls into goals at assorted heights. Robots were also given 30 seconds at the end of each match to climb up a series of bars to garner additional points for their teams. The competition also provided for teams forming alliances with other schools, whom they would compete with in different challenges. In the Regional #1 competition, Miller Place formed an alliance with Center Moriches and Huntington. In the Regional #2 competition, Miller Place’s Entropy team scored high enough to be named an alliance captain. In this round of the competition, Miller Place teamed up with the Wheatly School in Old Westbury and international competitors from St. Michael’s School in the Dominican Republic. Despite not moving past the quarterfinals, Miller Place made it through six days of activity without a single mechanical failure. “Overall, I’m very happy with the way we

did, especially with not competing in two years due to COVID, stated Mike Stano, the team’s coach and a technology teacher at Miller Place High School. “We learned a lot from this year’s competition, which will allow us to make some changes that should result in us being more competitive at next year’s competition.” FIRST is a nonprofit based in Manchester, New Hampshire that was founded by inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen to inspire young people to pursue further studies and careers in science and technology. The nonprofit launched its competition in 1992. Miller Place first competed in 2001. Each year, FIRST invites about 50 schools from Long Island and additional schools from across the metropolitan area, the country and from around the globe. Students are given six weeks to design and build a robot that weights up to 120 pounds and fulfills a set of rules and challenges that change each year.

The Miller Place High School Robotics team finished in the top third of teams competing in the Regional #2 competition of the 2022 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Long Island Competition. In the Regional #1 round, Miller Place landed in the top 20 of the 39 teams competing. This is the first year the regional games, hosted by the School-Business Partnerships of Long Island at Hofstra University, were held in person since the start of the pandemic. The event was canceled in 2020 and held virtually last year. This year’s competition was held throughout the week of March 20 to March 26. The Miller Place team, named Entropy, finished Regional #1 with six wins, five losses and one tie. They came back strong in the Regional #2 competition with seven wins and three losses. Their performance enabled the team to reach the quarterfinals of the competition. The year’s regional

Options For Community Living’s 40th Anniversary Ruby Gala And Casino Night Honored Dale Cole And Brian Rooney Options for Community Living, Inc. recently celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a Gala and Casino Night at the Heritage Club in Bethpage. The event acknowledged honorees Dale Cole, Newsday/ Newsday Charities, and Brian Rooney, Mutual of America as well as the retirement of founding board member, Michael McClain. Two-hundred people attended the event, which raised over $75,000 for Options’ programs which help vulnerable Long Islanders live independently in the community. Yolanda Robano-Gross, CEO at Options for Community Living, Inc. introduced the evening by acknowledging the challenges of the last two years and recognizing Options employees for their commitment to the mission. “It has been my privilege, particularly these last two years, to lead and be part of the most caring, compassionate, and strong group of individuals that we call Team Options. Over 200 strong, our team worked tirelessly to ensure the safety, dignity, and care of more than 2,400 men, women, and children across Nassau and Suffolk Counties,” remarked Ms. Robano-Gross. Options recognized honoree, Dale Cole, Community Affairs Project Manager for Newsday, and the driving force behind Newsday Charities which provides vital support to local nonprofits. “Dale has impacted countless lives through her work,” stated Yolanda Robano-Gross. “Options has been the grateful recipient of support provided through Newsday Charities for many years, and we are thankful for Newsday’s efforts to activate Long Islanders in support of our communities most vulnerable residents.”

