project we broke ground on today is a major step in continuing our efforts to make Suffolk County a great place to live, work and raise a family.” Phase One of the Upper Port Revitalization Project upgrades the Village’s Texaco parking lot on the west side of Route 112, which is often utilized by LIRR commuters. Once completed, this phase of the project will create environmentally sustainable, well-lit access that connects The Hills apartment complex to the Port Jefferson LIRR station. The project will also improve sidewalk access to the LIRR station, one of the busiest commuter stop on the LIRR North Shore branch with over 30,000 rides per day, and encourage the use of mass transit, increase parking options and improve mobility. In 2016, Suffolk County awarded the Village with a $250,000 Jumpstart Grant to begin the Upper Port revitalization project, and additional funding for the phase is supported by the Village. Suffolk County Jumpstart funding allows for enhanced planning, development and construction of significant, vibrant mixed-use transitoriented development in and around downtowns. To date, the County has committed $11.3 million for improvements to downtowns and transitoriented developments across the County through the Jumpstart Suffolk program. Phase One of the project, which is fully funded, will cost $850,000 to complete. Phase Two and Three will continue to improve the Upper Port Jefferson area surrounding the LIRR. Phase Two will upgrade the East, North,
and South LIRR parking lots including a new layout, lighting and plaza entry. Phase Three will create Station Street, a new oneway street to provide entry to the new railroad parking lot. This phase will also include additional parking and entry to the new housing developments. The upgrades to the Port Jefferson LIRR station and the surrounding areas fulfill a key requirement to support transit oriented development. The entire project includes improved lighting and access to housing options, reconfigured parking, new signage, traffic calming modifications, new drainage, new sidewalks and additional trees. This downtown revitalization project supports County Executive Bellone’s Connect Long Island Plan, a regional transportation and development plan that promotes long-term economic growth in Suffolk County through a model of increased access and mobility by alternative modes of transportation. The plan supports investments in regional mass transit systems, such as the Long Island Rail Road, the implementation of new transit modes, transit-oriented developments and the connection of these transitoriented developments and downtown areas to destinations that residents frequently visit.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to highlight the construction progress of the Upper Port Jefferson revitalization project, commonly known as Uptown Funk. Suffolk County and the Village of Port Jefferson partnered together on Phase One of the downtown economic development project to help fund infrastructure improvements that will leverage additional private sector investment in new rental housing adjacent to the Port Jefferson LIRR station. “In order for Suffolk County to continue to attract the best and brightest, we need to make quality investments to improve our downtowns and transportation options,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “My administration is committed to providing funding to assist our towns and villages with these revitalization projects. During this spring sports season, two Rocky Point School District students helped to make history as they set new records in track and field competitions. After trying to triple jump for the first time, Rocky Point Middle School eighth-grader Alexandra Kelly broke the school record, which had been set in 2002. Alexandra broke the record by 7 inches recording a 34’ 8” jump and then set another new record a week later with a 35’ 9” jump. She also is a new record holder in the long jump with a 17’ 4” 1/2 jump. Additionally, Rocky Point High School senior Jake Pohl broke a 34-yearold varsity track and field score in the discus. The previous record was set in 1984 at a distance of 138 feet 6 inches. Jake crushed that throw with his own personal best and new school record of 141 feet 10 inches and is now ranked fifth in the county as a fiscus thrower.

As a culminating activity to their study on Vincent Van Gogh, Minnesauke Elementary School kindergarten students created a Starry Night STEAM project inspired in the style of the famous artist. The students learned facts about Van Gogh and
his painting techniques as well as how circuits work and the technology behind creating a “touch board.” The students used their talents to create a painting based on the Van Gogh painting while teacher Christine Sacco used conductive paint and a series of circuits to make
the piece interactive. When someone touched the stars or butterfly on the painting, recordings of the students sharing facts, quotes or information about the project are heard and/or a recording of Don Mclean’s “Vincent.”

