Staying Power I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field. I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these
obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold. Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this influx of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation. The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what

is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio. Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated. Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day. My, how times have changed. Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.

During the district’s late April meeting, the Three Village Central School District recently honored and celebrated P.J. Gelinas Junior High School English teacher Douglas Elliot. He was awarded excellence in civics education by the Federal Bar Association for his outstanding achievement
as an educator of interdisciplinary studies and the civics. Mr. Elliot has served as the adviser of the district’s award winning and welldecorated mock trial team and was instrumental in creating an introductory junior high school program at Gelinas this year. Mr. Elliot is pictured here with

Rocky Point High School and the Rocky Point Athletic Program has been awarded the Scholar-Athlete School Award of Distinction from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. This award was presented to the district as all 23 Rocky Point varsity teams were recognized this school year as NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete teams. In
order to receive the scholar athlete team award, the team is required to have 75 percent or more of their team with an average above 90 percent. “This award is a great honor for our district and congratulations goes out to the student-athletes, coaches, teachers and parents on this incredible accomplishment,” said Rocky Point Director of Health, Physical
Education, Intramurals and Athletics. “Thank you so much for your time, dedication and hard work in helping the students achieve this honor.” Only a select number of schools throughout the state qualify for this honor each year. In 2016, only 32 schools throughout the state received the honor, seven of which were in Suffolk County.

The awards recognize residents from each council district who help and assist young people, whether they are individual adults, service groups or young people themselves. The event
was organized by the Brookhaven Youth Board and Youth Bureau. The Youth Board serves as an advisory board to the Youth Bureau. The Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s mission is to support and encourage the moral, physical, mental and social well-being of youth in Brookhaven Town. This is accomplished

an informative town hall assembly. During the event, the senator spoke about the difference in state and federal government, how he came to serve and the different types of laws that affect today’s youth,

Capturing Memories Ward Melville High School’s award-winning 2015-2016 Invictus yearbook staff has received a Pacemaker Award from the National Scholastic Press Association – making them the first Long Island yearbook to receive this prestigious award and one of only 31 high schools in the entire country to receive this honor. According to the association, the National
Pacemaker Awards are awards for excellence in American student journalism, given annually since 1927. The awards are generally considered to be the highest national honors in their field, and are unofficially known as the “Pulitzer Prizes” of student journalism. Yearbook Pacemakers are judged based upon the following criteria: writing/ editing, design, content,
concept, photography, art and graphics. Ward Melville’s 2015-2016 yearbook was created by adviser Cortney Weisman, who is a nationally certified journalism educator in addition to her art credentials. Working as a club, the students learn how to write journalistically as well as design and photograph.

Painted Ceiling Ward Melville High School senior and exceptionally talented student artist Isabella Brand was selected to create an original art piece for the U.S. Army recruiting
center in Selden. Isabella’s piece, which beautifully depicts the outside of Ward Melville High School, was created on a ceiling tile, which will be hung at the center.
Isabella, who was accepted to all 11 art colleges she applied to, will be attending the University of Michigan to study art this fall.

From Page to Center Stage Minnesauke Elementary School sixth-graders in Jayne Murphy’s class helped to bring five scenes from the famous book “The Lightning Thief” to life during a recent in-school tableau performance. During the event, the students worked in small
groups to embody several of the book’s key characters. Visitors watched each scene in isolation, as the students performed in small, enclosed sections of the classroom. The performances were interactive, as the students remained frozen until
a visiting viewer tapped them on the shoulder to bring them to life. The event was held in connection with the students study of the book and of ancient Greece, in particular gods and goddesses.
Art-Themed Breakout P.J. Gelinas Junior High School seventhgrade students in Lisa Capiello’s art classes recently used their detective, critical thinking and art appreciation skills to complete a funfilled “breakout” exercise designed specifically in line with their course curriculum.
Breakout exercises are immersive game platforms where participants work collaboratively to solve a series of critical thinking puzzles in order to open a locked box that is often secured by multiple locks. During the Gelinas event, students analyzed classic works of art – including pop art, Monet and
impressionism – to locate and decode different clues and open the five locks securing the box. The art exercise, which was set up in the library, was designed by Ms. Capiello with help from Assistant Principal Corinne Keane and library media specialist Nicole Connelly.