I applaud you all.” Options also recognized the contributions of honoree Brian Rooney, Senior Vice President, Mutual of America, and active supporter of area nonprofit organizations. “While Brian lends his support to multiple organizations, he is special to us,” said Yolanda Robano-Gross. “He recognizes the needs of nonprofit organizations and acts – by volunteering and through financial support. He believes in giving back

I feel privileged to have him in our corner.” In his acceptance speech, Brian Rooney credited his parents with “teaching him the right thing to do,” and acknowledged the staff at Options for Community Living, for their compassion and kindness. Addressing the audience Brian said, “This is why I am so proud to support Options and the amazing work accomplished by their employees.” The Gala also celebrated retiring founding board member Michael McClain who encouraged everyone to “remain vigilant” as advocates for those in need of assistance, and a moving testimonial was provided by Options’ employee Michele M. Michele is a resident in Options’ supportive housing and works as a peer specialist helping support others in their recovery from mental illness. Sharing her life

Meet the Reboli Center’s May Artisan: Chris Wagner, Chainsaw Carveing Connoisseur

Chris Wagner was born and raised on Long Island and resides in West Sayville. He is a trained chef and director of food services at a health care facility. It was while that he was working as a chef and researching ice sculpting that he added another dimension to his career. He was enamored by the technique of carving, all be it a bit dangerous, but was compelled to learn the trade. In the summer of 2013 he spent several days learning the basic techniques with wellknown carver Barre Pinske at his studio in Vermont. He left with a new creative side job and a love of the medium. Over the years he developed his craft and was able to establish a shop at a local firewood distribution center – provided with a continuous source of discarded wood and an area

conducive to the level of noise he generates during his creative process. Chris Wagners’s statues are primarily animals, very detailed oriented. His pieces are carved with a massive blade. He brings birds and animals to life in a variety of woods. When completed, he uses a blowtorch to burn a smooth finish on each design. This technique illustrates the natural grain in the wood and adds a depth to each piece. To withstand inclement weather, the final step is to stain the work after a relief cut is installed in the back of the sculpture to preserve the wood. Consequently, with chainsaw carving, no two pieces are alike so each one is a one-of-a kind original work of art. He does accept commissions, so please contact The Reboli Center. Reboli’s work and he was an amazing artist. I am so honored and thankful to be able to show my work in a museum named for him.” Lois Reboli, president and founder of The Reboli Center said, “This is the first time we have had a chainsaw carving sculptor as our artisan of the month. We are so proud to feature his unique and whimsical work. It is a wonderful addition to our current “Bloom” and floral exhibit at the Center. The Jazz Loft To Beneﬁt From A Wide Variety Of Grants The Jazz Loft in Stony Brook will be benefiting from numerous grants in 2022 that will fund a variety of educational programming and music events. One grant will partner the Jazz Loft with the Helping Hand Mission in Huntington Station for a free concert at the Huntington Assembly of God, located at 1700 New York Avenue, in Huntington Station. “We are filled with gratitude that this funding will assist us in providing some new and exciting opportunities to bring more live music into the lives of more and more people,” said Jazz Loft Founder Thomas Manuel. The Huntington Station concert is funded by a $3,000 Restart New York grant. Restart NY Regrants are offered as part of NYSCA’s Recovery Fund Initiative meant to help support New York’s return to live performance and in-person events. “This grant will enable the Jazz Loft to bring music to a community that may not ordinarily have the access or resources to experience it,” said Manuel. Manuel said he will be presenting the Jazz Loft’s program Operation Creole Love Song, featuring a six-piece ensemble band, performing a mix of traditional Haitian music, along with Cuban and American jazz. The free concert is scheduled for June 14 at 7 p.m. at Huntington Assembly of God, located at 1700 New York Avenue, in Huntington Station. Jazz Loft to benefit from gifts & grants for programming •The Loft School of Jazz has received a $10,000 award from the philanthropic foundation of Long Island singing legend Billy Joel and his wife, Alexis. The grant will be used for tuition assistance scholarships for students in the jazz program. The Loft