Record Breaking Attendance The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) is pleased to announce that the 31st annual Adele C. Smithers Angel Ball, celebrating 62 years of “Recovery… One Step at a Time” was held on Monday, April 30, 2018 at the Garden City Hotel. The annual LICADD event raised over $350,000 to support LICADD’s substance abuse counseling and educational programs serving Long Islanders in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICADD was honored to host a record breaking number of guests and sponsors who
graciously believe in vital importance of the LICADD mission. More than 350 donors, community members, elected officials, treatment providers and their family members turned out to support LICADD and ensure that the agency’s life-saving addiction resources and recovery programs remain available to individuals and families across Long Island. Food Industry Lesson Ward Melville High School’s Gourmet Foods class learned how to prepare butternut squash soup with caraway seeds when chef Roland Iadanza visited the building. Mr. Iadanza is an executive chef with more than 30 years of experience in all facets of fine dining, catering and restaurant
operations. He is territory manager for RC Fine Foods in Suffolk County. From 2001 to 2013, Iadanza was executive chef/director of sales for Great Eastern Pasta Works and Pasta People in Lindenhurst and Babylon. He has a culinary arts degree from Johnson & Wales University. During his visit,
students were able to garnish their own soups in small bread bowls by drizzling sour cream over them and swirling the drizzle with toothpicks. Students enjoyed the soup and discussed chef Roland’s profession in the foodservice industry.

Volunteer Efforts Honored Ward Melville High School senior Madeline Mastriano has been named a Distinguished Finalist in the 2018 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards competition – a nationwide contest honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. Madeline was one of only eight New York State students selected for his distinction. Madeline has helped
to raise $37,000 for the Stony Brook Children’s Hospital during the past five years by running a lemonade stand with her brother. To date, the event has attracted more than 100 student volunteers and 25 business supporters to help with the cause. As a Distinguished Finalist, Madeline was presented with an engraved bronze medallion.
According to organizers, the Prudential Spirit of Community Award represents the United States’ largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service. The program, now in its 23rd year, is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Lunch with a Scientist P.J. Gelinas Junior High School eighth-grade earth science students attended a series of talks this year with renowned professionals as part of an initiative called “Lunch with a Scientist.” During the most recent event, students met with professor William Holt, a geophysicist from the Department of Geosciences at Stony Brook University, who reviewed his research in plate tectonics and the geoscience profession. Professor Holt’s research focuses on the movement on of Earth’s tectonic plates and the resulting stresses and strains produced across the North
American continent. His talk was focused around the origin and current state of the San Andreas Fault, in California. This North American famous feature was formed as the continent moved westward over an ancient sea-floor ridge. His research team measures the motion of the planet with a high degree of accuracy using GPS (global positioning satellites). During his discussion, professor Holt even made use of a toy slinky to help demonstrate the way that different seismic waves move through the planet. The discussion
also highlighted the positive job forecasts for the geoscience profession over the next decade due to both retirements and job growth. Overall, the experience broadened the students understanding of Regents level concepts through an examination of cutting-edge research performed at the local research university. The “Lunch with a Scientist” series of talks was started this year in an effort to bring local experts into schools to discuss their field of work in STEM based fields.

Honored for Contributions Port Jefferson Middle School student Emily Hearney was honored by the Port Jefferson Board of Education for her initiative and fortitude in spearheading a campaign to show solidarity among the students of Port Jefferson and Stoneman Douglas High School, where her cousin is a
junior. Emily, an eighth-grader, solicited the help of teacher Allison Giannusa, Student Government adviser, and mobilized her peers to create T-shirts for a 17-minute event where students engaged in civic action and paused to remember and honor those who lost their lives.
“Emily was driven to action because of the amazing person and leader that she is,” Principal Dr. Robert Neidig said. “Her exemplary efforts are a testament to her character and her willingness to contribute to her school and community.”

May’s Charity of the Month is:
drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual “Day at the Races,” which will be on June 8th at Belmont Racetrack. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, “Par Fore the Horse,” will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). Another Organization YOU Can Become Involved With . . . Girls on the Run ~ Long Island
www.GOTRLongIsland.org Girls on the Run is an empowerment program for girls in third through eighth grade that inspires them to be joyful, healthy and confident, while using a fun, interactive curriculum that creatively integrates running. Meeting twice a week in small teams for the 10-week season, volunteer coaches teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. Their Spring 5K will take place on June 2nd at Hofstra University. They are in need of volunteer coaches (no running experience is required) who have a desire to make an impact on the lives of young girls. All training is provided. They also need volunteers to help out at their upcoming 5K in the areas of: registration, hospitality, pre-run fun and course cheer. Anyone for Dessert? I have had my fair share of dining adventures through the years, most of which have since been reflected upon with a degree of amusement in hindsight. At the time, however, well let’s just say there are moments when our entire eating experience seemed to be part of a rather lengthy segment of Candid Camera. There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged
and remarked, “Oh yeah, that happens a lot - summer and all.” No offer of a replacement, no sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing. The customer is always right, indeed. Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check. Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused. Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate
aside from perhaps ordering a taco or two at a take-out restaurant. This year, my friend and I (different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession. Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return. And waited…. And waited… Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and flag him down went unnoticed. We were, we determined, completely invisible. Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned. Dessert? We looked at each other. We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours. Cheers, indeed.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school

