Immigration Simulation
A
s an extension of their social studies curriculum, fifthgrade students at W.S. Mount Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District stepped back in time when they participated in an immigration simulation. Prior to the event, the students researched a family member who had immigrated to the United States and then created a fictional individual based on their research. Students dressed and acted as the individuals they embodied.

Well, barring any unforeseen circumstances (fingers and flippers crossed), tomorrow will mark Buddy the Betta’s much anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few flakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I
don’t even need to flip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to briefly dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. Curious, I decided to do a little research to see A.) if Bettas have actual teeth (they do); B.) if they can harm humans with aforementioned teeth (not so
Apparently, as long as you thoroughly wash your hands and don’t immerse your entire hand in the bowl, you can even gently pet your Betta on the back. How sweet! I went on to read that, in most cases, these extremely intelligent fish can even be trained to perform simple tricks, such as “jumping” to get their food, spreading their fins in front of a mirror, and responding to feeding time by waiting in a set spot for the prized flakes. Well, we’ve definitely mastered that last one. On to the rest of the circus tricks! Happy Birthday Buddy. Here’s to many more…

School champions then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society to receive eligibility to compete in the state “Bees.”
If Mari is chosen as the New York State champion, he will receive $100, the National Geographic Atlas of the World, 10th Edition, a medal and a trip to Washington D.C. to represent New York State in the National Geographic Bee nationwide championship in the middle of May.

History Bee Buffs Three Port Jefferson School District students have qualified to compete in the National History Bee, which will be held in Kentucky on Memorial Day weekend. The students, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School fifth-grader
Andrew Patterson and Port Jefferson Middle School students, eighthgrader Annalisa Welinder and sixth-grader Lucas Welinder, won their spots following their successful participation in the regional finals in Bridgeport Conn.
The students, along with middle school students Cameran Cohen, an eightgrader and Arron Held, a sixth grader, received high scores on the online ORQE exam, which qualified them for the regional competition.

During ALS Awareness Month, Rocky Point Middle School sought to continue to support efforts to raise funds for ALS research by donating more than $600 to the ALS Ride for Life event this May. The funds, which had been raised as a result of
a National Junior Honor Society fundraiser, were presented during the ride’s annual one hundred plus mile patient wheelchair ride across Long Island. Ride participants stopped at the school as they worked their way across Long Island. Present
at the event were Ride for Life President Chris Pendergast, Dr. Frank Verdone and other ALS patients.
Rocky Point High School seniors Lauren McBreaty, Joseph Niver and Brittany Rinaldi have been named the Class of 2015 valedictorian, salutatorian
and exhortation speaker, respectively. In the fall, Lauren is bounded for Cornell University, Joseph will study political science
at Vassar College and Brittany will attend West Point, where she will also compete on the lacrosse team.

During the national competition, the students were tasked with modifying a plane in a flight simulator program and then fly a course. The students selected a biplane and worked to maximize its specs for a 37 nautical mile trip. The statistics of
the flight was calculated and the best wing design was crowned the winner. Only 100 students were accepted to this nationwide contest, which was designed to promote science, technology, engineering and math skills.

Scientific Stars Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School firstgrader Jennifer Tiskowitz was named a first place winner at the 2015 Brookhaven National Lab Science Fair for her project “Keep My Craft Colorful.” Jennifer’s project examined the effect several common household items
have on a colorful craft left in the sun. Her experiment noted that Pledge protected the item best when left to the elements for six days. In addition, FJC secondgrader Caiden Palank and Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School fourth-grader Mikayla Minton won honorable
mention in their respective categories. Caiden’s project was titled “Sock Science” and focused on which sock materials kept feet the warmest. Mikayla’s project was title “Bath or Shower” and focused on which saved more water.

As an extension of their social studies curriculum, fifth-grade students at W.S. Mount Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District stepped back in time when they participated in an immigration simulation. Prior to the event, the students researched a family member who had immigrated to the United States and then created a fictional individual based on their research. On the day of the immigration simulation, the students dressed and acted as
that individual as they embodied his or her persona. Once inside the cafeteria, or “Ellis Island,” they began the process of becoming an immigrant. Parent and staff volunteers were on hand in the school’s mini-gym monitoring the different immigration stations, which checked the immigrants’ background, vocation, character and health, and ultimately cleared them for citizenship. Once accepted as citizens, the students were asked
to review a copy of the federal constitution, were given a commemorative U.S. citizen identification card stamped with their fingerprints and were asked to recite the Loyalty Oath. At the conclusion of the program, the fifth-graders gathered in the auditorium to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and the Loyalty Oath in unison. Rocky Point High School’s SADD club is working to reduce the number of teen drivingrelated crashes and save lives through their participation in the “Teen Crashes GTG (Got to Go)” campaign. The school kicked off its participation in the campaign by creating slogans that promoted safe teen driving and chalked them onto the high school
walkway. Throughout the week, students also participated in an assembly from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Patricia Brosco presented on the dangers of drunk driving and also informed juniors and seniors of the laws in New York and the full gamut of consequences they face for a single no accident arrest up to a

Submitted by Denise M. Poveromo... My neighbor recently found a mother duck who had made a nest in her front yard, in a little garden near a big oak tree. I went over and was amazed to see that no squirrels, dogs, cats, etc. have bothered her! The mother duck sits proudly on the nest she has made with her feathers. There are several eggs she nestles upon each day, and only leaves briefly. I managed to snap a quick shot of her, so as not to scare her. She will probably have the chicks sometime in mid-June. This cute Copiague mama duck is the talk of all the neighbors! We all wait anxiously for the arrival of her babies.