R.C. Murphy Junior High School seventh-graders Matthew Chen and Alana John were named the firstand second-place winners, respectively, in the 2017 Long Island Language Arts Council Kenneth F. Gambone Writing Contest. Both students will be honored at a celebratory
luncheon later this May, where they will receive their awards and have the chance to hear from featured presenter, veteran songwriter, poet and teacher Alan Semerdjian. Matthew’s winning piece is titled “When the War Came to Us” and told the story of a small town in
Poland that was invaded by the Germans. Alana’s piece was untitled and followed the theme of two sisters who reunited in Japan. Both students completed their award-winning submissions with the help of their English teacher, Bev Gilmore.
Literary Classic Students enrolled in Catherine Duffy’s English classes at R.C. Murphy Junior High School took a step back in time and experienced the Renaissance time period as part of their study of
William Shakespeare’s famous play – “Romeo and Juliet.” The students made Renaissance-style masks and created a choreographed dance to Renaissance music in order
to reenact the masked ball where Romeo and Juliet meet. Additionally, working in small groups, the students brought the written words to life as they acted out the play’s act two prologue.

Nassakeag Elementary School students worked to create a cleaner Earth this year as they celebrated Waste Free Lunch week. Throughout the celebration, students were encouraged to wear coordinated apparel based on a daily theme and use waste free materials when packing their lunches. To
help ensure the success of the initiative, students from Robyn Weinstein’s sixth-grade class who once again spearheaded the program, visited their peers’ classrooms to do a short skit on waste-free lunches, a short math lesson and read a book with an environmental theme. The grade level that

Waste Free Lunch generated the least amount of trash during the initiative was the sixth grade. As a special reward for the students’ efforts, building Principal Gail Casciano, Assistant Principal Nancy Pickford and Mike Milano, a member of the buildings and grounds team, served the grade level lunch in the cafeteria one afternoon.

Robotics Team Honored
Town’s law department to craft a code that would serve to protect Brookhaven’s golf courses, both publicly and privately owned, from future development, and in doing so, also provided golf course owners with additional accessory uses than what was previously permitted. “By creating this code, we have protected the vistas, open spaces and commercial recreational opportunities that coincide with golf courses, as well as the character of the
communities where they exist,” said Councilman Panico. “This move eliminates the potential of seeing another golf course plowed under for an as of right housing development that could substantially burden school district taxpayers, while giving a golf course owner more as of right uses to keep them viable well into the future.” The Town previously rezoned two of its own courses at Mill Pond and Rolling Oaks.

On May 8th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner and Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro attended the Sound Beach Civic Association meeting at the Sound Beach Fire Headquarters where they honored Eagle Scout Stephen Sarich from Troop 204 in Miller Place. Stephen’s Eagle Scout project was constructing benches and a planter at the Sound Beach Civic Association’s “Adopt-ASpot” location on New York Avenue.
“Congratulations to Stephen for completing his Adopt-A-Spot project and achieving the rank of Eagle Scout,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “Scouts like Stephen are the leaders of tomorrow, and from what I can see of this outstanding youngster, I say that we’ll be in good hands.” Highway Superintendent Losquadro said, “I commend Stephen for having the enthusiasm, dedication and discipline necessary to achieve the prestigious rank of Eagle
Scout. His project at the Adopt-A-Spot on New York Avenue will help to beautify and revitalize a piece of Brookhaven Town.” Since the award was presented in 1912, no more than four percent of all Scouts have attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Since its introduction in 1911, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by more than two million young men.

