New York Blood Center Announces A Blood Emergency

New York Blood Center (NYBC) announces a blood shortage in the region, one year after New York was the epicenter of the pandemic. Before COVID-19, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations like high schools, colleges, and offices. It has been one
year since these groups had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19 and few have been able to resume these life-saving events. NYBC currently has a 4 day supply of blood, which is well below what is needed by area hospitals. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500

donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Donors with type O and type B blood are especially needed as NYBC currently has a 1-2 day supply of these blood types. “With thousands of

Kaitlyn, who attends the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, where she is a student in the animal science program, was honored at a virtual award ceremony for her first-place win in the Medical Math contest, where she was challenged to demonstrate her knowledge of general

She completed a written test that included the use of ratio/proportion, dosage calculation, metric equivalents, Roman numerals, abbreviations, and general math including percentages, among other medical math-related problems. Tri-Spy Tours Honors The Memory Of Judge Selah Strong, Patriot With Gravestone Plaque British forces were still in control of Long Island, Selah Strong was elected President of the Trustees of the Town of Brookhaven, a position equal to today’s Brookhaven Town Supervisor. He continued to be elected president through 1797. He also served as first judge of Suffolk County. In 1790, President George Washington made a brief tour of Long Island. Selah Strong, as Town of Brookhaven leader led
President Washington’s entourage from Coram to the Roe Tavern in Setauket where he spent the third night of his tour. The unveiling welcomed touching words on the importance of preserving history from Strong Family members, Supervisor Romaine and Assemblyman Englebright. We couldn’t have asked for a better day or way to pay tribute.

Setauket Running Club Celebrates Season
Setauket Elementary School’s third through six grade running club members have been keeping fit and building strong running skills this year, as they have clocked hundreds of miles during
their club meetings this year. The program, which is run by math teacher Lisa Wall, is an after-school club that follows the New York Road Runners Mighty Milers program.

Before hunkering down to study for finals, Stony Brook students ventured out to enjoy the campus in the Spring. Hosted by the University’s Undergraduate Student Government (USG), Flowerland is a new tradition designed to help
students relax and breathe deeply before wrapping up the semester. Students decorated the plaza around the Student Activities Center with flowers and flower arrangements to mark the new season. The
arrangements will be present through the end of finals, reminding students that no matter how their year finished, there should always be time to stop and smell the flowers.

The Reboli Center is shifting gears in more ways than one with its newest exhibit focusing on motor vehicles. The exhibit “Shifting Gears” includes artworks of various modes of transportation, as well as two 1928 BMW motorcycles on loan from the Nettesheim Museum in Huntington. This theme continues in the History Room where an account of the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway is explored, courtesy of historian Howard Kroplick. During the clinic children will learn the ins and outs of a working horse rescue and will help groom, feed and care for the horses and other animals on the farm. They only accept very gently used items and everything is cleaned and prepared for sale by a team of dedicated volunteers (the boutique is operated by volunteers only)! The selfless efforts of their volunteers truly makes the store feel warm and inviting. After rent and utilities are paid, all the rest of the proceeds go directly to the organization, which helps those in need. In addition to that, the boutique makes many homeless individuals feel loved and cared for by giving them items of clothing free of charge and allowing them to use their bathroom when needed. Hope House Ministries is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. In 2013, the founder of Hope House Ministries approached long-time supporters of this organization, Barbara and Arti, with an idea of a retail space that could bring in needed funds for Little Portion Frirary, a home which houses 65 young men in recovery of drug and alcohol addiction that is ran by Hope House Ministries. The hope was that the proceeds that would potentially be brought in from a retail space could pay for these young men’s college classes, food, utilities and transportation costs. Some years later, the perfect location for a store was found and they decided to open up a beautiful boutique there. Since their organization is all about second chances, they called it Hope

The annual contest draw submissions from students across Long Island with a passion for mathematics, physics, research and engineering. To participate, students apply principles of physics and engineering as they work to construct a bridge from a 3/32 square cross-section of basswood with a mass no
greater than 30 grams. On the day of the competition, the judges test the bridge and apply weight until the structure fails. For her submission, Katherine constructed a bridge was 18.70 gram and held 38.60 pounds. The bridge received an efficiency score of 936.29.

Local Waters: An Important Vision Of Rocky Point High School Project Rocky Point High School marine science and science research students have been working on a grant-funded program with Citizens Campaign for the Environment and the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society.
Students are creating posters and video publicservice announcements related to Long Island Sound conservation. Organized by Mr. Aaron Factor, the district’s director of math, science and technology, five
students met recently with representatives from both organizations to put together a video about their collective projects. Sophomore Chloe Graham, juniors Aneesh Deshpande and Myla Mamolen and seniors
Amelia Matthews and Mark Pisano – who work with district science teachers Melissa Domenchello, Audra Hallock and Annika Rhinehart and approximately 50 other students – spoke about their work as part of the Long Island Sound study project. The students shared their well-defined research projects on the effects of water quality and the impacts on the Long Island Sound of such
environmental factors as the use of sunscreens and microplastics, the effects of storm water runoff and how paints and motor oils need to be disposed of properly. Rocky Point High School is one of only four schools on Long Island involved in the project. “When Mr. Factor learned of the program, he jumped at the opportunity to have students involved,” said Allison DePerte,
research associate and field biologist at Atlantic Marine Conservation Society. The video is in production, and the posters will be distributed in the coming months at local beaches and harbors for Long Island community members to become more aware the island’s fragile waterways, courtesy of Rocky Point High School students.

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the
late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee. Filing deadline is June 15, 2021. For more information and an application go to the NSHC