School of Jazz is a college preparatory program for young jazz musicians and gives them the opportunity to advance their improvisation, ensemble and musicianship skills and broaden their musical horizons with the guidance of an exceptional and devoted faculty at the Jazz Loft. “We are absolutely thrilled and filled with gratitude to Billy and Alexis Joel and The Joel Foundation for this grant which will enable us to offer tuition assistance scholarships to students in need,” said Manuel. Loft School of Jazz Assistant Director Chris Donohue said that the grant will allow the school to offer full and partial scholarships to approximately 10 students who exhibit financial need. •Music programming at the Jazz Loft will also benefit from two new grants in 2022: A new foundation grant from the Paige and Otto Marx, Jr. Foundation will go towards programming, including two special performances of Duke Ellington’s Far East Suite on Thursday, June 2 and Friday, June 3. The Far East Suite is a 1967 concept album by Ellington, inspired by his group’s 1963 tour of Asia. Ellington and longtime collaborator Billy Strayhorn wrote the compositions. The album won the Grammy Award in 1968. •A gift from the Herbert M. and Naomi R. Leavitt Family Charitable Trust will sponsor a July 7 performance by the Jazz Loft Big Band. •A gift from the Zoe Oka Living Trust will sponsor a July 2 performance by Vince Giordano and the Night Hawks. Bandleader Giordano will be bringing his vintage-style 1920s/30s music to the Loft for one night only. Giordano’s credits include many high-profile TV and movie music projects, including

Boardwalk Empire; and the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. With Memorial Day And The Summer Months Approaching, NFPA Offers Safe Grilling Tips And Recommendations To Help Reduce Fires And Injury Often considered the unofficial kick-off to summer, Memorial Day weekend typically includes lots of celebrations and cookouts, often with grilling as a focal point. As the holiday, and summer months, grow closer, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reminds everyone of basic safety tips to grill and celebrate safely. Fire departments responded to an average of 10,600 home fires annually involving grills, hibachis, or barbecues according to NFPA’s research from 20142018. This includes 4,900 structure fires and 5,700 outside or unclassified fires. These fires resulted in an annual average of 10 civilian deaths, 160 civilian injuries, and $149 million in direct property damage. The peak months for grilling fires are July (18 percent), June (15 percent), May (13 percent), and August (12 percent), though grill fires occur year-round. Leading causes of grill fires include failing to clean the grill, the heat source being located too close to combustible

materials, leaving equipment unattended, and leaks or breaks in the grill or fuel source. “As grilling season approaches, it is important to review basic safety tips especially if the grill hasn’t been used over the winter,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA. “Establishing a firesafe location for using your grill is also crucial, to make sure it is a safe distance from your home and other items that can burn.” A yearly average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills. Nearly half (9,500 or 48 percent) of the injuries were thermal burns, including both burns from fire and from contact with hot objects; 5,200 thermal burns per year were caused by such contact or other non-fire events. Children under five accounted for an average of 2,000, or 39 percent, of the contact-type burns per year. These burns typically occurred when someone, often a child, bumped into,

touched, or fell on the grill, grill part, or hot coals. NFPA offers these tips and recommendations for enjoying a fire-safe grilling season: For propane grills, check the gas tank for leaks before use in the months ahead. (Watch NFPA’s video on how to check for leaks.) Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Place the grill well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area. If you use starter fluid when charcoal grilling, only use charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. When you have or are finished grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container. Never leave your grill unattended when in use.

Port Jefferson SD To Hold Special Meeting To Discuss Capital Bond Projects The Port Jefferson School District will hold a special board of education meeting for community members to discuss the proposed capital bond projects slated for a December

2022 vote. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 7, at 7 p.m., in the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School auditorium. At the meeting, the community will be apprised of the proposed

projects and cost; receive feedback from the district’s Community Advisory Panel; in addition, allow for public comment.