Vandermeulen High School in the Port Jefferson School District has been named a top high school by U.S. News & World Report and earned the news organization’s highest ranking of Gold. Five students from the Port Jefferson School District were named Elementary and Middle School Suffolk Zone Award honorees by the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. They were honored at a ceremony at Bay Shore High School. Edna Louise Spear Elementary School fifth-
graders Joseph Aronica, Julia Fite and Olivia Masino and Port Jefferson Middle School eighth-graders Lucy DeWitt and Richard Melucci were chosen by their physical education teachers for demonstrating strong leadership and character traits in physical education as well as a commitment to academics. “These students exemplify the core
leadership values of our school and athletic community,” said Dr. Danielle Turner, the district’s director of health, physical education and athletics. “This honor recognizes their collective commitment to physical education and serving as role models for their peers.”
As the result of his professionalism, dedication and commitment, R.C. Murphy Junior High School Principal Vincent Vizzo has been selected to receive the Junior High School Principal of the Year Award by the Council of Administrators and Supervisors. “As the principal of Murphy Junior High School, Mr. Vizzo has built and cultivated a school culture full of care, warmth, kindness,
compassion, respect, and most importantly unity,” said Kevin Finnerty, Ward Melville High School assistant principal, former assistant principal at Murphy and one of the individuals who helped present the award to Mr. Vizzo. “He is a leader who is supportive of others, empowers others to achieve common goals and is willing to unlock people’s potential to help them become better. He has worked
relentlessly over the years to improve students’ needs academically, socially and emotionally.” Each year, the Council of Administrators and Supervisors recognizes a number of highly skilled school administrators from Nassau and Suffolk counties with an Administrator of the Year award. State Science Congress at the University of Buffalo in June. Geo Bee Winners Seventh- and eighthgrade students from R.C. Murphy and P.J. Gelinas junior high schools recently participated in the National Geography Bee as part of the buildings’ social
studies program. All students participated in an initial round of testing and winners from each social studies class moved on to a schoolwide competition. As a result
of their success at the building competitions, eighth-grader Michael Monez from Murphy and seventh-grader Aidan Visconti from Gelinas were named the champions.
Lessons on Health As an extension of their class studies, R.C. Murphy Junior High School seventh-grade home and careers classes attended an informative program on healthy eating and positive life choices.
The program, provided by Casey Clemens from the Ethical Choices Program, covered ways to prevent cardiovascular disease and obesity, as well as the link between unhealthy food choices and such things
as cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis. The school’s home and careers program is a 10-week course that all students take during their first year of junior high school.

Special Welcome Students in Steve Orlowski’s class at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School have been studying maps and continents and had a special visitor who was able to put geography in perspective for them. Stationed for the past two years in Japan as a member of the United States Navy, Chief David
Orlowski, their teacher’s brother, had business to attend to in Washington, D.C. and took some time to visit his family and the students in Port Jefferson. Chief Orlowski shared his experiences about living abroad, daily life on a ship and the job of a military person. Students asked
questions about what he eats in Japan, how he is able to speak with people there and what he does on a daily basis. They also learned that the military is not always at war, and that the majority of their time is spent patrolling foreign waters and maintaining equipment.

environment,” said art teacher Christine Sacco. “We researched and studied the Long Island Sound and the different habitats that make up the Sound and then each student created a composition using one of those habitats.” The students’ exquisite pieces focused on such things as a single animal, plants and landscapes containing many details of plants, animals, sunsets and dunes. Once the individual projects were
complete, Ms. Sacco worked with the students to combine all 97 unique compositions into one collaborative mural. Each sixth-grade student added something from their original art work to create a “Long Island Sound Mural.” Be Happy Pleasure is Nature’s test, her sign of approval.
