As a result of their submissions, Arrowhead Elementary School students Nickolette Costigan, Jillian Gallagher, Ava LaRusso, Caly Reischman, Adam Wain and Lexi Wilcken were named winners in this year’s Long Island Speech and Hearing Association poster contest. Participants from several schools across Long Island submitted original

works of art to help illustrate the importance of “communication” in celebration of May being named Better Speech and Hearing Month. Each of the winning Arrowhead students will receive a monetary prize and be honored at an awards ceremony and reception held on May 22nd in Westbury, New York. In addition to the poster contest submissions,

Arrowhead’s speechlanguage therapeutic program teachers worked to highlight “communication” throughout their school this May. Their efforts including sharing tips for teachers, associated quotations read on the morning announcements and small posters placed in the hallways.

The Summer Swing Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.

Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

Ward Melville High School students Shannon Berry and Odeya Rosenband were named the first- and second-place winners, respectively, in the Suffolk County Asian American Advisory Board Wellbrook Foundation and JEI Learning Center of Stony Brook’s 2017 Social Harmony Writing Contest. The main purpose of this writing contest was for students to come up with ideas on how to promote cultural understanding and social harmony. Students were encouraged to participate in the contest to write an essay, explaining what we can do to improve race and ethnic relations. They used personal experience, observation, current events, history and literature to support their ideas.

On May 6th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner held her fifth biannual “Go Green” event at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mount Sinai, which included an E-Waste Drive, Pharmaceutical Drug Take Back, and Paper Shredding. The successful event allowed residents to safely dispose of unwanted prescriptions and medications and recycle old electronic

products and paper. The Pharmaceutical Take Back was co-sponsored by Councilwoman Bonner and Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco. Recently, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Jane Bonner joined the Rocky Point Lions Club at the Wading River Elementary School and the Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School to speak with students about Arbor Day and to hand out tree seedlings. The Lions Club sponsored the event to renew interest in Arbor

Day while enhancing our local environment. More than 900 fourth grade students from five north shore schools are joining students across the nation by taking home a free Norway spruce tree seedling to plant at their homes as part of the “Fourth Grade Foresters USA” program, which was created to provide a simple and inexpensive way for any individual, business

or organization to send the fourth grade students home with a tree of their own to plant and care for. In 2016, the Town was designated as a “Tree City USA” by the National Arbor Day Foundation and in his 2015 State of the Town Address, Supervisor Romaine announced his “Greening Brookhaven” initiative to plant 10,000 trees by 2020.

Students from Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School in the Miller Place School District recently donated dozens of stuffed animals and toys to sick children and seniors at St. Charles Hospital. Students throughout

the school participated in a month-long toy drive in order to collect as many toys as they could, involving family, friends and the community in their efforts. The purpose of the toy drive was to help students become

involved in service and the community. Hundreds of students from Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School in the Miller Place School District recently celebrated the school’s annual Give Back Day, during which they hosted local heroes and thanked them for their service. More than 50 local police officers, firefighters, veterans and soldiers Dr. Joseph Rella (Ed.D), Superintendent of the Comsewogue School District, recently invited Mr. Roger Tilles, N.Y. State Regent for the 10th Judicial District, to visit with his students and staff. Mr. Tilles, who represents Long Island schools as part of the New York State Board of Regents, took Dr. Rella up on the invitation on Tuesday morning, April 25th. While visiting the high school, Dr. Rella presented Mr. Tilles with a letter from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools accrediting Comsewogue as a school that provides a quality education and accountability, an achievement that will take effect on May 1st for a period of 7 years! Mr. Tilles had the opportunity to visit with students, staff, and administration at Boyle Road Elementary

School, John F. Kennedy Middle School, and Comsewogue High School. Several members of the Comsewogue School District Board of Education joined Mr. Tilles on his tour of the district. Mr. Tilles was serenaded by the JFK Middle School 8th grade chorus, before touring the school and talking to students and staff about the many innovative and creative classroom units the students were involved with. He and Dr. Rella included a visit to a classroom where students had been working with 3-D printers, designing tracks to be used by clever handheld ‘robots’. Moving on to Boyle Road Elementary School, Mr. Tilles took part in a classroom lesson eagerly participating in one his favorite school activities: reading some of his favorite poems, and listening to thoughtful poems written

by the students! Third grade students were animated in reacting to a few of Mr. Tilles’ favorite poems, and were proud to be able to share their work with this thoughtful New York State Regent. The last stop on the district tour was a visit with Comsewogue High School ‘Consortium’ students and staff who were eager to share their interest and experiences working with the ‘Consortium model’. This model is used by 28 schools across New York State, and Comsewogue is hoping to join this group, moving forward. Dr. Rella and the entire community thanks Mr. Tilles for visiting with Comsewogue students and staff, and for his continued dedication to quality education for New York students.

