Honoring the military Although Memorial Day pays homage to the brave people who perished fighting for their country, it also is an opportunity to recognize the military men and women and their families who continue to work to ensure the freedom of Americans. The United States Armed Forces is renowned for its size and strength. Various sources suggest the size of the United States military is somewhere between 1.4 and 1.6 million active service people. The military is comprised of the Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Each of these military branches also has its own reserves. There are many ways to honor active,
reserve and former veterans, as well as those who died in service of their country. • Help Veterans of Foreign Wars distribute red poppies as a visual reminder of the military’s efforts. • Volunteer at a veterans’ hospital or visit a wounded veteran at home. • Offer financial, legal or career expertise through the Corporation for National & Community Service (serve. gov). • Help to maintain the veteran area of a nearby cemetery. Place flags on all of the graves. • Befriend military families who frequently relocate, making a concerted effort to welcome them into your community. • Educate children about past wars and the services the military provides. • Visit a military museum or historic site. • Observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 pm local time for one minute. • Post a message to the troops at the USO website (uso.org).

Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. On May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30th was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.
It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the south began to recognize it as well.

PJ Student Performs All-Eastern Earl L. Vandermeulen High School student Ava Schully recently performed in the National Association for Music Education All-Eastern music conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A senior, Ava is a cellist who was accepted first as an All-State musician, and then selected to perform following a
rigorous application process; representing the finest student musicians throughout the Eastern Division. “On behalf of the school district, we congratulate Ava on her outstanding musical achievement,” said Dr. Michael Caravello, the Port Jefferson School District’s director of music and fine arts.

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

The Mathematical Association of America has recognized senior Annalisa Welinder and sophomore Grant Samara for their achievement in the American Math Competition 12 and AMC 10, respectively. The exam, which was administered
nationwide, consisted of 25 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 60 minutes. The main purpose of the exams is to spur interest in mathematics and develop talent through the excitement of solving challenging problems.
The AMC 10 covers the high school curriculum up to 10th grade. The AMC 12, open to high school seniors, covers the entire high school curriculum including trigonometry, advanced algebra and advanced geometry, but excluding calculus.
“We are so proud of the accomplishments of Grant and Annalisa,” math teacher Dennis Christofor said. “These exams help further their analytical skills and are a great opportunity to continue to master their mathematical talents.”

Ward Melville Health Challenge the day with the health and safety coordinator at Northwell Health. They learned just what that job entailed and how this coordinator needs to work with many different departments in the medical field in order to make the business of
health care run smoothly for staff, families and patients combined. The safety coordinator works with the environmental administrator, the physician’s assistant, to the lab technician specialist, training them to help provide the best possible
care for everyone. Before concluding the day, the students met with their peers from all throughout Long Island to learn about the different career opportunities available to them and network about their similar interests.

Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. This organization started as an idea to help one wounded child. This child was eight years old at the time and was so frightened of his perpetrators that he would not leave his residence. Their founder, having had kind and loving experiences with bikers in his youth, was moved to include this boy in his biker circle. Within weeks this boy was seen all over town playing with other children and riding his bike. The idea to rally the biker community in defense and in support of children was actualized in 1995, when the first ride was held to visit wounded children and bring them into the biker family. That first ride had twenty seven bikes present. From there it was only a matter of time before the word spread quickly about what was happening in Utah. Shortly after forming the first chapter in Utah, another chapter was formed in that state, then Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas. The rest is part of the B.A.C.A. history. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group! The brotherhood and family values are not just a
way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore. If you want to meet a B.A.C.A. representative and find out additional information on their organization you can attend one of the following upcoming events, where B.A.C.A. will have a tent set up with brochures and more: Alive After Five: Thursday, June 27, 2019 in Patchogue. The Great South Bay Music Festival: Saturday, July 20, 2019 and Sunday, July 21, 2019 in Patchogue. If you are interested in becoming a B.A.C.A. member you must meet certain requirements. Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). You can also donate to this organization at anytime on their website. PJ Students Visit Ellis Island Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students recently visited the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. Chaperoned by French teacher Heather Marshak and English as a second language teacher Jennifer Walling, who are co-advisers to the
International Club, the students researched their ancestors who walked through the Great Hall when they entered the United States so many years ago. “It was amazing,” Walling said. “So many of the students found
their ancestors’ names, sometimes four or five great aunts, grandparents; seeing their names brought them excitement and pride. They asked engaging questions and left the visit with great memories.”

Global Impact The Port Jefferson Middle School National Junior Honor Society recently hosted a shoe drive for the Soles4Souls initiative. The ambitious project resulted in collecting more than 120 pairs of shoes for the organization that serves people around the world by helping to disrupt the cycle of poverty. “Our students used community engagement to provide new opportunities for those in need while having a positive impact on the environment,” co-adviser and special education teacher Christina Marino

Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and
check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great crossreference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your
security patch and antivirus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards.
The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your
car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are
bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it.
