The Mathematical Association of America has recognized senior Annalisa Welinder and sophomore Grant Samara for their achievement in the American Math Competition 12 and AMC 10, respectively. The exam, which was administered nationwide, consisted of 25 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 60 minutes.
The main purpose of the exams is to spur interest in mathematics and develop talent through the excitement of solving challenging problems. The AMC 10 covers the high school curriculum up to 10th grade. The AMC 12, open to high school seniors, covers the entire high school curriculum including trigonometry, advanced algebra and
advanced geometry, but excluding calculus. “We are so proud of the accomplishments of Grant and Annalisa,” math teacher Dennis Christofor said. “These exams help further their analytical skills and are a great opportunity to continue to master their mathematical talents.”

Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help.
Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students recently visited the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. Chaperoned by French teacher Heather Marshak and English as a second language teacher Jennifer Walling, who are co-advisers to the
International Club, the students researched their ancestors who walked through the Great Hall when they entered the United States so many years ago. “It was amazing,” Walling said. “So many of the students found

Vandermeulen High School student Ava Schully recently performed in the National Association for Music Education All-Eastern music conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A senior, Ava is a cellist who was accepted first as an All-State musician, and then selected to perform following a

The celebration continues on June 1 with marathon readings of Leaves of Grass, several poetry presentations, and a Poet’s Picnic. The birthday weekend concludes on Sunday, June 2 in which students offer presentations of their poetry, art and theatrical works. In addition, Gary Schmidgall will speak at the Birthplace on June 28 in honor of Stonewall’s 50th anniversary. WWBA also hosts the Whitman Family Reunion in July, and the Walt Whitman International Conference, showcasing scholarly treatises from around the globe and featuring keynote speaker Ed Folsom
PhD., from August 9-11. Three exhibits will be displayed on rotation throughout the year: Prose & Poetry in Products and Advertisements from the personal collection of Ed Centeno, WWBA Poets-in-Residence – A Photography Exhibit by B.A. Van Sise, and WWBA’s Archive Exhibit. WWBA is refurbishing its Interpretive Center with retouched portraits of Whitman and a panel detailing Whitman’s years as a Long Island schoolteacher. WWBA thanks the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, Humanities NY, Huntington Arts Council, Town of Huntington, Suffolk County, and NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation for making this programming possible.