Ariana DeMattei, 16, of Center Moriches, was named one of America’s top 10 youth volunteers of 2017 today by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards during the program’s 22nd annual national award ceremony at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium. Selected from a field of more than 31,000 youth volunteers from across the country, Ariana has earned the title of National Honoree, along with a personal award of $5,000, an engraved gold medallion, a crystal trophy for her school, and a $5,000 grant from The Prudential Foundation for a nonprofit charitable organization of her choice. Also honored this week in Washington, D.C., was Victoria Bonavita, 13, of North Babylon, N.Y. Ariana and Victoria were named New York’s top youth volunteers in February, and were officially recognized last night at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History along with the top two youth volunteers in each other state and the District of Columbia. At that event, each of the 102 State Honorees for 2017 received $1,000 awards as well as personal congratulations from Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps. The honorees each also received engraved silver medallions and all-expense-paid trips with a parent to Washington, D.C., for this week’s recognition events. Ariana, a junior at Westhampton Beach High School, has raised over $100,000 to provide more than 1,000 new backpacks filled with school supplies for local elementary students through an organization she founded in 2012 called “Backpacks for Fellow Students.” “As a 12-yearold I never really understood how a family’s economic situation would affect their child’s ability to start off the school year prepared and ready to learn,” Ariana said. But one day while at the checkout stand buying her own school supplies, she was astonished to see how much the total bill was. The thought occurred to her that there
were students in her community whose families couldn’t afford to spend that much. She wanted to help. To buy her backpacks and school supplies, Ariana has organized numerous fundraising events, including a “polar bear plunge,” 5K races, movie nights, bake sales and an annual appeal. She publicized her events by writing press releases, arranging media interviews and using social media. In addition, Ariana spends time writing appeal letters, applying for grants, soliciting sponsors, recruiting volunteers, ordering supplies, and packing and distributing her backpacks to children
whose family incomes qualify them to receive free or reduced-price school lunches. “My hope is to create a level playing field in the classroom, no matter what the socioeconomic status is, and maximize a child’s opportunity for educational success,” Ariana said. Victoria, an eighth-grader at Robert Moses Middle School, has shared her love of animals with hundreds of thousands of people through oral presentations, homemade videos and articles in online and print publications. When Victoria was little, her grandfather Michael introduced her to pigeons and chickens. “Since

National Honorees then, I’ve always been interested in animals and in helping to teach others about them,” she said. She began by bringing her chickens and pigeons to school one day and making a presentation about them to the entire fifth grade. Since then, she has educated people about birds and other animals through talks at schools, libraries, nature and senior centers, and other venues in New York and other states. She also has created 22 educational videos for her own YouTube channel called “Victoria’s Amazing World,” many of which feature interviews with celebrities. In addition, Victoria writes articles for two online and print papers. “It requires a lot of work, but I’ve been able to reach and educate nearly a million people,” conveying important information about animal protection, adoption, and rehabilitation, she said. Victoria’s efforts were recently recognized when she was invited to speak at her state capital on Animal Advocacy Day. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is a national youth recognition program sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). “These honorees have done exemplary work to contribute to the health and vitality of their communities, and we look forward to seeing the great things they achieve in the future,” said John Strangfeld, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial, Inc. “Congratulations to each of these extraordinary young volunteers.” “It’s a privilege to celebrate these students not only for outstanding volunteer service, but for the example they’ve set for their peers,” said Jayne Ellspermann, president of NASSP. “These honorees prove that one person truly can make a difference.”
Jefferson’s Ferry residents were treated to an Earth Day visit from Girl Scout Troop 1853 in the Mount Sinai-Miller Place Unit. The Girl Scouts presented Earth Day projects that demonstrated
the “Health Benefits of House Plants for Earth Day.” The girls explained to the residents in attendance how plants help clean indoor air to remove air pollution and the other health benefits of plants.
They also donated the plants that they used for their research to Jefferson’s Ferry. The troop earned individual Breathe Journey awards for their efforts.