Continuing a Legacy

Rocky Point High School’s varsity baseball team recently held its fourth annual Live Like Susie Scholarship Fundraising game, which was played in memory of Rocky Point alumna Susie Facini. The team played the early May game against Mount Sinai varsity baseball after working for weeks

under the direction of coach Andrew Aschettino gathering donations and creating commemorative T-shirts, all in support of the annual scholarship. This year, thanks to the generosity of both teams, Rocky Point baseball raised more than $600 in a matter of hours for the worthy cause. That same week was

made even sweeter for Rocky Point baseball, as coach Aschettino reached a professional milestone – his 200th career game win. To help celebrate, the team surprised him with a little celebration during the Live Like Susie Scholarship game, complete with a commemorative cake made by Mrs. Facini.

Three teams from R.C. Murphy Junior High School performed exceptionally well at this year’s Suffolk County Math Teachers Association Math League events and each took home first-place prizes. The seventh-grade team A, eighth-grade team C, and ninth-grade team A took first place for their divisions. On top of that, seventh-grade team A and ninth-grade team A took first place for the county. Murphy’s math team is a club that meets once a week from October to February. Students work on mathematics problems

and compete monthly in different events. During the competitions, the students are separated by grade level and given a series of five questions, which get progressively harder. The scores are based on correct answers and tallied throughout the season. The team with the highest score at the end of the season wins the division. Those same scores are used to establish which teams have the highest scores for the county. The Three Village School District proudly congratulates the following team members:

Tree City USA result of the Supervisor’s “Greening Brookhaven” initiative to plant 10,000 trees by 2020. The Tree City USA program was established in 1976 as a nationwide movement that provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their

public trees. Tree City USA status is achieved by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

On May 11th, the Brookhaven Town Disability Task Force held an event at Town Hall to bring together organizations that provide services to children with disabilities. The meeting was conducted by Task Force Chairwoman Marlene Patti and provided an opportunity for representatives to explain services offered by their organization. It also brought a greater sense of awareness of programs that are available for youth, while simultaneously allowing those who participated to expand their referral lists. By working with these organizations, the Task Force will continue to create partnerships to develop more opportunities for children in Brookhaven Town. On September 30th, 2014, Supervisor Ed Romaine and the Town Board passed resolution 2014-672 establishing the Town of Brookhaven’s

Disability Task Force. The mission of the Task Force is to provide the Town Board with information and recommendations. They will advise the Town in its continuing efforts to offer equal opportunities for residents with disabilities to be active members of our community. emergency and nonemergency events. It is also outfitted with stateof-the-art communication equipment enhancing the Suffolk County FRES’s team and their partners’ ability to communicate when responding and coordinating with law enforcement and fire suppression personnel.

intervention services to at-risk children, individuals, and families across the region. With offices in Westbury and Holbrook, LICADD conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. The agency also conducts evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and participates in public policy advocacy.

Discovering Recovery The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) celebrated possibility, hope and promise at the 30th Annual Angel Ball. Three hundred and twenty-five LICADD supporters and friends came together to note a year of milestones in the addiction and recovery arena. The filled to capacity crowd, raised over $310,000 enabling LICADD to continue it’s important and vital work of service, support, prevention education and advocacy. At the height of an opioid crisis on Long Island, this successful event was a positive stride in the fight to support those individuals and their

families who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. The Angel Ball paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Adele C. Smithers. A good friend and advocate for LICADD, she has been dubbed the “godmother” of research, education, prevention and recovery in the field of alcohol abuse and drug dependence. Her guidance, leadership and generosity will remain guiding principles for LICADD, as the agency furthers its 61year mission for years to come. Of Adele Smithers, LICADD Executive Director, Steve Chassman shared, “Amid the sad reality of Adele’s passing, there has been tremendous

opportunity and strides forward. Adele left us a blueprint for what it means to dedicate a life to community service, to lend a voice for those who have none, and to work diligently to confront inequity and injustice.” In tribute to Adele Smithers, the Angel Ball was renamed, The Adele Smithers Angel Ball. The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation, led by Adele’s son, Christopher Smithers, his wife, Nikki and family were on hand to accept the honor. Commissioner Timothy D. Sini of the Suffolk County Police Department was honored as LICADD Community Champion.

LICADD applauded Commissioner Sini’s approach to addressing the opioid epidemic. Under his leadership, the Suffolk County Police Department offers rehabilitation rather than incarceration for youthful drug offenders. With Commissioner Sini’s support, LICADD and Suffolk County have partnered to operate a 24-hour substance abuse hotline. This successful program is entering its second year.