Miller Place Daisies Show Their Green Thumbs At Andrew Muller Primary School Rows of pink tulips and multicolored pansies adorn the entrance to Andrew Muller Primary School thanks to a group of the school’s students in Girl Scouts/Daisy Troop 960. The young Scouts planted the spring flowers, which were donated by local garden center GardenWorx LI, at the entranceway of their elementary school to celebrate spring and spread joy to their teachers and classmates as they enter and leave the building. “I’m so proud of these girls for creating such a beautiful display for staff and students to see as they come and go to school. What a great way to welcome the new season and give back to the Miller

Place community,” AMPS Principal Laura Gewurz said. The project is part of the Girl Scout’s commitment to make their community and the world a better and more beautiful place. Through the beautification effort, the Scouts completed their Flower and Garden Journey badges. Earning the Flower and Garden Journey badge includes exploring the world of gardening, starting a mini garden at home, learning about composting and learning how insects like ladybugs and bees help flowers grow. Daisy Scouts also take a field trip to a public garden and talk to a gardener or beekeeper.

Once all the above is completed, Scouts earn three leadership awards – the Watering Can Award, Golden Honey Bee Award and Amazing Daisy Award. Then, Scouts plan a “Take Action” project that involves bringing what they learned to their community through a beautification project. Students who contributed to the project at Andrew Muller Primary School and earned their badges included Molly Samonas, Jessie Maldonado, Delaney Kruse, Ellie Jackowski, Hailey Fisher, McKenna Stingo, Sadie Pachter, Elaina Giannino, Lylah Anschel, Lilah Ebert and Addie Lafler.

History is in the making with the Port Jefferson School District fielding its first varsity girls golf team. With little participation in high school softball the last few years, the district was seeking ways to increase female participation in athletics during the spring season. This paved the way for the golf team. Earl L. Vandermeulen High School physics teacher as well as the girls varsity volleyball and basketball coach Charles Hafner helped to spearhead the program. “Mr. Hafner held multiple student interest meetings, coordinated

with the Port Jefferson Country Club and designed uniforms for our girls golf team,” District Athletic Director Adam Sherrard said. “With his experience in the sport of golf and coaching female sports in our district, he was the ideal candidate to coach the new team.” All 18 members of the golf team – Aiden Barrett, Annie Byrne, Lauren Calendrille, Gwen Connell, Ava Cooper, Lina DeLeo, Petra Kundic, Maddy Matvya, Annie McKeown, Angelina Orofino, Kiki Parmegiani, Julia Perrotta, Sophie Peterson, Ava Reilly, Tabitha Schully, Sophia Wennerod, Amy Whitman

and Gretchen Zimmerman – have been putting in the effort to improve every day of practice. This determination paid off as the team earned the first win in program history in their match against Connetquot recently, led by Gwen, Ava Cooper, Maddy, Julia, Ava Reilly and Tabitha. “I look forward to the continued growth of the program and anticipate a junior varsity girls golf team in the future which will provide more opportunity for our students to compete against other schools,” Sherrard said.

PSEG Foundation Awards United Way Of Long Island $45,000 Grant For Its Vetsbuild Program The PSEG Foundation has awarded United Way of Long Island a $45,000 grant toward VetsBuild, a program which provides career training and employment opportunities for Long Island veterans and their families. The grant will make possible a hands-on education in green construction for 25 veterans as they work to transform the United Way of Long Island headquarters in Deer Park, New York, into a Net Zero building that produces as much energy as it uses. Veterans will shadow licensed construction professionals to help install more than 550 PV Panels at the United Way of Long Island facility, gaining experience that will help them find employment in the growing field of renewable energy, which is expected to support thousands of new jobs over the next five years. “PSEG is proud to be a long-time supporter of United Way of Long Island,” said Calvin Ledford Jr. President PSEG Foundation. “We are always looking for ways to foster sustainability and economic empowerment in the communities we serve and the VetsBuild program is especially important to us to expand the workforce of professionals who design, build, and implement renewable energy in our region. By harnessing the talent of veterans and reducing barriers to skilled employment by culturally diverse, underserved people, we all reap the rewards.” “Our thanks to PSEG for providing this important grant,” said Theresa A.
